XFCE4 is doing itself in?

So XFCE4 is doing a number of interesting things tonight. It all started when I clicked on the terminal icon in the lower defaultly-placed panel and the terminal didn't pop up. Very interesting. So I did a right-click on the desktop to bring up the XFCE menu and clicked panel there ... "Failed to execute default Terminal Emulator. input/output error." Whoa, what? So then I thought I would run Terminal from "Run Program ..." in the XFCE4 menu. It pops up with some classy Beryl ninja-like moves, but when I type anything into the box, it immediately disappears.
I thought this was very strange. The first thing I did was pacman -U xfce4, xgl, and beryl. Didn't do anything. pacman -Rs and pacman -U ... nothing either. So then I thought I'd try launching XGL and Beryl as root because it has different settings as it is a different user. It worked fine. I figured something "interesting" happened to my data, so I mv'd my ~/.config/xfce4 and xfce4-session folders to xfce4_ and sfce4-session_ respectively. I started XGL and Beryl under my normal user, tweaked it gently to the way I liked it again and it was fine.
... Until a few minutes ago when it happened again. I decided to post this issue here. The same thing has happened twice exactly the same way and I have no clue in the world what is affecting my GUI this way. My computer is a brand-new laptop and I am almost certain that it isn't the hard drive, I just got the XGL/Beryl setup going and I've noticed this problem since, so it may or may not be XGL or Beryl. I figure it is though. But even so, I don't know what to do to avoid this problem.
Quite irritating to have to hackjob your way into a shell, you know? Any ideas?

Bizzare! When I have a themed cursor set selected, I run into these problems, and when I select the default set (no theme), it operates normally!
Wow ... I have never seen anything like this before. I have no idea why it would be affecting this part of the system.
The other thing is that the cursor themes aren't presented when set, even after the window manager is restarted. I'm going to try a few things and get more knowledgable about this situation. As for now, I'll call it a bug ...

Per my understanding, if you want to leverage the automatic DeploymentId and Role data logging for WADWindowsEventLogsTable, you could try something like:

Fonts: what is xfce4 doing differently?

Here is a a screenshot for comparison of my FVWM and XFCE4 setup: link - don't assume it is full size when you first open it - make sure you check.
Now, I have highlighted the diffs that bother me. The left is FVWM, on the right is XFCE4. You can see:
1. the bookmark names on the left are smaller than those on the right (prefer FVWM)
2. The Arch website tabs and Wiki headings are, as far as I can tell identical
3. The text in the wiki on the left is very chunky, look at the e's for example. On the right it is much smoother and preferred. This only seems to affect a few fonts.
My conclusion is that the problem only affects the non-bold fonts and I guess the ugly fonts are un-anti-aliased.
This is on the same system, same settings in conf.d and local.conf
In the XFCE font config page Anti-Alias and Hinting Full are selected (default) - what's NOT enabled in my FVWM setup?

playing with openbox today & i noticed a different behaviour in comparison to xfce4 too

Xfce4-mixer blank.

I seem to be having some trouble with xfce4-mixer. When I open it, it shows as completely blank. No controls show up at all. Alsamixer shows options, and allows me to alter them. But I am unable to get xfce4-mixer to recognize controls at all.
I can confirm I am in the audio group also.

I'm knocking this old thread to report I had that very same problem... xfce4-mixer does not seem able to detect the soundcard and write an initial configuration file by itself.
The solution I found was very ugly, but it worked: I installed gnome-alsamixer, made all necessary settings and then closed it. Now xfce4-mixer can detect the soundcard fine- quite obviously using the gnome-alsamixer config.
PS: On one instance of it I can also get the mixer settings by logging X as root (NOT running "sudo xfce4-mixer" - for some reason it doesn't work), setting everything up and running "alsactl store" and the logging back as normal user. Obviously it's a permissions issue, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to find out what's happening.

[XFCE4] Is there a good 'Save Session' tool?

Is there an application that does what the 'Save Session' option on Xfce4 logout does, just better?
Here's the current state of 'Save Session':
-It saves how many application instances were open and their window sizes. For some applications it does not even save how many were open: Thunar!
-It does NOT save the actual desktop coordinates or desktop number of the applications.
-For thunar it doesn't save the folder locations in the thunar instances (they are all at ~ after system restart).
-(Optional, getting kinda specific here) For terminals it doesn't save which application was running in each terminal, so manually restarting them is required.

Edit: Oh lol, forget about ksplice (except if you're an admin and get paid to use it): From ksplice-create man page "you should confirm that the desired source code change does not make any semantic changes to kernel data structures". So you need to manually download the source code of each patch and review it or something. And if you're lucky you can actually use ksplice for it, but if unlucky ksplice won't work.

My AppleTV does show setting for 1080p

I bought my AppleTV back in June 2008. I have the 160GB model. I have software version 2.3 installed. When I go to TV Resolution setup, the 1080p option is not there. The highest is 1080i and 720pm. Is there a newer hardware version for AppleTV that is capable of outputting 1080p?

it only display the formats the tv support
but appletv only really do 720p it just do 1080i by interlacing
and it 1080p by upscaling which if your tv show fullscreen when you play
non 1080p material like dvd does itself
so unless one have a tv which does a rather poor job upscaling
1080p is a markting gemic only as it's not real 1080p
and with newer appletv's it's the same deal
it don't have enough power to do true 1080p

Fluxbox and xfce4-terminal do not integrate well together

WM only or Desktop Environment?

I am planning on installing Arch on my main desktop and debating over whether I should use just a window manager like openbox or a desktop environment like gnome.
Is there any reason for using a desktop environment like gnome over just a window manager?
I know that they come with panels/docks/menus to make the system easier to use, but those things can be added as needed. Is there anything that Gnome/LXDE etc can do that Openbox cannot?

That's the thing: what constitutes "ease of use" typically varies from person to person. As jasonwryan mentioned above, one person can find a DE incredibly easy to use, whereas another could just see it as needless bloat getting in the way of their workflow/hogging system resources.
It's kind of like comparing apples and oranges here; one isn't necessarily superior to the other (i.e. doesn't necessarily "add" or "subtract" anything), they're just different ways of working with your system.
If you really want something more "objective", though: a DE (as far as I understand it) is designed to create a more "desktop metaphor"-like workflow, whereas a plain WM is just that, a WM; it manages windows, and that's it. And films theta aren't available for download but you can purchase in a store like HMV? Apple isn't doing itself any favours by secluding countries by their store. They'd make billions if you could just select the iTunes Store you want to search & purchase from just by signing in! If anything what they're doing is putting themselves into a corner, other companies like Samsung & HTC are already on too of them for innovation & ease of use. The people they're attracting are predominantly existing Apple users not new customers. What do you guys think?

It's not Apple's choice, they can only sell a particular item where the content provider/rights-holder has granted them a license to sell them. Content is licensed by the rights-holders to Apple on a country-by-country basis, each country therefore has to have its own store, and you have to be in a country to use its store - they want control over where their content is available.
You can try requesting that an item be added to the UK store via this page, but unless the rights-holder agrees to then Apple won't be able to sell it here : http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunes.html

JAX-RPC: Web service where both server /and/ client are services?

I'm considering a two-way Web service in an application that I'm designing and would appreciate any insight from prior experience.
This will be a standard client-server application, where the server broadcasts messages and the client, in turn, can request further information about the messages that it receives (think RSS-style updates, but with more interaction). [strong]However[strong], instead of having the client poll the server for new messages, I'd like to have the client register itself with the server as a message listener. The server is currently implemented as a Web service on port X. I'd like the client to register itself with the server, and then receive messages on port Y.
I'm considering a design like the following (note the directions of the inheritance arrows):

* In both cases, the client and server are broken out into an interface and two classes. The non-Remote classes implement all of the functionality. The RemoteX interfaces declare the methods that will be exposed via RPC, and the RemoteXImpl classes are empty subclasses of the non-Remote classes.
* In order to register itself with the Server, the Listener must be passed in as a method parameter, and thus conform to the JAX-RPC specification for value types. However, value types can't implement java.rmi.Remote.
* Only the Server and Listener know anything about each other.
* This application can be run either remotely or locally, depending on how the Server and Listener are instantiated. For the latter, they're instantiated directly and the listener is registered with the Server. For the latter, the RemoteX interfaces will point to the service stubs.
* I don't see an easy way to allow both the Server and the Listener to have references to each other (at least now without some casting magic), since one of them will have to conform to the value type specification, which requires that all of its fields must be valid JAX-RPC types.
I've got the Server portions implemented and working, and am now going to turn to the Listener stuff. Can anybody see a fundamental problem with this design, or can suggest something better?

Because web services are fundamentally a Services-oriented architecture, and not an Object-oriented one, you are unable to pass objects by reference (only by value) hence the design decision to not allow rmi.Remote objects to be sent across the wire. The best way would be to abstract an object which does itself not represent a server, but a route to a server (lets call it ServerPointer). This must contain address, port, service info, etc.
Now, in your Server class, create a factory method which takes a ServerPointer, and returns a reference to a
remote server, e.g. protected Server createServer( ServerPointer p ) (using the necessary APIs to get such a reference)

What is the best way to separate functionality ?

I have this project where I need to develop a component for other flash developers to use. The scenario if you are the one who's going to use my "component" is like this:
1) you create a new project
2) you load the provided swf (or include the provided swc file) file and use the documented api (using interfaces if loaded as swf) to initiate it (for example just call the initiate function and that's it). What the component does itself is pretty much just adding a start up functionality to the website you are building, which includes: functions which make httpRequests and get data which the website will use, loading modules with fonts/graphic assets. It will also communicate the progress of these to the main application so the flex dev can display the progress to the user. At the end when the component has finished prepearing the assets you'll need for the website it notifies the main application.
3) And there is where the flex dev start his work using the api provided with the component to access the data he needs.
So what I want to do is package and keep my component source code compiled (to restrict access to the source code) and provide and easy way for the developers to use it. So I figured there 2 ways of doing that:
1) compile a module/application swf
2) complie a swc with a singleton
I started doing it with module swf when I started wondering if that's the best way to do it. I would be happy if someone could give me any thoughts on this one, pros and cons maybe why should I do that and not the other, hopefully an adobe employee will take a look too. Thanks in advance!

Actually, can I even compile swc files from flex using framework components like httpRequest and then load them as RSL ?

Seems like I can make my custom component include it in a library project, export it as swc and include that swc as RSL in my actual Flex project.
But I'm still not sure which approach is better, using RSL for this case or just a module? Does it make any difference ?
Also another question that rises in my mind is that if using RSL which class should I extend from, when this component will have no visual representation but should be able to do httpRequests and load modules/applications?

I have two hard drives one SSD, one HDD. How do I make programs on the two HDs appear in one applications folder?

I am use to windows when you install a program regardless of where is it install it will appear in the programs part of start. I was wondering if there is a way to do something similar on mac?

Two things -
You really should only install programs in the /Applications folder on your system HD. Installing them in other locations is an invitation to problems.
OS X isn't Windows and there is no "Start Menu". If you want to see all applications you can do that by opening the /Applications folder that is by default on your Dock. The second way is to open the OS X Launchpad. But your applications need to be in the /Applications folder to begin with. You can also use the Dock to see or access any or all of your applications. Just drag them from the /Applications folder directly to the Dock. The "icons" in the Dock are actually aliases to the actual applications. There are also third-party Dock replacements or enhancements that do more than what the OS X Dock does itself.

FF 29.0.1 bug - filled-out-forms

Hi, ever since I started using Firefox, I'd often have tabs already-open with already-filled-out-forms that would, every single day without fail, have my data retained (I'd fill out the form, hit the Back button, and the data would still be seen in the form. Every morning, I'd open the same tabs with the same data and the tabs would have my data prepopulated in the forms as I left it the day before). This was very important because I do some activity every morning and don't want to have to fill out my forms on a daily basis.
The 29.0.1 upgrade this weekend broke the preservation of this data. Now, I have to manually fill out the forms again. I do like the UI and UX upgrades, but why is it that this critical "feature" to me has been removed? The preservation of data was a paramount part of the Firefox experience for me.
If this is intended behavior, I'd like to hear it. If this is not intended behavior, I look forward to 29.0.2 fixing the issue. It was never a problem in versions 15+ up until 29.0, but 29.0.1 is a game changer for me.
(And by the way, I know there are ways around it, but having to manually click on autocomplete buttons or use form filler tools defeats the purpose of this already existing up until this version.)

tamarsaw, Yes. That or something similar is easy to do. I can understand you would rather just use Firefox than have to try troubleshooting it but the effort and results should pay off in the longer term.
It is just a matter of transferring and overwriting files in the new profile. It is also possibly worth keeping backup copies maybe put a spare copy somewhere safe such as the Desktop or Documents.

Remember you could for instance have the current profile retained for historic reasons. A totally clean profle for testing purposes, and a clean profile but with current open tabs and history/bookmarks.
The new sync is worth using that will keep backups on a server. However it has sometimes been unreliable and troublesome in the past it would be wise not to become over-reliant and rely on it totally for anything very important. When you start Firefox from the profile manager you choose the profile to use. Or you have icons/shortcuts that use specific profiles

The new Firefox Accounts from Firefox29 will backup opentabs and History to the server, AND allow you to use those backups even if you only have a single machine or even stop using one machine and register another single machine. IMac Ram is constantly being eaten up. Advice...

I have a late 2012 iMac with 8gb ram, 1tb HD. Recently installed Memory Clean and I find there is barely any ram memory available and is often in the 15-100MB range and am connately having to clean it to get back about 2 gb of ram. Seems odd that the Mac would use 6 GB constantly. Looked into Activity Monitor but don't know much about what I am looking at. Here is my report from EtreCheck:

You need to get rid of MemoryClean as that is one of the very bad programs to run...that takes a lot of memory itself and actually does nothing the Mac OS X does itself.
The Mac OS X versions from Lion to Mavericks grab most of the memory in the system, and then allocate the memory as needed. That makes programs like MemoryClean and CleanMyMac THINK there is not free memory when there actually is.
It is more productive to look at Activity Monitor, Memory and see what is shown at the bottom of the pane...the Memory Pressure is the most important part. As long as that is green you are fine. If yellow you are pushing things.

I am not able to duplicate photos in iphoto. I have tried the two finger click and then went to duplicate... no luck. Went through photo and duplicate... no luck. Used command D... nothing. How can I fix this?

Can you import new photo's?
If not that means something is wrong with your iPhoto files someplace or possibly your .plist file.
As you know, you can right click "show package contents" of the iPhoto Library and get a copy of your Originals out. I would do that immediately so you have a copy safe out of iPhoto's clutches, stick them on a external drive, along with all your other files just in case.
Then next download and run ALL of the free OnyX initial checks, cleaning and maintenance tasks (except the log files) and reboot at the end (in between tasks reboots can be canceled)

What this will do is sort of check things out, then clean out all your caches so they rebuild, repair permissions and other tasks that the computer normally does itself, the machine may act a bit slow until the caches and Spotlight are rebuilt, sort of a nuclear cocktail of fixing everything.
If OnyX gives any warnings then state them so here please, you could have a more serious problem that will need addressing like a Repair of your boot drive or failed SMART status etc.
If OnyX comes up clean, and your still having trouble with iPhoto, you can choose to remove (from Pictures), rename and/or archive the iPhoto Library, reboot and restart iPhoto to create a new iPhoto Library, then in iPhoto, import a copy of your Originals from backup.
You can also delete the com.apple.iphoto.plist file from your ~/Library/Preferences folder, reboot and restart iPhoto, reset your preferences again, sometimes that clears issues up.
If your STILL having issues with iPhoto, log into another user and try iPhoto there, if no issues then it's something unexplained in the other user. You may want to just switch users transfering files via the Users/Shared folder.
If your having problems with iPhoto in the other user, the program iPhoto ITSELF, is likely the cause. You can resintall it from the bundled 10.6 install disks, or simply install 10.6 again (does a overwrite of exisiting OS X and bundled iLife programs) and immediatly Software update until clear to 10.6.8. This method also kicks out kext and other OS X installed "hacks" from other third party program installers, you wlll need to run those installers again.
If you upgraded 10.6 over 10.5, then you will need to use Pafacist to extract iPhoto from the 10.5 disks, as the 10.6 white disks doesn't have the free iLife, only the grey disks do.
There are also some tricks to rebuild the iPhoto Library, I forget what they are, but if you ask in the iPhoto forum you will get a answer from several of our regulars who are familiar with the subject better than I am.
