Ah shoot.  I get that same "message" over and over again too, but it's not related to your problem.  I think that's just a GTK widget problem with the panel, trying to resize and fit some stuff I guess.  That constant "message" is, however, interfering with seeing what's crashing, since it's scrolling off that VC.  I don't know where else xfce4 pipes it's errors to.
I'll check through the source a bit and see if I can help you out.
You could try this for capturing the VC/1 output: "startxfce4 &> /tmp/xfce4.log"
Start up xfce that way, open up a terminal in xfce and use "tail -f /tmp/xfce4.log" (hit ctrl-c to cancel the "tail" process at any time).  Try to repeat those steps which give you an error with the settings menu, and watch what reads out in your terminal.  If for some reason it crashes, open up that file later and look at the last few lines in the file before it crashed.  You'll probably have to scroll down a bit since it will probably pipe all your xinit stuff in there too.

  • [SOLVED] xfce4-mixer unexpectedly stoped working

    Hi archers,
i am having this problem a couple of days now and i couldnt find something usefull in wiki
xfce4-mixer panel pluginn stopped working with the following message
Plugin "Mixer" unexpectedly left the panel, do you want to restart it?
User is member of audio group in case it matters...
I have no clue if this is a matter of groups, permissions or package
I am using now xfce4-mixer 4.8.0-3 after downgrading from xfce4-mixer 4.8.0-4 but the problem remains the same
    thanks a lot

Try to right-click on the mixer and choose Properties.  Then select your Sound Card and the Mixer Track and choose close.  Hopefully the mixer applet will now work.
That is what I have to do on some kernel updates usually.  With the drivers being built into the kernel sometimes the settings get wonky when you update that.  Reselecting the items in the Mixer Properties generally fixes the issue.

  • [split] xfce4-mixer window is blank

Heh...I never knew about that either!  Although...mine just loads up a blank window.  When I try to switch under File -> Options -> Device from default to NVidia nForce2, the setting doesn't stick and I get no options for adjustment.  Any suggestions?

Well, after taking the suggestion from the old thread, the mixer will load properly when I use the panel launcher.  I did have to right click on it and select the correct device, but then it would launch correctly.
Unfortunately, trying it from the command-line still doesn't work, and I don't want to have it on my panel all the time. As it was mentioned by the other person with the same problem, if I load up the blank version by issuing <code>xfce4-mixer</code> from the CLI, go to options and try to change the device, there's no effect.
There isn't a <code>man</code> page for <code>xfce4-mixer</code>, so I'm not sure if there's some CLI switch I can pass to it for it to work.  Any suggestions?

  • Xfce4 mixer question

does anyone know how to change the mixer on the panel to use the master volume instead of master1? (or alternatively, i guess, change applications to be volume controlled by master1 instead of master? )
before the latest upgrade i could control overall volume and things like web browser plugin volume, etc. with the indicator on the panel, now i have to actually open the mixer (which kind of defeats the purpose of having the level meter on the panel ). i checked the various ~/.xfce4 config files, but i didn't see anything that assigned that in any of them. i changed the libmixer.so value in xfce4rc to id="0" and id="1" (default seems to be id="-1") but that didn't work. (i'd like to change the icon too, if anyone knows how.)
otherwise xfce4 4.2.0 rocks! icons on the context menu are awesome, and a lot of the interface is much better. kudos to the xfce4 team!

slackhack wrote:does anyone know how to change the mixer on the panel to use the master volume instead of master1? (or alternatively, i guess, change applications to be volume controlled by master1 instead of master? )
mixer on the panel = volume control ?
    What is master1 ? I only have Master;0
You can choose "wannabe master" in the properties of volume control item.
You can also mark "useful controls" in sound section of xfce settings manager.
I guess I don't really understand what's your problem with mixer settings (I'm assuming you have xfce4-mixer 4.2.0-1). You can't see
all mixer controls in xfce sound settings and/or mixer (volume control) properties ?
slackhack wrote:i checked the various ~/.xfce4 config files, but i didn't see anything that assigned that in any of them.
    BTW it's now ~/.config/xfce4

You can also try new xfce4-terminal:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=9306
The only problem I'm having with 4.2 is that it now starts on all screens and displays (I have :0.0 (crt) and :0.1 (tv)) and I don't know how to start it only on crt (I don't need it on the tv). The previous version didn't do it. I already modified all settings and I'm using my own .xinitrc (startx). When I remove session manager it still starts xfdesktop on the tv. Anyone knows a solution????

  • Xfce4-mixer crash on mouse scroll volume change attempt

    Hi,
I have the latest (4.8.0-1) xfce4-mixer plugin installed and it crashes 100% of the time when I try to change the volume by moving the mouse over it and start scrolling. Everything else works as expected.
Any ideas how to make it work?
    Thanks.

    Hey,
I seem to have the same problem. In /var/log/everything.log I see:
    "xfce4-mixer-plu[2354]: segfault at 24 ip 0000000000406553 sp 00007fff8c864640 error 4 in xfce4-mixer-plugin[400000+a000]"
It could be a bug that is only present when debug output is disabled. See: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/24323
The bug was filed in May 2011, so it could be a different problem. I didn't have time to test it yet cause I'm having exams at the moment, but compiling it with " --enable-debug=minimum" might help.
    Good luck

  • Xfce4-mixer blank.

    Howdy,
I seem to be having some trouble with xfce4-mixer.  When I open it, it shows as completely blank.  No controls show up at all.  Alsamixer shows options, and allows me to alter them.  But I am unable to get xfce4-mixer to recognize controls at all.
I can confirm I am in the audio group also.
    Alsamixer

    xfce4-mixer intel selected

When I run xfce4-mixer from command line, from either root or my user, I get the following:

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm knocking this old thread to report I had that very same problem... xfce4-mixer does not seem able to detect the soundcard and write an initial configuration file by itself.
The solution I found was very ugly, but it worked: I installed gnome-alsamixer, made all necessary settings and then closed it. Now xfce4-mixer can detect the soundcard fine- quite obviously using the gnome-alsamixer config.
PS: On one instance of it I can also get the mixer settings by logging X as root (NOT running "sudo xfce4-mixer" - for some reason it doesn't work), setting everything up and running "alsactl store" and the logging back as normal user. Obviously it's a permissions issue, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to find out what's happening.

  • Xfce4-mixer failed to start

    Hello,
I have installed  Arch Linux and XFCE for two weeks now and I'm very excited with this flexible distro. The only issue that i have is the functionality of the xfce4-mixer. I click on the applications-multimedia-audio mixer and while the process be displayed on the task manager, the GUI window won't open. After a reboot the problem may be solved but after another reboot the problem returns.
When I run as a root the command: xfce4-mixer, the output which displayed is:
xfce4-mixer: Failed to initialize xfconf: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
I have nvidia sound card and (on board) hda intel but following the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xfce#Xfce4_mixer
I changed the default sound card from settings-editor --> xfce4-mixer replacing the value of sound-card to the PlaybackBuiltinAudioAnalogStereoPulseAudioMixer
to fucntion correctly with PulseAudio. I executed several reboots and the xfce4-mixer opened correclty. Unfortunately today, the problem returns again.
When I'm trying to kill the process of the xfce4-mixer, I can't.
I tried set the default sound card following the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ad … sound_card but nothing changed.
The sound and the alsamixer works fine.
How can I fix it ?
    Thank you in advance !

Make sure that xfconfd is running.
As a note, xfce4-mixer is no longer being actively developed. From the release notes:
Due to gstreamer1.0 having dropped the mixer-interface entirely, and xfce4-mixer and xfce4-volumed relying on this interface with gstreamer0.10, our mixer application and volume daemon cannot be ported to 1.0 and are consequently not maintained anymore.
A new pulseaudio mixer plugin has been added to the Xfce git tree - you might want to give that a try. From the readme file:
Xfce4-pulseaudio-plugin is a panel plugin for controlling an audio
output volume of the PulseAudio mixer. The volume can be adjusted using
keyboard shortcuts, mouse wheel, a slider in a popup menu (todo), or via
a linked external audio mixer tool.
It works in a manner very similar to xfce4-mixer but more integrated with pulseaudio.

  • PCI Express X-FI Xtreme Audio - Mic and mixer problems

6PCI Express X-FI Xtreme Audio - Mic and mixer problems' Trouble started two days ago when I updated to the latest X-FI drivers. Now I have no mixer and I can't figure out how to get my mic to work. The only thing that has changed is the updating of drivers. I am using senheiser headphones with mic for use on ventrillo. In the old set up I could go into the mixer and tell the software that the Line-In was a mic and it would work perfectly. Now I can't get the mic to work at all since there is no creative mixer. The windows mixer doesn't allow you to do anything worth wild.
I don't have the old software so I can't go back to the old setup. I am using Vista 64. What the heck am I doing wrong? Why won't the software now recognize that I am plugging in a mic!?!?!?
    BAH!!!!
    PLEASE HELP!

Doesn't Vista have some sort of automatic checkpointing feature that gives you a way to back up to a point before you updated the drivers?

  • Quod libet keyboard shortcuts/xfce4-mixer

Can someone suggest some keyboard shortcuts, like to increase/decrease volume, forward/rewind, etc.
Also, when I start arch, in xfce4-mixer, headphone and pcm levels are zero by default and I need to increase them on every boot. Is there a way to change their default values.

  • Mapping media keys to xfce4-mixer

I tried to search and find someway to link my media keys on XPS M1330 to my xfce4-mixer. My keyboard is setup as evdev, running xev shows my keys are already set to XF86Audio(something). I even tried to map xmodmap and it didn't help. Anyone know if it is possible to map keys to control xfce4-mixer?

Maybe, I don't know. I have solved it using another software that comes with ALSA. (The result is the same, it will show up in xfce4-mixer too)
Menu -> Settings -> Keybord --> Application Shortcut Tab
    Button Add
      Command: amixer -c 0 sset Master 5+
Command shortcut: *Press your Vol+ key*

  • PulseAudio and xfce4-mixer

Is any other mixer who works like xfce4-mixer and have pulseaudio support?
I need mixer in tray which works with Pulseaudio.
    Cheers

I did not mean to bump old posts, but wanted to give a solution for other who may search.
In AUR repository there is a nice program called obmixer, which I now am happily using with FVWM... It is good, as it can work with alsa and pulseaudio... I love it as it stays in a tray...
Alternatives may be gvolwheel or gvtray, but both only works with alsa...

  • Xfce4-mixer doesn't unmute alsa after setting volume to 0% and back up

    Hey guys,
I'm no newbie to Arch, so maybe I just need some cold water in my face because I'm overlooking something obvious.. Yesterday I did a complete re-install from an arch bootstrap script and got everything running just the way I want again - except for one thing.
I am running Xfce as my DE with the xfce4-mixer applet in the tray to control the Master channel's volume using the mouse scroll wheel. This always used to work fine for me. Alsa is up and running and I get sound. The only thing is that when I completely turn down the volume by scrolling down over the speaker icon in the tray (because my phone rings for instance) and then scroll it back up again, alsa somehow seems stuck in mute mode. I have to open a terminal window and use alsamixer each time to unmute the volume again .
This seems like strange behavior on the part of xfce-mixer to me, and it is not something I have encountered before. Anyone have some tips or tricks to fix this weirdness?
    Thanks,
    welpert

lucke wrote:Maybe you can mute and unmute with middle click? It works in some mixers.
Alas, no luck.. But scrolling up from 'muted' should have the same effect as middle-clicking, at least I assume both actions activate the same unmute function somewhere in the code..
EDIT: For now I'm going to use volwheel. But.. please don't hesitate if you know the answer bacause I like xfce4-mixer's simplicity.

  • [SOLVED] xfce4 automounting problem on usb dev with utf8 encoded files

I have problem of auto mounting usb external drive contains utf8 encoded files under xfce4.
Using hal and dbus for usb device detection.
Heard that I need to add iocharset=utf8 under fstab or hal fdi configure files and tried them all but didn't work
usb devices with vfat always got mounted with default charset.
I found out that exo-mount is the one doing the actual mounting and that it is the one that cannot take all extra mounting options such as iocharset etc.
Have tried gnome to mount this hard drive and works find with nautilus option that let me set various mount options for each harddrive.
Is there any way to replace exo-mount with some other alternative mounting tools that work with thunar?
Any workaround will be helpful as long as I can mount my usb drives with prefer charset so that I don't have to guess all ???marked files.
Heard that xubuntu replaced that exo-mount with gnome-mount to handle drives with extra mount options such as iocharset.
but I am pretty new to configuring things and couldn't find the step by step instruction for this so please provide the complete solution.
Link to the pages that explain workaround would be nice as well.
    Thanks in advance!

Found the patch for exo-mount so that it takes additional mount options HAL suggests.
    https://bugzilla.altlinux.org/attachmen … ction=diff
Now my usb drive can be mounted with the proper charset.
Hope this patch helps others with similar situation as well!

  • Audition 1.5 Mixer Problem...

    Hello everyone,
Once again I will explain my setup.  2 track mixer, L/R outs turned into an 1/8 inch plug which i plug into my microphone slot on my laptop.
    Here is the problem.
My cousin uses the same setup (his computer is right next to mine).  Whenver I run the mixer through my audition I have to turn down the main and channel levels to almost 1 or else it's too loud. Doing this muffles the sound coming from the mic (MXL condenser).  On his laptop though, he doesn't have to turn everything down because his volumes are fine.
What exactly would my problem be?

Laptop mic inputs are rarely documented well and rarely of sufficient audio quality for serious recording use. They may well be noisy and don't necessarily have a flat frequency response. They are intended for applications like Skype.
On some machines they are mono, on others stereo. On some better quality machines they can be switched to be line level inputs. so maybe this is what your cousin's machine is doing.
'If you are at the stage where you are using a mixer. you really need something better than the laptop mic input. Try to find a good usb interface from a known manufacturer - I'd suggest Edirol, Tascam, Echo Audio or E-Mu
