XFCE4 Power button does nothing

I am running XFCE4, and in the xfce4 power manager I have it set to ask me what to do when I press the physical power button on my laptop, but when I press it nothing happens at all. Is there something else I have to do to get this to work? I have acpid installed and running, LXDM as the login manager, and dbus is started at boot via fedora-readahead.
Works fine when I use the logout button on my panel or in the xfce menu, I can shutdown/reboot from there. But the power button on my laptop is giving no response.

I have the exact same problem. I want my power button to ask me whenever I press it. I found out that executing
/usr/bin/xfce4-session-logout
Will show the usual logout promt where I can select my next action.
I tried adding the same command to /etc/acpi/handler.sh but it didn't execute properly, giving me a warning about not knowing the session. My guess is that I have to put something in from on the logout command so that it knows what user/session it should execute as. I also tried the things at the xfce wiki but they seemed to have failed aswell. Maybe you'll be luckier or figure something out as I'm still a beginner with bash scripts.

  • IBook won't start up - power button does nothing, PMU reset not helpful

Hi all - I was using my iBook earlier this morning and it just turned itself off without any warning. It was running off the battery, but had plenty of charge, and there was no 'low power' warning, so it wasn't that.
I can't get it to turn on now. Pressing the power button does nothing - no whirring, beeping, chiming or anything else. I tried resetting the PMU to no effect. No lights appear on the caps lock button. I haven't tried using the Mac OSX cd, but I'm a little afraid I won't get it back out of the slot-load drive with the way the computer is behaving.
I have it plugged in now and it seems to be charging the battery, so I don't think it's related to either power or battery issues. In fact, it seems the power and battery are the only things working! Absolutely nothing else happens. Unresponsive.
My warranty ran out in September (November now, unfortunately) so if it needs servicing I suppose it will be out of my own pocket.
    Can anyone help?

Ok - good news. I've got the problem fixed.
After a call to Apple Support (called the Canadian one), and a $59 charge (worth it, in my opinion, since my warranty is expired) the gentleman on the line asked me to do a PMU reset with the SHIFT + CTRL + Option + Power combination. That's what I had tried before and it didn't work. Didn't work this time either.
Next, he had me remove the battery, unplug the computer from the adapter, and hold the power button down for 5 seconds. I put the battery back in, plugged it back in, and turned it on.
Voila. Works like a charm. Apparently, there are two ways to do a PMU reset.
Thanks everyone for looking at my thread, and thanks arnie for the responses.

  • Kernel panic, "must restart" screen, but holding down power button does nothing! Need to wait until battery runs out???

Help! While doing workaday tasks on my 15" MacBook Pro with 10.6, I got the dreaded slowly unfolding darkened screen with the message "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button until it turns off." Kernel panic, I guess.
In the past, in the few times this has ever happened to me, I held down the Power button as instructed, and the Mac turned off.
HOWEVER, this time around, holding down the Power button does absolutely nothing! It doesn't make the computer turn off, no matter how long I hold it down, nor if I try holding it down in combination with other keys.
Needless to say, the OS is completely frozen otherwise, and no keyboard or trackpad actions have any effect.
And since this is the new kind of MacBook Pro -- there's no way to remove the battery!
So, is the only solution, to unplug it from the power supply and simply wait for 8 hours (or whatever) until the battery runs out of juice? Say it ain't so!
(I'm writing this on someone else's computer, needless to say.)
I NEED access to my computer's files TODAY for important work-related matters. Am I out of luck, or is there some secret way to get this darn thing turned off and restarted?

  • Lenovo V570 Laptop Power Button does not work. Did I screw it up?

Hi, my Lenovo V570 keyboard recently stopped working so I took the keyboard off to reposition the cable. In the process I disconnected another cable on the motherboard (shown in the pictures below). I also cant find the black plastic piece that was holding it down.
Now not only does the keyboard not work but the power button does nothing. After research though Ifound out this laptop is notorius for having the power button go bad.
When I plug in the AC adapter I do see the battery light go on and it charges so I dont think the motherboard is bad. I
have tried every trick in the book as far as getting static out of the laptop power button (holding down power button for
certain times). I looked at the mainteneance manual for this laptop and could not figure out what the disconnected cable does. I have tried reconnecting the cable without the plastic piece but that did not work.
Is the disconnected cable responsible for this or should I order a new power button board with cable?

My iPhone 4 will not power on.  When connected to iTunes via my computer, it is recognized and shows fully charged battery.  Pressing and holding the sleep/wake button does nothing; just a black screen.  Any suggestions?

Only way is to bring it to the Apple Store and use the warranty if it hasn't expired

  • The power button does not work

I know that i have to fix but the problems is that the warranty is been over for long i need to know a good place to repair because the apple people said they could not fix it. Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • CP1025nw, repeptetive smudges, poor print quality, pushing toner button does nothing.

I haven't used this printer in a couple of years, so I sense some of my issues might be related to that.  First up, the print quality is quite poor. Despite having a new black toner cartridge, the B&W printing isn't very strong; it's blotchy in some areas with random spots in others. Second, there are repeating color splotches all over the place. I've attached a photo. Third, pressing any of the toner buttons does nothing, no beeps, blinks, or movement. So far, the only things I've tried was toreplace the black toner cartridge and blow out the interior of the machine with compress air. I also removed the drum and gave that a quick and careful cleaning.. Any thoughts?

  • HT201150 How do I configure what the Power Button does?

How do I configure my power button so hitting it does not automatically put it to sleep?
Because it is right by the delete key I am hitting it accidentally all the time.  Also my cat is constantly putting my computer to sleep when I am working.  Is there a config file or a hack I can use to force a dialog (Restart/Sleep/Shutdown/Cancel)?

Power button behaviourRe: after installing maverick power button does not provide options to sleep, shut-down
The first one is resolved but I can't see how. 10.9's pmset command didn't have the 'power button' setting when I looked recently, it looks like this feature was deleted to me.

  • Download button does nothing

I have the Adobe Creative Suite app installed (for CS6) and wish to upgrade to CC. When I go to the app center and try to download one of the software apps, pressing the Download button does nothing.
I read here that someone said to delete Adobe Air and reinstall, which I did, but the Download button STILL does nothing.
In particular, I'm first trying to download Illustrator CC.
    Any ideas?

  • Power button does not react iMac Core Dua 20"

    Hello,
I just purchased an iMac 20" intel Core Duo. I leave the machine to go to sleep during the night. Almost everyday when I want to start the next day my iMac does not wake-up pressing "enter", moreover the power button does not even respond. I have to unplug the power cable and after a few seconds the powerbutton can activate the Mac again. Can anybody help or should I immediately return for repairs?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
One question. Is your iMac a Core Duo (no longer made) or a Core 2 Duo?
