Xfce4-powerr-manage segfault

hi all.
xfce4-powerr-manager segfaults whenever I insert or remove the power cable on my laptop.
seems like this has been noticed about a month ago :
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/29294
I am wondering how long it is going to be before this fix is merged into Extra.
anyone know?
thanks,
ad.

According to that bug report the bug was fixed in 1.0.11-2. However, the latest version available in the Arch repositories is 1.2.0-2. The bug must have been reintroduced in the newer versions because I'm receiving the same problem. It appears the problem happens randomly, and by that I mean there is a chance it wont seg fault when removing the AC.
I ran xfce4-power-manager with the --debug argument, as such I received the following output:

Segmentation fault
This is when I have the AC connected, and subsequently remove it.
EDIT: It _seems_ the error is impossible to reproduce when the battery is fully charged. So perhaps this has something to do with it? Earlier on it was constantly seg faulting and that was when my battery was ~20% charged.
Some extra information:
$ uname -a
Linux arch 3.3.7-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon May 21 22:39:59 UTC 2012 i686 GNU/Linux
According to bug reports from the previous version the bug was due to locales. I'm using the en_GB locale which isn't particularly exotic.
EDIT2: Submitted bug report since I believe this is a valid bug: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/30055

  • Xfce4-power-manager and laptop-mode-tools + backlight problems.

    Cross posted from here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=127992
    I don't know which forum it belongs to, so maybe a mod can close the one in the wrong forum.
    Out of curiosity, do these two tools conflict with each other? There seems to be some features that do the same thing, ie harddrive spin down time, but I'm not sure if these two will try to kill each other trying to configure the same power settings. If they do conflict, how could I go about disabling the conflicting parts (on either)? laptop-mode-tools claims it needs acpid "for ACPI support", however, acpid seems to be grabbing the standby event and throwing the laptop in standby despite the standby button bound to do nothing in xfce-power-manager. If I take out acpid, does that mean laptop-mode will no longer detect acpi events such as connecting/disconnecting AC power and thus not change modes when its plugged in?
    Another problem I've had after installing xfce4-power-manager is that when I use the brightness hotkeys the backlight gets stuck and starts flashing, locking up the system until I force shutdown. However, I can use the brightness plugin without trouble at all. What's causing the power manager to screw up setting the brightness since it clearly seems to work otherwise.

    It is easier to close this one and move the other thread over here. Just continue there.
    BTW better use the Report button when you want to have a thread of yours moved to another forum. That way it is guaranteed a mod will see this in time. And you never need to cross post.

  • [SOLVED] Double Icon, xfce4-power-manager - Ideas?

    Hey all,
    Recently I've had this little launcher-like icon beside my power manager icon in xfce4.  I can't seem to get rid of it...and when you right-click on it, it's the exact same thing as the xfce4-power-manager icon.  If I try to click the "quit" option, it closes itself and the xfce4-power-manager.  It's like a double-icon for xfce4-power-manager that I can't seem to get rid of.
    So far I've tried deleting all of my xfce configs (rm -rf /home/<user>/.config/{xfce4,xfce4-session}) and it still shows up.  I've looked at the .xml files and they look fine.  So...I settled on just hiding the icon(s)...it only shows up as one icon to hide in the notification area preferences.
    Any suggestions/ideas on how to get rid of it?  Screenshot provided:

    The only other thing I can think of is you either have 2 instances of xfce4-power-manager running, or gnome-power-manager is trying to launch.
    Have you previously or are you currently starting gnome services at start up (Settings >> Session and Startup - Advanced tab)? If so, check the Application Autostart tab to see if you have both gnome-power-manager and xfce4-power-manager selected.
    Otherwise check to see if more than 1 instance of xfce4-power-manager is running:
    $ ps aux | grep xfce4-power-manager
    there should be too lines similar to the following:
    padfoot 2586 0.1 1.2 177036 12500 ? Ssl 16:51 0:03 xfce4-power-manager --restart --sm-client-id 263cc3d4b-0aaa-48ba-9bfe-14697576ae9f
    padfoot 2615 0.0 0.2 16680 2848 ? Ss 16:51 0:00 xfce4-power-manager
    Any more than that and you have more than 1 instance.
    Let me know
    Cheers.

  • Xfce4-power-manager does not start, but after relogin - works

    Hi all.
    When I login after system start, xfce4-power-manager does not start and systemtray icon doesn't appear. But after relogin (not restart), the systemtray icon of xfce4-power-manager appears and power manager itself works correctly (if I don't relogin, notebook will shutdown after 10 minutes of downtime - that rule doesn't exist in xfce4-power-manager settings).

    Yes, i'm actually running xfce4 (all other things from xfce4 group are installed).
    It starts from a login manager named LightDM.
    AcpiD installed as a dependency.

  • Error in xfce4-settings-manager When Click on Window Manager

    Hello all,
    I have a problem with the xfce4 environment.
    First, I can't see any panel by default.
    Second, the settings button near the shutdown button does not work.
    Finally and more importantly, when I call from the terminal settings from terminal, settings start fine, but when I click on Window Manager or Window Manager Tweaks I get:
    [jav@localhost ~]$ xfce4-settings-manager
    These settings cannot work with your current window manager (GNOME Shell)
    I already tried deleting sessions as mentioned in Arch wiki and also called startxfce4 again.
    Any ideas?

    startxfce4 should be used to start xfce4-session. It can be run from the virtual terminal(the screen-filling terminal you see when you boot up a (fresh) machine) directly or can be called in your .xinitrc. Instead of
    exec xfce4-session
    you should have
    exec startxfce4
    in your .xinitrc.
    It looks like you're running startxfce4 from an X session(probably Gnome). Xfce is a replacement for Gnome, it's not run inside of Gnome or any other window manager or desktop environment(well, some parts can, like the panel). What's in your .xinitrc, especially at the exec line? Note that there should be only one exec line.

  • How do I install a patch? (xfce4-power-manager tray icon patch)

    Sorry if this is a stupid question or if the answer can be found elsewhere, but I googled and searched the forums and couldn't find any answers.
    xfce4-power-manager had for the longest time had a tray icon showing battery status, and they recently decided to remove it in favor of a xfce-panel only icon. Bringing it back was requested on bugzilla and a patch was released.
    But I really have no idea what to do with it. Can someone shine some light on this for me?

  • [Solved]Xfce4 Power Manager Settings

    Hi!
    I've got a little question, but i couldn't find the answer on google. What is the command line to get to the Xfce4-power-manager settings? Thanks in advance
    Edit: Found it xfce4-power-manager-settings
    Last edited by Roline (2010-01-21 13:06:14)

    Xfce is developed at a slow pace, they rarely make releases. Version of xfce4-power-manager from [extra] is 2 years old and doesn't have proper support for systemd and new version of upower. Update to version from [testing], it's a git snapshot, but it's been very stable for me. Here is bug report: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/39893

  • Xfce4-power-manager & change icon in Xfce4 panel

    Hello!
    I'm trying to change the appearance for the latest xfce4-power-manager (v1.4.1-2). I use elementary Xfce icons. The former xfce4-power-manager was using the correct (simple black & white) elementary icon in the notification area in the Xfce4 panel. With the latest version, where xfce4-power-manager has to be added manually to the panel, it is using some kind of colourful icon.
    Is there some way to tell the program to use the elementary icons instead? I've already tried to edit /usr/share/applications/xfce4-power-manager-settings.desktop. But no dice.
    Thanks in advance.

    Do you know the location of both, the simple black & white icon and the colourful one?
    If you do, you can try the following. Backup the original colourful one and paste a copy of the one you want to use in the same location and with the same name.
    Afterwards check if the result is the one you want.
    I have myself come across the situation of wanting to change an icon through the .desktop file but in the end it seems that some icons, even in this case maybe?, are hardcoded and can't be changed through a .desktop file.
    More than willing for someone to proof me wrong though!

  • Xfce4-power-manager screen brightness osd

    I'm having trouble with xfce4-power-manager and the screen brightness osd on my thinkpad t530. There seem to be only 2 different brightness levels. If I change the brightness manually in /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness it seems to work fine, but when i do fn-f8 or fn-f9 its either on full brightness or 11. Does anyone else have this working? It used to work fine.

  • Xfce4-panel dissapears (segfault)

    I'm using xfce4-svn. The latest xfce4-panel-svn, 4.5.0.3svn-r26171, segfaults, leaving me without panels. GDB shows this:
    Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
    0xb7ec679d in xfce_arrow_button_set_arrow_type ()
       from /usr/lib/libxfce4panel.so.1
    Sorry if it was already reported, I searched bugs at xfce bugzilla and arch flyspray and found nothing. Just wanted to confirm if it happens to someone else. Already tried deleting ~/.config and starting xfce using another user, without luck.
    Plus, before my panel started sefgaulting, I had the same problem of my xfce menu dissapearing.
    I'm the only one?

    I had the same problem and after googling for awhile I found a workaround that seems to work to only have one panel on your xfce4 desktop.  It seems that you have to go ahead and delete either panel in the desktop manager.  It doesn't matter which as both panels (top and bottom) will disappear.  Then edit your ~/.config/xfce4/panel/panels.xml file to remove one panel's info from <panel> to <panel>.  This is what you're left with:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE config SYSTEM "config.dtd">
    <panels>
    <panel>
    <properties>
    <property name="size" value="27"/>

    <property name="fullwidth" value="1"/>
    <property name="xoffset" value="0"/>
    <property name="yoffset" value="996"/>
    <property name="handlestyle" value="0"/>
    <property name="autohide" value="0"/>
    <property name="transparency" value="25"/>
    <property name="activetrans" value="0"/>
    </properties>
    <items>
    <item name="xfce4-menu" id="5"/>
    <item name="separator" id="6"/>
    <item name="launcher" id="10"/>
    <item name="launcher" id="11934103341"/>
    <item name="launcher" id="11934284041"/>
    <item name="actions" id="12"/>
    <item name="separator" id="11934162861"/>
    <item name="tasklist" id="11934220980"/>
    <item name="datetime" id="11934096510"/>
    </items>
    </panel>
    </panels>
    Save the file and logout of xfce4. NOTE: Make sure you don't have the "save session" box checked off when you log out or all is for not.  When you log back in, voila, only one panel.

  • IPrint Manager segfault

    Hi,
    after running for some month without problems, today the iprint manager
    does not work anymore. It starts, but stoppes immediately because of an
    segfault.
    ipsmd.log shows:
    WARNING The iPrint Manager has just experienced a segfault or fatal
    error. It will be restarted by its monitor process.
    The process is loaded and unloaded several times and then the monitor
    process does not start ipsmd anymore.
    The only TID I could find, is 7000747. It lists the message shown above,
    but in my case the manager does not start again at all (in case of the
    TID the manager does still start, but some printers are corrupt; not
    much better).
    I have requested the debug rpm, as stated at the TID, but no answer by
    Novell so far.
    Does anyone have experienced this problem before and knows a solution?
    Platform is OES2, Linux based, iprint clustered (but problem exists on
    both machines).
    Thanks in advance,
    Frank

    I have experienced this problem when Print manager database was kind of broken. I re-created printmanager. Hope this helps.

  • [xfce4] network-manager-applet not asking for Wifi password

    I am running XFCE with  the gnome network-manager-applet and kwallet as password storage and I do not want to use the gnome keyring because it is making many problems with my current setup.
    There are multiple ways to store passwords in NetworkManager. To save them plain in the config files is not an option for me. So I can put them in a password store or hack them in every time I want to connect.
    While the gnome network-manager-applet does not work with kwallet I accepted to do all the hackery every time.
    Problem: I even can not hack in the passwords.
    If I try to connect the connection is disconnected immediately. The logs say, that "The name org.freedesktop.secrets was not provided by any .service files".
    Long story short:
    - NetworkManager needs the dbus service "org.freedesktop.secrets" to read passwords (via password store or via prompt)
    - kwallet does not announce "org.freedesktop.secrets" - this is done by the nm-plasma applet (which I can not run without hacking XFCE)
    - gnome-keyring announces itself as a secret agent but does not work with my setup
    Do I need to write my own secret agent which only shows a password prompt and parses the input to NM or is there any option/tool/patch/hack/miracle that I have missed to use kwallet with gnome network-manager-applet or to get a password prompt without installing gnome-keyring?
    Thanks in advance

    add this to your start-up: gnome-keyring-daemon --components=gpg
    Edit: and install gnome-keyring ofc

  • [Solved] xfce4-power-manager broken in Xfce 4.10?

    EDIT: I found out that the “Lid closed”-event is apparently now also recognised as a “Sleep button”-event by the kernel. Both events triggered a suspend command when I closed the lid, which led to some weird shit.
    Last edited by IceHand (2012-06-18 14:23:17)

    I don't think it has anything to do with ConsoleKit, since I was and still am able to shut down, automount etc., but I'll humor you: My .xinitrc looks like this:
    exec ck-launch-session startxfce4
    I don't use a login manager.

  • Problem with xfce4-session.

    Hello, I'm not sure whether I'm posting in the correct section of the forums but anyway, here's the problem, after upgrading the system xfce started crashing randomly (It definitely crashes when I try to suspend first time, then it does it correctly). I took a look in Xorg and fglrx log files, they didn't contain any errors. However, dmesg listed a segfault of xfce4-session in libglib, is there any solution for that problem or I just have to wait until the upgrade. Also, I have and AMD E-450 APU, and a proprietary catalyst driver from catalyst-stable. Here is the output from dmesg (the segfault message is in the end):

    Yes, it keeps happening even with the default kernel when I try to shut down/suspend the computer (Alt-F4 key combination). I've read on some russian forum that it's the problem in recently upgraded glib2 (as they think), however downgrade didn't help. I'll try to check whether xfce4-session is to blame.
    EDIT: It's definitely not xfce4-session, I tried previous version. Also, while running downgrade I saw that there is a newer version of glib2 in ARM, which is much more unstable, so I'm using 2.36.1-1.

  • [SOLVED] Lid doesn't suspend anymore with xfce power manager

    The options "When laptop lid is closed" are set to suspend (and used to work), but still, when I close my lid, nothing happens. Using the logout dialog or the suspend button my keyboard works. Is it a problem with xfce-power-manager, or ACPI not registering the lid event anymore? Any idea how to fix that?
    [edit]
    I solved that problem by removing ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-power-manager.xml, killing the power manager and reloging in my session to flush the settings. Then I reconfigured the lid closed action to suspend (and everything else to my liking).

    Sorry to bother you again, but for some reason it doesn't work anymore...
    Somehow it can't lock the GNOME session, because when I enter the above line from /etc/acpi/handler.sh manually as root in TTY1, I get this error:
    ** Message: Failed to get session bus: Befehlszeile »dbus-launch --autolaunch=c9375f4ea0008d92177b28db000009ae --binary-syntax --close-stderr« brach mit von Null verschiedenem Beenden-Status 1 ab: No protocol specified\nAutolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.\n
    If I enter this command inside GNOME, everything works just fine, it locks the screen and suspends.
    EDIT:
    Setting the XAUTHORITY environment variable properly did the trick. Therefore, I borrowed some lines from here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Su … losing_lid
    Thread marked as SOLVED again.
