Xfer a PIXMA iP4500 from MacPro to a NAS (SimpleShare)--How do I?

I've absolutely been crushing my head against a wall here. Finally gave up and called Apple. The first gal couldn't comprehend the concept of NAS attached via ethernet to a router [it would be amusing if it wasn't so sad--in her world, there are two ways to hook up a printer: 1)wirelessly {bluetooth?} and 2)USB cord]. The second guy couldn't help, but at least he wasn't blown away by the idea of an ethernet network. He suggested I try these forums.
I moved this printer from a direct USB hookup on the back of my MacPro to the USB input on a networked external hard drive. The NAS sees it, and lists it in the printer pool (instead of the HP it replaced). I have tried to set it up in Leopard>System Pref>Print & Fax via IP, and get the timed out error others describe in this forum (Attempting to connect to host 192.168.2.xx=>Network host '192.168.2.xx' is busy; will retry in n seconds...). I tried More Printers, nothing listed, everything gray, only option is to cancel. I even tried Windows, nothing there either, not even the HP Laserjet 4L I have hooked up to another (XP) laptop. I've seen the suggestion to make sure we're all in the same Workgroup, but have no idea where to find and edit that setting.
I'm open for all ideas--another post said to try enabling all incoming connections in the firewall--I tried that too...
Incidentally, this is how I got so good at Windows networking...it's fascinating intellectually, but frustrating because I've got other things to do with my time, and I shouldn't have to be an expert to use an Apple (BTW, the fact I knew more about NAS than the tech support was alarming to me!!!)
Thanks in advance, and don't be miffed by the tone (it's in case any Apple management types are trolling to check for customer feedback).

My attempts from last night did not work. I suspect I have driver issues. Even though I downloaded both drivers available here http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=SupportDeta ilTabAct&fcategoryid=257&modelid=15596, I don't know what driver Leopard is trying to use. Canon IJ Network is one of the options I can get with the doubleheaded arrow under Sys Prefs>Print & Fax>More Printers, but nothing shows up. I don't know what Canon driver I currently have (nor where to find that info).
Trying to get info from SimpleTech (the maker of the SimpleShare 160GB NAS I have) yields this tidbit for Tiger or Panther or Jaguar on pp 20-21 about adding a networked printer on Mac OSX: http://www.simpletech.com/support/guides/user-guides/61600-00074-001.pdf, but it was sufficiently different than Leopard that I couldn't use it. I tried modifying what's there, but see my comments on Sys Prefs>Print & Fax>More Printers.
I found out about Gutenprint on another thread and went here http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3. Now I'm wondering if I should just install Gutenprint 5.0.2 (what's the difference between that and 5.1.7? Why would they be developing both simultaneously?) and see if the open source drivers there can take care of the problem (I understand that strips out OS X's gutenprint drivers and replaces them with more up to date ones).
BTW PAHU, I don't see App>Utilities>Directory... I have Applications>Utilities>Directory Utility, but going in there shows nothing (even though I have separately mounted the SimpleShare drive on my MP).
I don't know if I mentioned it, but on my XP laptop I installed Bonjour, so maybe that's another reason the workgroup showed up in Sys Prefs>Print & Fax>Windows. In any case, it says it worked but in reality nothing printed (it was showing as a completed job).
In summary, I don't know how to find out what driver I have. I don't know what driver I need. And I don't know how to add the printer via the NAS' printer server, even though I know its IP address and that it can use Samba.
I appreciate anything anyone can throw my way.

  • I want to use my canon pixma ip4500 as my printer with my good ole G4.  I need a driver.  Is there an easy  way to get that or is my G4 too old?

I want to use my canon pixma ip4500 as my printer with my powerbook G4.  I need a driver but was very confused with how to get one.  Is it possible and could someone come down to my level and tell me step by step how to do it?  Many thanks.

Nope, your PB is not too old.
Here is the link to the PIXMA ip4500 drivers on Canon's site:
    Drivers & Software
The page has you first select your version of the Mac OS (10.4) from the pull-down "Chose Operating System" menu. Once selected, you'll see the available software, Click on the arrown next to "Drivers" and it should look like this:
(click image to enlarge if needed)
Click the word "Download " and you'll get the driver.
Note at the top of that image there are other links to other documents pertaining to this printer. If you click on "Brochures and Manuals," while you are on that web page, you'll have Canon's instructions, probably better done than by anyone here other than someone who has the same printer model on a Mac running OS 10.4.

  • Problems printing wirelessly with Canon PIXMA iP4500

I have a MacBook Pro 15 in 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo with 4 Gb RAM and I’m running Mac OSX 10.5.7.
    1. My Canon PIXMA iP4500 inkjet printer used to work perfectly as a printer attached to the USB port of my Airport Extreme Model A1034 modem, when my computer communicates with the modem either wirelessly or via an ethernet connection between the computer and Airport, but lately it isn’t working.
    2. When I try to print the printer icon shows up in the dock and when I click on it a Canon iP4500 series printer dialog box pops up and says the Printer is Ready but the status of the document is “Stopped”.
    3. If I click on “Resume” and error message appears: “Operation could not be completed. client-error-not-possible”. This happen repeatedly.
    4. I recycled the modem, turned the printer off and on (and did those things in reverse) and ran Airport Utility, all to no avail. I also deleted the printers in my Print & Fax System Preferences dialog box, downloaded the latest CUPS driver from Canon (ver 10.1.0.0), and recreated the printer (called Canon iP4500 Series).
    5. Network diagnostics says it can connect to the internet over either my airport or Ethernet connection but it cannot connect to the Canon iP4500 series.riousbprint.tcp.local.
    6. Also when I run the Canon IJ Printer Utility from the Canon iP4500 series printer dialog box a Printer List dialog box shows up with no USB-attached printers listed
    7. I can print if I connect the printer directly to my MacBook Pro, so I don’t think it’s a driver or USB cable problem. Curiously, when I connect the printer directly to the computer the Print & Fax dialog box automatically creates a second printer called Canon iP4500 series-1. If I use the original Canon iP4500 Series printer in this setup it says “No pages found”.
Basically I’m stumped at this point and would appreciate some help. Unfortunately, I’m on a 3-mo sabbatical and do not have my original Canon printer software with me so I cannot reinstall the printer app unless someone knows how I can obtain it. Similarly I cannot reinstall Leopard either, though it doesn’t seem likely I should need to. Happy to try anything else though.

Hello Basil and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Reading your post, it would suggest there is a problem with the USB of the Airport Extreme, but I don't believe this to be case as there is not much that could go wrong with them. Instead I think there is something not right with the transport (TCP) protocols that get the data from your Mac to the Airport USB.
At this stage, I suggest you look at installing version 5.23 of the Gutenprint driver. This version supports your iP4500 and will help to narrow the cause of the current symptom.
Before installing the Gutenprint driver, I suggest we trash all the current Canon drivers you have installed - we can add them again later if need be.
Open Finder and navigate to Mac HD/Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter. Trash all the contents of this folder and empty the trash.
Next, navigate to the Mac HD/Library/Receipts folder. You will see the Canon iP4500 xxx.pkg and another one for the CUPS driver you installed. Trash both of these and empty also.
Now open System Preferences > Print & Fax and delete all the Canon printers in the list (highlight and hit ' - '). It would also be handy to reset the printing system, so while in Print & Fax, move your mouse over the now empty printers list, hold down your Control key and click (or right-click if you can). Click on Reset printing system when it appears.
Now install the Gutenprint drivers. When this is done, restart your Mac and try adding the iP4500 again. This time, after you select the Airport shared printer, you will have to open Print Using and search for the 'Canon iP4500 - Gutenprint v5.2.3'. Select this and now try printing. Let me now the result.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 not printing on network with canon pixma iP4500

    Hi
I am not able to print satisfactorily from my 15" MacBook Pro 2011 to my QNAP TS439 server that has my Pixma iP4500 installed.  I contacted apple support and after 45 minutes the operative gave up and said it was a QNAP problem.  I am fairly sure it is not, so please read on...
Here is what happens.  I ( myself and Apple) select the correct printer from the menu on my MacBook Pro with the correct path and printer on the server using Snow Leopard 10.6.8.  As soon as I go to print something  it says it is waiting for 10 seconds, very quickly it gets extended out past 30 seconds, but never prints.
I have tried another driver called the Canon Pixma iP4500 Gutenprint v 5.2.3.  This  will only print in black text.  If I try to print colours, I get a very wishy washy pastel effect that just about shows that there might be some colours there.  This is hopeless and most unsatisfactory.
In my opinion, this points the finger at Canon's printer driver that has been supplied to Apple, because the printer driver for Windows 7 works perfectly from the Windows 7 x64 PC.
Does anyone have a solution to this?

Just a quick reply for others in case it helps....
First you have to install the Canon drivers for Yosemite from Canon Printer Drivers v3.1 for OS X.
Then since I had reset my Canon MP620 network settings, I had to start from scratch. I connected the printer to my new computer (with Yosemite) via USB and then launched the Canon IJ Network Tool.app (downloaded from the Canon web site) and it found the printer. However it hung on the last step "Searching for printers via access point...". At that point (after waiting a minute for it to give up), I had to read the IP from the Canon printer and enter it by hand in the Network Tool dialog.
I then unplugged the USB cable, and went to the Printers and Scanners system preference panel. After a few minutes, the printer showed up and I was able to set it up.
I then tried to set up the printer on a 2nd computer, running Mavericks. The Canon printer would not show up in the Printers and Scanners system preference panel, but after I launched Canon IJ Network Tool.app on that computer, the printer did show up and I could set it up there as well. This is all much more convenient than using a USB cable and sharing the printer, but, dang, is it complicated!

  • Airport Express and Canon Pixma IP4500 wireless printing

    Hello,
I bought an Airport Express and set it up as an additional wireless network at an 5Ghz N mode. It's conneted to a Linksys Wireless router modem/router. Internet connectivity is fine from both iMac 24 and MacBook. Both use OSX 10.5.4.x
Airport is set up via USB with a Canon Pixma IP4500 inkjet. When connected directly to the iMac, it prints fine. When I connect the IP4500 to the Airport Express, I get an Error 300 - basically saying the printer is not responding.
The whole point of the Airport Express was a faster network for both wireless printing and playing iTunes wirelessly from the MacBook.
Any tips on what could be a common problem for this printer?
    Thanks

    I had a similar problem
I had to "add a new printer", so one printer refers to the directly connected printer and the other refers to the printer connected to the airport (bonjour).
    Greetings.

  • No titles or old titles from MACPRO to IMAC same OS

    very perplexing situation:
i spent hours writing in the titles of 140 images  inside photoshop CS4 in the title area
in the ITPC area of photoshop
    for a slide show.
    this was done in CS4
i then ran Graphic converter to make them smaller jpgs  1 MB each.
the data is there all are titled correctly.
i had to write over old titles and put new ones in.
i did this all on the MAC PRO  10.5.6
the show will run during my photo gallery show on an IMAC 24 "  with 10.5.6 which was donated for the event
ill have it   run on iphoto  because titles are better seen in the show. so if people wish to purchase they can read titiles
I transfered the files from MACPRO to IMAC
    imported into iphoto ( 7.01)
most of the titles are either not there or are the old ones i erased and wrote over on the MACPRO
    phew!
now it looks like i have to rewrite the titles again inside iphoto on the imac
    does this make sense?
    glenn

I never use iPhoto, but I bet that it is not reading the new IPTC info you typed in. Check to see how iPhoto reads the exif data.
Do you have iPhoto on your MacPro that you can test it first? The transfer of files from one computer to the other likely had nothing to do with it.

  • Replacing HP 7350 with Canon Pixma IP4500 anything to be worried about

I've been unable to get my HP photosmart 7350 printer to work in either Leopard or Tiger (two separate machines) I've decided to just go out and by a new printer. Is anyone having any problems with the Canon Pixma IP4500? I would like to know before I purchase one so I don't have to go through the problems that I have with the 7350. Thanks
    Paul

I can't speak for the Canon Pixma IP 4500, but I have two Canon Pixma IP5200 which are older but similar to the 4500. Both of my Canons work fine with Tiger, Leopard and Windows XP (via BootCamp). I also replaced two HP printers that I could not get to work correctly with Tiger.

    Hall Palm Desert,
if your Mac monitor has Thunderbolt ports, and the PC monitor is on the end of the daisy chain, then you might be able to do it by connecting your PC monitor’s VGA cable to a Mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter (e.g. Apple, NewerTech), connecting that cable’s Mini DisplayPort end to one of the Mac monitor’s Thunderbolt ports, and then connecting a Thunderbolt cable between the other port on the Mac monitor and your MacBook Pro.

I think the McAfee suite will do the trick when I pay them a one-time fee of $69 or $179 for a year for unlimited support.
Your call of course but IMO a waste of money. Please read this first:
There are many forms of ‘Malware’ that can affect a computer system, of which ‘a virus’ is but one type, ‘trojans’ another. Using the strict definition of a computer virus, no viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions. The same is not true of other forms of malware, such as Trojans. Whilst it is a fairly safe bet that your Mac has NOT been infected by a virus, it may have another security-related problem, but more likely a technical problem unrelated to any malware threat.
You may find this User Tip on Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal, as well as general Internet Security and Privacy, useful:

The User Tip (which you are welcome to print out and retain for future reference) seeks to offer guidance on the main security threats and how to avoid them.

  • I purchased a book from itunes and cannot figure out how to get it on my ipod nano 7.  I cannot find an answer that works.

I purchased an audio book from itunes and cannot figure out how to get it on my nano 7.  I have tried everything.

Have you double checked to make sure these Audiobooks are configured to sync to your iPod from under the iPod's Books configuration tab in iTunes?  This is assuming that the audiobooks are already stored in your iTunes library and appear under the Books category.
To access this configuration tab, plug in your iPod and select it from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes to bring yourself to the iPod's Summary tab. Now locate the Books tab across the top in the main iTunes window and select it. Here you can configure what and how audiobooks are synced to the device.
If you make any changes to this tab, make sure to hit the Apply button on in the lower right hand corner. This will sync the updated changes to your device.
