XFi-Fatal1ty /w top end machine stutteri

I purchased and built a new computer. It's a:
Quad core QX6700 (4 x 2.667GHz) processor<
EVGA nForce 680i motherboard<
EVGA Geforce 8800GTX /w 768MB RAM per card x 2 in SLI mode<
2GB PC6400 RAM (800MHz)<
XFi Fatalty Audio card<
50GB Raptor HD (fast)<
30" Dell 3000WFP running at 2560 x 600<
Windows XP Pro SP2<
Latest drivers for everything including motherboard.<
Now, the games I'm currently playing are:
Medieval 2: Total War<
Dark Messiah of Might & Magic<
Neverwinter Nights 2<
The problems I'm experiencing are only with the sound. Dark Messiah is absolutely the worst offender with persistant stuttering audio that happens so frequently that I can only play it for a few minutes before having to quit and restart. I actually suspect the game implementation because of how buggy it is. Looks like it has potential once resolved.
With all the games, however, I have frequent clicking sounds whenever videos are being played (Bink mainly). Also an oddity is that I also get clicking sounds in-game while scrolling around or essentially anything that causes a lot of changes in the video such as intense combat. This computer is so fast, that even at the highest possible video settings, I am pretty much stuck at 60FPS, except for NWN2 which hovers around 30FPS with max settings. Medieval 2 has it's moments in combat where I'm getting over 200FPS with FRAPS engaged!
My theory is that the extreme amount of video data being passed around might be causing issues with audio not getting enough bandwidth to do it's own thing, so I tested it by dropping the resolution and it didnt' make a difference in a series of tests. What I did notice is that the music is getting interference, higher pitched or more busy music is subject to the clicking sounds while scrolling in Medieval 2. When the music is quiet and faded between songs, there are no distortions at all.
I started the tech support process and they emailed me an article from their knowledge base:

All these symptoms (and any other degradation of sound quality for that matter) can mostly be traced back to system / BIOS settings that prevent your audio sub-system from functioning properly. In other words, if your system is optimised ("tweaked") for a specific task, the result might be that the extra bit of 3D power or data transfer speed to the dri'ves uses up so much of the systems resources, that there is simply not enough left for your sound card to do its job as it should. Sometimes even the factory settings of certain PCs / Motherboards can cause symptoms as described above.
The following guide is separated into the following main sections. If changing one specific setting does not resolve the difficulty, it is recommended that you change it back to the previous setting, or the default setting, before proceeding with a different configuration.

Remove all unnecessary hardware. Every device installed in your system uses some of the available resources, even if you do not acti'vely use it.<
Tidy up all cables inside your computer as electrical interference may be caused otherwise.<
Ensure that audio drivers are up to date.<
Download and install the latest chipset drivers and BIOS update. The major chipset manufactures are: VIA/ETEQ, AMD/Nvidia, Intel, SIS. Ali? To address the issues:
With SLI, I only have PCI slot, which is between the two video cards with the SLI connector going over top of it. There is no possible way to get closer to the video cards...<
Everything else checks out.<
Other notes:
Going to the Creative Entertainment Center : Entertainment Center?Settings pops up a window which allows me to tweak remote control settings. I tried disabling the remote control and the program crashed!<
Using the Mode Switcher to switching modes from Game Mode to Entertainment mode didn't solve the problem. Neither did Audio Creation Mode.<
I've printed out the article and going to work on changing some of the settings.<

Figured my dxdiag info would help...still trying to fix the problem. I chopped some stuff out. [size="" face="Courier New">------------------

Scratchy noise coming from top end of keyboard. Not effecting performance but very noisy and worrying! What is it? Is my computer seriously damaged? Is it easily fixed? Thanks for any help

It would be helpful if you were to identify the model of MBP you have.
The noise makers on a MBP are the fan(s), the HDD and the optical drive.  Can you locate the exact position where the noise is coming from?
    Ciao.

  • About the top end of Metadata panel

I want to know that the different Icons on the "Dashboard" or whatever we call the top end of Metadata panel. The smallish white rectangle with a good bit of info inside and next to it a grey rectangle with more details. (See inlined image below)
I scanned a while in the help file but haven't come up with a discription of all the various icons and what they mean... I suspect it might vary by camera too so more complications.
The one thats bugging me now is incuded below; what does the the human figure mean?  And further where can I get a detailed discription of what all the different icons that might appear in that white rectangle might mean?

It's called the metadata placard.  There's a good description in the Bridge help pdf.  The position where the human figure is located contains an icon for white balance.  That white balance icon represents 'custom.'  Look in help url below and search on 'metadata placard.'

  • What would I gain in terms of defying (deferring) obsolescence by purchasing a top end 15" w/the dedicated graphics card as opposed to the top end 13"? thanks!

I have a circa late 2007 all-black 13" MB with 2.2 GHz Intel core 2 duo, and It still works well
thinking of the 13-inch, 2.6GHz dual vs the 15-inch: 2.3GHz quad core.. and I was hoping to repeat the 2007's longevity

thanks! also general pros and cons could help

Do not spend today's money for features you will only use tomorrow. Buy the computer you need today, and when your needs change, buy the computer you need then.
A computer has no art value. It is a commodity tool that should help you do the work you want to do right now.

  • No backlit keyboards for high end machines?

    Hi all,
Looking to buy a high end laptop, I narrowed my options to the Envy, the dv7t and the dv8t .None of these machines seem to offer a backlit keyboard, which for me is an important feature. They just have "hp color matching keyboard" listed in the specs and config pages. Does any1 know whether or not  it's possible to install such a keyboard, or somehow get it on one of these machines?
    Thanx
Message Edited by dfl on 11-02-2009 12:08 AM

I have also strongly considered purchasing the dv8t.  I noticed as I was pricing one a few months ago there was an option for a backlit keyboard at $50 extra.  Now after its been replaced with the dv8t quad series the option was gone.  I consider this a strong selling point and do not like having to search for a light in order to type in low light conditions.  Will HP eventually allow this as on option, or a special order part?  It would have been sold already if the option was available.  Any info is greatly appreciated.

  • Are new beta drivers for XP and Xfi fatal1ty any go

Can you share your feelings about the new xfi beta drivers with a fatalty card? I've experienced they are better in terms of stability, but find that games are almost now missing sounds. Weird I know, but it's almost like I am not getting full 32 voice capability. The current drivers Creative offers are ok, but I find that any problems I have had with my system lately always come down to a Xfi driver component.
Anyhow, appreciate your experiences with them...

Well for me I managed to stop it from reverting back to 2. in the Creative Volume Panel by unchecking Syncronize with Control Panel option.
Seems that the problem with what you were mentioning is related to Sounds and Audio Devices, when I did have Creatives Volume Panel Syncronised with Control Panel, when I was playing certian games, it would end up reverting to 2. (which I found annoying) but since I did the above I have had no more issues since

  • All programs with sound end up stuttering...

I have a Satellite C655-S5128 and can't run anything audio related without getting the stuttering effect. I can only describe it as though someone was tapping the mute button on and off almost rapidfire, resulting in a brief muted pause in whatever audio is running at least once every second or so. This makes it impossible to understand what's being said in movies and makes listening to music a headache at best. As far as I've been able to tell, there are no other issues with my sound.
I probably should point out right off the bat that my tech knowledge/skills are more than a little limited, very in fact. Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated. I don't know what I should be posting in terms of my laptop's info. I'd be grateful just to be pointed in the right direction. Thanks.

That is all very peculiar. System Restore should have undone any driver changes as well.
As an aside, in general I'd recommend against using Windows Update for any driver updates.
    Try using a clean boot.
How can I perform a clean startup of Windows 7 without my startup items to troubleshoot a problem?
This is just for troubleshooting. The clean boot will start Windows without loading additional applications and services. If the sound works when doing that, you'll know one of those items is interfering. You'd then need to start re-enabling some to determine which is the culprit.

  • Buying a new MBP Retina, is the top end Haswell i7 worth the extra $200?

Spec'ing out a brand new 15" MBP… I'm upgrading from my 2008 Core 2 Duo model with 6GB RAM. The question is, specifically:
As a graphic designer who uses Adobe Creative Cloud pretty extensively (Indesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects), will the extra $200 for any extra 300mhz of processor be worth the added cost?
Already the machine is pretty beefy, just wondering what the community thinks.
    Hollah.

    not in my opinion.

  • How could they not let top-end Bluetooth Headsets activate Voice Control

I love Voice Control. It was an important feature missing from the 3G. Also was a video function. They addressed both with the 3GS. But then what do they do, forget to let Voice Control be accessed by a Bluetooth Headset.
Don't get my wrong, probably not all Bluetooth Headsets can support picking up a Voice Control function from a random cell phone. But I have a $140 Headseat, the Motorola Pure H15. This is the Nissan GTR of Bluetooth Headsets. Trust me, if there's a function that a headset can possess, this one has it and more.
So after pairing with the 3GS, why can't it gain access to the Voice Control? Hold the H15 button and the 3GS redials the last number dialed, which is a universal language between headset and cell phone. So I know that works, but push the button and the H15 attempts to connect and shows this by expressing several different tones: an access tone, then a deactivated tone. It's a weird combination of tones when pressing the button, it's trying but not getting through.
I hope Apple can fix this by way of software and avoid a hardware revision. Please please! I hope it's a quick fix and that Apple has this missing function on their priority list of future updates.

fear not... the people out there testing 3.1 mention that voice control works via Bluetooth on 3.1 so just give it a couple months and the feature will be there

  • Basic system struggling with Standard Def MPG files

We built two news editors about 6 months ago and needed to build both computers for $1200.  These were replacing two old Avid Newscutter XP systems from 2004...
Because we were shooting DVCAM on DSR-250 camera's or to .mov/.avi DV files on nNovia QC Decks on the camera's, the files were basic DV 25Mbps content in SD.
Based on the System Requirements of Adobe for Premiere CS5, I didn't feel I needed to build these as top end machines at the time.
    They are as follows:
    MSI Motherboard 77T-C45  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130270
AMD Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition 3.2 GHz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103846

    Corsair 400W Power supply  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139008
Looking back at it now, and after reading a lot of posts, these systems are on the low end.  Guess that is how Adobe gets more people to buy software, make it look like it will run on what you have, after you shell out the cash on the program you realize you have to upgrade hardware too..
The systems have been working great for the SD footage we needed them for.  We are not going HD anytime soon as our entire studio, routers, switcher, CG, playout system, studio camera's and pretty much everything else would need updating. So I wanted editors that were more user friendly and would handle what we were working with and that is what I got.  Figured in 3-5 years when HD comes along for us it will be time for entire new system on CS7 with 30 cores, 1 TB of memory and such... (More's Law)...
So new twist to the issue.  We were having a lot of issues with camera's dying the last few months.  It was getting hard to keep the DSR-250s working and even though I can buy them for $1000-$1500 used off of e-bay and they are in way better shape than ours, they were big, bulky and our reporters "one man band" it a lot and two of the young women are just shy of 5 foot.  You should see a petite little reporter lug a huge shoulder mount camera up onto the tripod and run it when it is bigger than them.. Really funny!!
So I pushed for new camera's and found the new Sony HXR-NX5U met all our needs in that it is a Z1/Z5 style camera (smaller format) but has "NO TAPE"...Shoots to SD cards and a 4 GB class 2 gives 58 min each in SD.
It will shoot HD as AVCHD 24Mbps files and does SD as Mpeg-2 and 9 Mbps with AC3 audio.  I demo'd a camera from Sony and did a lot of testing with it, I played a few clips on the CS5 systems and everything seemed ok.  They did require a quick render and I think that has to do with the Mpeg-2 compression.  It is about 1/4-1/2 time render so a 5 minute clip will take 1-2.5 minutes roughly to render out.  Playback is ok even when not rendered but the video looks fuzzy on the CRT monitor looped off of our Firewire DSR-11 DVCAM deck.  Not a big deal, they can edit and render at the end before dumping to tape.
Problem that came up today (we just started using the new camera's this week), when I went to diagnose system crashing, I found a simple news package on the timeline.  Maybe 40 small clips, edited into a package, with simple edits.  It was already rendered but I noticed the fan on the system was running fast which only happens if the CPU is working hard.  (Front Case Fan 120mm is on the CPU fan header PWM control, CPU fan is on Northbridge fan connector non-PWM controlled)  So the CPU fan (stock) is running at full speed but I used the MB temp monitoring to control the front fan so I could have a quiet system when it is not working hard.
That led me to open the task manager.  I found that the CPU is running along at 94-98% for both Cores.  Ram is ok as Premiere was using about 1.8GB of the 4 GB in the system.  I checked the other system and it was doing the same thing.
What is odd, is premiere is just sitting there with a timeline open, mpeg-2 clips on it and me not doing anything it stays at 92% continually.  I even close the project so I am out at the "new project" "Open Project" screen and no change.  If I hit exit, then the CPU drops right away down to 7% and is fine.  Open premiere back up into a project and CPU goes right back up.  During a timeline Render it is 100%.
We are able to edit and they seem to work but it is causing the system to run Hot and is running the CPU at near max all the time. I added two more 80mm fans out the back that will help pull more hot air out.
Is my chip way to slow for mpeg?  is there a setting that I must change to optimize editing mpeg-2?  I am assuming it is the work to decode the video on the fly, something the DV video didn't require so much CPU for.  I am not using GPU acceleration as I do not have a card that supports it even with the hack that I know of.  And GPU Acc. doesn't work for DV firewire output either.
    I am considering the following:
    1. Buy larger aftermarket CPU cooler and overclock my chip as many say this "Black Edition" with an unlocked multiplier is a breeze to overclock up to 4 Ghz range. (but still only 2 cores)
    2. Buy a replacement 4 or 6 core processor to replace it (also with the better than stock Cooler from above)
The only problem is having to spend so much money on additional hardware.
I am also going to optimize Windows 7 on these editors as I think Areo is running and other none essential things.
The big question is why is it maxing out when doing NOTHING?????  Is it just trying to build that freeze frame on the screen as it is a picture between the I- frames? (i.e. not a real frame of video but one created by decoding the info of IPPBPPIPPBPPI etc.)
Any idea's/help would be great.  Anyone else using this camera and the SD files?  I didn't think this would be an issue as I had read post that people were editing this kind of stuff on CS3 a few years back.  Can't believe it would cause a newer system so much grief..

As you may have seen I posted your results. Your statement:
Looking back at it now, and after reading a lot of posts, these systems are on the low end.
is damn accurate. 8-th rank from the bottom and around 32 x slower than a fast system, out of nearly 200 systems tested. For DV that is still perfectly acceptable, but for AVCHD it is not enough.
Your problem is the same in every industry. One can increase productivity and reduce hazards or improve working conditions (like less bulky and heavy cameras), but only at a price, by investing in new technology. It makes no sense to only invest in new cameras, without also investing in new computer equipment. It would be similar to investing in new production machinery in a plant, but postponing the training required for employees to properly use that new machinery. IMO that is a typical example of 'penny-wise, pound foolish'.
When I built these systems 8 months ago, I was originally going to get CS4, then I read on the site the CS5 was just around the corner, didn't want to buy the version on it's way out so I held off.  I had never been to this forum, wish I had, things might be different....  I went off of this list when deciding what we would need:
Intel® Core™2 Duo or AMD Phenom® II processor; 64-bit support required
64-bit operating system required: Microsoft® Windows Vista® Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise with Service Pack 1 or Windows® 7
2GB of RAM (4GB or more recommended)
10GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on removable flash-based storage devices)
7200 RPM hard drive for editing compressed video formats; RAID 0 for uncompressed
1280x900 display with OpenGL 2.0–compatible graphics card
Adobe-certified GPU card for GPU-accelerated performance
Adobe-certified card for capture and export to tape for SD/HD workflows
OHCI-compatible IEEE 1394 port for DV and HDV capture, export to tape, and transmit to DV device
Sound card compatible with ASIO protocol or Microsoft Windows Driver Model
DVD-ROM drive compatible with dual-layer DVDs (DVD+-R burner for burning DVDs; Blu-ray burner for creating Blu-ray Disc media)
QuickTime 7.6.2 software required for QuickTime features
Broadband Internet connection required for online services*
I understand competely now that these systems are too slow, Adobe's own specs are way to low. I knew I was on the low end but the problem is we built them for DV so I wasn't expecting them to do much more than that.  According to Adobe, I was in the (recommended Spec, not even the minimum...)  If I was wanting to attempt AVCHD right now I would start over, but the desire now is to edit .mpg clips.  It seems to be able to do that but when we have a few on the timeline and they are rendered the CPU just maxes out for no reason. But I have trouble duplicating it myself...
Today I went in and there was one .mpg clip on a timeline.  I checked the CPU and it was running at 98%.  I closed that project, started a new one with standard DV NTSC same as the reporters. Imported the same .mpg file that was on this reporters project.  I placed it on the timeline just as she had it and did some cuts and worked with it for over 5 minutes.  Rendered it all and the CPU looked fine, maybe 40-50% in bursts.  Playing it would cause it to go up some, stop it would go down.  Could not get it to do what it was doing for her.  Closed my project re-opened hers and boom CPU to 98% again.
    here are some screenshots:
You can see here is where opening her project caused the spike.  Then not doing anything with Premiere it just floats along the top...
Media Cache on E:\ Drive, same as the project and .mpg file.  1 TB 7200 RPM drive.
Proceses that are running, mspaint only running as that is what I did the paste of the Alt+Print Screen to grab the task manager with.

  • Can't get Macbook Pro to power on at all

Hi, hope someone can help with this.
Yesterday the comp was working fine, only thing I can think of is that the fans may have been running at the higher rpm for longer than usual.
Shut it down properly, came back the next day and I'm getting no response from the power button.
When connected to the mains there is a clicking noise from the top right of the machine, if you hold the button the clicking sounds like a car indicator, when "running" from the just the battery there is no sound.
The battery will charge as normal.
6 months ago the logic board was replaced due to the nvida issue then about a month after that the IO board failed. I replaced the IO board myself due to an "authorised" tech not being authorised and so ruining any warranty on the logic board. I've tried the old IO board and still no response.
I've tried disconnecting the HD and holding the power button for 5 secs when not connected to anything with no luck.
Anyone got any ideas or am I just extremely unlucky as every apple product seems to have a hardware fail with me!
It's an A1226 early 08. Any ideas would be good, I'm really hoping it hasn't just suddenly become an expensive door stop.
    cheers
    colin

After having another look at it again last night I think I was wrong in saying the click was coming from the right. It's coming from the left, think it's roughly where the mag connecter hits the io board. I'm still no further forward.
The replacement logic board only had a warranty of 30 days!! Also as the folk I got to replace the board under warranty were no longer "apple authorised" despite claiming they were, they actually ruined any apple warranty I would have had anyway. This is what has forced me into having to try and fix it myself.
I'm scared it is the logic board as the price of a new one completely puts me of trying that as a fix if this one has only lasted 6 months! Completely out of order that a serious top end machine has in just under 3 years had 2 failed logic boards, 1 failed power adapter and a failed io board.

  • Can anyone help me with a 3 week old Infinity Conn...

    Hi
Let me get it out there, I'm bored of BT, I'm bored of BT India and I'm bored of customer services moving you round to someone else and lying to you about what they said.  You find someone who says they want to help, then you call them back and they deny even talking to you for example.  BT India all seem good guys, but they just say the same thing.  I had one bloke last night tell me that the picture on the new Infinity purchase page of BT.com was a HH2 and if that if I couldn't see it, I was looking at the wrong thing. I left BT in 2007, when I'd had enough of poor service, slow speed and being forced to use a Netgear G at my own cost - but I digress
I had Infinity installed 3 weeks ago.  The Engineer was great.  He installed new cable from the pole, rejigged my wiring internally, tested it all, stayed for ages and made sure ALL of my equipment connected, yes Desktop, 3 lappies, XBox even making sure Sky was showing 'connected' - top bloke.  When he left, he had his laptop and my laptop, both top end machines with N cards were showing 38MB's speed, the Ipad which gets a bad press because they don't utilise the N connection was getting 20MB and all my other machines got 18-20MB on G cards - which I was told was because of G (I still don't know this to be true - but seemed reasonable) - I even had a demo of 4 machines actively streaming iplayer to give me the WOW factor
So, here we are today.  I've given 6 hours to BT India over 4 days.  We've tested everything twice, changed and swapped wifi adapters, moved the HH2 around the house, connected by wire, not by wire, changed through ALL the channels, TWICE, amended the box settings, run speedster and speedtest.net and all we've proved is that the most I get is 20MB on wire, BUT this only then transfers to 10MB at best on any device.  This is on a isolated device, tried at different times of the day etc etc.
The best quote I've had from BT India, was - 20MB, that's not bad is it.  Well it's not bad, but I'm paying for 40MB and I'd like to give WIFI a bash if that's ok with you mate
I get connected to a lady in the 'disconnections' team Monday because BT India was unable to help me further.  She looked at her system and concluded that the tick was in the wrong box her end.  She apparently unticked it, reticked somewhere else, told me to give it 24 hours and any problems give her a call on her direct line.
I waited - no change - in fact BT Speedster last night told me that my profile had now gone down to 19MB max - so I called her today where I got a stroppy colleague, who insisted she couldn't help, no-one would have told me that, didn't know what was going on and she was happy to disconnect me, but I'd have to pay about £200.  Did I want to do that - if not, I need to phone technical
So, now you've read my boring post - What the heck do I do
You can't complain to anyone because no-one takes responsibility.  You can't get a new Hub because the ones they sell here now http://bit.ly/cOKodz are in fact HH2's honest Guv, despite the lights being horizontal instead of vertical and a different shape and size.  How do BT get away with this?
I'm stuck with a service that delivers the same 02 did to me on 'worse cables' but for £15.00 a month more and wifi loss that can't be solved and a hub that can't be faulted because BT are scripted to say all is well

  • What sort of dial-up modems does one use with a "Bionic Desk Lamp" iMac?

Yes, I still use dial-up (and indeed, my aging Performa 5215 is still on its factory 14.4 modem).
I'm planning on buying a used G4 iMac on eBay (see my posting in the OS 9 forum for related questions), but what sort of dial-up modem do I use, that will work in both OS 9 and OS X?

Outside of perhaps a handful of top-end machines, printing on special media, I've never seen inkjet output that looked any better than MicroDry output on comparable media. Moreover:
    1. With the exception of hot-wax-jet systems, inkjet output is soggy, and takes time to become waterproof (assuming that ever happens without spraying varnish on the page); MicroDry output is as dry and waterproof as laser output.
    2. Inkjet has the highest cost of consumables of any printing technology ever devised. If you use your printer like crazy, you rapidly empty the often-expensive cartridges. If you don't use it like crazy, the often-expensive cartridges clog and/or dry out. By contrast, laser toner and MicroDry ribbons have a once-opened shelf-life that is whole orders of magnitude greater than that of inkjet cartridges, and the only way to ruin them is to (laser) print so many blank pages you overflow the waste-toner receptacle, or (MicroDry) break the ribbon (and that can be fixed with about half an hour's work)
    3. MicroDry is one of the few printing technologies that can print metallic colors and opaque white, and can also automatically varnish their output. The more advanced MicroDry models also have a dye sublimation mode (with optional varnish) that allows them to double as the cheapest-to-run dyesubs available.
The ALPS MicroDry printer line flopped in the marketplace for two reasons. First, they didn't offer PCL or PostScript, even as an option, and (especially in dyesub mode) host-based RIPping is a long, slow, memory-intensive process (that's been known to crash my long-suffering Performa 5215). Second, ALPS has absolutely no name recognition in the United States except among engineers and technicians. This meant that they were fighting an uphill battle just to get anybody to look at their products.
Moreover, the few attempts ALPS made at strategic alliances (to overcome the lack of name recognition) were with a company (Citizen) that isn't known for much beyond digital watches and (maybe) hand calculators, and a company (Epson) that had strong financial reasons to suppress MicroDry, color laser, and anything else that competed with inkjet.
On that last note, may I point out that when a color laser printer small enough, cheap enough, and quiet enough to be classified as an "inkjet-killer" finally hit the market last year, it came from Samsung, a company that had name recognition, but absolutely no inkjet assets whatsoever.
