Check the system and video boards against the Hardware Compatibility List at http://access1.sun.com
In reply to the 18 Sept 2000 post:
You need to boot the system to the Device Configurastion Assistant Floppy that should be included in you media kit. Solaris is not a program that installs under windows or any other OS. It is an OS in itself and in order to set up a system to run it and another OS you will need to dual boot the system. The documentation cdrom has several of the Install documents in html format, just be sure your existing OS supports long pathnames or you will have to use the "File -> Open" method of browsing.
    Hope it helps!

  • Cursor and black screen on XFree86 server with DirectFb backend

    Hi all.
I need to bring up lightweight XFree86 server with DirectFB as video backend on CE Linux (Intel Set Top Box). For now I've done following:
    1.    Compiled and tested DirectFB with multi application support (fusion library).
    2.    Compiled XFree86 with DirectFB as backend.
    3.    X based applications (xclock, for example) can be drawn from device on remote display after exporting DISPLAY variable.
    4.    XDirectFB server can be started successfully without errors.
I faced with following X server problems:
    1.    I can see only black display with active graphic mouse cursor once I started X server and any X application (xclock, for example). Its looks like application windows are drawn but invisible on a screen. When I moving mouse, cursor changes from arrow to resize or others icons.
    2.    When I try to use XFree86 as remote X server for drawing, client program issue XRandr command is not supported. Again I can see blank black screen and valid mouse cursor, which seems manage invisible windows.
    3.    XFree86 manuals points that X server uses configuration files /etc/X11/xorg.conf  or /etc/X11/XF86Config for video/input devices settings. Does XFree86 with DirectFB video backend use such configuration files? Which one? What video driver should I define there? I have tried both of configuration files without success. It seems X server ingoring them.
    Appreciate advices, suggestions and visions.
Please note me if additional information requires.
    Medvic.

I have discovered solutions for my problems (unfortunaly not causes). Hope this helps someone.
    1. I can see only black display with active graphic mouse cursor once I started X server
I have found that XDirectFB binary accepts 'defaultOpacity' (default opacity for created top level windows)argument which can vary in <1-255> range. Value 1 corresponds to full invisibility windows state and 255 to zero opacity. It seems 255 is default value for opacity, but in my case screen still black/blank. I set 254 opacity and wow! Its a miracle - I can see windows!!!
    2. When I try to use XFree86 as remote X server for drawing ... I can see blank black screen and valid mouse cursor
Now I can use my X server for rendering remote client's graphic applications.
    3. ... Does XFree86 with DirectFB video backend use such configuration files? Which one? What video driver should I define there?
It seems indeed XDirectFB server doesn't use any configuration files. For my case X server normally starts without configuration files.
If you have any questions or need some clarifications, please contact me.
    Regards, Medvic.

  • Ugly Xfree86 Upgrade

My apologies for the ugly Xfree86 upgrade that's waiting in the repositories.
With XFree86 4.2.x we used external fontconfig and xft2 libraries to render truetype fonts.  Then Xfree86 4.3.0 came out and used its own internal versions of these libraries, so we made the new X conflict with fontconfig, since both provided the same .so files.
Some users have been requesting that we rebuild XFree86 and link it to the (newer) external fontconfig/freetype2 libraries, rather than opting to use the internal ones.  This gets tricky, because the old Xfree86 4.3.0-6 package _conflicts_ with the fontconfig library, while the new Xfree86 4.3.0-7 _depends_ on it.  Pacman will not allow this upgrade.
To properly upgrade X, you will have to remove Xfree86 from your  system, then reinstall it (you'll probably have to drop out of X to do this, btw).  Don't worry about your /etc/X11/XF86Config file, it will stay where it is.
    # pacman -Rd xfree86
    # pacman -Sy xfree86

followed the main page instructions on the ugly xfree86 upgrade.
but as pointed out in this thread
    nvidia was NOT mentioned
it is not mentioned because nvidia cards are not universal to all systems.
    and therefor
X gets removed but not reinstalled.
i don't get this when you pacman -R(d) something your are removing it it is not automatically replaced
    had to remove /usr/lib/libGL....
    to get X to install
no you did not have to you could have either first removed your nvidia drivers and then installed (as you would have to reinstall anyway) or simply pacman -Sf xfree86 this would replace the nvidia libGL and replace it with Xfree86's libGL. then reinstall the drivers.
I request that more info be placed in the main notice about the X upgrade, since it will do not good when the victim removes X and can't get X back
yes a little more info could have been placed in the original news item but at that time the full extent of what was needed to be done on some systems was not known. this should be in the FAQs and other official documentation until 0.5 is history (iso-wise that is).
no way to check these boards without X.
when you rely on x too much and fancy gui tools you quickly forget the beauty of *nix systems. that being they are very functional without a gui. the internet and world wide web were being browsed from the console long before fancy gui browsers came along. you can use links or lynx for example to browse the web and the forum. you can even login and post. it isn't pretty or necessarily quick browsing within pages but it is very very functional.
plus not to mention the invassive change of
    /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
    to
    twm
it was invasive only because you did not schedule this file to be ignored. otherwise it will always be replaced. all distros usually replace this file upon upgrade. you only noticed it because you changed the default settings.
Does the "Ugly X-86 " problem occur every time you try to upgrade ...even after performing the outlined procedure the first time?
this is the only time you should have this trouble. this problem came about because fontconfig was separated out of the Xfree86 code as it was getting too old and uncompliant with newer software.
s there relief from this problem by installing an earlier version of X-86? What is lost if one should be able to do that?
well basically you would be pretty well screwed for upgrading alot of things.
What happens to the GUI KDE when this procedure is utilized? How does one recover from the impact on KDE? Is there any other consequence?
well basically i advise that you do this upgrade outside of X. it is just easier. there will be no effect on KDE but you could have problems running the new KDE if you do not upgrade X.
Frequent upgrades are recommended for arch or any linux OS. This makes such a mess of the process , if it happens every time, that I am discouraged about arch which is touted as a fast distro.
well you are drawing all sorts of conclusions from one really old post. there have been several upgrade of Xfree86 in arch and this was the first time that it was a bit messy. but to be honest it is hardly as bad as it sounds for every post in the thread by someone that had a problem there are probabaly ten who didn't.
if you are going to judge this distro without using it then well mabe you should move along. sorry but really why complain if you are not even using it? besides there is an easy way to avoid this issue altogether. download the base iso and then upgrade and install x and all of your other desired programs. this way you will get the new x and not even have to deal with the x from the full cd. you could also do an ftp install and not have to worry about anything.

  • Question about XFree86 4.4

Which configuration file does XFree86 4.4 use in /etc/X11?
    XF86Config or XF86Config-4.hwd
I've both on my system and I have been running Version 4.3 and now 4.4 and acording to documentation the config file should be called XF86Config-4
This leaves me perplexed so any help in this would be appreciated.

You need to be sure the loop back device is up and "127.0.0.1  localhost" is in the /etc/hosts file.

  • XFree86 in Laptop with external monitor (Solved)

I have a Dell Inspiron 8100, and my problem is that it's lcd display backlight bulb is not working.
Is it possible to configure xFree86 to work in my laptop with an external monitor? I have tried
to configure it but failed in getting it working. All I could get is an image full of mad green, white
and black pixels. My external monitor is an AOC CT720g 17" CRT monitor.
Sorry for my late response I was enjoying my vacations.
I install xorg and xfce, it runs smoothly. The problem was
    XFree86.
Thanks in advance for your help,
                                                Nautivus

Well you're right it works with the "FN + F8" switch in Windows.
So now I know it is a hardware switch. I will try configuring it as
my only monitor and with XORG. My video card is an NVIDIA GeForce2 GO.
How I can configure it so I can use the hardware switch to alternate
    from one monitor to another?
    Thanks in advance,

  • Pacman -Syu today...Kernel2.6.5-2 and XFree86-4.4.0-1

Attempted the upgrade and received query....remove ttf-bitstream-vera?
       Answered Yes.   Prceeded with upgrade.
      Loading of XFree86-4.4.0-1 encountered conflicts.
Is it again necessary to remove XFree86 before the upgrade and install it after removal as was done per announcements?
      Does ttf-bitstream-vera go back in? :?:  :?:  :?:

Two other fonts /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi(75dpi also) arealready in filesystem.
       These conflicts halt the upgrade.

  • MBP Display Parameters for Running Soloris in Parallels

I just got Solaris installed through Parallels. Thing is, Soloris doesn't recognize any of the video parameters through Parallels. I have to go in there and put them in manually. Currently, the res is stuck at 1600x1200 which is too big for my display.
I've tried the following with no success:
    1. login as root run: kdmconfig
    2. choose: Xsun server
    3. Select: Change Video Device/Monitor
    4. Then start selecting the type of monitor.

    : 1024x768 - 65536 colors @ 60Hz
    Any success stories or suggestions?

Parallels support is at http://forums.parallels.com/. As for Solaris I guess you need to find their support site.

  • Xfree86 4.1 on Solaris 8.0 configuration

    Hi,
My nVidia Geforce2 GTS card is not supported by Solaris, so I tried using Xfree86 (4.1), and followed the instructions step-by-step from:
    http://www.sun.drydog.com/faq/8.html
However, I keep getting the error message "Unable to start XServer on unix:0 " And the system returns to command login.
So I went back to using the default XSun, by simply copying back the files I had backed up.
Does anyone know a workaround? Or another source for detailed instructions on configuring it?
I am stuck with using Sun's X server with 400*600, with a horrid gray screen! That in itself is not a problem, but it wont allow installers of other programs to run due to the resolution.
    Thanks in advance!
    v1x.
PS: The complete config is as follows:
AMD Athlon, Asus A7M-266, 512Mb, 40Gb HDD, nVidia Geforce2 GTS 32Mb DDR card, Compaq MV 940 Monitor, on-board sound.

    Configure XFree86 as follows
    # XFree86 -configure
Write down the testing instructions which appear on the screen.
Now edit the /root/XF86Config.new file and change your mouse device to /dev/kdmouse for PS/2 mouse or /dev/kmouse for USB mouse. Execute the test instruction which you previously wrote down. You should have a gray screen with a movable X cursor.
If all is good, copy /root/XF86Config.new to /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.
    Copy /usr/dt/config/Xservers to /etc/dt/config/Xservers. Edit /etc/dt/config/Xservers and replace the occurence of /usr/openwin/bin/Xsun :0 -nobanner with /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 :0
    Reboot

  • Memory leak when redirecting to a remote XFree86 server

    Hi,
I'm running a Java application, which controlls our network equipment.
The application is written by our development team. It installs a graphical
user frontend in order to allow interoperation with the network administrators.
The application is run using the following environments:
    * Windows NT 4.0
    * Sun Solaris 8, local Xsun X11 server
    * Sun Solaris 8, XFree86 X11 server located on a linux host
    * Sun Solaris 8, CygWin/XFree86 X11 server running on a Windows NT host
It turns out, that the application runs fine, if the application and the GUI either
run both on a Windows NT host or the Sun workstation. However, if the application
is launched on a Sun workstation and the X display is redirected to any XFree86
X11 server, each change of the GUI focus - either forced by a mouse-click, or
an canvas being changed by the application itsself - consumes an amount of
3 MB of memory and never releases this again.
So I suppose any memory leak in the Swing/X11 interface ...
I've already searched SunSolve and installed all patches addressing memory leaks
in Solaris 8 and Xsun ...
Also our development team already has profiled the application using tools
like OptimizeIt without being able to locate any memory leak.
Has anyboday seen this before? Is there any bugfix/workaround available?
    Thx in advance,
    Jens Hamisch

We just noticed the same problem for our Swing Applet using JDK 1.4 on Solaris 8 displayed to any remote X server running on Windows 2000 or Linux. If we let the applet run long enough (the plot in the applet updated every second), we could easily use up 500-600 Mb. Again, on the local console on Solaris or Windows 2000 the memory was stable at around 70 Mb.

  • Upgrading from Xfree86 to Xorg?

    Hi all,
I was just wondering if someone could give me some feedback on what would be the best/easiest way to upgrade from XFree86 that is currently installed to Xorg? It appears that most of the Development is going to projected towards Xorg so I would like to move to that package to stay current. Any suggestions or links would be greatly appriciated. Thanks

kakabaratruskia wrote:I also did pacman -Sy xorg yesterday, and it was really easy. It removed xfree automatically and didn't have to configure anything, as it used my XF86Config. Startx worked without any trouble.
Xorg doesn't use XF86Config. Do you mean you renamed XF86Config to xorg.conf?
Xorg (and XFree86 4.4) guesses the config if there is no config file. So it can work without xorg.conf too..
Nop, it just read XF86Config. In fact when I ran xorgcfg, it just modified XF86Config and did not create a xorg.conf. Anyway, now I renamed my XF86Config to xorg.conf, to avoid any future compatibility problems.

  • Install/upgrade issue - xfree86

    Hi,
I noticed something when installing/upgrading the xfree86 package... pacman appears to only download a portion (<20%) of the package, then it installs it.  This isn't really a critical issue, since everything seems to work just fine, regardless.  I'm just wondering why this is
    BTW, I'm running fully-upgraded 0.4 arch.
    altair

There's an integer overflow bug in the progress bar code.  The file will download just fine, but the progress bar wraps after ~42mb.

  • Installing XFree86 4.1.0

I've tried to install XFree86 4.1.0 to have my geforce256 working properly. I've passed all the steps listed in the SolarisX86-FAQ (How do you install XFree86?). The test of the X-Server shows the normal X-startup background, mouse moves - seems to work. After I've set the link in /etc/dt/config/XServers to /usr/X11R6/bin/X (as explained in the FAQ) and a reboot, solaris couldn't boot into dtlogin (unable to run x-server on ...)
Has anyone else experienced the same problem? Does anyone know about other step-by-step installation guides for XFree86 (especially for Version 4.1.0 on Solaris 8)?
    Thanks, Andreas

I have xfree86 4.1 running on my Intel box. I don't know all the steps you did but isn't there a file that needs to be copied from "/usr/dt/XXX/xservers" to "/etc/dt/XXX/xservers. After the copy you need to edit it and tell it to use the xfree version of the xserver.
    Hope this helps.
