XFX 5770 causing problems at start-up (I think)

In order to purchase and use Final Cut Pro X, I purchased from MacMall the XFX 5770 HD video card and installed it in my machine.
I trusted that, because it was coming from MacMall and because I'd read that the graphics update brought greater compatibility for graphics cards, that it would work without a problem. When I saw that it came with a power cable I couldn't use, I got worried. After purchasing the correct cable (only about $6), I had the card in and booted my machine.
Everything seems to be working fine. I've got both screens visible and the software downloaded and launched, but tiny things here and there make me think something is still wrong.
1) System profiler says my card is a ATI Radeon HD 5000 and not 5770
2) Holding Option at boot hangs the system at a black screen and requires a forced reboot
3) A game (Civilization 5) now hangs at launch
So my questions about the above problems...
1) Is System Profiler just saying it's a member of the 5000 family and so this is of little concern?
2) Does a graphics card even make a difference this early in the boot process?
3) Is this indicative of something being wrong with my card?
And the overall question that is lingering underneath, should I try flashing my card?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
dennis
Edit: My machine is a MacPro3,1, Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 2.8 GHz

Thank you for your help. Unfortunately, I was beyond the 14 day return period for the card, but dropping my old card in confirmed that, if I connect a monitor to that card, I can again get the startup manager by holding option at boot AND my game works again.
Armed with that, I sought out info to flash my new card and found this excellent, and very simple tutorial. The card now reads as 5770 in the profiler AND the game launches without needing the old card, though I still can't boot holding option. Despite that last caveat, I consider the whole thing a success as I'll just keep the old card in the case for emergencies.
thanks!

  • I seriously don't know what caused this to start being a problem until today it worked fine, but I added an exception for popups full question in DETAILS

is there anyway to allow Firefox to allow pop ups from this 1 page of Facebook / well this 1 game https://apps.facebook.com/vampiresdarkside/ and not the entire pan in the Ass Pop up happy site, I cant see any sense in allowing popups from all
    apps.facebook.com
and when I try to add it as the exception should be your program edits it to be that crap above instead of the exception I entered specifically,
    apps.facebook.com/vampiresdarkside/
I seriously don't know what caused this to start being a problem until today it worked fine, but I added an exception for popups from this one site in Chrome and Firefox decided it wouldn't allow it popups from this part of Facebook and no I am not allowing all the FB apps to have popups I never had to before
    apps.facebook.com/vampiresdarkside/
have popups after adding the popup exception in chrome, and no I did nothing to Firefox but it is kinda asking me to switch to Opera or some other crap browser with it acting like this, I modified the exception in chrome and Firefox now wont allow the pop ups it always had up until chrome allowed them WTF

  • My Mac is 15 months old and all of a sudden it has started resetting the time and date then I get a message saying not all apps will work because of the pre Jan date any help as to why ? Causing problems with wireless router.

My Mac book pro is 15 months old and now suddenly it has started resetting the date and time, causing problems with applications and my wireless access. Any suggestions as to why this is happening and how to fix it?

Seems the time isn't being saved to your computer correctly, it may be a corrupt file that isn't saving the time anymore.
    You can move the
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
file out of your Users/Library/Preferences folder to the desktop and reboot.
then go to your System Preferences > Date and Time and set a time server close to your location (or in your time zone)
(trash the file on the desktop if no ill issues occur later on)
or you can follow/bookmark these support docs to reset your PRAM and SMC (and for future reference)

I don't remember exactly where OS X is keeping it time settings now, but I think one of those choices should help resolve your issue and won't hurt anything giving them a shot. Perhaps someone else could refresh my memory.

  • Severe problem while starting Lenovo 3000 N200

    Dear friends & experts,
I am using Lenovo 3000N200 0769BDG laptop. I have following problems while starting the system.
Recently my system was hacked against which I installed an Anti-Malware software. It showed that the system was free from any Malware.(But believe me, it is true that the system was hacked.). But each time on starting the system, a  black and white window  is being displayed which contains the following message:
We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows didnot start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.
If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration  to revert to the most recent settings that worked.
If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed , or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.
    Safe  Mode
    Safe Mode with Networking
    Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
    Start Windows Normally
Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.
    Seconds until Windows starts:30.....1
After 30 seconds, the Windows logo is displayed immediately followed by a Blue screen which lasts for 1 second and the system restarts.  I tried all the options listed above-- from Safe Mode to Start Windows Normally but the same problem recurrs. And the system doesn't shutdown until I press the power button.
I have a licensed version of Windows Xp SP3 as OS. I tried to repair the system using WinXP CD but I found the following message:
Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.
Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.
Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3.
A point to be noted is that earlier, I removed the Rescue & Recovery from my system  thinking that it might not be of much use and now, I lament for it.
When I press F3 the same window appeared and the same problem recurred.
I tried to access the files in my hard disk using Ubuntu CD and it was successful. I used Lenovo hardware quick test to check for any hardware faults, and my system passed all the tests.
I request you to help me in solving this problem so that I can continue my studies peacefully.
    Thanking you,
    With regards,
    T.I. Kiran

First off, being "hacked" and having viruses/malware are two different things. Someone hacking your computer doesn't really mean you have a virus/malware, it means an actual person gained access to your computer remotely and did something to it.
More than likely you got a virus that corrupt your Windows System directory and/or registry. Anti-malware software won't necescarily detect all viruses, especially executable that run commands to simply delete files.
The blue screen you're seeing is what us technicians call the BSOD (blue screen of death), it's an indication that there is a direct corruption with the core files that Windows requires to function properly.
As an IT Technician, if this were one of my laptops or one of my end-users, I would simply reload it with a fresh copy of Windows XP. There's a possiblity that all data you had on the laptop is gone because if the Windows core files are corrupt/missing, then that could very well mean your system was wiped completely but the boot table is in tact, hence the fact that you even have the option to boot Windows XP.
One other option I would suggest is try to reinstall Windows XP. Sometimes if you have the right copy of the install, it will let you reinstall the Windows XP core files, leaving your programs, files and directories in tact.
    Good luck.

  • TS3579 I found this useful because I did not know about the effect of typing in data and that you could only drag to rearrange the data.  I had typed in data before and this had caused problems but restoring defaults did not cause correct dates to show up

I found this  (TS3579: If the wrong date or time is displayed in some apps on your Mac Learn about If the wrong date or time is displayed in some apps on your Mac) useful because I did not know about the effect of typing in data and that you could only drag to rearrange the data.  I had typed in data before and this had caused problems but restoring defaults did not cause correct dates to show up in Finder.

It sounds like there are a couple things going on here.  First check if you have a successful install of SQL Server, then we'll figure out the connection issues.
Can you launch SQL Server Configuration Manager and check for SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) if default instance or SQL Server (other name) if you've configured your instance as a named instance.  Once you find this, make sure the service is started.
If not started, try to start it and see if it throws an error.  If you get an error, post the error message your hitting.  If the service starts, you can then launch SSMS and try to connect.  If you have a default instance, you can use the machine
name in the connection dialog.  Ex:  "COWBOYS" where Cowboys is the machine name.  However, if you named the SQL Server instance during install, you'll need to connect using the machine\instance format.  Ex:  COWBOYS\Romo (where Romo
is the instance name you set during install).
You can also look at the summary.txt file in the SQL Server setup error logs to see what happened on the most recent install.  Past install history is archived in the log folder if you need to dig those up to help troubleshoot, but the most
recent one may help get to the bottom of it if there is an issue with setup detecting a prior instance that needs to be repaired.

  • Purch. Req. to COPA link causing problems for PO Goods Receipt

A problem just started occuring in the past week and a half where our Warehouse staff could not receive in goods due to error: "Complete PA transfer structure FI".
What I have found out is that when a Purch. Req. is created with Account Assignment "F" (Internal Order - GR), the corresponding EKBN segment is being created with a Profitability Analysis segment ID (EKBN-PAOBJNR) and the Functional Location field (EKBN-FKBER) is left blank.
Previously, the PA Seg ID has been blank and the Functional Location fields has always contained a value.
This COPA link issue is causing havoc in our Receiving department and I can not find if there was a configurator's transport that caused it (no is fessing up to anything), or if a customer in the MM system set some type of flag -or- is some G/L Account was set up incorrectly that is causing a link to COPA when the PR eventually gets received into inventory.
    Help.

I have checked the KEI2 before and for our Assignment 30 we have "Other Costs", and in the "Source" for the Assignment Lines for #30, we have defined a Group (OTHERCOSTS).
This group or set contains the Cost elements which we now have to add to, every time we come across a new cost element or G/L account that is assigned to a PO with line items of Account Assignment Category "F".
The problem is that approximately 3 weeks ago if a PO was created with type "F" line items and the G/L account (cost element) in the Account Assignment portion of the PO was not one that was in the OTHERCOSTS Group/Set ... we had no problem doing the Goods Receipt of the PO -AND- a PA segment was created as well.
For now, we are just adding any new Cost elements to our OTHERCOSTS set if the need arises.

  • Problem of Starting the Server

    I just downloaded
    j2eesdk-1_4_02_2005Q2-windows.exe
to my windows machine and insatlled it.
When I started the verifying of Server by going to "Start menu, choose Programs -> Sun Microsystems -> Application Server PE-> Start Default Server", I did get the message as follows:
"Domain domain1 is ready to receive client requests. Additional services are being started in the background.....Press any key to continue"
But when I ran "http://localhost:8080", I got an error page with something like "can't find the web site".
I even tried to use "http://my real IP address here:8080", and I got the same error.
Could anyone tell me what might be the problem? Do I need to set up something somewhere else?
    Thanks a lot

BTW, the server.log file gives me these messages:

  • File Vault encryption locked up.  No progress for 24 hrs.  If I restore from a non-encypted back-up will this cause problems?

Started file vault yesterday and no progress for 24 hrs.  If I do a Command-R restore from a non-encrypted back-up will this cause problems?

You first must repartition and reformat the drive before restoring your backup.
Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should install the version of OS X that you had installed.

The Linux server is bound to the loopback device instead of the network interface. Try one of the following:
    1. Set the ORB's com.sun.CORBA.ORBServerHost Property to the hostname or IP address of the network interface on the Linux machine.
    2. Modify the 'etc/hosts' file on the Linux machine to make sure that the first entry contains the hostname and IP address of the network interface.

  • Problem while starting outlook 2010 - standard

on  starting outlook, the outlook is frequently verifying data integrity.it takes about an hour till the verification gets over.
    This problem has started recently.
    Kindly suggest a solution.

    Hi,
Which type of email account are you using? POP3, IMAP or Exchange?
Based on my research, this issue may be caused by the Outlook data file corruption. Please try to close all the custom pst-file opened in Outlook and then use the Inbox Repair Tool (Scanpst.exe) to scan and repair your Outlook data file to check
the result. If you are using an ost-file, just rename the ost file and restart Outlook to sync a new one. See:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/outlook-help/repair-outlook-data-files-pst-and-ost-HA010354964.aspx
If above doesn't fix the issue, please test it with a new mail profile (just create a new profile, don't delete the old one. you can switch back again if this issue is not related to the mail profile):
    http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/829918
Please let me know the result.

It's recommended to download and install
Configuration Analyzer Tool (OffCAT), which is developed by Microsoft Support teams. Once the tool is installed, you can run it at any time to scan for hundreds of known issues in Office
    programs.

  • Does adding V-Card to signature cause problems for Outlook (Windows) users?

    Hi -
I want to add a V-Card to my signature in Apple Mail (by drag and drop from address book to signature pane in Mail>Preferences).  I have read that, in the past, this can caused problems for some recipients who use Windows Outlook.
Is this still the case?  If so, how can I add a V-Card to my signature without causing problems for recipients?
    Thanks -
    Doug

I take note of your WNLB recommendation but in this case the error start on one of the CAS server first and client connected to the CAS that does not have any errors continue to work as normal.
I upgraded to SP3 late last year.  This problem first happened in Feb 2014.
Have you checked the DNS settings on the VM - yes, and both of them are pointing to one of our DC's.
I would set the client with a Host file to just one CAS to rule out the WNLB - this would be too hard
to manage as when the issue happens again it could happen on CAS1 but the client could be connected to CAS2 so it wont experience the issue.
