XGL/XIL graphics in future Solaris

I am aware that the xgl and xil libraries are not going to be supported long for Solaris. (An initialization call to xil actually sends a warning to stdout to this effect)
Does anyone know what a good migration plan away from these libraries is? I'm thinking OpenGL may be viable to replace xgl, but what about xil?
Any thoughts on this matter are much appreciated!

Well, anything with "Demo" or "Source" in the title you can delete usually without any problems.
It looks like everything in your list is X11 related. Its really a question for you. If you plan to perform TOTAL CLI type administration on this machine, you can delete the X11 stuff completely. This of course assumes there in nothing in the SunONE application software suite which doesn't require X11 capabilities for configuration. I've never used the SunONE app server but I SERIOUSLY doubt it does. More then likely its administration is browser based.
BUT, if you want to perform some limited X11 display back stuff from time to time, you're going to need the X11 stuff.

  • How to change mouse & graphics settings on Solaris 10?

I have Solaris 10 on x86. Before under Solaris 9, I used the "kdmconfig" command to change the mouse and graphics card settings.
What is the command to do this under Solaris 10, x86? Thanks.

    serendipity1276,
If you want to use Xorg in a console as root (su -) type /usr/X11/bin/xorgconfig This will walk you thru setting up X, and create a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. After completing the setup, log out and log back in. Your new settings should take effect. One interesting thing of note concerning mouse setup. If you're using a usb mouse, you should select "auto", otherwise if you select "imps2" for example, you're X server will not start.
    hope that helps,
    Dave S.

  • Voodoo 3000 graphic card on Solaris 7

Can anyone help me on this? I have Solaris 7 installed on my PC with a Voodoo 3000 graphic card. Somehow it only allows me to choose 16 color which is pretty bad. I tried other drivers and it didn't seem working. Do I have to change my graphic card in order to get the beautiful Solaris colors or there are some other ways I can configure my graphic card? Any help is appreciated.

    Have you tried XFree86 ??
    It's available at http://www.xfree86.org

  • How to configure a Graphic Terminal at Solaris 9

    Hello everyone!
Im having difficulties while finding a compatible Solaris 9 driver for my video card.
I have installed Solaris 9 in my PC, but I can only work with the text terminal, what is not interesting because I need to export a remote window from a server to my local machine.
Im using Diamond Multimedia Viper II Z200 as my video controler.
    Any help is useful.
Thank you all for the attention.

    From the command console run:
    /usr/sbin/kdmconfig
Configure the hardware device by selecting the closest match. Please pay attention to the other configurable items as well. Make certain you get the mouse, monitor size and display resolution correct in the process or you may end up locked onto a blank screen.
I don't recall seeing that type of (Diamond?) Video Card in the device options of kdmconfig but I have never looked for it. Perhaps you might want to slip a common ATI or Nvidia card into your AGP slot if you can't find a device driver for yours.
    best...

  • Linux emulation in Solaris 10

Hello, I am having trouble getting a Linux program to work in Solaris 10 build 61. I took bin/mktemp, lib/ld-linux.so.2, and lib/ld-2.2.5.so from Debian stable and the program dumped core with FLTBOUNDS / SIGSEGV when I ran it with chroot . bin/mktemp. I also tried a non-chroot variant with libraries copied to /lib, running a stand-alone lib/ld-linux.so.2, a different Linux flavour (ASPLinux) -- nothing helps. Could anyone please shed some light on what is the proper way of running Linux programs in Solaris?

There are rumors that a future Solaris 10 release might be able to execute native linux binaries.
Solaris 10 b60 is not able to run native linux binaries, AFAIK.
You may be able to run a native linux application with the help of "lxrun".

  • Solaris 8 in Netra t1 105

    Hi, all.
    I get a couple of netra t1 105, and I'thinking about install Solaris 8 02/02.
Does the netra support that release?.
If so, need I patch them?.
Where can I get information about hardware platforms witch support Solaris 8. I didnt find any about this in sunsolve.com
    Any info is welcome.
    Thanks all.

The SunSolve System Handbook will show you minimum OS requirements for any Sun machine. The sun4u architecture (includes Netra t1 105) is in no danger of going End Of Life any time soon as it is supported in Solaris 9 and future Solaris 10. The support for sun4d architecture (SPARC Center 1000 & 2000) got dropped in Solaris 9. sun4m architecture (SPARC 5, 10 & 20) may get dropped in Solaris 10 but the sun4u architecture will be around for a while. There hasn't been a new architecture released since sun4u so there's nothing to worry about for quite a while.See:

  • Ultra 45 & Solaris 8, yes or no?

    Hi,
considering purchasing a few new workstations and in particular Ultra 45's. Currently have a Solaris 8 environment and need to know whether I can run Solaris 8 on these boxes or not.
Everywhere I've looked so far only mentions Solaris 10 1/06 which comes preinstalled, but I can I reinstall to Solaris 8?
    Thanks in advance.
    Mark

Yes I agree with Rukbat, the earlier versions of Solaris don't have kernel support for PCI-E and PCI-X. Solaris is backward compatable, but then again you may have licensing issues. Contact Sun and request information about future Solaris 8/9 kernel revisions that may support this hardware.

  • D-Link 562M modem does not works in Solaris 10 (?)

I use D-Link 562M external USB 56K modem. Modem works in Windows but does not works in Solaris 10 (?). Help me!

    pat.gibbons wrote:
Not supported yet but will be in a future Solaris Express release. Many USB modems are not really modems but the entire signal processing is done by the host computer. Such "winmodems" require signal processing software which is quite complex. I do not think that such modems are supported in the following versions of Solaris.
If the 562M is NOT such a modem (but a "real" one) it should be quite easy to adapt a driver to work with this modem.

  • Solaris 10 on P4R800-V

    Hi!
I had Solaris 10 beta build 72 running on a P4R800-V. It has onboard ATI graphics (128MB). Solaris installed with a resolution of 800 x 600 far below the TFTs optimum 1280 x 1024, so not particularly fun to read from.
This latest Solaris release is even worse than the beta. It installs the desktop at 640 x 480 and the GUI provides no options to increase it. 640 x 480 is the only resolution listed.
I need to determine if the situation can at all be improved for my board, and if so, a step-by-step for the configuration of properly recognised graphics.
Any hints or links welcome, Thanks!

  • How to stop and start IGS(internet graphic server)

    Hi Techies
How to stop and start IGS(internet graphic server) in Solaries
    IGS is 7.0 1patch
Is this the command to stop and start IGS
    stopigs and startigs
If this correct will there be any issues if i stop the IGS from the above command
    Thank You
    Haroon

    Hoi Haroon
On base 6.40 there were stopigs/startigs scripts, yes. When we upgraded our systems to 7.0 I encountered the same problem, the igs could be stopped, but not started anymore (externally). Can you check, if the startigs/stopigs-scripts are 7.0 or 6.40.
I then opened an oss and got as answer:
"To start and to stop the igs there's only the offical way by stopping and starting the sap system".
However I found a solution to start and stop:
    start:
    nohup /sapmnt/<SID>/exe/igswd_mt -mode=profile pf=/usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/profile/<Instaneprofile> &
    e.g.:
    nohup /sapmnt/P72/exe/igswd_mt -mode=profile pf=/usr/sap/P72/SYS/profile/P72_DVEBMGS01_migzmc10 &
    stop:
--> stopigs, therefore the 6.40-stopigs script has to remain in the exe directory.
    Hope this helps.

  • Solaris for desktop use.

I'm not actually a developer, but i hope it's ok that i post this question anyway :D .
I'm considering downloading solaris 10, as i'm tired of Microsoft windows.
Does Solaris do a good job as a desktop OS?
Is it easier to use for a total newbie (me), than MandrivaLinux and other major Distro's?
Is there any good graphics apps for solaris? I need something like Photoshop and Cinema4d (for solaris ofcourse). Is there any good alternatives?
Also i'd need a good C++ development environment with debugging and code completion preferably.
    All help is appreciated.
    Kind Regards Bjerrk

    Thanks for the quick answer.
I know the GIMP and i've used it a little.
I'm pleased to hear that there is a good C++ DE.
But if it isn't all that easy i think i'll go with novell/SUSE.
Is there any good *nix 3d apps?

  • Solaris 10 nvidia drivers for w2100z

Subject says it all really. Does anyone (from within Sun I guess) have an ETA for the Sol 10 nvidia drivers? I think the W2100z is a great machine, but it's a disappointment that we don't yet have proper drivers for its graphics card.

Yes, Solaris 10 provides the Nvidia open source drivers from XFree86/Xorg which work with almost all Nvidia graphics cards. Additionally Sun & Nvidia are working on porting Nvidia's closed source accelerated drivers, and it was recently announced that those should be available in June.
