Xgrid and Leopard Server

Is Leopard Server required on the Xgrid controller or can the controller be running Leopard client?

The controller can be using the client version of Leopard; click here for more information.

  • IPod Touch and Leopard Server network

At school we have staff and students beginning to explore iPod Touches as a classroom resource. There is no problem getting them to use the school's AirPort network, but some apps, such as Google Earth will not run.
I'm wondering if anyone has experience of using iPod touches in a Leopard Server environment and if they have any tips or hints to share please?

    Hi Brian,
You really should have to do anything specific on your network to make the touch work with Leopard Server. Here are a few questions to point you in the right direction:
Are you seeing any specific error messages?
Are you blocking any ports on your network?
Have you looked at the log files from a device that is exhibiting this behavior?
    Good luck,
    Jon

  • Netgear DG834N and Leopard Server VPN

Has anyone had the Netgear DG834N up and running with Leopard Server's VPN service?
I've had it recommended to me by someone who has been using for VPN and Tiger Server.

Well, I have now. Works just fine.

  • DrayTek Vigor 120 and Leopard Server VPN

Does anyone successfully use the DrayTek Vigor 120 (UK) with Leopard Server's VPN? Can't find any explicit support of VPN pass-through.

Hello, I got this VPN working with a 2820 draytek.. Where the draytek is allowing pass though to a mac os server. FYI, sometimes the first connect fails (timeout) but the second connect always works and the first usually does but...
Here are some screen shots for you to download as it is easier to see what to allow for firewall configuration than describing it... This link has a series of screenshots that make it very clear..

  • Vanishing files Vectorworks 12 and Leopard Server 10.5.6

We have a Server installed with Leopard Server version 10.5.6 We are using Vectorworks 12.0.1 (CAD programme). When a user connected to the server working on a drawing goes to save the drawing it saves then displays an error message saying it cannot save. When you go to the directory where the file used to live it has vanished.
This problem does not happen all the time just when the machine feels like it.

The first thing you might want to try is patching VectorWorks to the last version of 12, which was 12.5.3. Since version 12 came out before Leopard, I know that Nemetschek had a number of problems that had to be patched. We had already upgraded to VW2008, so we didn't have to deal with any of that.

  • Time Machine and Leopard Server

I'm trying to verify the Time Machine works on Leopard Server sufficiently enough to be a reasonable backup vehicle for the Leopard Server to an external backup drive, for example.
I have read many posts where Leopard Server can act as a Time Machine Server for workstations, but my main interest is in using Time Machine, running on the Leopard Server to back up that Server.
My guess is that it will?
Thanks in advance for everyone's input.

Timemachine is not supported for "ADVANCED" Server set up but the SIMPLER setups YES. There are also settings for backing up network computers as well as backing up the server.
Supposed in Advanced not all system files are backed up. There are a number of threads regarding this in the Server section of the discussions.

  • Remote Desktop and Leopard Server VPN

We have remote users logging into our server via VPN PPTP, they login fine and get the relevent address's but once there we can't see or connect to the using ARD 3.2.2. We can control the Server over the internet but not over VPN any ideas greatly appreciated.

We have now got the situation that we can control the server over the VPN using screen sharing from another Leopard Mac but still can't control in the other direction.

  • WGM vs Server Admin and Leopard server access

I am able to access my Leopard xserve through my firewall using Server Admin tool, but not when I try with WGM.Message is..."host unknown" ...."host unreachable." What is the difference? Not a problem with ARD either ....mmmmm. Can someone shed some light on the experience? Thanks, J Langloi

By filtering, (if I may), he meant restricting. IE: If you're going to do this, you absolutely need to have the Firewall restrict what external IPs are allowed access, rather than making those ports wide open to anyone and everyone.
But, it's pretty much industry-standard/ standard-practice to disallow connections across a company firewall to internal servers, except via VPN. (And by this I am excluding servers that are intended to be public-facing but are still appropriately firewalled).
In rare cases where VPN is not a readily-available option, it is possible to connect to both Server Admin and Workgroup Manager over ssh, but I don't suggest going that route without absolutely securing ssh in every possible way (has minor typos I wish I could fix but nothing that confuses the vital info): http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7082312

  • Lion Preview and Textedit very slow when opening files from Leopard Server

My small office (about 10 users) recently upgraded our iMac's, Mac Mini's, and Macbook Pro's.  We are experiencing a big problem with Preview opening super slow (1-2 minutes) when trying to open JPG's, PDF's, etc from our 10.5.8 Leopard Server.  We have deleted numerous plist files related to Preview, completely deleted Preview.app from one iMac and reinstalled it via Pacifist and still no change in performance.  One of the new iMac's does open much faster than the others, but we cannot figure out why this one machine works well and the others don't.
All machines are showing the below error (dozens of times) in Console when trying to open files directly from the server...
    sandboxd:  ([###])  Preview(###) deny system-fsctl
We have searched the internet for a solution but have not come up with anything that works.  This problem exists with Textedit as well.  We did try opening a file from one Lion machine to the other and it opened very fast.  We also can open files very quickly from older 10.4.11 Tiger machines directly from the server.  So the best we can determine right now is Lion and Leopard Server are not playing nicely together.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have pasted (one of) the console log files below for reference.

"Enable Related Files" isn't the fix for this issue. It's slightly different - I wanted to still load related files, but only the ones local to the file I was editing.
The fix was to use DW's Resolve To IP Address feature. It required adding a registry value - it fixed the issue straight away

  • Does 10.6 provide a stable and robust server environment?

Or is it still as fragile as 10.4 and 10.5 requiring endless nights spent resolving DNS issues, Open Directory error messages, Portable home issues, inconsistencies with the operation of preferences under workgroup manager etc.... to name just a few of the endless issues I found over the last 3 years of working with Mac OS X Server 10.4 and 10.5.
The response of 'but if you know what you're doing' doesn't cut it. I shouldn't be able to break anything using the GUI administrator interface. It should prevent me from making the most obvious mistakes.
As you can tell, very reluctant to move server OS again. I'm very confident that I am one of many who feel the same way.
As much as I despise Windows OS, at-least there server OS was much more manageable and workable. (uck, can't believe I'm saying that).
What's the general opinion out there from people who've had trouble with their installations?

Time will tell as far as how robust Snow Leopard Server is.
We'll be experimenting with Snow Leopard Server 10.6.0 but likely won't put it into production use until 10.6.1 or 10.6.2 is released. Waiting a bit will mesh better with when we'll be ready to upgrade our clients, and should cause less headaches.
One thing I know *for certain* is that we won't be trying to upgrade our existing Leopard-based OD database. In addition to it having a few known corruptions, our experience with Tiger Server and Leopard Server is that Open Directory is quite fragile and corruption prone. We'll just experiment with upgrading our existing Leopard OD database to Snow Leopard, but plan to rekey a fresh OD database in Snow Leopard Server for the production cutover rather than tempt fate. We have less than a hundred user accounts so it shouldn't take too long to do so.
If Snow Leopard Server starts out with a clean OD database, doesn't corrupt and is rock-solid, that'd be great. However, given the history of Open Directory we're still expecting glitches.
The other problem areas we've encountered with Leopard Server relate to DHCP and DNS. As long as we let our router handle DHCP instead, and a little Tiger-based OS X Server we built handle our primary DNS, we're happy. If DNS works quite better in Snow Leopard Server I'll consider folding primary DNS back into Snow Leopard Server, but for now our workaround works quite stably.
Overall, when I consider the number of things that do work in Leopard Server vs. those that don't, I'm a happy camper. If the situation will be better with Snow Leopard Server, I'll be a very happy camper.

  • Upgrade price to Snow Leopard Server

I run a small business and I am going to buy an iMac as a server and Leopard Server to run for shared calendars and other network features. However, I know that Snow Leopard Server is on the horizon and I didn't see that Leopard had a special upgrade price from Tiger Server. Is this correct? When Leopard Server came out did everyone have to pony up the full price to upgrade?

Only once have I been able to get a reduced price on a server OS upgrade. We purchased 10.2 server within 30 to 60 days of the 10.3 date. Apple had a program that if you could provide proof of purchase within the time frame you could get a set of media for 10.3.
No new serials were required as 10.2 server and 10.3 server used the same.
Apple occasionally will do the same for the client software.
Other than that, everyone is expected to pony up full price.
Now don't get me started on the whole "nothing but 10 users or unlimited client" price structure.

  • Unable to access gateway and DNS via VPN (L2TP) with Snow Leopard Server

    Summary:
After rebooting my VPN server, i am able to establish a VPN (L2TP) connection from outside my private network. I am able to connect (ping, SSH, …) the gateway only until the first client disconnects. Then i can perfectly access all the other computers of the private network, but i cannot access the private IP address of the gateway.
Additionally, during my first VPN connection, my DNS server, which is on the same server, is not working properly with VPN. I can access it with the public IP address of my gateway. I can access it from inside my private network. A port scan indicates me that the port 53 is open, but a dig returns me a timeout.
    Configuration:
    Cluster of 19 Xserve3.1 - Snow Leopard Server 10.6.2
Private network 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 -> domain name: cluster
-> 1 controller, which act as a gateway for the cluster private network, with the following services activated:
DHCP, DNS, firewall (allowing all incoming traffic for each groups for test purposes), NAT, VPN, OpenDirectory, web, software update, AFP, NFS and Xgrid controller.
    en0: fixed public IP address -> controller.example.com
    en1: 192.168.1.254 -> controller.cluster
-> 18 agents with AFP and Xgrid agent activated:
    en1: 192.168.1.x -> nodex.cluster with x between 1 and 18
VPN (L2TP) server distributes IP addresses between 192.168.1.201 and 192.168.1.210 (-> vpn1.cluster to vpn10.cluster). Client informations contain the private network DNS server informations (192.168.1.254, search domain: cluster).
    _*Detailed problem description:*_
After rebooting the Xserve, my VPN server works fine except for the DNS. My client receives the correct informations:
    Configure IPv4: Using PPP
    IPv4 address: 192.168.1.201
    Subnet Mask:
    Router: 192.168.1.254
    DNS: 192.168.1.254
    Search domain: cluster
From my VPN client, i can ping all the Xserve of my cluster (192.168.1.1 to 18 and 192.168.1.254). If i have a look in Server Admin > Settings > Network, i have three interfaces listed: en0, en1 and ppp0 of family IPv4 with address 192.168.1.254 and DNS name controller.cluster.
The DNS server returns me timeouts when i try to do a dig from my VPN client even if i am able to access it directly from a computer inside or outside my private network.
After i disconnect, i can see in Server Admin that the IP address of my ppp0 interface has switch to my public IP address.
Then i can always establish a VPN (L2TP) connection, but the client receives the following informations:
    Configure IPv4: Using PPP
    IPv4 address: 192.168.1.202
    Subnet Mask:
Router: (Public IP address of my VPN server)
    DNS: 192.168.1.254
    Search domain: cluster
From my VPN client, i can access all the other computers of my network (192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.18) but when i ping my gateway (192.168.1.254), it returns me timeouts.
I have two "lazy" solutions to this problem: 1) Configure VPN and DNS servers on two differents Xserve, 2) Put the public IP address of my gateway as DNS server address, but none of these solutions are acceptable for me…
    Any help is welcome!!!

I would suggest taking a look at:
    server admin:vpn:settings:client information:network route definitions.
as I understand your setup it should be something like
    192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0 private.
at least as a start. I just got done troubleshooting a similar issue but via two subnets:

  • I transferred files from a NAS server to the Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server and now some of the files have Custom Access and can't  be opened by some users.  How do I fix this?

We're setting up our Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server, and in the process transferred files that had been stored and accessed from our Blackarmor NAS server over to the Mac.  These files were all created on PC's and are Office Excel files, WordPerfect files or PDF's.  When you look at the files on the Mac from the Mac and bring up Get Info for the affected file, it says that the file has Custom Access.  The files that work properly don't have that configuration.  I can access and open the files on some computers, but some users can't open the files from their computer even though they can see it.  We're all using PC's and they get the Error:  Access Denied-Contact your administrator--or something similar.  I've seen on the web similar issues and it may have something to do with ACL permissions.  I don't know enough about Mac OS to understand this, but what is baffling is that they can be opened from some PC's but not others, and all of the Users have the same accessibility to the files.  Thanks for a solution!!

Oh, on the losing Internet, try this...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
PS. Your English is quite good & completely understandable.

  • Remote Desktop and Snow Leopard Server

What is the best way to use Remote Desktop with Snow Leopard Server?
I purchased a mac mini with snow leopard server and Remote desktop so I can easily manage my 11 computers, install and upgrade software etc. etc.
The mac mini server will basically be nothing but a server.
I will use as my main computer a mac pro. Do I need to install Remote Desktop on the server and on my mac pro? What is the best way to deploy the services of Remote desktop and mac os x server?

You install Apple Remote Desktop on the machine you want to control from. In this case, install on your Mac Pro. All you have to do on the clients (controlled Macs) is enable remote management in the System Preferences under Sharing. Just make sure that all your controlled Macs are up to date on their ARD version (v3.3.2) which can be taken care of from Software Update.

Entrant, authorizing "Relayer outgoing mail over the host:
    Smtp.orange.fr "
At the tab relay, we leave the config classic 127.0.0.0 / 8
    And 192.168.1.0/24.
In the history of mail, there are "postfix / postfix-7563]: fatal: the
Postfix mail system is not running, why then that the service operates on
    Priori!
How can I be able to send emails to the outside knowing that we
    Use addresses' [email protected]. "
Please tell us a direction to follow or procedure.

Notre configuration : Mac OS X SERVER 5.2 - LEOPARD SERVER
    PowerPC G5
Postfix mail system is not running", pourquoi alors que le service fonctionne à
    priori !
Comment faire pour pouvoir envoyer nos emails à l'extérieur sachant que nous
    utilisons les adresses "[email protected]".
Merci de nous indiquer une direction à suivre ou une procédure.
    Cordialement,
