Xgrid Controller Unavailable

Podcast Producer and Xgrid live on the same box here and prior to Snow Leopard there was no trouble getting Podcast Producer connected to Xgrid. The server is connected to Active Directory, DNS responds correctly, user authentication is working fine, but it will not connect to Xgrid. I can connect to Xgrid with the Xgrid Admin tool using password authentication however.
Kerberos is functioning, but I would prefer to use a local user, not a domain user to run Xgrid tasks, but "Xgrid Controller service is unavailable on mymachine.mydomain.edu" no matter what I set Xgrid User Name and Xgrid User Password to, even when Xgrid is set to password authentication.
Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.
-James

Thanks David, that pointed me in the right direction at least.
Since it is somewhat complicated to get such an account created for our Active Directory as it is not directly managed by our department, I decided to disconnect from AD and run open directory standalone. Now it all authenticates correctly via kerberos locally, although I still need to resolve other mysterious issues as to why Xgrid is failing about 3/4 through the tasks I submit.

  • Can Xgrid controller and agent run on the same controller?

I am trying to setup an Xgrid on 2 Mac OS X Leopard computers. My intention was setting up one computer as a controller/agent and other computer as an agent so that I can have a grid with 2 agents running on different computers. I setup my grid with xgridctl and using Xgrid Admin, I am able to view the grid on a GUI program. In Xgrid Admin, I also see 2 computers (One is local, other one is remote computer) listed with their IP addresses. Only the remote computer's status is "Available". Local computer's status is "Unavailable".
I was about to conclude that you can not have controller and agent on the same computer but I decided to shoot an email to apple mailing list and expect some clarification.
Thanks in advance for the support,
    Umut Tezduyar

Are you sure you have mentioned the servlet in the web.xml file.
This web.xml file lets Tomcat know which servlets exist and where to look for it.
So, you should have the following tags in the web.xml file of your web application.
    <servlet>
    <servlet-name>MopoController</servlet-name>
    <servlet-class>org.gertcuppens.controller.MopoController</servlet-class>

  • Xgrid server admin controller tab won't create password entries for client and agent authentication.

I am trying to set up password-based access for my OSX Server 10.7.3 running on a mac mini.  When I try to enter passwords into the Client Authentication and Agent Authentication fields from the Controller tab and click Save, the fields empty out.  When I then try to start the Xgrid service, it fails with an error in the log file controller missing password file "/etc/xgrid/controller/agent-password".  Can someone help?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Thanks for the pointer to createhomedir - that did indeed do the trick. (How on earth do people find these little nuggets).
I hesitate to mark this as solved however - it's a functioning workaround, but does nothing to explain why on earth the GUI suddenly stopped functioning.
But in the (likely) event that that question never gets answered, thanks again for letting me get on with working!

  • Xgrid admin not recognising controller

    Hi guys
I've recently upgraded to Snow Leopard (client not server, but thought best to post here anyway) and installed the updated server admin tools since the Leopard Xgrid admin I had was removed by the Snow Leopard installer. The new xgrid admin allows me to add the xgrid controller and password (and even gives an authentication failed message if I put the password in wrong) but shows the number of agents as 0 and lists no jobs. However, the command line xgrid stuff works perfectly - I can submit and retrieve jobs and use xgrid -job list as before. I didn't encounter any problems using the old version of xgrid admin. Anyone got any ideas for how to fix it?
Thanks a lot for any help,
    Matthew Denwood

    Oh no!
I think I have the very same problem.
I have a Dual G5 with 10.5.8 I'm using as my controller with XGrid Admin.
I'm able to add the G5 itself as an agent to its own controller.
I also have a Macbook Air (original) running SL 10.6.1.
I opened port 4111 on the controller.
When I run "xgridagentd" on the Macbook Air agent, it spits out a list of commands indicated that it has connected to the controller successfully. "xgrid a status" gives "running/enabled".
But alas, on the G5, in Xgrid Admin, I don't see the new agent.
Am I out of luck for now? Good shot of having this work if I go back to Leopard on the Air?
    THanks!

  • PcP2 and Xgrid

    Hi,
Do you know how to configure xgrid controller for it sending an email to a change of status of a job.
    Formerly (10.5) xgrid did that.
I know that we can specify an option '-mail' at the launch of a job but I would like xgrid send this from all jobs. This will need to specify an email address in the configuration of xgrid controller I presume!
    Thank you

The property "Administrator Short Name" in PcP configuration is used to get xgrid notification email.
    - so set "Administrator Short Name" to "pcpadmin" (or whatever user you use)
    - set pcpadmin's email to [email protected] in "Workgroup Manager" [1]
    this can be done with:
sudo pcastconfig --add_property 'Administrator Short Name' --value pcpadmin
dscl -u diradmin /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 -create /Users/pcpadmin mail '[email protected]'

  • Why won't 'xgrid -grid list' work

I'm running OS X 10.4.9 on an Intel Mac. I have the XGrid controller turned on, and the agent turned on. When I try to list my grid, using the command line, as so:
    xgrid -grid list
I get the 'usage' response as if I've typed something wrong. But the usage gives above as a valid option, so not sure what is going on.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks.
PS: here is what I get when I do an 'xgridctl status':
    17793 ?? Ss 0:02.86 xgridagentd
    17828 ?? Ss 0:02.57 xgridcontrollerd

    Try using:
    xgrid -h 127.0.0.1 -grid list
where 127.0.0.1 is the IP address or domain name of the computer you want to connect to; leaving the command as is will connect to the computer you're using.

  • Xgrid for gzipping large files?

Hi there. I'm totally new to Xgrid, and I'm wondering if it can take a load off of my servers. Currently my users are pushing large datasets (50GB-2TB, typically segmented into 2GB files) to a sharepint, then gzipping to a single file via ssh. I'd love to off-load this chore to a grid...either on a scheduled/automated basis, or via a trigger of some sort when the user is ready. I've looked over some of the info that's available online, and I'm afraid I haven't been able to figure out if this is even possible, and if so, how to go about the implementing such a system. We have loads of systems with spare cycles that I'd love to leverage if possible. Thanks for any input or direction... chris

I'm running an Xgrid, but not (yet) developing software for it. (We're using it for medial imaging.)
Xgrid works best for stuff that can be split into small junks. So if you regard your 2GB files as "small junks" of a larger dataset you could distribute those junks to have your clients compress on junk each and hence speed up the whole process in total.
So your Xgrid Controller would have to send the junks for processing to your agents and receive the results (gzipped file).
Regarding the size of your datasets this would probably wreak havoc to your network.
    Just out of curiosity:
If you may disclose details, what are your datasets about?

  • Xgrid & Blender

I've been asked to "create" a Render Farm to be used with Blender, so the students renders don't take so long.
I've read through the the Xgrid info from Apple and everything seems to make scene but I can't figure out how to get Blender to Use xgrid for rendering.
Has anyone ever tried anything like this??

Greetings all, I'm working on distributing blender rendering with xgrid, too, but I'm in dire need of useful, timely documentation. The atpm.org tutorial (http://www.atpm.com/10.06/blender.shtml) is outdated as of OSX 10.4. I've tried GridStuffer and it's a bit of a headtrip to make sense of the documentation there.
I'd like to just get blender to work once via the xgrid command. Here's what I've done to date:
xgrid controller running on OS X Server 10.4.4 -- The controller is receiving jobs.
xgrid agents running on a lab of G5 iMacs running OS X 10.4.6 -- all agents show up as available in XGrid Admin.
xgrid host and password environment variables set.
I have blender 2.41 on a G5 iMac on my desk. I can successfully render a frame from a .blend file via the command line:
    blender -b /Users/lab_user/Desktop/blender-xgrid/Bionicle2Anim.blend -f 1
This is what I've tried as far as using xgrid:
    xgrid -job run -in /Users/lab_user/Desktop/blender-xgrid/ -out /Users/its/Desktop/xgrid-out/ blender -b /Users/lab_user/Desktop/blender-xgrid/Bionicle2Anim.blend -f 1
The controller shows something running, but then it stops real quickly and there is no output on the blender-xgrid directory.
Any tips? Like I said, the bulk of usable documentation seems to be for the pre 1.0 version of xgrid. Google "xgrid blender" and you'll see what I mean. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Podcast Creator2 + Xgrid + Kerberos + other Macs

I can now easily create podcasts exactly as I want them, but I'm just using the same Mac Pro for everything. I've got a handful of Mac minis and iMacs (all Intel) that sit idle all night and would like to use them via Xgrid to speed up processing. All of these other Macs are stand-alone machines. Logins are local, but I have an administrator account on all of them. I've never used network logins (and don't want to), but it seems that Podcast Producer wants to use Kerberos for authentication. I've read Help files, Server manuals, and searched the discussions, but I can't find a clear description anywhere on how to set up a Kerberos login from a stand-alone machine to authenticate to a SL server so it can be an Xgrid agent for Podcast Creator 2.
    Can anyone help?
    thanks in advance

If only it were that easy, I would have it working.
All my machines are bound to the OD. All services work except Xgrid agents.
If I remove the Kerberos requirement for Xgrid agents, then the Xgrid controller has all the agents, but the podcast jobs fail because the user they run as is "nobody".
    I found a doc (XgrinAdmin_and_HPCv10.6.pdf):
    {quote}
    The agent’s principal is created in the Kerberos domain controller and is put in the agent’s keytab if the agent computer is bound to the OD master using _AUTHENTICATED BINDING_ with Directory access. Otherwise, you must use kadmin to create the principal in the Kerberos domain controller and export it to the keytab.{quote}
I have not had the time yet to figure out how to create the agents principle and etc.
Actually, I now have time..... looks like 'add_principle' might be the ticket, and I might try to add a 'host/' type principle. Not sure about the export/import. Wish me luck....

  • Xgrid Step-by-Step (Tutorial) Writer Wanted + Xgrid observations

I would like to hire a graduate student for about 5 hours (@ $50/h) to write a step-by-step guide to setting up an Xgrid 2 installation how we need it. I would like this guide to be posted for public consumption (presumably at macresearch.org). although Charles Parnot has written some nice guides, it does not cover entirely what we need. it needs to be foolproof and cover EVERY step. specificallly, we need our setup as follows:
    * Desktop OSX only. We have no OSX server to play controller. One OSX Desktop will play controller (in addition to being client and agent, too).
    * we need to name our allowed controller (e.g., biology-brown).
    * we need instructions for owners to add their machine anywhere on the net [i.e., not local] w/o Kerberos but with password authentication to this specific controller; and instructions on how the controller interacts with them.
    * we need instructions for the same owners on how to submit their own jobs.
    * most important, while the above could probably be figured out by ourselves, we need to add specific applications (such as R and stata, which live in /Applications/* on each machine in the grid) to the sandbox.
    * sample programs (maybe just some perl programs that sleep for random times).
if anyone from apple reads this: Xgrid 2 can sell Mac Pros. It is a mystery to me why the docs are not better and easier.
    * why does the Apple guide does not have more such step-by-step guides for installations without an OSX Server? w/o charles parnot's guide, we would have been totally dead in the water.
    * why is ssh authentication not an option? that is, we would have liked each computer to have an xgrid account, and set it up so that the xgrid controller can log into them w/o password and then submit jobs as user "xgrid". in our network, we do have some trust for those who can authenticate into the network.
    * MOST IMPORTANT: the policies of "only when idle" or "always" for agents accepting jobs are not sufficent. we have Mac Pros with 8 to 16 cores (or pseudo-cores). during the day, a user should be able to allow up to X cores be taken over by Xgrid. This way, our 16-core machines could allow 12 cores to be used by Xgrid at all times, and the remaining 4 cores to be used only when idle.
if this were a policy option, then we could subsidize our faculty's purchases of Mac Pros if they were willing to dedicate all but 4 of their cores to the Xgrid.
Xgrid seems like a great product, but it almost seems neglected by tech support (though not by marketing).
    /iaw

I've had to setup Xgrid in our university biology lab, but I did it with OS X Server, so I can't really help you out. However I can answer some of your questions and give you some feedback on my experience.
    1. Submitting jobs: You can either do this through the Terminal using the xgrid command or you can download GridStuffer: http://cmgm.stanford.edu/~cparnot/xgrid-stanford/html/goodies/GridStuffer-info.h tml I suggest playing with GridStuffer as it's a little more intuitive. Also, you're probably going to want to send jobs as batches and not as single jobs.
    2. ssh authenticaton. No idea why this isn't an option. I've used both the Kerberos and regular password authentication with no problems.
    3. Idle or Always: This is something that Apple has to answer, and yes, we've asked ourselves this question before. Although the lab is equipped with Mac Pros, many lab members prefer to use Idle which of course reduces the grid's usefulness.
    4. Tech support: I've had one instance where a specific job would crash the controller. I called Apple tech support who escalated it to engineering, who in turn reported that since a certain number of jobs would pass, there was no problem with Xgrid. This wasn't a satisfying answer and we ended up using a different cluster to process those jobs.
    5. I've had an instance where the controller crashed and all the clients had their Xgrid sharing box automatically unchecked. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be normal behavior but it seems odd that the agent would turn itself off because it couldn't find the controller.
That's my experience with setting up and using Xgrid, but don't let that deter you. I'm aware that others have had successful implementations that work.

  • Xgrid and Leopard Server

Is Leopard Server required on the Xgrid controller or can the controller be running Leopard client?

  • 10.5.6 Broke Podcast Producer

    Hello,
I set up a Podcast Producer Server in 10.5.5 using the install instructions. I did not set up DNS and mail as they are housed on different boxes. Everything worked as expected. I even bound the server to our other ODM and was able to add our users to the Podcast group. Everything looked great and then I said okay to installing 10.5.6 - especially since it addresses some issues with Wikis, Blogs, and iTunes. Now Podcast Producer doesn't work. The Podcast Producer overview says that the Xgrid controller is unavailable. The Xgrid system log says that the connection to the controller was closed and that it could not connect for reasons unknown.
Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Eric

I agree with GemsBok; there are a dozen spots where the host name is stored and if one is off, services can run a muck. I had an issue with PCP and XGrid controllers and ended up completely wiping the system out and rebuilding from scratch. My suspicion was a DNS and hostname mismatch, but never could quite sort it out. After rebuilding, everything worked good. You may want to try demoting from Open Directory Master to Standalone, then promote back to ODM. Sometimes that fixes any kerberos problems you may be having.

  • Mac Pro turns itself on every day at the same time

My Mac Pro suddenly decided to start turning itself on every day at 6:00:12pm local time (12:00:12AM GMT). It turns on at exactly 12 seconds after 6:00pm every day.
I recently upgraded to OSX 10.5 and installed the point update. It did it before the point update and continues to after the point update.
I have had it since April and it has never done this before. It did NOT do this under 10.4.
I have the options in system settings to NOT wake on LAN event and NOT restart after power failure. It is NOT set to automatically turn on but it is set to automatically turn itself off at 1:00am.
These settings have not changed since 10.4 and I have verified them. No other software has recently been installed since the update to 10.5. I did update the Wacom driver to the new Leopard driver. That is all. I have the Wacom tablet unplugged from the computer.
    Any ideas?

Updates installed by Software Update are "delta" updates - they go from 10.x.y to 10.x.y+1, and are customized for a particular Mac model. It appears that in this case they also patch some files instead of replacing them fully. The "combo" update will update 10.x.anything to the latest 10.x.y, it'll update any Mac model, and in this case it appears they contain full files instead of patches. The delta updater for 10.5.1 is about 39 MB; the combo updater is about 110 MB. You can download the combo updater from the Support site. Sites such as www.macfixit.com often recommend installing the combo updater instead of, or after, the delta updater, as it often solves mysterious problems. One specific example is the numerous "SUID" messages when doing a "repair permissions" - the combo update gets rid of all but one, and that one is specifically stated by Apple to be okay. Of course, no guarantees, but the combo updater is a reasonable thing to try.

  • Admin User account deleted by MCXCDeleteAccount at shutdown

I have a MacBook Pro that occasionally on shutdown deletes the User Account with admin privileges when I shutdown. The home directory is not deleted, only the account information. The system log segment has the following entries. Any clues to why this would be happening, or how I can stop it from happening again:

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
This is a real puzzle - there have been a number of related reports recently:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2675891
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2684412
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12731083
    Your log includes:
    1/24/11 6:04:14 PM ManagedClient818 -xaDiskDisappeared: removing
external account "alan" with home "/Users/alan" from DSLocal because disk
    disappeared.
Is "alan" your regular user account? If so, is it supposed to be local to your HD? (the log report calls it "external account 'alan'")
There have been suggestions in the other threads that the trigger for the inappropriate account destruction by the system might involve the unexpected disconnection of an external USB drive. The situation isn't at all clear, though.
