Xgrid Job fails on Podcast Producer

Hi all. This is on a fresh install of Server 10.6 with all updates to 10.6.2, repaired permissions, rebooted, etc. I enabled Podcast Producer using its Setup Assistant. Created a test user, and Podcast Capture worked fine on uploading to their podcast, using the default Single Source with small movies. Uploaded 4 episodes. Then, all of a sudden, it stopped working, and I get this
=============================================================
Thu Dec 10 11:34:48 -0500 2009 -- Xgrid Job: 14 is Running
Thu Dec 10 11:34:53 -0500 2009 -- Xgrid Job: 14 is Failed
This is using both the Podcast Capture app or the web based Capture app, on the server or from other computers. In the error log I get this:
/System/Library/Frameworks/Ruby.framework/Versions/1.8/usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gem s/mongrel-1.1.5/bin/../lib/mongrel.rb:285:in `run': Ruby threads cannot be used in RubyCocoa without patches to the Ruby interpreter
Is this relevant? Already erased drive and reinstalled everything twice, on this Mac Pro, 2.8 GHz Quad Core Xenon.
Where to look and what to fix? Appreciate any feedback.

Here is the full Podcast Producer Server Log, if anyone can see the problem and how to fix it....

  • Podcast Producer and Xgrid setup - Jobs don't run

I've successfully setup an xserve here to be part of an OD setup, setup xgrid which is running successfully, and have Podcast Producer up and running and successfully running on the xgrid. However, when i open up podcast producer and go through the workflow process and submit, nothing happens except for temp folders stacking up in the podcast recording directory.
Only thing I could find was this error in the podcast producer logs:
Sat Nov 03 00:07:37 -0400 2007 -- Unknown exception while kicking off xgrid jobs: Fail to set key base: Base directory in /Volumes/Puma/Publisher/Podcast/Recordings/32E631A1-0B26-495B-B363-66FDDDDB233B /properties.plist

Not sure if this will fix your problem, but I was having the same problem until I looked at the specs for XGrid, it has to run on an Intel Mac. This is where you can get the specs:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306737
Here is what is in the doc:
    Podcast Capture requirements
Any Mac running Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
iSight camera (built-in or external) or FireWire DV camcorder
    Podcast Producer Server requirements
Any Mac running Mac OS X Server version 10.5 Leopard
Xsan for optional cluster file services
    Podcast Producer Xgrid rendering requirements
Any Intel-based Macintosh Server or Intel-based desktop Mac (a Mac Pro, for example)
Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard or Mac OS X Server version 10.5 Leopard
At least 1 GB of memory (RAM) plus 512 MB of additional RAM per processor core
At least 50 GB of available disk space
Xsan for optional cluster file services
    Quartz Extreme-enabled video chipset
Note: Quartz Extreme support can be verified in the Graphics section of Apple System Profiler.
Note: If a system is providing multiple Podcast services (for example, Podcast Producer and Podcast Producer Xgrid rendering), the system needs to meet both requirements.

  • Podcast Producer 2, Jobs Failing

We are in the process of setting up our xserve for podcast producer, but I am running into an issue.
When I submit a podcast, the job shows up in Xgrid Admin but then fails shortly after. When I look at the individual job log, it fails on the same task each time:
task "import-plugin-movie-generated" state change to "Failed"
task "publish-plugin-movie-generated" state changed to "Failed"
When I go to Server Admin>Podcast Producer>Logs>Podcast Producer Server Error Log I get the following error.
/usr/share/podcastproducer/pcastserd/lib/watcher/watcher/watcher.rb:#in 'start' :Ruby threads cannot be used in RubyCocoa without patches to the Ruby interpreter
Please let me know if you have any suggestions, as I can't find really anything about this error online or in any other documentation.

This group is usually reserved for issues specific to the Xserve itself and you are more likely to get an answer - or at least get more experienced eyes on your problem in a more appropriate group. Like the Podcast Producer discussion group:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1355
A very technical discussion of this issue - or at least a very similar one is here at StackOverFlow:

  • All Podcast Producer Jobs Failing After Snow Leopard Upgrade

First, and most importantly, all Podcast Producer submissions are failing after upgrading to Snow Leopard. These seem to fail in the mail stage.
I have a second problem that makes this worse: When I enter Server Admin -> Podcast Producer -> Settings -> Properties, I can not see any properties. I know that these settings are somewhere, since when I open the XML file in <Shared File System>/Server/Jobs, the resulting file has information that should be here, however some of it is incorrect. I'm not sure what got changed, since I can't see all of the properties in the PP panel in Server Admin.
Thirdly, I can see no Workflows available in Podcast Producer, even the new ones that are supposed to be available in Snow Leopard.
So, I would at least like submissions to actually not fail, which was not the case before the upgrade. I would also like access to all of the properties and workflows available in the Podcast Producer administration part of Server Admin.
Has anybody else experienced this? Is there a way to fix this?

After installing SL, i cannot get wellsfargo "account login" to work for any account of mine, other financial secure sites work fine, i.e. fidelity or vanguard, I can access the main screen of wellsfargo but login fails ... screen i get says Safari can't connect to the server and as follows: "Safari can’t open the page “https://online.wellsfargo.com/das/cgi-bin/session.cgi?" plus some more gibberish stuff.... i tried switching to firefox and it works fine .... never had any trouble before ..... tried safari reset, safari empty cache, and maintenace that applied ...... still no luck!! hope they get this bug fixed , my other computer an older mac mini works fine. any help????? never had any problem before SL

  • PcP2 suddenly dies, can't delete failed Xgrid jobs

    Hi,
I have an XServe running 10.6.7 with Podcast Producer and XGrid set up and, until lately, working.
A user submitted a job via Podcast Transfer and the job died about 85% through the job. All jobs after that fail almost immediately. I see the six last jobs in the XGrid Admin (three from a while back that submitted successfully, the bad job, and two tests since then). I can't delete any of the jobs in the XGrid Admin.
I have restarted the services, the server, mucked about in the sqlite database, but with no luck.
Any ideas how to clean this stuff out?
    Thanks,
    Miles

To add to this, I can run the Mandelbrot tool and see the jobs being processed by the XGrid, but anything new from PcP fails.

  • When Podcast Producer says it's running but isn't (apache fails to start)

We've set up a new Intel XServe up with Leopard Server (10.5.6) and are having trouble persuading the Podcast Producer engine from starting.
First, we've set up all the accounts and settings exactly per Apple's PP documentation. Yes, I'm aware of the need to significantly tweak the defaults and that you don't just click "start" We have a fully functioning OD Master on this machine, plus DNS, Kerberos, XGrid, QTSS and our regular web services (on port 80) via Apache.
We try to start the Podcast Producer in Server Admin. The dot goes green, indicating that the service is running. However, no one can connect to it using the Podcast Capture application (and yes, users attempting that are clients of the OD Master).
The logs show what's not happening, but not why:
The pcastserverd_out.log shows many repetitive instances of:
    Thu Jan 22 16:27:33 +1100 2009 -- Starting pcastserverd apache...
pcastserverd_error.log shows many repeated instances of:
Unexpected exception in check: Failed system command: /usr/sbin/httpd -f /usr/share/podcastproducer/apache/httpd.conf -k start (256)
    and, less often:
Unexpected exception starting mongrel instance: Failed system command: /usr/sbin/httpd -f /usr/share/podcastproducer/apache/httpd.conf -k start (256)
I have traced this error to the execution of a ruby file:
    /usr/share/podcastproducer/pcastserverd/lib/pcast_server.rb
where there is a routine that obviously attempts to check "mongrel and apache" for something. Here's the routine:
    def check
    ASLLogger.debug("Checking mongrel and apache...")
    begin
    if (!check_apache)
    start_apache
    end
    if (ServerPreferences.mode == "main")
    @mongrelbase_port.upto(@mongrel_baseport + @num_mongrels - 1) do |portnum|
    start_mongrel(portnum)
    end
    end
    rescue Exception => boom
ASLLogger.error "Unexpected exception in check: #{boom}"
    end
    end
Here's the question: how do I further trace this fault to work out what's going on and how to fix it? Why does SA insist the PP engine is running when evidently it isn't? Why won't this instance of Apache launch properly?
I am assuming that the PP invoked instances of Apache and it's "mongrels" (whatever they are) are using SSL on ports in the 8xxx range, and that these are entirely unrelated to the web services I've already set up for webmail, wikis and blogs elsewhere in SA.
    Your advice is appreciated.

When you are charging what are you plugged into?
You should plug the nano either into a power brick or directly into the back of your computer. Do not use USB hubs, or the USB ports on the front of the computer at first. Just confirm you can get a full charge on the USB connection at the back or from the power brick.

  • Podcast Producer Youtube workflow fails. Script produces runtime errors

A guide was written regarding creating a Podcast Producer workflow for YouTube. Unfortunately, the completed script (even with all of the relevant API bits installed properly) returns an exception when trying to upload the video (client ID, data API have been substituted into the script). The Java script compiles and runs. However, when it failed, I decided to toString() the exception which was called and found out that Google was returning "Bad Request," meaning something with the way the Script was trying to talk to Google was bad. The code is still the reference code with the CID/DevKey subbed in, but because of the Bad Request exception passed by Google, it fails to upload, and thus, fails entirely.
Is there a proper working YouTube workflow anywhere?

Apologies: I just found the Podcast Producer forum, so I'm going to mark this one as answered and repost the question in the Podcast Producer forum now that I know a specific forum for it exists.

  • Podcast producer without Xgrid

Hello - does anyone know if there's a way to run Podcast Producer without Xgrid? I won't be needing the distributed processing that Xgrid provides. I'm currently trying to configure this software on a corporate intranet where I may not get the permissions (reverse DNS, active directory records) to make Xgrid happy. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'll give this a shot. Thanks!

  • Xgrid agents fail Maya rendering jobs

    Hello,
We are a college and have setup an xGrid for students to submit Autodesk Maya 2008
rendering jobs to the xGrid for processing Maya .mb animation projects.
Our xGrid runs perfectly we can submit simple jobs and it works perfectly.
We are using the GUI Xgrid Feeder Sample app included in the Xcode SDK to submit jobs using a Autodesk Maya command called "Render" (plus some options for the command added using the Feeder app GUI)
Xgrid is correctly feeding the agents, but all the agents immediately fail the jobs. I have included the xGrid console output for one of the agents below:
The first job fails (maya command)
The second one works (simple bash command)

Does anyone have any idea why the maya jobs are failing?
Could it be permissions problems for the nobody user, and how would I change those?
    Cheers

Are you using an AFP, SMB, or NFS network share? Logged on as which user?
I've had good success with AFP shares logged in as the local admin, and using RUSH for maya rendering (set to render as local admin). NFS should work better for permissions if you need to render as different users.

  • Podcast producer ethernet address

Hi there trying to get podcast producer to work, it runs jobs in xgrid until about 90% then fails when it is trying to post to blogg i noticed that the mac address in my workgroup manager is giving the the WAN port address and not the LAN address i would have thought it needed as i'm running a NAT network. Just wondered is this important? Also what user should you run jobs as? On the BLOGG it says their is a student group but when i go to it, it says 404 no group is hosted on this server????
    Any ideas?

it turned out to be a problem with not binding the cameras or having mail service started and was running xgrid as the wrong user, i had to use pcastadmin

  • Podcast producer problem

Hi i wonder if someone can help me i have a problem with podcast producer in that it seems to work fine until it tries to post something to the group blog. At least that's where it says it fails in xgrid admin. Also it appears that there is no group blog how do i create it?

needed email service running and had wrong user running xgrid jobs needed to be pcastadmin, also needed to change server.pcast.private/groups/podcast to my own server name, dohhhh!

  • Xgird Admin Jobs Failing

I have been working to get my podcast producer and podcast captures working properly.
Now when I submit the files get submitted, they then show up in the JOBS tab of Xgrid Admin and they start and then FAIL... everything I have set up seems to be working except the xgrid.
When I look at the Xgrid Overview I see all my agents but 0 working processors it shows my available processors and 0 unavailable but the Xgrid CPU power is at 0GHz
Does anyone know how to get this resolved
    I am really stumped..
    thanks much for your help

I am having the same issue. In the Diagnostic reports I find this:
Tue Feb 16 10:17:55 *myhostname* pcastaction[1230] <Critical>: You do not the correct permissions for this action.
This was working fine yesterday, then I accidentally removed the server from the Xgrid agent list when I was trying to configure an additional agent. To get the server back as an Xgrid agent I re-configured xgrid. The server is now an Xgrid agent again, but there seems to be an issue with the permissions. Any suggestions?

  • Restarting Suspended Xgrid Jobs

    Hello,
I had some problems with Podcast producer on 10.7  My Xgrid had a problem which caused jobs 16 to 28 to be in a suspended status.  Since I've corrected the problem jobs 29 to 32 have processed.
My question: How do I get Xgrid to do jobs 16 to 28?  I see that they are suspended.  I tried the terminal mehtod of xgrid -run -id 16  but got no results.
How can I rerun jobs 16 to 28?
    Thanks a lot!

  • SMTP Settings for Podcast Producer

Recently our University changed email providers, which required us to change settings on our devices.  I updated the SMTP settings in Podcast Producer to reflect the new service, however I am no longer receiving the administrator emails whenever XGrid starts or starts a job.
Here's the rub... the user notification emails are working fine using the same SMTP settings.  Is there somewhere else that SMTP settings are stored in Podcast Producer that I missed?  I am able to ping the SMTP server fine with no problems.

  • Compressor 4, Podcast Producer 2 and distributed encoding

    Hey there,
I am quiete new to Podcast Producer and Compressor. I found in the documentation of Podcast Producer that it is possible to create new encoding types for the Podcast Producer export media type. However it did not say when I create such a new export type if the export is automatically send to Compressor when it is performing the encoding inside the Podcast Producer Workflow. As far as I know PP2 normally only supports XGrid. Now I was wondering if I can send the encoding job to Compressor in order to make use of the distributed encoding capability of Compressor withing the PP2 Workflow. Did anybody try that out yet? I would appreciate any comment or hints that could help me.
Thanks in advance and happy belated new year

Hi Robert, righto cheers. I did spec in Final Cut Server just in case as i guessed as much. I've used episode before but it used it's own binary to encode the podcasts. Now it uses Compressor instead somehow apparently for rendering under 10.6.. Well we'll see how it goes.
    cheers, Dave
