Xgrid with Pc's?

Is it possable to hook up Pc's on my gigabit network? I have got 5 PC's and would love to hook them up for some video encoding. Thanks!

The software linked to is a Java program which can accept incoming Xgrid requests, and execute them regardless of what platform it is running on; Java is a crossplatform environment.

  • Xgrid with Compressor?

Anyone know if one can use Xgrid with Compressor? Seems a logical benefit, but I don't see any info on it.
    Joe

As far as I know, Apple has two distributed processing mechanisms. The Qmaster one that ships with FCP/Compressor must be configured with the slave machines on the same subnet as the controller. (I've not set this up, but found that restriction in the docs).
It would seem that Xgrid is the perfect product to use for large, distributed TV rendering with Compressor. But neither product seems to know about the other.
I've got 20 Xgrid agents (on various remote subnets) ready to go rendering broadcast TV recordings. So now I'm faced with the choice of using Compressor or Xgrid, not both. But there's so much transcoding to do, I'll probably have to go with Xgrid and something like mencoder or VLC.
If anyone knows if Compressor/Xgrid integration is on the horizon soon please say - It'll save me alot of development.

  • Xgrid with Final Cut?

We're trying to use Xgrid to speed encoding of videos. Has anyone tried this?
    Joe

You can use QMaster with Compressor (and that implies Batch Render or Batch Export) but the current rev of FCP is not capable of talking to a farm. A quick search for XGRID turned up tons of interesting information including the fact that you've posted elsewhere. Please don't do that, it really doesn't help. But as long as you have, kindly come back to all of the threads you have started and synopsize the information you have received.
There are at least two, maybe three, manuals for QMaster in the FCP suite package. Most of their content is redundant so you may only need to bother printing one of them. I'm afraid it's too geeky for me so I will be watching your progress along with everyone else, learning what I can. QMaster has the weird limitation of requiring the clients to be on the same subnet.

  • Using XGrid with Final Cut Studio 2

    Hi all,
I'm at the office, we're trying to justify the purchase of a mac pro and another imac. One of the things we're looking to do is use xgrid, or some other distributed computing utility to aide Final Cut pro/studio in rendering and exports. Is there any way to set up Final Cut Pro to utilize xgrid?
    Thanks!

Compressor, the compression/conversion utility in Final Cut Studio, has the Qmaster clustering system to distribute compression among multiple computers; Xgrid is not required. For more information, see the Qmaster forum.

  • Using Server Admin with Leopard 10.5 (not the server version)

I have recently downloaded the Server Admin and would like to use the xgrid function. I am running Leopard 10.5 (not the server version). Is it possible to set up a server functions to use just xgrid with Server Admin and the Leopard 10.5 non server version system software. I want to set up a really small computer cluster between my macbook and imac. My problem is that I cannot seem to get a server started so I can select which functions I want to turn on (such as the xgrid). Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I tried several options from the link you suggested, by the xgrid lite seems to be for 10.4 Tiger. I have not been able to make it work for Leopard. Any suggestions?

  • Xgrid admin error

I have been running xgrid to use a utility that aids in video conversion. It seemed to be working ok, but while trying to figure out why it seemed to never use all the processors available and jobs would be pending, something happened.
On my PowerMac G5, the service seems to startup OK in sharing, however when I startup Xgrid Admin, and add the controller, I get a dialog for single signon or password. I don't have the service setup to use a password, and then it it errors out because it cannot authenticate either way.
Is there a way to resolve this problem, some configuration files somewhere that can be cleared that will stop Xgrid Admin from trying to ask for authentication it should not need when adding a controller
Also, in relation to the problem that got things broken it seems, I was trying to use xgrid with a PowerMac G5 and A Mini with Dual Core. Does xgrid care when it does processor sharing to batch the jobs whether the CPU's are the same type, ie G5 to G5, or Intel to Intel, as opposed to my setup G5 to Intel.
    thanks for any feedback...

Might be the order of operations you're doing. I'd try dragging out the com.apple.xgrid.<whatever> property lists and working on both machines from scratch.
The processor types issue over a network depends on what you are trying to do. If you're running client applications on xgrid and they function w/o xgrid or are specific to that architecture then it shouldn't matter at all. What I mean by they function w/o xgrid is, are you dispatching to machines where there is an application that does the processing running capable of running w/o xgrid. The best way to tweak your setup is to read the manual for the product you are using .
    good luck,

  • Xgrid Controller Unavailable

Podcast Producer and Xgrid live on the same box here and prior to Snow Leopard there was no trouble getting Podcast Producer connected to Xgrid. The server is connected to Active Directory, DNS responds correctly, user authentication is working fine, but it will not connect to Xgrid. I can connect to Xgrid with the Xgrid Admin tool using password authentication however.
Kerberos is functioning, but I would prefer to use a local user, not a domain user to run Xgrid tasks, but "Xgrid Controller service is unavailable on mymachine.mydomain.edu" no matter what I set Xgrid User Name and Xgrid User Password to, even when Xgrid is set to password authentication.
    Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.
    -James

Thanks David, that pointed me in the right direction at least.
Since it is somewhat complicated to get such an account created for our Active Directory as it is not directly managed by our department, I decided to disconnect from AD and run open directory standalone. Now it all authenticates correctly via kerberos locally, although I still need to resolve other mysterious issues as to why Xgrid is failing about 3/4 through the tasks I submit.

  • Xgrid? xsan? dns? help?

this is a school project and were trying to set up a system in which we have a client machine recording the podcasts that are then sent to the server to be stored, this is all done over a local network
i actually have a few questions..
do we need xgrid with our installation as we are only using one machine?
what is xsan? and what are OPTIONAL cluster files? does that mean i don't need them, yet they are in the system requirements?
and how do i properly configure dns? apples admin guide is pretty sketchy and hard to understand. I also tried the host command as stated in another forum but i got an error "Host xx.xx.xxx.xx.in-addr.arpa not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)" when typing in host then the address and "Host comp.local.dns not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)" when typing in host then the computer name
    thanks in advance

I've followed the instructions in apple's pdf:
    http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/PodcastProducer_Adminv10.5.pdf
and it worked very nicely for me.
You can set up podcast producer service on one machine without any xsans, or adittional grid nodes.
That one machine will run the xgrid service and act as both an agent and controller.
(My podcast server runs the following services:
    DNS
    Mail
    Web
    Podcast producer and
    Xgrid
as per the instructions in the PDF.)
Instructions inside tell you how to properly set up a brand new DNS. However, this DNS will only work locally on that machine, meaning if you call it podcast.yourschool.edu other machines on the network may not necessarily be able to find it. You'll need to ask your IT admins to add the entry to their DNS. (But that's for later.)
Read the PDF first, then sit at your machine and do as it instructs.
It would be ideal if you could do this on a very freshly installed OS, to make sure you can get your DNS set up, and then set up OD. DNS is crucial for Kerberos, and that is crucial for podcast producer.
    Hope that helps.

  • Xgrid job exit code

This should be quite simple, yet the solution still eludes me.
When I launch a job with xgrid, such as
    #xgrid -h med -p abc -job submit /usr/bin/cal -g
the job is submitted to an agent for execution. Some milliseconds later, the job status is changed to Finished which I can see by calling xgrid with -job attributes.
However, in my job submission, I'm calling /usr/bin/cal -g (an illegal switch), causing cal to fail, spurting out something like
    cal: illegal option -- g
    usage: cal [-jy] [[month] year]
    cal [-j] [-m month] [year]
ncal [-Jjpwy] [-s country_code] [[month] year]
    ncal [-Jeo] [year]
So there I have a job in the Finished status (not Failed) but yet it failed nonetheless. My question: how can I retrieve the exit code for /usr/bin/cal? I can't see it anywhere...

Yes, Thanks X_console, that should work.
In the meantime, I thought of this solution that also works for me.
When calling for a job's results, I do it first like this:
    xgrid ... -job results -id <job id> -so /dev/null
If anything comes up there, I know an error occurred and that the job terminated abnormally. While this doesn't give me an exact exit code, it's still useful.
Thanks again! I'll keep your solution handy for when I'm in need of a precise exit code.

  • Xgrid problem

Was using xgrid with a xgrid aware app, and eventually something must have gotton corrupted, even though I set no password, and try and connect within xgrid admin, it pops up a dialog wanting single signon or a password, and if I enter a password, it fails to connect.
Is there a way to reset this back to default? Just turning the xgrid service off and on does nothing and reboots do not do anything either. Don't want to have to re-install just to fix this, that would be a pain.. any ideas??

    Hi, Norm.
I suggest you search or post your question on the Xgrid Computational Service Discussion.
I don't mean to send you somewhere else, but that's where Xgrid questions are answered and the Xgrid gurus are found.
    Good luck!

  • Agents shutting service off randomly

i'm trying to set up an xgrid with a lot of clients/agents for video-transcoding. the first time i set it up, it all worked fine. i have an environment with several dual G4 (about 30), dual G5 (50), macpro's (70), macminis (9). a macmini does the controler-job and there are several clients that have once been connected (softwaredistribution through netrestore, settings-control over LDAP). now, in the beginning, all went well and the grid worked great. but now, the agents on the clients keep shutting down. i've deactivated the control of the xgrid settings on the directory-server and set the connection data manually, but still, as soon as i close the window, the agent is deactivated again. sometimes i can even see the checkbox getting unchecked after closing the lock again. i get this behaviour on computers installed with different images, over all different processor-architectures, new or older machines. at this moment, about 80% of the grid is down and i miss the power greatly, as we have a lot of encoding ahead of us.
it seems the problem is not unheard-off, but all the posts relating to this are closed and nobody seems to have an answer.
please help, deadlines are breathing down my neck...

  • Xgridagent couldn't obtain Kerberos TGT

    Hey!
I need some help with Xgrid-Agents. I installed a Mac Pro with Mac OS X Server 10.6.1 which is OD-Master and Xgrid-Controller. The agents are member of the OD and authenticated via Kerberos.
Now I try to join the Xgrid with these agents but I get these errors:
xgridagentd[240]: Notice: agent will always accept tasks
xgridagentd[240]: Notice: agent maximum task count is 1
xgridagentd[240]: Notice: agent processor speed is 1000
xgridagentd[240]: Notice: agent will authenticate controller using Kerberos
    xgridagentd[240]: Notice: agent "MacBook" started
xgridagentd[240]: Notice: agent will connect to controller "od-server.un.known.com"
xgridagentd[240]: Error: agent could not obtain Kerberos TGT for realm "OD-SERVER.UN.KNOWN.COM"
    xgridagentd[240]: Notice: agent failed
    com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.xgridagentd[240]): Exited with exit code: 1
com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.xgridagentd): Throttling respawn: Will start in 3 seconds
My system.log is full of these error messages...
The tool "Kerberos" in System/Library/CoreServices shows valid tickets for my OD-account (krbtgt). I also can send xgrid-commands via terminal to the Xgrid-Controller via Kerberos-Authentication. But why I can't join the Xgrid-Sharing? Its not possible to start the xgridagentd..
Does anybody know how to get these TGTs?

    Hi there,
    exact the same problem here.
I am having a Mac Pro running Snow Leopard Server. There is a Mac mini on the network with Snow Leopard (standard) that can become an xgrid agent, no problem.
Then I have a MacBook here, running Leopard (10.5.8) and I am not able to get xgrid sharing activated, but I find the exact same messages in syslog like igrigat.
I have made sure that I folowed the exact same procedure that I did with the Mac mini:
    1) Make sure that I have server and client registered in the DNS properly
    2) Configured a computer account in workgroup manager
    3) Bound the client to the OD domain
    4) Switch xgrid sharing on.
    5) Snow Leopard - success, Leopard - no success.
So it might be a bug in the system or some kind of incompatibility.
Waiting for a solution as well.
    Jo.

  • Is it possible to make use a computer with 10.3.9 with Xgrid?

I've read that it is possible, but when I go to the sharing tab in system preferences, there is no box for Xgrid.
I'd like to set up some computers to use as render clusers for Compressor. Several of the are still running 10.3.9 as we have some older graphics cards. Till the company pays to upgrade the cards, we stay with 10.3.9.

The Sharing tab gives you control over what servers are enabled on your machine. The Xgrid server is not included as part of the client edition of OS X -- it's part of OS X server.
The standard edition of OS X.4 comes with Xgrid clients, but I'm not aware of any Xgrid server software available for any platform other than OS X Server.
    Start here for more details.

  • What's up with Xgrid? Any non-science use?

So Xgrid was touted as a slick way to supercompute, but I haven't seen much done with it outside of biosciences.
Are there any applications for Final Cut, After Effects, or 3D rendering (like Maya, mentalray, Cinema 4D, etc)?

Is there anything useful here or here?
