Xhost:  unable to open display...

Greetings. I'm having install issues, and google is leading me to believe its due to the DISPLAY variable. The problem is all commands related to xhost, export DISPLAY, etc. all generate the error:
xhost: unable to open display "myIPAddress:0.0"
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!!!

DISPLAY=:0
Way too easy.

It sounds like you are issuing the xhost on the remote computer (after ssh). (If so, why are you doing that?)
    The sequence is:
    - Log on to a computer that has an X11 screen that you want to use for display
    - Open a terminal on this local screen ... do not su
    - Issue xhost
    - Note the 'DISPLAY' information
    - ssh to the computer/user that has the software to be run
    - issue 'export DISPLAY=' and add the hostname ':' and display info
    - run the command

  • Xhost + :  unable to open display ":0.0", Please help

Hello folks, I am running into problem with displaying X window on pc.
When I run xhost +, am getting 'unable to opne display ":0.0"
I was able to display window on another sun machine but not on the pc.
I beleive problem starts with the xhost + which produces error.
    Can you recommend something.

If you are trying to display an X window on a PC, then you need an X server on the PC- even if the application you are trying to run is executing on the sun server. PC's (presuming Windows 2000, XP or later) don't have an X server included. Sun and Linux bundled X windows clients and servers (and ssh clients and sshd servers) so they work a lot easier. X windows reverses what is normally considered a client and server.
I find most X display things work better if you can tunnel the display back over SSH. Typically on a sun client machine you should "ssh -X sunserver", run the app on the sun server, and the X display would get redirected back to sun client. Otherwise you need to run xhost on the X server machine (i.e. the client machine you are on) and use "DISPLAY=" or "setenv DISPLAY" on the X client (i.e. the sun server) to redirect display.
If you get Xming installed on your Windows PC, it includes ssh client functionality and a wizard that you can run on your PC get launch the X app on the sun server and tunnel it back. In theory, if the X server is running on the PC you should be able to set it accept X connections and then on the Sun server type "set DISPLAY=mypc:0.0;export DISPLAY" to redirect the X display- but that hasn't worked so well for me.
Cygwin also includes an optional X server for Windows- however, you seems to need be an admin-equiv for that to work. But I think it includes an X-term app that handles "ssh -X" for X redirection.
Attachmate (formery WRQ) has a commerical ssh/X package for Windows but I could never get X tunneling over SSH to work.

  • Xhost:  unable to open

    hi.
i got the error when i tried to set xhost.how to get GUI window in windows
_X11TransSocketINETConnect() can't get address for host150.yan.com:0:6000: Temporary failure in name resolution
xhost: unable to open display "host150.yan.com:0:0"
    how to do that.
    please help me out that

    1) Remote host is not known to the local machine
    2) DISPLAY variable for the local host is not set on the remote machine
    3) A firewall blocks the connection
For details refer to the documentation for your X-Client .

  • Unable to open display localhost:0.0 in VMware RedHat linux machine

I have been trying to Install Oracle 10g RAC in VMware linux virtual machine.
my virtual machines are running properly and I am able to use RSH & SSH.
when I run runInstaller it is not comming up due to DISPLAY environmental variable setup.
I have set the varable as follows
    DISPLAY=localhost:0.0; export DISPLAY
then if i execute xhost + it gives the following error
"xhost: unable to open display localhost:0.0"
I have tried with ipaddress instead of localhost. Eventhen it is giving the same error
What is the problem? How I can solve the issue?

i had the same issue. running the xhost + as root fixed the issue, but only after i switched to root using 'su -' instead of just 'su' (likely something in the profile scripts that get run when you use the '-' (dash) versus just using 'su'.
after running the xhost +, i was able to (as oracle) do:
    export DISPLAY=:0.0
    ./runInstaller
    And good to go.

  • [SOLVED] Rad 7790+Catalyst = Error: unable to open display (null)

Radeon HD 7790 + Catalyst = Error: unable to open display (null)
    Greetings,
I've installed Arch 2 days ago(migrated from Fedora), but I'm still a newbie to linux, so please have patience.
I've bought AMD Radeon HD 7790 recently and decided that it's time to upgrade system, but since then I had only problems with it. No LiveCD I tried (Fedora 20, Mint)  worked properly in graphics mode, so I suspected problem in built-in drivers and moved to linux with text-only installation (Arch), so I could install drivers later.
I've followed wiki manual and installed catalyst, removed open source driver, added nomodeset parametr to GRUB etc. but I'm still stucked, because Xorg won't start(black screen and errors presented in Logs). Tried googling, but learned nothing except Radeon proprietary drivers are comparable to suicide.

I've managed to solve this error:
(EE) AIGLX error: failed to open /usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/dri/fglrx_dri.so, error[/usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/dri/fglrx_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
There was missing library and few directories, which I found according to this http://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comme … _correctly at /usr/lib/dri, so I had to just symlink it. However, "unable to open display" error is still annoying me and Xorg is not working.
EDIT: Found EE about missing commands in new Xorg.0.log and installed xterm to solve this. Now I don't have entirely black screen after startx. There is white rectangular terminal and fglrxinfo seems to be all right as it detected my Radeon and OpenGL. Now I have to install some DE, but that's another story. Marking as [SOLVED] and once again thanks to clfarron4 for reply.

    [root@Machine1 Desktop]# LOL.
First and foremost - get out of the habit of using root unless absolutely required. You will not be able to use root in the real world and using it now for this kind of activity will simply introduce wrong habits.
Working as root most of the time ... Bad habit. Bad bad habit. Anyone teaching to log in and stay as root ... shame. In business, auditors will note the habit and user will be reprimanded, up to and including 'go find a new job - you are not the SysAdmin'.
Secondly - you need to understand xhost, and indeed 'display ownership'. When you log in to the Desktop, your screen is 'owned' by a userid. You use xhost (unwisely most of the time) to give permission to others to display on your screen.
Thirdly - you need to understand the influence of DISPLAY variable - it tells programs where they should display... on an authorized display ... such as the one authorized by xhost.
Since you want to do it the wrong way, use the following sequence:
    1) Log all the way out of Linux and the desktop (all the way - ensures you don't have screwed up environment)
    2) Log in (whatever user you wish - even the bad habit, go stand in the corner, root user)
    3) Open a new terminal and give permission to the world to use your screen and get the IP address of the machine. Prior to this xhost command do NOT su (nor set DISPLAY); do not cross Go; do not collect $200
    4) Open a new session, preferrably on a different computer (but open new terminal and then 'su - (otheruser)' will do)
    5) Under that new user, tell it to display on the IP address and screen from step 3
    6) Run xclock
But ... to install Oracle s/w, the 'right way' is to simply log all the way out and then log in to a new desktop as the non-root Oracle owner (on the machine; or using Xming or Xceed or ...; or using VNC client such as UltraVNC or TightVNC)
Did you notice that logging in as root by habit is a bad idea?

    Hi board,
I got SGD EE 4.0 running on a debian sarge. Ok. ok.. I know that debian is
not supported - but with some assistance I maneged to get SGD 3.? working
    on debian too.
As this assistance is no more available for me I hope to find some help
    here.
Starting the SGD is no prob and also the login via browser from a client
is working fine. But neither array- nor objectmanager can be strated as
there's an error when opening Display 0.0
Unfortunatly my linux know how is quite poor so I've no idea what to
check. Has anybody some ideas where to loo and what to to to make it work?
    cheers,

    Hi,
you should check, whether the range of virtual
X display, used both by ssh and tarantells
intersects. By default, both are using the
    range :10, :11, ...
Then you are using local (to the tta server) X
Apps via ssh (typical such apps. are object and
array manger), this can rise a confict.
The solution, in this case, is to change
the default range. For ssh: edit (e.g.)
    /etc/shhd/sshd_config and set
    X11DisplayOffset 200
Don't forget to send the master sshd daemon
a SIGHUP, that notic the sshd to reread it's
    config file...
    regards,
    Tankred

WTINIT: Unable to open X windows display.
WwError: Unable to create top level shell.
Now I know I haven't given much info here but I have a feeling that its simply that I haven't set some paths properly. Where does one normally call the X windows display from.
    Much thanks
    Anna
    Sunblade 1000 running solaris 10.

    Hi
Are you logged in to the machine remotely or locally?
If locally, then you shouldn't need to change anything.
There are two things that normally control the X display: the DISPLAY environment variable and the X authority. DISPLAY is usually set to [hostname]:0.0 (unless you have more than one display or are using an X server that emulates mutliple displays).
For X authority, you can either use xhost, which is simple but poses security issues, or xauth, less simple but more secure. If you are safely behind a firewall, and you trust your colleagues, then "xhost + [hostname]" is the quickest solution.

  • I am unable to open encrypted emails using webmail and a CAC reader.  It says "content can't be displayed because the S/MIME control isn't available."  I'm using a Macbook Pro with 10.10 OS and have tried both Safari and Chrome.

I am using a Macbook Pro with OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.  I am unable to open encrypted emails using webmail.  I have verified my certificates are loaded in the keychain for my military common access card while using a CAC reader.  When I try to view the message it gives me the error saying "content can't be displayed because the S/MIME control isn't available."

    Hi Gordon
This could happen if there is any mailbox which has occupied more space than its normal quota allocated.
As suggested by geo try to clean all the DB's first
You can probably run Get-Mailboxdatabase | Clean-Mailboxdatabase which will clean all of your DB's wait for some time until it gets completed
Also try running the command with the MRS server parameter switch and specify a CAS FQDN and see the results if it gets succeded
Get-Mailbox -Database 'DBNAME'| New-MoveRequest -TargetDatabase DBNAME -BatchName "BATCHNAME" -BadItemLimit 100 -AcceptLargeDataLoss -MRSserver CAS server FQDN Good Luck !!Please mark as helpful if you find my contribution useful or as an answer if it does answer your question. That will encourage me - and others - to take time out to help you.

  • Xhost +: unable to display

    Dear Linux and SAP Expert:
I am facing a problem, I want to install Oracle 9i on SUSE Linux, I need to use ora<sid> to install it, but when I use xhost +, i am prompted "xhost +: unable to display"
I have already set the followings:
    setenv DISPLAY <my hostname>:0.0
xclock is also unable to display.
What can I do???How can I solve this problem?
Really really thanks for your all reply
    Hisashi Glay

    Hi Hisashi Glay,
You can try the following senario also if you are taking VNC over windows machine.
Install the vnc server package i.e vnc-server-x.x.x. and download the vnc client for windows i.e. UltraVNC Win32 Viewer 1.0.1.
After the above activity do the following configuration at server end.
run the command as a root or ora<SID>. Whose graphical login you required.
In our senarion we use ora<SID>.
    run the command
    vncserver
vncpasswd #This is to set the password for that vnc login
after run the vncserver change the following setting in xstartup file
    cat ~/.vnc/xstartup
    #!/bin/sh
Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:
    unset SESSION_MANAGER
    exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
    [ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
    [ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
    xsetroot -solid grey
    vncconfig -iconic &
xterm -geometry 80x241010 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
    twm &
chage the below line as follows.
    unset SESSION_MANAGER
    exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
    #[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
Afte this changes kill the vncserver once
    vncserver -kill :1
than start the vnc server again.
    vncserver
Everything is done now use the gui of that server from windows client machine
    hostname:1 or IP Address:1
Hopefully this will resolve your problem
    Thanks and Regards,
    Kamal Kishore
