XHTML Terminology (Learning)

Would it be a good idea to learn and memorize XHTML
terminology before learning CSS for layout in Dreamweaver? My
problem is I don't know where to put "divs" and classes etc. and I
rely on the design mode to get things done.
Is there a resource that teaches me how to write XHTML in an
editor so I don't have to rely on the "Design Mode" for my website
design. I keep getting told to learn HTML and CSS so wouldn't it be
a good idea to study and memorize XHTML terminology and uses for
"divs", "class" etc.?
Does anyone know a
"Great Book" or a
"Great Website" where I can download and print off
XHTML Terminology to learn it? I want to know this stuff
inside out because I tired of relying on Web Editors for building
my websites exclusively.
Thanks

XHTML terminology is just HTML terminology. I'd say that
spending some time
here may just do the trick -

  • Ok so I'm the new boy

    I don't want to appear naive or stupid but I've just started at a new job and I'm wracking my brains to work out why the current phones on the network would not have a log out function set up? Even the most basic licence would surely allow this so is there a possible OR OBVIOUS reason that the phones would be set up in this way without a log out functionality??

    Just to clarify, WordPress is a dynamically driven website based on PHP and MySql.  Before you leap off that cliff, you'll need to brush up on XHTML and learn CSS as well as how DW works.  Taken in small regular doses, this isn't that big a challenge.  You just need to carve out adequate time to study and do some practice tutorials before you'll be ready to begin the real project.   My advice is to find or purchase a pre-built CSS layout that has been tested to perform well in all browsers.    This way you can look at the underlying code and learn from it.  If you get stuck on anything, post questions in this forum.

  • I Need to Learn SQL Server Terminology

    I downloaded SQL Server 2012 Express onto my Windows 7 machine, and need to know if an instance is the same as a file.  I have a MS Access database (many, actually) and am learning to convert/upgrade to a SQL Server 2012 database, but when I installed
    the Express, it started at 4 GB before I even created or copied any tables from my Access file.
    My goal is to upload the SQL Server databases to a hosting space (not my machine).  The transfer rate would take days to transfer this size.  Is the instance the only transferable object?

  • XHTML Mobile Using DW-8 & DW-CS3

    My first posting, hope I'm doing this right!
    According to Adobe Customer Service, DW-CS3 is required if
    one wishes to develop a mobile web site (Using XHTML Mobile 1.0).
    Dreamweaver 8 also has a setting for XHTML Mobile 1.0. Since
    I’m not a professional developer, and attempting to learn as
    I go; what’s the difference between XHTML Mobile 1.0 using
    DW-8 and DW CS3?
    Other than all the extras that come with the CS3 up-grade,
    will DW-8 do as good a job as CS3 if used for WAP/PDA development?
    Other than selecting “New” on the file menu, and
    “XHTML Mobile 1.0” in the “New Document”
    window; are there any other settings/configurations to make to
    insure that when opened, all succeeding new blank documents/pages
    are automatically sets to XHTML Mobile 1.0?
    Thanks,
    Chi

    Fireworks CS4 is currently having a lot of issues. So you may
    need to have a
    "backup" plan until a fix comes out.
    Dreamweaver CS4 can be quite lacking in performance unless
    you have a souped
    up computer.

  • Opening XHTML files in dreamweaver

    An agency gave me all the files to a XHTML page that I opened
    in Dreamweaver. This includes html, .inc files, css style sheets
    and java files. They are all structures in their correct folders(I
    think). When I open the XHTML in Dreamweaver, I get nothing what
    resembles what is currently on the web. In the design work area(the
    WYSIWYG part), I see nothing, but one element on top of another and
    everything is flush left.
    When I preview in a browser, everything is just like in
    Dreamweaver–the layout is completely gone.
    I'm new to CSS, what am I missing? Why are XHTML files not
    WYSIWYG.
    Thank you Brian

    Heya Brian,
    You have answered your own question. The reason the xhtml
    files do not show style on the page is because no style is
    presumably set for the page. Learn CSS and you will in effect be
    learning how to add style to your page.
    Hope that helps!

  • Video editing terminology, etc.

    OK, so I'm learning FCE with Tom Wolsky's book which I cannot imagine doing without and I'm finding that this forum is teaching me a ton as well. However, I need to better understand terminology & technical aspects of video editing (codec, compression, formats, conversions, etc). Maybe I'm making it more complicated than it needs to be, but I feel like I need an overall understanding of how video works so I can think through things vs. going through the motions without really knowing what I'm doing. Does that make sense? Most books I find cover everything from shooting video to editing, so it's hard to tell which ones would be helpful for me. Any recommendations?

    I think you may be taking it a little too seriously.
    How do I know ? ..........Because I was exactly the same - about everything I did !
    There's nothing wrong with it so long as the quest for knowledge doesn't become the goal and take away the pleasure of (in this case) actually making films.
    Michel's suggestions, especially about Wikipedia, are excellent. I have often posted a general technical question only to discover that Wikipedia could have provided the answer immediately.

  • Learning in a Hurricane

    I'd like to say my problem is that I'm really stupid but
    insofar as I don't remember alcohol having had that much cumulative
    effect please excuse if I seem to be ranting while simultaneously
    seeking help. As background:
    I came up with a business idea and knew fireworks/photoshop.
    I "painted" mockups of the site front end.
    The Flash developers I then hired to "make it work" failed
    miserably to the tune of $250,000+ (hey, I never said I was a tee
    totaller).
    I learned SQL/SQLYog and designed the site database --
    including as much business logic as possible in that tier.
    The Adobe Solutions Provider contracted to simply connect the
    "ends" also failed miserably to the tune of $150,000 I know, but
    it's not as though I still drink that much anymore).
    I set out to learn Flex and found MXML easy but ActionScript
    incomprehensible.
    Perhaps due to this efforts to connect to my MySql datasource
    have progressed slowly.
    Frankly though, the learning resources at each step along the
    way have been, well, lets call it "convoluted". Despite numerous
    book purchases/tutorial exercises and nearly infinite web research,
    the abundance of options, terminology, product upgrades etc. is
    more than half "the problem".
    Thus I proffer the following primarily for fellow noobs --
    though also in the sincere hope of finding mentor(s) to speed my
    own on-going learning curve (corrections/comments/advice actively
    sought):
    Flex (which is really Flash which is really ActionScript)
    provides the best (or at least incontestably most mature) front-end
    (or "View" tier) available today.
    Databases are (until they become immensely large)
    interchangeable on the backend (or "Model" tier).
    Communicating between the two is the "Controller" tier and
    good software design practice suggests breaking application code
    into (self-contained) "modules" saved (roughly) in separate Model,
    View and Controller folders (with further subfolders from there etc
    -- please don't ask me what Cairngorm is).
    In Flex, the controller is essentially code which listens for
    events (such as a mouse click on the "Google Search" button) and
    then dispatches "results" (say "search terms" to the database,
    whereupon it listens for that response and sends it back to the
    display page).
    Straight forward enough so far right? OK, well a big hurdle
    is the database needs an interpreter, the main applicable being PHP
    or ColdFusion. Primarily because Adobe seems committed to
    integration, CFusion is what I've chosen (but be advised each is a
    new programming language/skillset to master in addition to
    IIS/Apache setup and IMHO is best learned distinct from Flex).
    Meanwhile back at the ranch, data can be received by or sent
    from Flex via <mx:HTTPService> OR <mx:WebService> OR
    <mx:RemoteObject>. The first two require conversion from/to
    XML and so are more generally available but also "heavier" (costing
    bandwidth and CPU). Thus I've chosen the latter, especially due to
    extra/better features between it and ColdFusion.
    Specifically CF 7.02 and 8 have "Remoting" built in. This
    allows Flex to "see" the dbase and is what the CF wizards in Flex
    make use of. Additionally there are CFusion "add-ons" (don't even
    ask Adobe evangelists the product names) which provide scalability
    and Server-push capability (say for building a Flex Instant
    Messaging App).
    Yet despite this CF-Flex interactivity, ActionScript best
    practices argue for Object Oriented Programming. I'm beyond my
    comfort level now but I think this breaks down to databases
    delivering information as a "set" (i.e. 50 of First, Middle, Last)
    whereas OOP ideally would have a PERSON "class" (all of which must
    have attributes of First, Middle, Last) which it then would make 50
    "instances" of to display on the UI.
    These "classes" are defined or extended via ActionScript
    (note that MXML is really just preformed AS "classes" and a
    specific data-exchange benefit of AS3 is "strong typing") and
    specifically the "Controller" tier needs to be written in AScript
    (i. e. beyond the cfcs and AS classes the CF/Flex wizard creates
    for database interaction).
    As above, I hope this helps some of you out there, obviously
    I'm still struggling in some respects myself and welcome additional
    links and any other feedback -- especially all those who wouldn't
    mind my emailing them every now and then with a "stupid" question
    (possibly arising from my "University Days").

    I am not sure what your question is here,
    but I could suggest using a java backend using LCDS,
    Blaze-DS, WebORB or red5 to support amf3 using remote objects.
    As it sounds like that your DB is fairly complex, why not go
    for a better DB like PostgreSQL or something commercial, PostgreSQL
    can withstand higher loads while keeping it's performance (my
    experianc, not tryinto to flame here), see
    http://tweakers.net/reviews/657/6
    (PG 8.3 performs much better even).
    Then try to write POJO's in structured classes, make modules
    in flex Actionscript is really not that bad, but you need to handle
    it as a scripting language so keep it small.
    Appart from that, which I had the drink with you :)
    cheers,
    Ries

  • PHP generating XHTML syntax errors?

    Can somebody tell me I'm just missing something here? I hope
    that is the case. I am a long-time Dreamweaver user but have been
    resisting the version 8 upgrade. I wanted to finally delve into
    learning to use Dreamweaver's built-in PHP behaviors. So in MX 2004
    I dove into it only to realize that when inserting a PHP behavior
    (an insertion form, for example) into an XHTML 1.0 transitional
    document, Dreamweaver was inserting code formatted for HTML.
    Specifically, the input tags in the form did not end with "/>".
    I thought, well, who can blame them. I should update to version 8 -
    surely they've fixed that. I installed the version 8 Trial (8.0),
    but no dice - same errors. Then I thought well surely they have
    fixed this by the 8.0.2 patch - but still, no dice. Okay, sorry for
    the sacastic attitude - I'm just shocked that they would overlook
    such an important detail. If I'm doing something wrong and anyone
    has advice on it, I welcome the input of course.
    Thanks,
    Bob

  • Learned controller assignments often get stuck in Logic.... (?)

    Hey guys, when use hardware controllers for controlling parameters of softsynths in Logic, I find that the software knobs often get stuck while moving them. I can not see a pattern to this behaviour, but it happens if I learn assignments within Logic, or using my Novation remote SL and other controllers with templates.
    Is this a known issue. Anyone else getting it?
    thanks,
    Rob

    Yeah the whole controller assignment thing has me
    baffled. It seems to be geared towards specific,
    permanently installed "control surfaces".
    Not really - you can completely create your own multi-layer control surfaces, it's just that doing a complete control surface, with bank shifts for controlling track groups and so on is a fair amount of work, and takes some getting to know the controller assignments window, and the terminology like "modes" and "zones" etc
    However, the level of control it gives you is great, and if you want examples, you can for instance load a Logic Control controller surface into Logic and examine the way all it's assignments are configured.
    If you want to be more sure you can set up a
    transformer object to map midi cc's to your synths.
    I find it's way better (for me at least) to develop my own control surface support. I use a Korg MicroKontrol and found the default controller support to be rather clunky and not ideal for me, so I've developed and been refining my own control surface support which suits my needs perfectly. It's takes time and is an ongoing process, but is highly useful.
    I just wish some of the flaky behaviour was fixed, but my fingers are crossed for future versions...
    In any case, if you want to map a fader to a softsynth parameter, just hit apple-L, click on the onscreen control, and twiddle you fader. Assignment learnt. Do this for the parameters you want, turn off learn mode, and twiddle away with perfect automation.
    Don't also forget the automation quick access as well - assign your mod wheel to this, and you can select any parameter of a plug and quickly use the mod wheel to control it or write automation etc.

  • Indisign scripting and cross-media export - Xhtml / Dreamweaver

    Hi.
    I've searched for the solution but haven't found it yet. Hope you'll help me.
    I need to write a script which will transform all indd files in the selected folder to xhtml. But I cannot find methods for exporting files to xhtml in JS (like menu -> File -> Cross-media export -> Xhtml / Dreamweaver). Is it possible? how?
    P.S. Using CS3
    Thanks

    Thanks Olav, that would be very helpful if you could.
    You're right, and XSLT is what Java uses for the CS2 version of
    this project. We never used ExtendScript to do anything other than
    mapping styles to XML.
    I was hoping to avoid too many details, but this might benefit the discussion:
    Original need:
    We use an open source project called Sakai (Learning Management System)
    that comes with documentation which we rebranded every time a new release
    was rolled out. Our implementation of the Sakai LMS is called TRACS here at
    Texas State University|San Marcos and we have a pretty strong demand for
    consistentcy and adhering to project and university level branding guidelines.
    Our support staff was using word documents and spent a laborious 2 months
    minimum with their workflow getting everything migrated. Our branding needs
    were steep. I was the graphic designer at the time the brand was created
    and saw branding issues with the word docs being authored. We constantly
    fought issues with inconsistent formatting (logo placement, logo version,
    leading, fonts, etc.).
    Automation with ExtendScript was the answer (and Java, AppleScript).
    What took a variety of people with differing MS word skill sets 2 months
    now took a mere 5 minutes or less.
    Rough outline of our app:
    Our Java process looks at a watched folder and coordinates the automation
    with receipts that are written out after each phase is done.
    Our Word documents are formatted with identically named character
    and paragraph styles that are found in our InDesign template.
    Java grabs a list of all the word docs to be processed, writes out an include
    to be used later for our ExtendScript.
    ExtendScript systematically takes each one in the array:
    - takes care of flowing in the word doc
    - page numbering
    - mapping styles to tags
    - PDF export
    - XML export
    - XML cleanup (some trash comes over from the export)
    - XHTML generation
    - writes receipts at each phase to tell JAVA it's ready for
    the next phase as flow control
    Java picks up the receipt, transforms XML (using XSLT) to XHTML snippets that
    the end user copy/pastes into our Content Management System. Ultimately, we'll
    shoot for direct DB inserts, but we have to get the dust off the CS2 version
    before we can discuss that again.
    In regards to not using XSLT:
    A recent test we did showed that InDesign CS4 had the ability to export very clean XHTML
    based on style sheets applied to items in the document. Effectively, that negates our
    need for XML mapping of stylesheets and the use of XSLT.
    That is, if cross-media exports can be automated.

  • Safari 4 - XHTML 1.1

    Hi,
    I'm sorry but I don't speak english very well...
    So, I'm learning XHTML and I tried some code of a book. The result is not what was expected. I tried it on Firefox and Opera too and both Safari and Firefox don't respect the code. Here it is:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml11.dtd">
    <html>
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />
    <title>Tableau élémentaire</title>
    <style type="text/css">
    .gras {font-weight: bold; background-color: red; }
    .prix {background-color: yellow; }
    .date {background-color: #AAA; color: blue; }
    </style>
    </head>
    <body>
    Groupements et colonnes
    <table border="5" width="100%" rules="groups" summary="Facture de livres" cellpadding="5">
    <caption><big>Facture de votre commande de livres</big></caption>
    <!-- Groupe 1: dates -->
    <colgroup id="date" span="1" width="10%" align="center" class="date"></colgroup>
    <!-- Groupe 2: Titre et Auteur -->
    <colgroup id="titre" span="2" width="25%" align="left" class="gras"></colgroup>
    <colgroup id="prix" span="3" align="right" class="prix" ><col width="10%" /><col span="2" width="15%" /></colgroup>
    <thead><tr><th>Date</th><th>Titre</th><th>Auteur</th><th>Quantité</th><th>Prix unitaire</th><th>Prix total</th></tr>
    </thead>
    <tfoot><tr><th>Date</th><th>Désignation</th><th>Auteur</th><th>Quantité</th><th >Prix unitaire</th>
    <th>Prix total</th></tr></tfoot>
    <tbody>
    <tr>
    <td>29/05/2005</td><td>XHTML Design</td><td>Jeffrey Zeldman</td><td>3</td>
    <td>32.00 €</td><td>96.00 €</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td>15/06/2005</td><td>CSS 2</td><td>Raphael Goetter</td><td>2</td><td>30.00 €</td><td>149.50 €</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
    <td>10/09/2005</td><td>XHTML et CSS</td><td>Jean Engels</td><td>5</td><td>29.90 €</td><td>149.50 €</td>
    </tr>
    </tbody>
    </table>
    </body>
    </html>
    Safari (and Firefox) doesn't respect alignments and groups. Opera does.
    Is this a "bug" or did I do something wrong?
    Thank you.

    Thats the link that is'nt working as I explained when I first posed the question. Does Apple have a FTP site?
    That link was very busy and very slow yesterday. Towards evening it picked up speed. There is nothing wrong with the link. I used it when it was very busy but Safari4.01 still downloaded, albeit very slowly, and installed perfectly.
    At one point I measured Apple's server speed at below 20KB/s. It's currently running at close to 3MB/s with a complete download in under 20 seconds.

  • Lifet After HTML/XHTML and CSS

    Since I could not afford going to college for web design, I
    relied on books, articles and this forum to jump start my knowledge
    on web development. I will never be an "expert" on web development.
    I say this because the web language and technology is constantly
    changing and one must keep up with today's craving for digital
    supremacy.
    Few months ago I was unable to create a web page with out
    Dreamweaver design view but now, I hate design view. I sit and
    create web pages in note pad all day and I love it! I love writing
    raw codes and my dream is to become one of the best web developer
    some day.
    Anyway, I have learned a lot about CSS/XHTML to at least
    create basic websites but I want to take the next step since I can
    now afford to take college classes.
    What do I learn next? I want to learn another language that
    will enhanced my design/developer technical knowledge. Do I go
    JavaScript? Flash/Actionscript?
    I want to learn a technology that can create interactivity on
    the web but with all the different languages, I'm confused as to
    where to start.
    Any advise?

    Many of us have backgrounds in areas other than web
    development, and
    learned it the same way you did.

    However - (X)HTML and CSS are the backbone of web
    development, and will
    remain so for the forseeable future. (Like until
    October...)[1]

    I can - and do - some development in a text editor. However,
    the
    conveniences Dreamweaver adds - things like tag completion
    and file
    management - mean that I do most of my work in DW's code
    view.

    Learn serverside scripting, either PHP or ASP.Net/C# or maybe
    .Net/jscript. Check the want ads or online job boards for
    what
    companies are looking for in the area you want to work.
    There is some work out there for Flash developers, either as
    part of a
    team or as a subcontractor, doing parts of sites. A lot of
    sites I see
    use a Flash header to add some interest to a page. But the
    number of
    straight Flash sites is limited, and I suspect will be for a
    while.
    Javascript is good too, and some people make a living from
    creating
    javascript widgets for web development. See, for example,
    Project
    Seven (
    http://projectseven.com/) or
    Michael Brandt (Diva HTML
    http://www.divahtml.com/).
    And a competent web developer should have a
    passing familiarity with it. But I'd guess that you're
    unlikely to
    land a local development job based on your javascript
    abilities.
    [1] For the humor impaired - I'm kidding. It will be November
    at
    least. I'm not sure what the year will be, though.

  • JAVA 101: I need help with the terminology !

    WARNING: Long post, lots of silly questions. But It might help a
    lot of people.
    Hello,
    I'm having a tough time understanding BASIC JAVA technology in
    general and the way it is used to deploy web forms. Apart form
    the marketing droid stuff (Easy to install, works just fine,
    etc..), Oracle does not give any documentation about what gets
    installed and how the technology works with respect to oracle.
    I don't want to learn the JAVA language, I don't need it in my
    job. But I'd like to be able to determine what might be
    hapenning when oracle crashes and I'd like to know what to tell
    me developpers when they ask me what's available etc.. For
    example, if one of my developpers wants to work with java beans
    I have 2 problems:
    a) I don't have any idea about what a Java bean REALLY is
    b) I don't even know how oracle works with it and where to
    install the beans I could download.
    I need a terminology guide. What is a class ? whis is ewt ? How
    can I extend the java code that oracle gives us ? Is it
    possible ? Where do I start ?
    Looking at the $ORACLE_HOME/forms60/java/forms directory, I can
    see that all that is under this directory seems to be some kind
    of java objects (with dots in it, etc..) am I right ? At least
    when the java applet console is running, the messages that pass
    accross seems to relate to this directory in some way...
    What about the ewt directory ? What is it used for ? Do I really
    need it to deploy java web forms on the web ? Which product
    installed this directory ?
    What if I use jinitiator, do I still need the JDK (JDK or JRE ?)
    or is it "bundled" under the jinitiator directory somewhere ?
    What is JRE ? Is is installed by Sun's JDK, oracle's JDK or
    Jinitiator ? Applet viewer ?
    What about the BASIC virtual machines that come with the
    browsers (IE and Netscape) ? Do they need the JDK ? Where do
    they install their stuff ? Can they conflict with oracle's ?
    Can there be more than one JDK installed on my windows machine
    without me knowing ? In what registry keys to the JDK/JRE stuff
    puts stuff ?
    MOST IMPORTANT: How do I TOTALLY get rid of ALL the java stuff
    on my windows clients so I can later perform a FULL reinstall ?
    I think some of our clients are pretty messed up, after
    installing, deinstalling and reinstalling different versions of
    applet viewer, JDK and jiniiator. I'm pretty sure there are some
    pointers in the registry that are wrong (in Netscape, I get a
    lot of error talking about a java "bridge" that's broken, but
    don't know how to fix it or even what it is !)
    I don't think the ORACLE JINITIATOR UNinstall does a good job or
    removing all it installed in the registry and that may be the
    source of the myriads of problems we have with Web Forms.
    We don't know who to blame when a problem occurs in web forms:
    Forms Server ? OAS ? Solaris ? Windows ? Jinitiator ? At lkease
    if we KNOW that Jinitiator is OK...
    Any GOOD documentation explaining the basics (and if possible,
    something putting it in the context of Oracle, stating the
    differences) would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for your patience and your time.

    The Pen and Pencil tools are very useful but require a little practice to get comfortable with. In this video you'll get a chance to play around with these tools, using the Pen tool to create clouds and the Pencil tool to create hills.

    In the beginning it says, "using my smart guides" and yet I don't see any smart guides. Nor does doing what I think is the exact same thing being told here produce results that are equal. When I click on a point, let go of the mouse and click on a 2nd point and then continue the process I start getting mirror triangles and then as I progress things start getting really weird. Obviously a few details were left out. No, I would have to say not a good place to be if you are truly a beginner as I am--too many steps left out, too many assumptions (like thinking I am aware of all the terminology) etc. Time to look elsewhere to learn. I thank Adobe nevertheless.
