Lock inheritance with "CALL FUNCTION func IN BACKGROUND TASK"

I see that the "SAP Lock concept" documentation states that for locks obtained with _scope = '3', all UPDATE tasks (spawned via "CALL FUNCTION func IN UPDATE TASK" inherit the lock (which is released only once all such update tasks and the calling process have requested a DEQUEUE).
What should happen when instead, I use "CALL FUNCTION func IN BACKGROUND TASK" (for doing the update in a queue)? Are the locks inherited here as well?

Hopefully not, as a background task may be executed late. While update tasks are to be executed quickly (if not, administrators should review the system configuration, like increasing the number of UPD workprocesses).
Solution: In the background task, redo the locks, as if it was a background job.

Executing a PL/SQL

Isnt there a way to execute a called stored procedure and function and have that procedure execute, and have the processing of the calling procedure continue in parallel? I thought I remembered seeing this, but cannot find an appropriate solution. Thanks.

"autonomous transactions" pop into mind (>=8i), but if they really execute in parallell and solve your problem, I wouldn't know, never tried it. Check concepts documentation for the above string.

Purchasing flow with stock - Integration to FM

Dear experts,
my customer would like to have the FM budget check only when the warehouse orders from the supplier (on the warehouse FC)
For this purpose I implemented a fix FC assignment, whenever the "Inventory Flag" is avtive. For specific movement types, I implemented an assignment of statistical commitment item.
Now I face the following problem:
When posting the Purchase Order, everything works fine (I can see in the trace of FMDERIVE, that the inventory flag is active and therefore, the FC will be filled)
When posting a goods receipt (TA MIGO) on the same Purchase Order, the Inventory flag is no more active as I see in trace. The system throws error message FC is not filled.
Do you know this issue and what to do?

Hi Thomas,
I have some information that may help you with your issue:
- Please check if you have defined in FMDERIVE a derivation rule to clear commitment item or funds center field. You should adjust FMDERIVE in order to avoid that FMDERIVE overwrites the inherited account assignment if you wish to maintain the account assignment across the whole MM document chain.
- You need to set the field status of the field FLG_INVNTRY_PSTNG in purchase order to 'Display' in order to ensure the use of the automatically derived account assignments.
- On the other hand, you are posting a Goods receipt (MIGO, probably movement type 101) where the related business transaction is RMWE. If this is your case it is correct that the Inventory posting flag is not relevant in this case as it is not an inventory posting.
If you want to get business transaction RMWA, you need to post Goods issues and use a different movement type, i.e. 201K
I believe that you are using scenario 1. Note 700485 says:
a) for scenario 1:
A statistical commitment item must be derived for all goods issue postings concerning the warehouse (process RMWA in field
TRANSAC). Since the relevant account assignments are already entered with the purchase order for the FM, SAP recommends to change these to mandatory fields by means of the field status.
Process RMWA is Goods Movement, done by transaction MB11.
Process RMWE is Goods receipt for purch. order
Please check your trace log and see which process appears there, I believe that trace shows process RMWE and flag
FLG_INVNTRY_PSTNG not marked when you are in MIGO.
May you so kind to clarify RMWE from MM point of view? Is it correct to create RMWE, movement 101 for stock?
It seems to be that the standard program is not considering your example with RMWE as a stock movement, it is expecting a RMWA process to be able to have the flag FLG_INVNTRY_PSTNG marked.
Please refer carefully to the Warehouse concepts documentation. In order to bypass this error, you should work under one of the Warehouse scenarios supported by SAP and adjust your customizing accordingly.

How to modify a database?

Hi forum members, I recently installed oracle10g on solaris 10 , and I could create a test database called solaris, but I could'nt create a new table for that database, Indeed I don't know how to open the database, thanks for your help I'm new in oracle and solaris as well.

You really need to get caught up on some basics. I encourage you to pick up the O'Reilly book titled 'Oracle Essentials' (see http://oracle.oreilly.com) to get up to speed. And then plan on spending some time either in the 2-day DBA or Oracle Concepts documentation.
To give you a bit of a start -
An Oracle database is a bunch of files. The database is controlled by an Oracle Instance. The instance is started (attached to the database) and stopped. In Windows the instance is a [Control Panel] service.
A listener can be started [and stopped] to monitor the network for requests. It is also a service. If it is not started, the instance will not respond to any network requests but WILL respond to SQLPlus requests by the same userid that installed the database and software.
You use the internal userid called SYS to do basic things like start and stop the instance. The SYS userid should never be used for anything else (there are exceptions to every rule, but...). Most newbies ignore this advice until they blow up their first database.
You can use DBA userid such as SYSTEM to manage the database to do things like add/manage users, add/manage schemas and add/manage tablespaces. A DBA userid should only be used for managing the database, not for owning tables and not for application work. Most newbies ignore this advice until they cripple up their first database.
User:
A userid should be created for each user - and each schema (see next section). You create it using sqlplus commands, usually run by the SYSTEM user
CREATE USER username IDENTIFIED BY password ACCOUNT UNLOCK
DEFAULT TABLESPACE USERS TEMPORARY TABLESPACE TEMP;
and give it privileges such as accessing the database and storing data by
ALTER USER username QUOTA UNLIMITED ON USERS;
GRANT CONNECT TO username;
Schema:
A schema is a special user that also has resource capability and ability to create and manage objects such as tables. There are many kinds of objects and ideally you should give permission to create/manage only those objects that are needed, such as
GRANT CREATE TABLE TO username; -- this makes is a schema.
Cheating - you can grant the resource role to the user which provides all the GRANTS for most objects.
GRANT RESOURCE TO username;
I call it cheating, because few actually look at the role and fewer realize how much capability is given by the resource role. It's pretty darned close to opening up security holes. Oh well ...
People who have had time with other RDBMSs such as SQL Server may view an Oracle Schema as roughly the same as a SQL Server (or other) Database.
Tablespace:
A tablespace is like a disk to Oracle - you can store things such as [many] tables and indexes in a tablespace. A tablespace is made of [one or more] operating system files. A number of files can be used in a tablespace to get around things like the 2GB limit that many operating systems have for typical files.
There are a bunch of tablespaces:
SYSTEM is for keeping the internal data dictionary and you should avoid using it for anything as filling it up will cause the database to stop.
SYSAUX is for Oracle's options and features and you should avoid using it as filling it up causes major pain. SYSAUX was introduced in 10g.
TEMP is used for sorting and other internal stuff. Do not let it autoextend otherwise it will grow forever. If you limit the size the area will be reused even though it appears to be busy.
UNDO/ROLLBACK is used for internal stuff such as recovering the original data if you cancel a transaction. Keep away from it other than to make it bigger. It's you friend - feed it properly and you can recover from data mistakes you made a few days ago.
Regular tablespaces are what's left - that's where your tables and indexes go (remember the DEFAULT TABLESPACE clause in create user???)
CREATING TABLES ...
Simplest form: as a new userid,

Oracle provides a few demo userids such as OE, HR, SH, IX & PM. Go to the documentation for your version of the database at http://docs.oracle.com and pull up the document titled 'Sample Schemas'. They are to help you learn about Oracle complete with data, and are usually loaded by default into new databases. A number of the examples and tutorials at Oracle By Exmaple (from http://otn.oracle.com >> Training menu >> Oracle By Example) use these schemas.

Runtime changes in FP10 compared to FP9

Hello all,
I am attempting to track down an issue that we are having with a flash based application which was originally developed for Flash8,
Upon launch it loads several large xml documents and loads and links together several external swf files( all of which are in the same security domain.
Everything seems to load fine, and the application begins, only to fail during the beginning of the first interactive portion.
This application has worked for us without modification on flash player 9, and upon upgrading to flash player 10, the application no longer functions.
It was my understanding that flash player was backward compatiable with previous versions, this situation puzzles me. I am curious to know a couple things:
Is it possible to have the flash player 10 run in a "compatibility mode" where it would mimic the internal runtime of flash player 9?
Are there some changes to flash player 10 which could trigger this type of failure?
Any insight would be appreciated, thanx.

Orchestration Plan is final. Once generated we cannot alter until a revision. So, if possible find out all information before generating orchestration plan. Lets say, If you get this information from other system, then talk to that system using DataProvider and get the necessary information & then generate the orchestration plan. That's when u can skip this shiporder function totally.
But not after generating Orchestration Plan.
Amendments/Revision Order is hard to explain interms of SalesOrder. You need to have more expertise in this area. Go through the OSM's concepts documentation & also have a look at the out of the box O2A PIP cartridges and try to get some idea.
FulfillmentMode will/should be same for both New Order/Revision Order.

Question about sdo_relate function

My application has to check if a point geometry is inside (MASK='ANYINTERACT') a polygon geometry. I am trying to figure out if sdo_relate function works with rectangle only or if it works with polygon. I have wrote a few sql test and it seems to work with polygons, but I dont know how it works.
My question is, if the geometry is not a rectangle, why dont I have to use projection to project both geometry into a plane first?
For example if I have a polygon (-140, 35, -139, 36, -139, 35, -140, 34, -140, 35) and a point(-139.3, 35.6) how does sdo_relate finds out if the point is within the polygon without projecting them?

how does oracle connects the points in a polygon that's not on the same latitude or longitude?Your question is a little ambiguous. What do you mean by 'not on the same latitude..'? Are you talking about different coordinate systems? Or do you just mean how does Oracle know whether your point is inside the polygon or not?

How to become a good DBA

i am working in oracle from 1 year
on developer and oracle 8i database.
now i am intersting in oracle dba field.
because in INDIA there is a good career of oracle DBA.
so please guide me in DBA filed
1.how we can start learn dba concept.
2.books of oracle dba.
3.interview question related with dba.
4.what are the main concept of dba on that i will work hard.

Some thoughts:
1) You should know datamodelling. This is not specific to Oracle but to a DBA in general. A good DBA knows how to model data! There are several books on datamodelling out there, have a look at any online bookstore. You need this knowledge if you ever want to write good SQL and understand performance impacts and backup & recovery strategies.
2) Read the Oracle concepts documentation. It explains the architecture of Oracle and is the basis of what you need to know when becoming a DBA.
3) As Frederic said: know SQL*Plus! If all else fails, this will allow you to fix things in any circumstance. Certification also revolves around command line interaction.
4) Read the administrator guide. This explains things you need to know for maintaining an Oracle DB.
5) Read a good DBA-tasks book to get an idea of day-to-day things you need to do (the repetitive stuff).
As to what version: it depends on your environment. If you need to work on 8i in your company, start with that. It doesn't make sense to read something you can try out since the version of the database does not allow it. If you have a choise, I would suggest 9i since 8i is old and almost de-supported and phased out soon enough. 10g will come in beginning 2004. Once you have the basic knowledge, it could be handy to at least read the 'new features' documents on the web and keep doing this on a regular basis. They allow you to see differences and how they can be beneficiary to your company/clients. This additional value will be very visible in your company!
I don't agree that you should forget about 10g for the next 3-4 years. It doesn't hurt to keep in contact with the new developments so you know when to use an old version and when a new version. Also, stability is usually not a serious factor. Little cosmetic bugs are fixed fast and shouldn't hamper you in most of your normal DBA work. Besides, within a year you will see companies ask for specific 10g knowledge in their recruitement efforts. So keep your eyes open.
Ask Tom is really good and a must read(!), but not essential in the first weeks of reading. Know sql and Oracle concepts before you read that site, 'cause otherwise it can be confusing at times.

Some dba and OS related confusions

Hi All,
I have few doubts related to database and OS perspective. Could pelase someone let remove my these doubts and clarify below questions:
Qus1: Can we have two listener.ora file with same default port number 1521?
Qus2: Why do we create two groups "dba" and "oinstall" while installing oracle database?
Qus3: If my database is in archive log mode and in case archiver process is killed then redo will be archived or not otherwise what will happen?
Qus4: If I have catalog database for RMAN metadata. And in case catalog database is crashed. Will I be able to use RMAN backupsets for restore the database?
Qus5: What is needed to run "some_path/root.sh" script while installing the oracle database at last step?
Qus6: How can we get to know what are the database running in my server from OS level itself means if any database is shutdown or crashed, can we get to know about those database from OS level itself? If yes then please specify the command?
Qus7: How can we configure UDP protocol for my listener?
Qus: If I am updating one table and update query is going on. Inbetween OS gets shutdown then when it is back my transaction will rolledback. Please let me know how it happenes means is there any process to do this or something else?

A1. If on the same machine then only if they are listening on different virtual IPs, otherwise not on the same machine. As previously stated, you can try this out for yourself.

For role separation such that if you multiple software installations and/or databases on the same machine, all will have access to the central inventory owned by the primary "oinstall" group, while the other installations/databases can be owned by other secondary groups (i.e. "dba", "dba1", and so on). Taken a step further you can have different oracle software owners with the same primary "oinstall" group but different secondary groups.
Q3: If my database is in archive log mode and in case archiver process is killed then redo will be archived or not otherwise what will happen?
A3. I like the idea of testing this out for yourself so I'll leave this to you ;-)
Q4: If I have catalog database for RMAN metadata. And in case catalog database is crashed. Will I be able to use RMAN backupsets for restore the database?
A4. This depends on a few things but in the simplest case, assuming you have the control file, only need to recover a datafile, and the backup data is still available (as specified by the CONTROL_FILE_RECORD_KEEP_TIME parameter), then yes.
Q5: What is needed to run "some_path/root.sh" script while installing the oracle database at last step?
A5. You must have access to the root account (directly or indirectly via sudo as an example) at the command line.
Q6: How can we get to know what are the database running in my server from OS level itself means if any database is shutdown or crashed, can we get to know about those database from OS level itself? If yes then please specify the command?
A6. There are two different questions here, namely check for running databases, and check database status. To check for running databases from the OS there are some options, the most basic is likely the command:
ps -eaf | grep ora_pmon | grep -v grep
The above checks for running processes, pipes that output through a 'grep' filter for commands having 'ora_pmon' (Oracle PMON process), which in turn is filtering out the command used to do the check itself (i.e. having 'grep' in the command).
To check the status you'll need to scrap the alert log file for certain strings. You could also use 'srvctl status database -d <dbname>' if that is available, but it will only give online/offline status.
Q7: How can we configure UDP protocol for my listener?
A7. Don't worry about this, it's taken care of auto-magically. Read the Oracle networking documentation for information.
Q8: If I am updating one table and update query is going on, in between OS gets shutdown then when it is back my transaction will be rolled back. Please let me know how it happens meaning is there any process to do this or something else?
A9. There's nothing that you need to do, it's handled internally by the database. I highly recommend reading through the concepts documentation for full understanding of this, as well as how things generally work inside the Oracle database.

Undo Tablespace queries

Hi All,
I am bit confused with reading about the undo table space. so i need some clarification
1. There are 2 undo tablespace in our application. Could someone explain how the 2 undo tablespace works? I didn't find any details about this.
2. Both the undo tablespace is 100% utilized. Where the the new transaction will go? Will new transaction force the used blocks to be expired if needed?
3. What should be the ideal size of undo tablespace with respect to the total storage size?
4. is Archive log related to undotable space? if yes then When the archive logs get generated?

1. In an RAC database, each Instance has to have it's own Undo Tablespace.
In a non-RAC (single instance) database, only one Undo Tablespace may be active at any time. The other Undo Tablespace would be inactive but can be switched to with an ALTER SYSTEM SET UNDO_TABLESPACE command.
2. Even if an Undo Tablespace is "100% used" Oracle can expire (and even drop) old extents and segments that are no longer needed by the Undo_Retention value. Thus, undo data for older transactions that have committed (more than Undo_Retention period has elapsed since the commit) will be overwritten.
3. There's no "ideal size". Undo sizing is based on Transaction volumes, fluctuations in transaction volumes, query patterns etc.
4. No, there is no direct relation between the two. However, all Undo that is generated also is written to Redo -- i.e. Redo captures Undo as well as it captures changes to Tables, Indexes etc.
