XI needs a Database

Hi experts,
I am writing a diploma-thesis regarding load-testing on XI.
To my knowledge, XI will need a database for e.g. persistency management or archiving messages. Therefore XI won't work without a database...
I am looking for an official SAP document, which exactly says this...
I hope you can provide me such a document.
Thanks and Regrads,
Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,
Please go through the XI installation guide.
https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/a5550de0-0701-0010-a8b4-9fd433a080f3 (official document)
Unicode SAP Web AS ABAP + Java system is prerequisite for core SAP XI. (Page 16)
So XI seats on SAP Web AS and SAP Web AS seats on Database.
Hope this will help.

  • Discoverer 11g need oracle database 11g?

    Hi,
I have discoverer 11g. i try to open EUL of 10g discoverer. normally it will ask to upgrade the EUL. But it throws TNS error.
Can anybody tell, Does discoverer 11g version need oracle Database 11g or it will work on 10g Database?
    Thanks,

In the past Discoverer tools/clients and EUL had to be of the same version, and I expect this to be the same for "11g".
You can probably have the Discoverer 11g EUL in a 10.x Database, but not Discoverer Admin/Plus 11g working with a previous EUL version (except, perhaps, for upgrading the schema objects to correct version of EUL).
    Check the documentation!

  • Grid computing will diminish need for database administrators?

from what i understand, grid computing will eventually turn database services into a "utility" where everyone uses the service on an as needed basis from a central area. how is this going to affect the need for database administrators? won't demand greatly decrease since companies will be getting their database needs from somewhere else and will no longer have a need for a database internal to the company?

Wrong. It just makes the DBA more productive. It allows for a company to pool their resources to run more databases. For eg. an analyst wants to run a report on a special version (a snapshot) of the production db; the DBA would not have to scrounge around for hardware and storage to instantiate the db for the analyst. Instead, the DBA would snap a tablespace, mount the tablespace for the analyst db all within the same grid and using the same resources.

  • Advice needed regarding Database design practice

OK, here is my situation. I've started working for a company about 6 months ago. I'm a .NET developer with 12+ years of experience. Most of my experience with databases is with SQL Server. Recently I've discovered an design change with our Oracle database that our DBA made that I completely disagree with.
We had a single Event table that holds records that pertain to all HTTP traffic on a network as HTTP Usage Event. There are multiple hardware units called 'Sensors' that monitor the network and report these HTTP events to the database. At some point not long ago, the table was holding just over a million records. Performance was suffering so the DBA decided to make a change to the database to accommodate. The change she made was to create a separate Event table for each sensor. Each sensor has an integer value as a unique identifier, so our database went from having a single Event table to now having Event_100, Event_101, Event_102, etc...
So, we now have over 200 Event tables in our database. Anytime a sensor is added to the system, we need to add another table (actually two as there is a 2nd table that was duplicated in this same fashion).
How do I present this to my boss and to the DBA in a way that I don't embarrass my boss (he approved the change) and without pissing off the DBA? I can't imagine that the table couldn't have been optimized as it was to take care of the issues with performance without so dramatic a change.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There is a job to purge old data. Events are kept for 3 months. These jobs were actually part of the problem, as well as removing sensors from the system. In either of these cases, the deletion of the data (more so with the removal of a Sensor i.e. DELETE FROM EVENT WHERE SENSORID = X, was taking too long).
I'm surprised that there have been people agreeing to this design. So, now we have 208 sensors, so 208 Event tables and another table named DATA_HASH duplicated 208 times. There may be a time when our database will be handling data from over 1,000 sensor units. Maybe even double that. Can anyone argue that having 2,000 event tables is the way to go? What if we need to add a new field to the table? Do that 2000 times?
I've been looking at bit more at the data today. I found some event tables haven't got any data (0 rows) while others range in row counts of 2 million up to as much as 30 million? I've talked to SQL DBA's and they all think that Oracle should be able to handle billions of rows in a table.
Also, just out of curiosity, I looked up the max size for a table in Oracle 10. I know the number of rows isn't the determining factor for this, but size of the data. I was astounded to find out the max size for data storage for a single table. 127 TB (yeah, tera bytes). Based on this size, it seems our data could be handled by 1 table, but then maybe I'm wrong.

  • !! Urgent Help Needed in Database Table Recovery !!

    Hi,
What happened is I add a new field to the table. It's a field which need reference but I didn't include it and proceed with table adjustment in under SE11->Utilities->Database Adjustment. I encountered an error during adjustment saying that the reference field is not set and I can't proceed further since the table is now locked. There's 2 options, to continue adjustment and to unlock the table. When I choose continue adjustment, it still lead to the same problem, so i choose to unlocked it thinking that I could be able to change it since there's a prompt saying that I might loose some data. Once I clicked on onlocked, then I it tells me that the adjustment is done. However, I found out that now my table was not editable. It's saying that it's not in the database.
Can this table be recovered without the lost of data? Please anyone, I need this help urgently. THanks you in advance.

Your DBAs might be able to help you.

  • Urgent Help is Needed for Database Installation Problems

How can we resolve the following database problems in Windows XP? Originally, we had Oracle 10.1.0.4.2, and we wanted to upgrade it to Oracle 10.2.0.1. -OyA specific ORACLE_HOME holds the binaries for a specific version of Oracle. You don't upgrade by simply installing a newer version of Oracle into the ORACLE_HOME of an older version. If you tried to do that you have probably irreversibly corrupted the original installation.
And there is no URGENT or ASAP here. We are all volunteers with regular jobs. If you have "urgent" support issues you need to open a Service Request with Oracle Support.

  • Why we need oracle database reboot to put database in  archivelog mode?

I know how to enable archivelog mode, but what is the reason that to enable archive log we need database restart. which process forces to do that.

Thanks a lot EdStevens for ur prompt response...I need something that satisfies my managers query.
If the question has originated with the PHB, then my flippant answer is even more relevant ...
PHB's are incapable of understanding the technical details, so I prefer to give them the 'executive summary':
"Because that's the way Oracle is written.  We can argue over the technical merits of such a requirement 'till the cows come home.  But at the end of the day, we have to shut down the database because the 'alter database archivelog' command will only succeed when the database is in mount (not open) mode.  Now, let's work out how we can achieve our objective of putting the database in archivelog mode with minimal and appropriately scheduled down time."
As for the actual down time, it's about as minimal as you can get.  How long does it take your database to complete a shutdown once the command is given?  How long does it take you to type "startup mount"?  How long does it take you to type "alter database archivelog"?  to type "alter database open;"?  For the database to complete the 'open' process?  You could even script it so as to eliminate the keyboard typing time.

  • Do we still need relational databases?

    Dears,
will this new in-memory technology reduce the need of a relational database?
There are also rumors about a column-based database... are we talking about the same product?
    Thanks,
    Federico Biavati

    Hi Vitali,
    2 things:
    1st
It is much more as SQL Ansi and the in-memory stuff.
    See the different DB vendors
    How they
    * handle lock escalation on their DB objects a
    * concurrency
    * high availability
    * reliable DB recovery and backups
This is a knowledge they had to buy from Sybase - SAP will not invent a new DB relational system
Sybase has a very small customer base wich may grow with SAP installations in the future.
But have in mind: Other DB vendors are technologically spoken more advanced (not only  Oracle)
    2nd:
Oracle Exadata is not vapor ware as HANA , you can buy since 2008 (first with HP servers now also on Sun systems)
and it's not only adressing in-memory but also intelligent prefetching of OS data blocks via massive parallel systems BEFORE they go into the DB buffer .
Think of IT DB staff: you need expirienced personell for it, not sure if SAP can move Oracle DB staff to Sybase staff
at their customer base (at least not in the U.S.
I think customers will force SAP also  to certify the Exadata machine also.
Best breed strategy may go for Exdata on Oracle and SAP  ERP/BW
    bye

Hi, I am looking for Oracle Database 10g for Mac OS 10.4 PowerPC. I need to run this software on a PowerBook G4. I would appreciate any download links or tips that can help.

  • Minimum Database Priviledes needed for Database Connection

What are the minimum DB Privileges I will need to do the following in JDev:
1 - Brows tables and packages via the Application Resources - Connections - Database view?
2 - Generate Business Components from Tables? (Query for Tables returns no values, or errors.)
I'm using JDev 11.1.1.1.0. connecting to an Oracle 10g database.
I can connect successfully but can't get table/view lists in the above scenarios.
I can query tables directly (select * from.....) via the SQL_Worksheet form and I receive context help (e.g. on table names).
Other connections to a local XE database works fine (CONNECT and RESOURCE privileges).

  • Need a Database Program

I am looking for a database program like MS Access. I see that even the Office 2008 for Mac does not over Access. What else is out there? I would really like to have some compatibility to go between platforms, but will take what I can get.
    Thanks in advance,

The FileMaker people have also now released a lighter weight DB program called Bento. If you need Access then you can use the database component of NeoOffice Aqua which is quite similar to Access. NeoOffice is a native implementation of Sun's Star Office and is much like Microsoft's Office for Windows (pre-2007.) NeoOffice is Open Source and free.
Another "free" relational database is MySQL or PostgreSQL. Both are available in free and commercial versions depending upon extensions. Both are originally Open Source. You will find them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
And, there's Panorama which has been around on the Mac for many years. It's a commercial product. I do not believe they've yet come out with a universal binary version.
And, last is Valentina also a commercial product.
