XI network sizing

Hi,
I am trying to find the optimum bandwidth required for connecting to XI server using the Integration Repository/Directory.
Can someone please help me with the network bandwidth sizing for XI.?
I have tried going through the various sizing guides for xi and the quick sizer tools but unable to find information on network sizing on XI.
Thanks and Regards,
Karan

Hi,
I am not trying to find out how robust is XI. I am trying to determine how much network bandwidth will be required per user to do development in XI. We are connecting to XI using WAN and for that purpose we need to estimate how much bandwidth will be required per user to do development.
Can anyone help me with this?
Regards,
Karan

  • Network sizing for SAP printing

    Dear all,
We are in the midst of sizing network bandwidth requirement for SAP implementation which involves some remote locations. Actually Iu2019ve gone through the documentation (Front-End Network Requirements for SAP Business Solutions), and found the way of calculating the network requirements based on number of users (C = N * D * X * 0.25 formula), however Iu2019m not sure if the formula does include the SAP printing bandwidth requirement. Appreciate if you can shed some lights on SAP printing network sizing guide or sort.
    Best regards

    Thanks Susanne,
Understand we need to rely on the information on how much the printing requirement is to come up with the estimation on SAP printing bandwidth requirement.
Perhaps you have some experience on the size of 1 page of SAP printlist (plain text) ? Is it safe to have assumption that 1 page of print list would have 20-30 KB in size? And ones with pictures/logos are 100-200KB in size?

  • SAP Portal Network Sizing.

    Hi Friends,
We are implementing SAP Portal for ESS/MSS.
We would like to know whether, we have required computer network resources or not.
How we can check whether we have enough bandwidth that SAP Portal would need.
Please advise how we can check existing network. And what are the values SAP recommand to have ?
    Thank you.
    Regards,
    Prashanth.R.G.

    Prashanth,
Portal sizing is based on SAPS. Based on the number of users, please use the Sap Quick Sizer tool and calculate the SAPS. You need to work with hardware vendors such as IBM, SUN, DELL, and HP to find out the best server platform that you can use for your requirements considering different metrics in to account such as Processor, Virtualization, OS, Memory, DB per CPU, High-Availability, Implementation cost, server consolidation ratio, hardware/software breakdown cost and etc.,
You can find some info at http://www.sizinglounge.com
Specific to the enterprise portal, you need to check several tuning parameters to fine-tune the performance, Most of these can be identified in SAP Going-Live GA, GO, and GV checks.
When you talk about bandwidth, you need to work with your network admin based on where your user base comes from? Intranet? Extranet? Internet? There are different tools available such as sniffers to do an end-to-end testing. Hope this helps.

  • Portal network sizing

    Hello everybody,
I want to present our EP7 in the internet. But I don't find any sizing informations for the network bandwidth only for hardware.
We'll have ~200 concurrent users, medium activity.
Is a 15 MBit line enough?
    Best regards,
    Manuel

    Hi Manuel,
it is of no concern if the content is static or dynamic. You have to enter the file size of the content that is sent to the client. In the case of images, css and js files its the size of the file. In case of servlet responses (/irj) its the transferred content size.
To have a clue about transferred file sizes, you can use a network sniffer like:
    PRTG or
Ethereal or search the web for HTTP Sniffer.

  • Doubts regarding WAN Network sizing formula parameters

    Hi
We have used the following SAP document - Front end requirements for SAP Business solutions
We have some doubts regarding the formula. Sometime we have the feeling it does not address very well issues as user's concurrency, WAN Optimization and contingency. However,  it might be only that we are not using correctly the formula, so we would like to confirm some information regarding the parameters.
    C = X * N * D * 0.25
    The parameters are as follows:
C: Bandwidth in kbps that is needed for the SAP GUI
X: Amount of data per dialog step in kilo bytes
N: Number of active users (independent of the number of sessions)
D: Average number of dialog steps per minute per user7
    Numerical factor: ~0.25 = 8 (kb/kilo bytes ) * 1.25 (protocol overhead) * 1/60 (min/s) * safety factor
1.58 (response time, peak load, different technologies)
The number of active user is the average number of concurrent users (from the total number of users) which are using the network? Therefore, we should calculate first the concurrent users number?
Does any body knows what is the reasoning behind the Numerical Factor and the safety factor? It is a contingency factor? It is related with a network bandwidth contingency?
    Has anyone apply WAN Optimization?
Has anyone apply any additional contingency measure additional to the safety factor?
    Kind regards
    Gonzalo Pérez-Prim

    Hi Gonzalo,
As you said, the number of active users is the mean number of concurrent users, since idle users don't normally need bandwidth.
I think that safety factor is an estimated number provided by SAP engineers to increase the final amount, just in case you have different issues that could lead to a lower network transmission rate. As it's a general estimation, please take into account that the particular issues of your network can have some influence in the speed calculation.
Please take into account that maybe you want to switch the option "slow network connection" in SAPGUI, just to decrease the ammount of traffic between frontends and server.
    Hope this helps

  • SAP Retail Network Architecture

    Hi,
We are implementing SAP Retail for a supermarket.  May I know if anyone has a network sizing tool to identify the minimum network bandwidth requirements for all stores?
    Site details are as follows:
    No. of stores = 150
Avg. network bandwidth = 128 kbps
    Avg. SKU/store = 46,000
    SKU/DC = 8000
    Total DC = 5
    Number of Vendors = 6
    Thanks and appreciate your response.
    Regards,
    Daniel

You should get in touch with your SAP Basis Consultant. He should be aware of.
Alternatively you can approach SAP Consulting Subsidary in your country or region.
SAP has a tool which helps in Sizing.

  • Voice clients per AP

    Hi Experts,
    I would like to know how many voice clients can be supported in a Cisco 3700 AP?  I have seen a document (Document ID:8103);
    Q. How many wireless IP telephony handsets are recommended per AP?
    A. IP telephony network sizing is essential to ensure that adequate bandwidth and resources are available to carry mission-critical voice traffic. In addition to the usual IP telephony design guidelines for sizing components, such as PSTN gateway ports, transcoders, WAN bandwidth, and so forth, also consider these 802.11b issues when sizing your wireless IP telephony network:
Number of 802.11b devices per AP: Cisco recommends that you have no more than 15 to 25
The number of 802.11b phones you can deploy per Layer-2 subnet or VLAN depends on these factors:
Use no more than seven G.711 or eight G.729 active calls per AP.

We want to integrate 2 systems by using iDoc across WAN. So far we know the iDoc volumes and average iDoc segments, for example 6000 SO iDoc/hour and 250 segments of each iDoc. My understanding is that we need to know the average iDoc segment size to performance network sizing.

  • Forms 9i sizing metrics/ network bandwith

I have a potential customer who are evaluating Forms 9i for their intranet. Their biggest concern is the size of the Forms deployed to the client compared to JSP pages and HTML/Javascript, the size of any java classes that would need to download to the client, on-going communication between the client and app server, and any Jinitiator programs that would need to be installed as all program applications are managed by local IT teams and not the end user.
I need some ballpark facts and figures on the size of Forms and their relative % reduction in footprint in comparison with previous releases of Forms and JSPs.
Also, I need to confirm what exactly other than a browser (the customer's corp standard is IE 5.0.1) has to preinstalled on an end user's PC.

    Hi Grant,
Thank you for the info thus far.
I've read through the capacity planning guide. It gives me a good indication of resource usage on the middle tier. However, what about the client?
I understand from what you have stated that the JAR files are cached once regardless of the JVM used. Is this true for JVM supplied with Internet Explorer 5.01? Will this 'older' version of the browser even have a JVM modern enough to cope with the demands of forms 9i? Or will I need JInitiator?
How big is Jinitiator if I do need to download it? 5mb, 10mb, 50mb?
What about the one off JAR file that will get cached? I heard a ball park of 8mb.
When I launch a medium form as a servlet, the capacity planning guide says approx 6.2mb per user. What is this 6.2mb? Is it an approximate .FMX file size, memory, or a combination of the two? Where is this 6.2mb allocated? Is this memory/swap space allocated on the servlet engine on the application server machine or is this 6.2mb downloaded/allocated on the client PC?
What for a typical form is downloaded to the client when I launch a Forms based application as a servlet? Is the entire Forms file downloaded after which there is only minimal traffic going back and forth between the client and middle tier. Or does the servlet act like a screen scraper (i.e., Citrix) and the already cached classes are used to render everything and the extend of the network traffic limited to rendering differences in screen appearance?
I understand that a Forms application is typically aimed for more complex interactive applications. However, if you have skills in both Web PLSQL (to render HTML and Javascript), Java and Forms, it would make sense to leverage those skills that would make you more productive. It is very quick to build a large number of screens in Forms - it would take longer coding from scratch with HTML/Javascript. The application we need to build is large in terms of the number of screens, but not too complex in terms of a demand for a high level of client side validation.
If the trade off in performance is small it would be prudent to develop in Forms if you could get the application built and live in a quarter of the man days. If the trade off is going to be significant then it would be more prudent to go down the HTML/Javascript or JSP route.
    I hope this makes sense.
    Cheers,
    John

  • Medium sized wireless network topography help.

    Hi.
I need to set up a wireless network for a three story vacation rental condominium complex. Each floor has 12 units for 36 in all. The idea is to give renters wireless access to the internet. My plan is to use an Airport Extreme to connect to the building's single cable modem and then use Airport Expresses strategically positioned around the complex to create a WDS. Will this work? Is it the best way to accomplish my goal? How many users could be connected at once?
    Thanks for the help.

The limitations with WDS is that you can only have 5 wi-fi routers total. There can only be one relay router between a main router and remote router.
What is a relay router and what is a remote? Look at this "diagram":
Main router <-> RouterA <-> RouterB
RouterA is a relay router because it acts as a relay station between Main and RouterB
    RouterB is a remote router.
And then check out this diagram:
    Main router <-> Router1
Router1 in this case is known as a remote router also even though there is no relay.
So, you can only have 5 routers total so the largest network you can have will be in the shape of a partial star. Look at this poor diagram:
    Main router <-> Router1 <-> Router2
    Main router <->RouterA <-> RouterB
In the above diagram, there is really only ONE main router (but due to limitations of using ASCII drawing to make parallel diagrams, this is why there looks like two main routers). Router 1 and 2 are shooting off on their own network trunk. Router A and B are also shooting off on their own network trunk. Router1 and RouterA both connect to the SAME main router.
Also don't forget: Airport Express can at best only handle 10 clients at a time. Airport Extreme can handle 50.
This should not be a problem if your Airports are scattered adequately.
Give all of this, it is possible, I think, to use Apple's routers to form your WDS system but of course as the other reader said, depends on the construction of your building and other interferences.
HINT ON HOW TO REMOTELY RESET WDS SYSTEM
And here's my hint on how to remotely reset a WDS system using Airport Utility. You always want to work backwards from where you are connecting. So for instance, if you are connecting from RouterB, rest Router 2, then 1, then the main, then A, then finally B. If you don't do it this way, you have to keep waiting for one router to be back online before you can reset the other routers.

  • I want a new and more powerful (non-Apple) wireless router but I still want to use my existing Time Capsule to continue with my Time Machine backups and I still need the Time Capsule's Network Attached Storage (NAS) features and capabilities

    THE SHORTER STORY
My goal is to successfully use my existing Time Capsule (TC) with a new and more powerful wireless router. I need a new and more powerful wireless router in order to reach a distant Denon a/v receiver that is physically located in a master bedroom some 50 feet away from my modem. I need to provide this Denon a/v receiver with an Internet connection so that it can obtain its firmware updates and I need to connect this Denon a/v receiver to my network in order to use its AirPlay feature. I believe l still need the TC's Network Attached Storage (NAS) features because I am not sure if the new wireless router will provide me with the NAS like features / capabilities I need to share files between my two Apple laptops with OS X 10.8.2. And I know that I absolutely need my TC's seamless integration with Apple's Time Machine (TM) application in order to continue to make effortless backups of my two Apple laptops. To my knowledge nothing works with TM like Apple's TC. I also need the hard disk storage space built into the TC.
I cannot use a long wired Ethernet cable connection in this apartment and I cannot use power-line adapters. I have read that wireless range extenders and repeaters are difficult to successfully set-up and that they will reduce data speeds, especially so when incorrectly set-up. I cannot relocate my modem and/or primary base station wireless router.
In short, I want to use my TC with my new and more powerful wireless router. I need to stop using the TC to connect to the modem. However, I still need the TC for seamless TM backups. I also need to use the TC's built in hard drive for storage. And I may still need the TC's NAS capabilities to share files wirelessly between laptops because I am assuming the new wireless router will not provide NAS capabilities for OS X 10.8.2 (products like this/non-Apple products rarely seem to work with OS X 10.8.2/Macs to provide NAS features and capabilities). Finally, I want to continue to use my Apple laptop and AirPlay to wirelessly access and play my iTunes music collection stored on the TC's hard drive. I also want to continue to use my Apple laptop, AirPlay and Apple TV to wirelessly watch movies and TV shows stored on the additional external hard drive connected to the TC via USB. Can someone please advise on how to set-up my new Asus wireless router with my existing TC in such a way to accomplish all of this?
What is the best configuration or set-up to accomplish my above goals?
Thank you in advance for your assistance!!!
    THE FULL STORY
I live in an apartment building where my existing Time Capsule (TC) is located in my living room and serves many purposes. Specially, my TC is at least all of the following:
    (1) Wi-Fi router connected to Comcast Internet service via Motorola SB6121 cable modem - currently the TC is the Wi-Fi base station that connects to the modem and has the gateway address to the Internet. The TC now provides the DHCP service for the Wi-Fi network.
    (2) Wireless router providing Internet and Wi-Fi network access to several Wi-Fi clients - two Apple laptop computers, an iPod touch, an iPad and an iPhone all connect wirelessly to the Internet via the TC.
    (3) Wired Ethernet router providing Internet and Wi-Fi network access to three different devices - a Panasonic TV, LG Blu-Ray player and an Apple TV each use one of the three LAN ports on the back of the TC to gain access to the Internet.
    (4) Primary base station in my attempt to extend my wireless network to a distant (located far away) Denon a/v receiver requiring a wired Ethernet connection - In addition to the TC, which is my primary base station, I am also using a second extended Wi-Fi base station (a Netgear branded product) to wirelessly extend my WiFi network to a Denon receiver located in the master bedroom and requiring a wired Ethernet connection. I cannot use a wired Ethernet connection to continuously travel from the living room to the master bedroom. The distance is too great as I cannot effectively hide the Ethernet cable in this apartment.
    (5) Time Machine (TM) backup facilitator - I use my TC to wirelessly back-up two Apple laptops using Apple's Time Machine (TM) application. However, I ran out of storage space on my TC and therefore added external storage to it. Specifically, I added an external hard drive to my TC via the USB port on the back of the TC. I now use this added external hard drive connected to the TC via USB as the destination storage drive for my TM back-ups. I have partitioned the added external hard drive, and each of the several partitions all have enough storage space (e.g., each of the two partitions used by TM are sized at three times the hard drive space of each laptop, etc.). Everything works flawlessly.
    (6) Network Attached Storage (NAS) - In addition to using the TC's Network Attached Storage (NAS) capabilities to wirelessly back-up two Apple laptops via TM, I also store other additional files on both (A) the hard drive built into the TC and (B) the additional external hard drive connected to the TC via USB (there are additional separate partitions on this drive for these other additional and non-TM backup files).
I use the TC's NAS feature with my Apple laptop and AirPlay to wirelessly access and play my iTunes music collection stored on the TC's hard drive. I also use my Apple laptop, AirPlay and Apple TV to wirelessly watch movies and TV shows stored on the additional external hard drive connected to the TC via USB. Again, everything works wirelessly and flawlessly. (Note: the Apple TV is connected to the network via Ethernet and a LAN port on the back of the TC).
The issue I am having is when I try to listen to music via Apple's AirPlay in the master bedroom. This master bedroom is located at a distance of two rooms away from the TC's current location in the living room, which is a distance of about 50 feet. This apartment has a long rectangular floor plan where each room is connected to the next in a straight line. In order to use AirPlay in the master bedroom I am using a second extended Wi-Fi base station (a Netgear branded product) to wirelessly extend my WiFi network to a Denon receiver located in the master bedroom and requiring a wired Ethernet connection. This additional base station connects wirelessly to the WiFi network provided by my TC and then gives my Denon receiver the wired Ethernet connection it needs to use AirPlay. I have tried moving my iTunes music directly onto my laptop's hard drive, and then I used AirPlay on this same laptop to connect to the Denon receiver. I always get a successful connection and the song plays, but the problem is that the connection inevitably drops.
I live in an apartment building and all of the many wireless routers in this building create a great deal of WiFi interference on both the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz bands. I have tried connecting the Netgear product to each the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, but neither band can successfully maintain a wireless connection between the TC and the Netgear product. I also attempted to maintain a wireless connection to an iPod touch using the 2.4 GHz band and AirPlay on this iPod touch to play music on the Denon receiver. Again, I was able to establish a connection and successfully play music, but after a few minutes the connection dropped and the music stopped playing. I therefore have concluded that I have a poor wireless connection in the master bedroom. I can establish a connection, but it is intermittent with frequent drops. I have verified this with both laptops by working in the master bedroom for an entire day on both laptops. The Internet connection in this master bedroom proved to drop out frequently - about once an hour with the laptops. The wireless connection and the frequency of its dropout are far worse with the iPod touch and an iPhone.
I cannot relocate the TC. Also, this is an apartment and I therefore cannot extend the range of my network with Ethernet cable (I cannot drill through walls/ceilings, etc.). It is an old building with antiquated wiring and power-line adapters are not likely to function properly, nor can I spare the direct power outlet required with a power-line adapter. I simply need every outlet I can get and cannot afford to block any direct outlet.
My solution is to use a more powerful wireless router. I found the ASUS RT-AC66U Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router which will likely provide a better connection to my wireless Internet in the master bedroom than the TC. The 802.11ac band of this Asus wireless router is totally useless to me, but based on what I have read I believe this router will provide a stronger connection at greater distances then my TC. And I will be ready for 802.11ac when it becomes more widely available.
However, I still need to maintain the TC's ability to work seamlessly with TM to backup my two laptops. Also, I doubt the new Asus router will provide OS X 10.8.2 with NAS like features and capabilities. Therefore, I still would like to use the TC's NAS capabilities to share files on my network wirelessly assuming the Asus wireless router fails to provide this feature. I need a new and more powerful wireless router, but I need to maintain the TC's NAS features and seamless integration with TM. Can someone advise on how to set-up my existing TC with this new Asus wireless router in such a way to accomplish all of this?

In regards to a Plan B, I hear ya brother. I am already on what feels like Plan Z. Getting WiFi to a far off room in an apartment building crowded with WiFi routers is a major pain.
I am basing my thoughts on the potential of a new and more powerful router reaching the far off master bedroom based on positive reviews on cnet.com, pcmag.com and pcworld.com. All 3 of these web sites have reviewed the Asus RT-AC66U 802.11AC wireless router as well as its virtual twin cousin 802.11n router. What impressed me is that all 3 sites rated this router #1 overall in terms of both range and speed (in both the 802.11n and 802.11AC flavors). They tested the router in real world scenarios where the router needed to compete with a lot of other wireless routers. One of the sites even buried this Asus router in a media room with thick walls and inside a media cabinet. This Asus router should be able to serve my 2.4 GHz band wireless clients (iPod Touch and iPhone 4) with a 2.4GHz Wireless-N band offering some 50 feet of dependable range and a 60 Mbps throughput at that range. I am hoping that works, but it's borderline for my master bedroom. My 5 GHz wireless clients (laptops) will enjoy a 5GHz Wireless-N band offering 150 feet of range and a 200 Mbps throughput at that range. I have no idea what most of that stuff means, but I did also read that Asus could reach 300 feet and I got really excited. My mileage may vary of course and I'm sure I'm making some mistakes in my interpretation of their data. However, my Winter 2009 Time Capsule was rated by cnet.com to deliver real world performance of less than that, and 802.11AC may or may not be useful to me someday. But when this Asus arrives and provides anything other than an excellent and consistent wireless signal without drops in the master bedroom it's going right back!
Your solution sounds great, but I have some questions. I'm using OS X 10.8.2 and Airport Utility (version 6.1 610.31) and on its third tab labeled "Wireless" the top option enables you to set "Network Mode" to either:
    Create a wireless network
    Extend a wireless network
    Off
Given your advice to "Turn off the wireless on the TC," should I set Network Mode to Off? Sorry, I'm clueless in regards to how to turn off the wireless on the TC any other way. Can you provide specific steps on how to turn off the wireless on the TC? If what I wrote is correct then what should the rest of this Wireless tab look like, or perhaps it is irrelevant when wireless is off?
Next, what do you mean by "Configure the TC in Bridge Mode?" Under Airports Utility's fourth tab labeled "Network" the top option "Router Mode" allows for either:
    DHCP and Nat
    DHCP Only
    Off (Bridge Mode)
Is your advice to Configure the TC in Bridge Mode as simple as setting Router Mode to Off (Bridge Mode)? If yes, then what should the rest of this "Network" tab look like? Anything else involved in configuring the TC in Bridge Mode or is it really as simple as setting the Router Mode to "Off (Bridge Mode)"?
How about the other tabs in Airport Utility, can they all stay as is assuming I use the same network name and password for the new Asus wireless router? Or do I need to make any other changes to the TC via Airport Utility?
Finally, in regards to your Plan B suggestion. I agree. But do you have a Plan B for me? I would greatly appreciate any alternative you could provide. Specifically, if you needed a TC's Internet connection to reach a far off corner of your home how would you do it? In the master bedroom I need both a wired Ethernet connection for the Denon a/v receiver and wireless Internet connection for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

I actually like exactly one power-line adapter, which is the D-Link DHP-540 PowerLine AV 500 4-Port Gigabit Switch. This D-Link power-line adapter plugs into your wall outlet with a normal sized plug (regular standard power cord much like any other electronic device) instead of all of the other recommended power-line adapters that not only use at least one wall outlet but also often block the second outlet. You cannot use a power strip with a power-line adapter which is very impractical for me. And everything about my home is strange and upside down. The wiring here is a disaster and I don't have faith in its ability to carry Internet access from the living room to the master bedroom. And this D-Link power-line adapter costs $90 each and I need at least two to make the connection to the Denon A/V receiver. So, $180 on this solution and I still don't have a dependable drop free wireless connection in the master bedroom. The Denon might get its Ethernet Internet connection from the power-line adapter, but if I want to use an iPhone 4 or iPod Touch to stream AirPlay music to the Denon wirelessly (Pandora/iTunes, etc.) from the master bedroom the wireless connection will not be stable in there and I've already spent $190 on just the two power-line adapters needed.
Extenders / Repeaters / Wirelessly Extending the Wireless Network
I have also read great things about the Amped Wireless High Power Wireless-N 600mW Gigabit Dual Band Range Extender (Repeater) SR20000G and the My Net Wi-Fi Range Extender. The former is very powerful and the latter is easier to install. Both cost about $150 ish so similar to a new Asus router. However, everything I read about Range Extenders points to them not being very effective for a far off corner of your house wherein it's apparently hard to place the range extender in the sweet spot where it both gets a strong enough signal to actually effectively extend the wireless signal and otherwise does not reduce network throughput speeds to unacceptable speeds.
Creating a Roaming Network By Hard Wiring with Ethernet Cable - Wife Would Say, "**** No!"
Even Apple seems to warn against wirelessly extending your network (see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4145#) and otherwise strongly recommends a roaming network where Ethernet cable is used to connect two wireless base stations. However, I am in an apartment where stringing together two wireless base stations with Ethernet cable would have an extremely low wife acceptance factor (WAF). I cannot (both contractually and from a skill prospective) hide Ethernet wire in the walls or ceiling. And having visible Ethernet cable running from room-to-room would be unacceptable, especially to the wife.
So what is left? Do you have a Plan B for me? Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Print Sizing and Quality Issues

When I print PDF documents I have issues with sizing and quality. I only have this issue with my Mac. Windows prints the files as they should be. I've tried two different printers, both over network. It doesn't matter whether I am in Adobe or in a browser. Basically it oversizes the documents and cuts off the edges. The quality on images and logos is severly degraded. This probelm existed in Lion and now in Mountain Lion. Any help?

What we need are the clip properties & sequence settings in Final Cut Express.  Your screenshot is from a Finder window.
It would appear you have a clip with nonstandard frame size (1366x768) in an H.264 file.  FCE cannot edit this material.  FCE is limited to specific codecs and frame sizes.  You need to convert your clip to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec. If it's highdef widescreen then convert it to QT/AIC 1920x1080i.  Try using MPEG Streamclip to convert the source clip.
You also need to be using a matching Easy Setup in Final Cut Express.  If your source media file is QT/AIC 1920x1080i then you should select the AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60 Easy Setup in FCE -AND- then create a new sequence before importing your clip into FCE and placing it in your sequence (timeline)

  • How to Move Local Users to Network Domain Users

Before you follow these instructions...... I'm a rank amateur so I'd check to see if the smart kids have corrected my errors or improved on the method in the replies below
The reason for the post is I have good and established local user accounts on all the computers and moving them to domain controlled accounts is the one topic I could not find a script to follow that worked for my low level of knowledge of OS X.
Let me first explain my setup and needs. I'm replacing a Windows Home Server (WHS) with the Mac Mini Server. My goal was to have the Mac Mini as the server holding all our photos, data, etc. and running a user account to run the family iTunes account to feed the Apple TV and be the backup / sync point for a family sized set of iPod Touches, iPads and iPhones. I want to be able to log into each mac and have the same information setting, links, etc........ basically walk around the house, find any mac shaped device not used by someone else, log in and carry on where I was before -  with the MacBook Air having a portable account so it can come travelling with us.
    The key hardware is...
Mac Mini Server running Snow Leopard 10.6.8
    Apple TV
    2 x iMac Running Lion 10.7.1 [upgraded from 10.6.8]
MacBook Air running Lion 10.7.1 [upgraded from 10.6.8]
Normal stuff like wifi, hubs and a router doing the DHCP (and for me reserving IP addresses based on the 'MAC Address' to save me having to manually configure all the IP addresses)
Key Resources I used as I learnt how to do this; to level set you all, I'm a relative newcomer to OS X having had a Windows life with Linux for fun, so i'm not a mac or IT specialist but like to play around.
Apple's podcast series 'Apple Quick Tour of Leopard Server'  - this is great, it informed me and kept me motivated through all the bah moments, all 33 episodes and it's in the iTunes store as a podcast.
The book 'Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server For Dummies' - I bought this about half way through the whole process and wish i'd bought it earlier, my reccomendation would be get the Kindle version so you can search it for advice.
The excellent information on DNS from Hoffman Labs http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1436
The video 'Setting up a primary DNS zone.....' from Lynda.com on youtube  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOEgQY9oFK4
The Series of PDF document on Snow Leopard Server from Apple http://support.apple.com/manuals#mac%20os%20x%20server%20v10.6
And finally this excellent post from Joe Ferrante which was the core of what I used http://joeferrante.net/how-to-migrate-local-user-account-to-network-user-account -with-networked-home-folder-on-snow-leopard-server/
    Right off we go....
Setting up the Server [this took me 6 goes to get it right as I learnt a little each time].
So i'm not going to go through this step by step because it in the 'dummies' book and the videos from Apple above and those will be better than anything I write but here's my details/advice.
I split the primary disc into 2 partitions using disk utility so I could reformat the operating system without moving my data.
100GB for the OS X system
    400GB for user data
Install OS X from the DVD, press the buttons based on your desires but stop at the bit about naming you computer titled Network Names
READ UP ON DNS  - this one of the reason I had so many goes as it was the 1st time i've set up a server like this using DNS and guessing didn't get me there.
If you don't have one buy a domain name for your network it make it much easier in the long run & is $10 well spent
The name needs to be [the computer name].[your domain name].[com or net or org, etc]
So if you want you computer to be called fred and you bought or have the domain location.com enter fred.location.com in the primary DNS name box
This shoud automatically put fred in the computer name box.
Follow along with the set up guide to finish
After you have finished the set up test the DNS with NSLOOKUP in a terminal window
nslookup fred.location.com    in my example and you should get the IP
Add your servers IP address to the list of DNS servers in network preferences on the client mac.
Bind [link] the client computers to the server in Accounts on the client computer - I used the 'dummies' book for this but there's lots of data on the web.
Clean up the user profile on the client to reduce the size of the Home folder as much as possible or the data transfer is loooooooonnnnng - i also connect the iMac on a cable rather than wifi to speed it up.
Read Joe's post http://joeferrante.net/how-to-migrate-local-user-account-to-network-user-account -with-networked-home-folder-on-snow-leopard-server/ and follow along.useful info I learnt somewhere - to get the paths to the folders correct in the terminal window go to the folder in Finder and then drag it to the terminal window and let go - this will put the correct link in the instruction.
You now need to be on a terminal window on your server, with a finder window open and logged into the client as the user you are moving
THE CLIENT COMPUTER NEEDS TO BE LOGGED OUT or logged in as a different user than the one you're trying to move.
so when you're at the right point - type sudo cp -R then hit the space bar, drag the existing user folder onto the finder window, add the /* and hit space then find the users folder on the server and drag that onto the terminal window to complete the instruction.
Hit enter and wait a while assuming it starts ok - i used network traffic on the Activity Monitor utility to check if it was working.
If you got this far and it all worked - login to the profle you moved on any computer linked to the server or the server but not the original client computer to see if it worked and all your setting and data are intact and then delete the profile off the original client if it was ok [archiving the home directory took ages for me].
As you can probably guess most of this was good learning for me and it worked successfully for me in the end, moving all my history, saved password, etc, etc without any problems.
Hope this helps other in the same situation & feel free to expand or correct this if I've missed anything.
    Ed

    Hi,
I was unable to access the Joe Ferrante information (it appears to now requrie a password and was not able to determine how a username and password were assigned)  Would you happen to have a copy of the post that you refer to above?
I am still at the early stages of this process but am hoping that the steps you refer to are going to get me where I want to be.  Your stated end goal is where I hope to get to.
    Thanks,
    Sean

  • Share itunes library between two comp. not on a network

I have a mac and a large itunes library, but I spend a lot of time at my boyfriend's place and he has a windows with XP. So I was wondering is there anyway to share my library over the internet to his computer. He has dsl and I am on broadband, so I thought I could dial into his network, but he doesn't have a fixed IP address. Any ideas?

If he doesnt have a fized IP adress, then you cant, but here are some other solutions
If you have an iPod, then I can easily instruct you on how you can transfer the files.
    If not, then...
For more inexpensive solution (recommended), burn up to 750 MB of files onto each blank CD (which you can buy cheap at any computer/ electronic store) saving the files on the CD's as a data disk at prompt. Use as many CD's as needed.
For expensive solution. Buy an external Hard Drive (price varies based on HD sized) and connect it to your Mac via firewire/ USB (whatever type of chord that comes with your external HD). Then transfer all the files you want to transfer into the HD. Then bring the HD to his XP and connect again. Then upload the files onto his XP.
PS: An external HD can be useful later if you want back up all your files on both of the computers in the event of a crash...
