Xine often doesn't exit, giving a perpetual black screen

Hi,
I'm having a problem with Xine. Often times when it's supposed to exit (either by command or when the file is done) the process lingers and the screen stays black. If I started it from a terminal I have to do ctrl-c to get it to close and give me back my desktop. Otherwise, I have to alt-F2 to another VT and close it.
When it's in this state, alt tabbing doesn't even work. It shows the window list, but no matter what app you select, the screen stays black.
Googling doesn't really reveal anything. Anybody got an idea?

I use KDE and whether or not I use it's compositing option doesn't matter. I also use the default skin.

  • Windows 8.1 doesn't start after update. BLACK SCREEN AFTER LOGIN

Before all, sorry my english, I'm brazilian and don't found the solution on the brazilian version of HP website.
After I did the updates, the system ask to restart the notebook, so I did it. And now, when I do the login, after the password page, the Windows doesn't starts. Just a Black Screen appears.
I can't open the right side window to acces the configurations, and this laptop doesn't have a battery to take out and put in again.
I had already restore the system.
So, I use my laptop to work, and it has only 4 days of use.
     I need help! Thanks!

    Hi,
    Run through the following procedure.
Boot the computer normally and log-in.
At the black screen, hold down the ctrl and alt keys and press delete.
    Select Task Manager.
Click on File and select Run new task.
Type cmd.exe - also enter a tick in the box for 'Create this task with administrative privileges' - and click Ok.
Type in the following command ( including spaces ) and hit enter.
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
This will take a while to complete, but when it’s finished, restart the notebook.
If the screen is still black after you log-in, once again, hold down the ctrl and alt keys and press delete.
    Select Task Manager.
Click on File and select Run new task.
Type cmd.exe - also enter a tick in the box for 'Create this task with administrative privileges' - and click Ok.
Type in the following command ( there's a space between sfc and the / ) and hit enter.
    Sfc /scannow
When the scan has finished, check that the result is ‘No integrity violations’, then type exit and hit enter.
    Restart the notebook again.
    Any change?
    Regards,

At startup hold down the Option/Alt key and from the screen that comes up select your OS X partition to start the computer from. Then use the Boot Camp Assistant app to Remove Windows and the partition you reated for it and it will Automatically place the space you allocated for the Windows install back into the OS X partition.
    NOTE:
Do NOT use Disk Utility to erase the partition that was created for the Windows install. Use the Boot Camp Assistant app again to do that.

  • My iphone 4s is giving me a black screen.

My iphone 4s has given me a black screen. It has a full charge, is still receiving texts, calls, etc. but I cannot use the screen at all.  I've tried to unlock the screen by swiping and trying to push buttons from memory, but it is not responding.  I have tried the hard reset (power button + home button), and it is not working.  I cannot get it to power off, and it won't connect to itunes, because the screen is locked. It has done this before, but the hard reset worked.  This time it's not working.   It has not gotten wet, not been dropped, no exterior damage at all.  It's not overheating, never had a "jumpy" screen.  None of the other problems posted seem to have the same problems I'm having.  If someone could help me out, that would be great!  Would love to not have to drive the 2 hours to the apple store.  Thanks!

    Hi nikkiyoung,
If the reset is not helping, you may need to try the recovery mode.

    5. If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more aboutrestoring iOS software.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
    6. If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.
If you can't update or restore your iOS device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
Note you will want a backup as, "Recovery mode erases your device and restores it".

I have an iphone 4g and i am having problems with it locking up at times.  It will lock up and give me a blank screen.  When I took it to my local AT&T store they advised me to update it.  I am using the version 4.3.3 and I have tried to sync to Itunes, but have been unsuccessful.  I have not been able to update it at all.  When I plug in my phone to the computer, it will not sync at all.  Any suggestions?

Oh boy! Acting kind of weird seems to be an understatement, aquaequus!
What type of troubleshooting were we able to do with you? I want to make sure that we can get some sort of resolution for this problem.
It is quite possible the battery door may get your phone in working order again. I'm not sure if the store has it in stock, but it is available in our warehouse for $14.99 which can be ordered via customer service.

  • Tecra A8 doesn't boot - I get a black screen

When my TECRA A8 starts I get a black screen (Invalid Boot.INI file Booting from c:\Windows).
    Why is this happening?
Updating the BIOS did not solve it.

    Hi!
I think a BIOS update cant solve this problem because there is something wrong with the Windows installation and the BIOS has nothing to do with this. So dont mix these different things.
In your case I would use the Toshiba recovery disk to reinstall Windows. This should solve the problem because the disk contains the factory settings. After this you should be able to boot into Windows again.
    Bye

I so tried to connect it but itunes didn't recognized it. I tried several times, but it was useless : the black screen was still present and itunes didn't react.
Here is my problem, so what should I do, I wait your advices...

  • Xinit randomly doesn't start [solved]

Recently I ran into a strange problem with xinit;  unfortunately there's not much I can say about it.  Basically, when I try to start X with xinit/startx, my laptop just hangs on a black screen.  I can't change ttys, magic Alt-SysRec keys don't work.  I am forced to hard reset.  This happens randomly; after a few times, xinit will proceed normally.  Needless to say, this process is tedious and risky (I'm afraid of file system corruption due to the hard reset).  I have nothing to go on to fix or diagnose this problem.  Any ideas?
For what it's worth, some information that may or may not help diagnose the problem.  My .xinitrc:
    #!/bin/sh

I'm also seeing the cursor appear, though not always.  Usually it's a black screen, but sometimes the cursor shows up and is responsive for a moment or so before freezing.  This time, I had to try about 5 or 6 times before X would start properly.
Here's my journalctl for one of the failed session; it doesn't seem to show any problems, but I'm shooting in the dark at this point

  • Print to pdf often doesn't work with multiple pages?

When I try to print to pdf, it often doesn't work right.
I can select, for example, multiple Excel worksheets to print. It looks fine with 4 pages in Preview, but when I select save as .pdf, it only prints 2 of the 4 pages, and it prints those in 2 separate documents rather than a single .pdf document with multiple pages.
Is there a way to do this? Is this an Apple error or Microsoft error? Since it looks fine in Preview, my guess it is an Apple error?
    Mark

It sounds like this is the problem with the way Apple handles multiple orientations in a pdf document. You can use Acrobat to print the files - it handles multiple orientations correctly. There was a previous thread on this:

  • Firefox 3.6.10 in Ubuntu 10.04 recently became slow and often doesn't find websites.

Firefox 3.6.10 in Ubuntu 10.04 recently became very slow and often doesn't find websites, especially those in My Yahoo, whereas Chromium works fine. When searching for a website, a dialog finally pops up saying "Server not found" "Firefox can't find server at finance.yahoo.com" When searching for, say, M&T Bank, Firefox says "looking up dnssearch.rr.com" My Internet Service Provider" is Time Warner's Road Runner. I followed the directions for Firefox not finding some websites by changing my connection setting to "no proxy", by disabling IPv6 and DNS prefetching to no avail. I uninstalled Firefox and then re-installed it - no change. I went to Tools > clear recent history, but the latter was shaded and unclickable.

You can try "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults" on the [[Safe mode]] start window.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).<br />
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.<br />
See [[Basic Troubleshooting#Make_a_new_profile|Basic Troubleshooting&#58; Make a new profile]]
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox

  • ALSA often doesn't produce sound anymore after suspend

    Hi,
For some years this has been fine and pulseaudio worked fine after waking up from suspend.
But for about one or two month it more and more often doesn't. After waking up from suspend I just don't hear sound anymore. I can't find any error message anywhere, just that it doesn't output sound anymore. Killing it with "pulseaudio -k" or "pkill pulseaudio" or "pkill -9 pulseaudio" doesn't solve it. But "telinit 1", waiting until pulseaudio is dead and then "telinit 5" solves it so it is definitely not my sound driver.
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio (rev 05)
Any ideas how I can find out what's wrong?
Last edited by Cdh (2012-05-10 19:48:45)

Maybe the power saving for my sound chip triggered the problem. I had this in my startup config:
    echo 1 > /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save
I have removed it and hadn't had that problem so far. If it doesn't happen in the next time I'll mark this as solved. :-/
    EDIT:
Nope, it didn't help. Today after waking up from suspend it didn't output any sound although everything seemed fine.
This time I tried transferring the sound over the network with pulseaudio. That worked.
Then I killed everything and even went to init 1. But there not even mplayer -ao alsa worked and I had to reboot to get my sound back. So, not pulseaudio's fault, but alsa doesn't work right.

I am not a computer savy person.  I just need to plug in and have the machine do what it should do.
Not a problem, but that indicates you have a lot to learn.
File extensions like mpeg, mp4., avi, wmv, etc. are just wrappers. It is like a box the audio or video content is placed inside. The audio and video content must be encoded with a codec before it is placed in the box. There are thousands of codecs. Not all are installed on your Mac. You must have the same codec installed that encoded the video in order to play it. So, while Quicktime does support mpeg wrapper, it may not have the codecs to decode the internal video.
Some programs have lots of the codecs available to them, like VLC, Niceplayer, MPlayerX, etc.
You can also get "plug-ins" for Quicktime that add codecs to Quicktime, like Perian. Although it is no longer being developed, Perian still works well.
Why is it so difficult? Probably because they are always working on ways to compress the video to get better playback.

  • Firefox 7.0.1 doesn't exit completely on XP

On my XP system, when I exit Firefox 7.0.1, it doesn't exit completely. It is removed from the list of Applications shown in Task Manager, but not the list of Processes. If I try to restart it, it says it is already running and won't start up until I stop the firefox.exe process via Task Manager. This does not happen on my Windows 7 system. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox.

Reinstalling Firefox would do nothing for that. There are some extensions that can interfere. The main thing you can do is to close Firefox via file > Exit, or "Firefox" button > Exit -- it won't eliminate the problem, you may still have to terminate from the "Processes" tab of the WTM, but it will reduce need to. Closing Firefox with the "X" in the upper-right just closes the Windows like "Ctrl+Shift+W" but it does not necessarily close Firefox when there are subtasks running.
A lot of the time you probably simply want to close firefox and restart it again and for that the is an extension that puts that process into automatic pilot.
