Xkcd+alt-text in a pdf?

I would love to see some kind of tool, a script that download every xkcd comic and the alt text and put them in a pdf file. It would be great to print and put on the can for everyone to read.
Anybody of you guys that knows of a script that does this? Or are willing to create one?

whacath wrote:But "putting more then one comic on one page" doesnt  seem to work with xkcd comics
It works, but since most images are too large, reportlab places only one image per page. Use --scale option to decrease sizes of images.
moljac024 wrote:Wouldn't it better if the alt-text was below the image, not above it?
Done.
Updated the script.
1) Added --margin-{left,right,top,bottom} options to specify margins (in inches) when using reportlab
2) Added an ability to output comics to a HTML-file
3) Added --title-font-size and --alt-font-size options (guess what they do )
4) --scale option renamed into --image-scale
Output to HTML currently doesn't support image scaling to remove the dependence on python-imaging when using this mode.

  • Tags, alt text, and PDF accessibility

I'm thoroughly confused. I just finished the layout for a 176-page book in ID and I'm trying to tag the book for PDF accessibility. I read that it's better to tag in ID before you export to PDF. My problem is, I have no idea what I'm supposed to do or how to do it, and everything I'm reading is confusing me even more. I'm getting nowhere.
I'm not expecting a full course on this, but can someone please answer a few questions to give me a kick start (I may even ask the wrong questions). 1.) How do you add alt text to graphics in ID, or Acrobat?  2.) How do you add a tag in ID. I mean, I can add a tag but I don't know where or why I'm adding it.  3.) How do you manually tag a file in Acrobat 9 Pro or edit the auto tagging once it's done?
I'm using the most recent versions of ID and Acrobat Pro, and the most recent version of Mac OSX.
    Thank you.

I too have been trying to figure this out and have followed the steps
to add alt text to InDesign before exportign to PDF. I just can't see the alt text in either PDF  or in a browser displaying thee PDF fiel - I  know the tagged text is there because when I open
the "touch up Reading order" dialog in the
accesibility tab of Acrobat - the image displays with the appropriate  Alt text. I' checked the accessibility otpion in the browser as well [expand all alt text for images] but I still don't see the alt text when I mouse over teh image - what am I missign here?

  • Alt text doesn't convert from PPT to PDF

We're trying to create accessible PDFs (and have done so in the past). Two different people are trying -- one gets no alt text in the PDF, and the other gets single image alt text, but no alt text on grouped items. Any suggestions?

How is the conversion being done? What versions of PPT, Acrobat, and OS in both cases? The answer probably lies in the area of compatibility or procedure.

  • Large alt text for pdf images

I'm trying to include alt text for my pdf images but the text is over the character limit.  Is there any way to include longer alt text (for example through the use of an external file and a longdesc tag) in a pdf, or am I basically stuck with the character limit no matter what I do?

Does anybody at Mozilla read this or is it just for venting frustrations?
Alt-text is NOT just for when the image can't be displayed. For instance, in my work I use a particular kind of colour palette. It used to be that when I hovered over the little square showing the colour, that the colour number would appear. It's the ONLY way to know what colour you're dealing with, in this case.
This used to be available in Firefox, but suddently it disappeared. This is forcing me to use Safari, which has this feature. But I prefer to work with Firefox.
    This is very frustrating!!!

  • Maintaining image Alt Text from Word to Postscript to PDF

Is there any way to create a postscript file from Word 2007 that includes alt text on the images when distilled as a PDF?
I have Word 2007 files with alt text on the images. If I create a postscript file (using the print to file method on the Adobe postscript printer driver) and then distill it, the alt text is missing on the images in the PDF.

Thanks for the reply. That's what I was afraid of.
So here's the other part of this question: I have an automated process working to create PDFs using supported postscript method that I mentioned above. Now, I have a new requirement to include alt text with those PDFs. The only way I have been able to get that to work is with the PDFMaker functionality in Word. I have been able to automate it, but automating PDFMaker is not supported or recommended by Adobe. And I have found PDFMaker to be flaky, even outside the automation.
So, is there no supported way to automate the creation of PDFs from Word with alt text?

  • ALT text not appearing in PDF for EPS files

    Hi,
I have a created a document in InDesign CS5.5 which has images and text. the document should be accessibility complaint.
The document has images which are in PSD, tiff, eps and PNG files. I have applied the Alt text for each images.
After I export the document as PDF, when I mouse over the images, the Alt text is appearing for all the image formats except EPS file format. But Acrobat reads the Alt text for the image.
I am wondering why the Acrobat is not showing the ALT text for EPS file formats when i mouse over the image.
Is anyone facing the same problem? should I do anything in the settings?
    please help.
    Regards
    Ramji V K

The EPS image is not created in photoshop. the image is created in Illustrator.
Also, what do you mean by Single image? can you please explain a bit more about that?
    Thanks.

  • How to invoke alt-text for images in a PDF file by Automation

    Hi,
    Can any one help me?
How to invoke Alt-text for Images in a PDF file using script?
    Thanks for looking into this.
    Regards,
    Sudhakar

What do you mean "invoke" alt-text?  If Alt-text is there, then it will be presented to a screen reader.

  • Accessible pdf alt text read twice by on-screen reader

We are working on a math text book. We are currently creating an accessible pdf in addition to a text book for people who are visually impaired. We have ordered our text such that the on-screen reader reads the pages in the correct order and have tagged sections appropriately. However, some paragraphs contain several symbols that the on-screen reader cannot comprehend and for those we have made figures and inserted alt text that literally explains the equations. The problem is that the on-screen reader will first read the alt text but then will proceed to read the text itself that we are trying to replace. Thus many paragraphs are read twice. Please advise.

    Hi,
    Alternate Descriptions:
PDF documents may be enhanced by providing alternate descriptions for images, formulas, or other items that do not translate naturally into text.
But, you have content that does translate naturally into text. So, you get the alternate text entry and the content that is naturally renderable.
Consider use Replacement Text (Actual Text) or, when appropriate for abbreviations/acronyms, Expansion Text.
However, if the characters are naturally renderable, there is no need for any of these.
Do apply the PDF element for "formula" to the equation content.
Only use alternate text descriptions for image/graphic objects present in the PDF.
Avoid having other tagged content being associated with a child tag of a tag that has alternate or actual applied.
You may find having a copy of ISO 32000-1:2008 available helpful.
Obtain a free version oF ISO 32000-1.

  • PDF alt text displays as a roll over

When I generate PDFs, the alt text is displayed when I roll over the figure to which the alt text is assigned. Is there any way to keep the alt text but turn off the roll over effect?
I have a customer who finds the roll over effect bothersome.
    thanks for any assistance.
    Steve

No - if there's some ALT text, the Acrobat Family will always show it.

  • Adding alt text tags in InDesign (and Acrobat Pro)

I am having real difficulty adding alternative text tags. I created an INDD doc with rollover buttons linked to URLs firstly in InDesign CS4. I couldn't add alt text tags in CS4 so I then tried to add them in Acrobat X Pro but failed. Acrobat keeps wanting to class the PDF as a form. I then installed InDesign CS6 from the cloud and added alt text to the rollover buttons via object export options. However, these do not show when I export to PDF.
Can someone help me add alt text to my rollover buttons in my interactive PDF either in InDesign CS6 or in Acrobat Pro after I export it?

In InDesign CS6, you just need to add descriptions to buttons. This is done in the buttons and forms panel:
This is the alt text in Acrobat when you roll over the button:
    Hope that helps!

  • I added alt text to an Indesign created graphic but it won't show in Acrobat

I created these little check boxes in InDesign, basically a stroked box with a copied-from-Illustrator check mark. The box and the check are grouped and anchored to the each paragraph where the item has been completed (checked). I made sure the content of the frames were designated as graphic and not text or unassigned. I then click on the group, open object export options and assign a alt text desription (using custom setting), such as "completed" or "previiously completed", which is a gray check mark. InDesign shows the alt text, but when I export to Acrobat the PDF does not display the alt text. It sees it as a graphic but will not show the alt text that I created in InDesign.
The only way I have found to fix this is to create the entire box and check in illustrator and import as "real" graphic. This is kinda of pain to reimport and reposition all the boxes, when InDesign has the ability to create these simple graphics.
Any clue as to why Acrobat will not show the alt tags?

Pretty annoying - I didn't "chose" to not show my settings....
you selected something other than "show all" in the popUp menu over the presets list

  • Alt-text in InDesign

I am creating a master file in InDesign which will ultimately be published as EPUB and Accessible PDF.
I watched training videos and learned about the Adobe Bridge.  I entered all my Alt-Text in Bridge.
When I brought it into InDesign, I can see it in the XML-Description field in InDesign, but when I extract to EPUB or Accessible PDF, the Alt-Text is not carried through.  If I enter Alt-Text in InDesign, it does carry on through.
Is it something we are doing to the pictures in InDesign that is inhibiting the carry-through of the alt-text from Bridge?  If we use a Frame or resize the picture, does that interfere?
    Thank you much,
    Joyce

  • Alt text mouseover in hyperlink text?

I use alt tag text in Dreamweaver CS4 to give a text synopsis of the content on the linked page. If possible, how do you make alt text in the mouse-over of a hyperlink, for PDF output?External hyperlink text does give the address as a mouse-over alt text, but how do you modify that alt text?
If this is impossible in InDesign CS4, what would be the most efficient work-around solution? Comment boxes in Acrobat? Flash?

There is no way that I know to define Alt text when creating a hyperlink. However, if a hyperlink points to a URL, when you pause your mouse over the hyperlink in Acrobat or Reader, a tooltip will show the URL the hyperlink points to.
What you might investigate is using buttons. A little-used feature of creating buttons (which can be used to trigger actions of various kinds) is that you can specify what you could call "Alt text" which appears as tooltips when you mouse over them. When you define the button in the Button panel in CS4 or CS5, go to the flyout menu in the Button panel and select PDF Options. There is a Description field there which creates the text for a tooltip. So if the button is used to trigger a sound, for example, you could have the Description read "Double-click to Play". You'll see that text in the tooltip.

  • Image title tooltip (not alt text) doesn't work

There are half a dozen or so existing help requests mentioning alt text or discussing problems with the Google Toolbar add-on, but this is not my issue, so I am opening a separate help ticket.
If you are here about "alt" text, first read any of the posts explaining that "alt" text isn't supposed to appear, it's just a quirk of IE that it sometimes does, FF4 is correct and does what the standards ask and what other browsers do. You want "title" text. The best explanation seems to be:

If you have the Google Toolbar installed, turn it off and see if you get them back. This is a known issue, eg:

Neither was I. I *did* get them in safe mode, but I did a lot of resetting and mucking about without any luck. In the end, after doing a text diff between safe mode and not, of the Troubleshooting information (in the Help menu), I found that the issue might be Direct2D-related, and changed the flag "gfx.direct2d.disabled" to true in about:config. I now have tooltips back but a less efficient FF4.
Hope that this helps someone, and hope that the Direct2D issue gets sorted out!

  • Acrobat X Pro:  Accessibility Report says No Alt Text for image but there is

I have added the alternate text for images on my pdf but the accessibility report is still giving me errors stating that there is no alternate text.  Does anyone have any idea why?  I have checked and the alt text is there.  I don't understand this.
    Thank you.

I assume when you click on the error it is taking you to the location where the error is.  Not seeing the document it is hard to tell... do you have a multi-page document and when you click on the error does it take you to the location where that problem is?
There are several things that could cause this problem.  The Figure or other tag that contains the alt text must have content. It cannot be an empty tag.
It also cannot have another Tag inside of it containing the content.  There must be some actual content directly within the Tag with the alt text, not nested inside another Tag, if that makes any sense.
Or, there may be another Figure Tag that has no content. That, too, will generate an error.
If neither of those suggestions work, if you post the file I can probably find the problem.
