XML from FCP to FCE

Hi! I have FCP 7.0.3, and my friend has FCE 4.0.1. We're trying to work collectively, (He's doing the rough cut of our movie, then we're start interfacing between the two programs once we're working on the final cut) but I have a problem. I can open FCE files in FCP, but he can't open FCP project files in FCE, as I had expected. So the work around that I have found, through lots of internet searching, is that I can export XML files, and then he can import them into FCE, and then he'd have the exported sequence. But when I try it, he gets error messages. The only things I can think of is that I have the footage imported as Apple ProRes, and FCE doesn't recognize that kind of codec. Also, I don't know what version I should export the XML as (1 through 5). Help!
Thanks!
Paul

Here's one reply to a thread that is somewhat on this topic, from Creative Cow.
Re: Final Cut Express compatibility with FCP
by Mark Thurstlic on Mar 23, 2011 at 1:44:24 pm
Hi there
I had a similar issue with bring FCP files back into FCE. After fiddling around a bit I found that the solution lies in Exporting an XML file from FCP. What you need to do is, while in FCP click on FILE--EXPORT--XML
Then from the format pull down, select the version # that is compatible with your version of FCE. I found the "Apple XML Interchange Format, version 4" works with FCE v4.0.1. Then in FCE Import the XML file by FILE--IMPORT--FCP XML From Imovie.
An issue worth noting is that FCP seems to only export individual sequences at a time not entire projects. So if you have more then one sequence in a project that you would like to import into FCE you'll have to export them as XMLs one at a time.
Hope this helps

  • Additional audio channels being imported with XML from FCP. Merged Clips. Out of Sync

    Problem
    When I import an XML Interchange Format V5 file from FCP7 and then import into Premiere Pro CC, my merged clips now have 4 audio channels. 2 from the original file and 2 from the merged audio.
    Versions
    FCP 7
    Premiere Pro CC 7.2
    Workflow
    * Create merged clips in FCP
         * ProRes Video clip with camera audio
         * Stereo audio clip
         * Sync in Timeline
         * Delete unneeded audio tracks, reducing track on video clip to 1 mono track, centered
         * Drag to browser
    * Export XML Interchange V5
    * Open Premiere
    * Import XML Interchange File
    * Clips are imported, HOWEVER
         * Clips now have 4 tracks of audio
         * Tracks 1-2 are audio from the original Video clip
         * Tracks 3-4 are audio from the synced second source audio file
         * Additionally, tracks 1-2 are now OUT OF SYNC
    I cannot find a way around this. Clips now all have out of sync indicators on them. Merged audio is insync, and original audio is out of sync.
    I do not want to have to resync all of my audio, everything is tagged and organized into bins.
    Anybody know why this happens and a workaround?

    Ha ha, an excellently wry comparison.
    I'm using photo-jpeg because it was reccomended to me as a way to achieve greater image quality when exporting within the confines of youtube.

  • XML from FCP X 10.1.4 won't open in Logic Pro X 10.1.1?

    Hi, I've exported an XML of an edited project in FCP X (10.1.4) and am trying to import this to Logic Pro X 10.1.1. I have looked at various tutorials online and also searched through documentation and other support forums, and cannot find a mention of this issue.
    I've created (and tried to re-create to see if this was the problem) a FCPX XML export. Then I've tried to use the import command in logic and also just right-clicking the XML file and telling it to open in logic. The program shows a progress bar, this ends after a few seconds, and then absolutely nothing has been imported. I've been hunting for a solution for a few hours, but would love some help to get this to work! Because the right-click option gave me a choice, I've also tried opening the xml file in Logic 10.0.7, which didn't work either.
    I am running 10.9.5. Upgrading to Yosemite is about the only thing I can think of to try and see if that helps.

    I'm on latest version of OS X, FCPX, LPX and FCPXML export ingests into LPX just fine.

  • Xml from FCP 7 to Premiere Pro CC issues

    FCP 7 project exported using XML (no items highlighted in FCP) and imported into Premiere. All sequences and bins etc "seemed" to transfer fine. HOWEVER, some of the bins/folders that were transfered did not contain all of the clips as the original.  Best I can tell, any "copies" of a clip that may be in another bin WILL NOT TRANSFER.  Even though the XML file shows a certain clip listed, if it is a copy of a clip already in the project- Premiere will not import it. Needless to say, this has been a real head scratcher. Anybody have a similar experience?

    Okay, after trying both steps in the document above, the missing codecs/preview presets still aren't available when I go to File>New>Sequence. I guess that's the only way to check if they have installed correctly/activated correctly right? It says it's correctly activated though so not sure why it's doing this.
    Are these presets also missing in the trial verison of the software?

  • XML from Final Cut Pro 7.0.2

    I have one single text clip in the FCP sequence to test this XML transfer. The text is centered. When imported into Premiere 6, the text is a different font and is up on the upper left corner.
    I have a credit sequence that I need to get into After Effects from FCP. For some reason, Premiere is not translation correctly. Few weeks ago, I was trying to import XML from FCP with some video clips and they would be in the wrong time. I've a feeling the Premiere isn't working as it should be. I just reinstalled Premiere a few days ago and the issue is a problem. I did try another FCP XML export from from another system and version and Premiere is not translating text properly. There's no plugins or trasitions, just basic text or video.
    What can I do get this working?

    My experience with XMLs from FCP is that text in particular doesn't work correctly. To the point where we've had numerous system crashes and have pinpointed it as being due to text imported from an XML. Markers brought in the same way are also very problematic. We've been deleting any text before XMLing any sequences, and then recreating the text within Premiere or After Effects.

  • Importing a prores xml from fcp7 into premiere cs6

    I'm finally making the switch from FCP7 to CS6.  I'm trying to import an xml of a prores (1080p, 23.98, prores lt) sequence from FCP 7.  It doesn't have any effects, titles, etc in it, yet Premiere keeps giving me the file import error ("this project contained a sequence that cannot be opened.  No sequence preview preset file or codec could be associated with this sequence type").
    I made sure that I created a sequence setting/preset that matches my prores sequence from FCP.  If I try exporting the xml from FCP as a DV or DVCPROHD sequence, it imports just fine in Premiere.  It just won't import the prores sequence (which is a bummer because all my FCP projects use ProRes).
    I'm on a Mac Pro running Mountain Lion (10.8.2) and Premiere Pro 6.0.2.
    Any advice or help is greatly appreciated!

    I have a similar issue with a film I am trying to bring into PP from FCP. I will need to lift sequences from this film into a longer compile and add new sequences, and since FCP 7 is now dead in the water it makes sense to transfer my entire workflow to PP CS6. However, on import the XML file is showing fine in the timeline, but the sequence settings do not seem to have been imported properly and I am getting a 4:3 aspect frame ratio on a film that was 1440/1080, 16:9, square pixel, Pro Res HQ in FCP.
    I have tried to set up a custom sequence in PP with the same settings and also with the frame set to 1920;1080, but no matter what i do I cannot seem to get the XML file to import correctly.
    I have downloaded and installed the Pro Res codecs to Library/Quicktime but that does not seem to have worked.
    Anyone else got a a bright idea? Otherwise I will need to continue this project in FCP, which does not seem like the right thing to do any more....

  • Exporting multiple projects from FCP timeline hangs

    When rendering multiple projects from Final Cut Pro's timeline through compressor, I get varied results. I am rendering 3 files - Apple Pro Res, MPEG-2 (VBR Highest quality for Blu-Ray), & 48khz AIFF audio file.
    Typically we will set up 3 projects for one night to render overnight (30 minutes to 1 hour for each project). In the morning when we come in compressor will sometimes show up as 90 hours remaining, sometimes it will still be cranking out on the last project with 12 hours remaining. If we leave it going it will eventually finish. However when we shut everything down, reboot computer, start export from timeline and it completes the render in HALF the time compressor stated remaining before we closed it. Each project typically takes 6-8 hours to get all three files (pro res, MPEG-2, AIFF) we allow 18 hours for render.
    Drive space should not be an issue. We have a 5 TB array (typically has 2 TB free for 4 projects), system drive has 350 GB free and the 4 projects rendered out will take up approximately 300 GB. The project reads, and writes to the array for everything.
    Any help on trying to figure out why compressor slows down over time. Once restarting compressor goes as expected.
    Thanks for the help in advance.

    All software is up to date latest versions of FCP and Compressor.

    This is like an EDL...Edit Decision List.  This basically is a metadata rich document that is used to transfer clip information between systems.  You can export an XML from FCP 7 to FCP 6 so that you can open a sequence, or a project.  Export an XML of the sequence and open that up in Excel to have clip name, reel and timecode information for tracking footage.
    No media is enclosed in this file.

  • Having Problems importing XML file from FCP 6 onto a FCP 5 application

    I have a project file that i worked on FCP 6 and wanted to move to FCP 5 app. on a different Pro Mac but when i try to import the xml, it prompts me to "Please choose a Translation Document File". I choose the FCP 6 project file because i wasn't sure what to choose and i get the ERROR: No translation templates matching the selected XML file were found. Unable to import this file.
    any ideas?

    make sure you exported your XML from FCP6 using a compatible XML version (1, 2 or 3) ... version 3 would make the most sense as its the most recent FCP5 compatible version .... don't export using version 4 (the default for FCP6), that one is for transfering projects between different installations of FCP6 only

  • Color timeline starts each clip at 00:00:00:00 after sending from FCP

    When I export a sequence from FCP (7.0.3) to Color (1.5.3), the latter shows a timeline with clips of the proper duration, but with the wrong in/out. Each clip in the Color timeline starts at 00:00:00:00 of the source file, as opposed to the "in" I had selected in FCP.
    The video originated as h.264 files from a 5D. I transcoded the files to ProRess 422 for editing, and am sending them from FCP to Color as such. The FCP timeline contains nothing but these ProRes video clips.
    Thanks for your help...

    any way to use an edl with these kind clips?
    That poses an interesting option, maybe. For starters, though, the Send To... COLOR command instructs FCP to write an XML export that is decoded by COLOR, and that should take care of things.
    There is a strategy that AVID users sometimes employ, and that is to export a CMX EDL, open that under COLOR and link to the media directly under COLOR (this works for RED flow). I am mystified as to why COLOR defaults to the first frame of your exported clips -- unless the time code is faulty in some way (or is not present), and so COLOR is simply beginning at the beginning as a kind of default.
    Even if the in-point is wrong, are the clip durations correct?
    Are you absolutely sure there is timecode on the ProRes clips? Apparently this is a problem shared with Final Cut Express, where exported QT clips always start at zero, but this is hearsay on my part as I have never dealt with FCE.
    An alternate strategy at this point might be to export a complete Quicktime of your finished (textless) project, re-import it into FCP and "razor" cut it using your original timeline as a cutting guide. That sequence would go to COLOR with no issues.
    A lot of users do this as standard procedure if they want to avoid a lot of "baking" and conforming if they've got a large number of mixed, or unsupported, media clips on a timeline. As a brute-force solution, its the Big Unifier.

  • Aspect Ratio wrong in sequence imported from FCP

    I'm a reasonably experienced user of Final Cut who intends now to migrate to Premiere (leaving the sinking ship?) So, at present, I'm trying to import current projects from FCP into Premiere using XML.
    The result for a large scale and pretty advanced project was disasterous losses, so I've decided to start with a much smaller project, which contains a single sequence in the same format as the media, 20 or so HDV 1080p25 clips, and a handful of wav sound files. The result is better, but there are two problems I've encountered:
    1. When I open the sequence in the timeline the aspect ratio, which should be 16:9 is squashed in to something more like 4:3. Opening a clip from the bin in the source monitor does not have this effect, but I can't work out how to rectify the change of aspect ratio when the sequence is playing in the program monitor. - Any tips?
    2. The audio file icons in the project imported into Premiere are unlinked. When I try reconnecting them, Premiere says it can't because of a 'header error'. - Any clues to what this means and why it should be?
    Thanks.

    Hello Jim Simon,
    Yes, I've tried importing one of these wav files into a new project, but it Premiere won't allow me to. It comes up with a message saying:
    "The file cannot be opened because of a header error".
    Any ideas?
    PS. As this was a side issue to my main query, and the title of this thread doesn't refer to it and hence might make it hard for others to find, I've added a new query to cover this under the title: "Header Error when importing Wav files"

  • My sequence will not show up in Color 1.5.3 when sent from FCP 7

    I cannot get clips from FCP 7 to show up when sent to Color. I had been able to get this to work perfectly fine earlier, but now for some reason, when sending a sequence from FCP to Color, Color doesn't automatically create a new project with the sequence in it. I've Googled for answers as much as I can, but cannot figure out what's going wrong.
    By the way, the footage is from a Canon 7D, imported into FCP from PluralEyes 8.
    EDIT: I've tried to manually export the XML from Final Cut into Color. Color will not even recognize the exported XML file. I've done what others have suggested online and deleted my Color & FCP preferences files out of my User/Library. I've created new FCP projects and tried to send to color from a new project. None of these have helped at all.

    I just had this exact same problem.  Clips from my FCP 7 sequence would not show up when I sent them to Color 1.5.  No way.  No how.
    I solved my problem (at least for now) by simply restarting my machine.  I realized that it had been running for days, and it probably just needed a reboot.  Try it.  It might work.
    And yes, I'm running Mountain Lion, too.  10.8.2.
    Good luck!  ----Todd Ruel

  • Command to Export project as Final Cut Pro XML from jsx script

    Hi All,
    Can somebody get me the command to export the project as final cut pro xml from jsx script.
    I was using the extension builder script earlier for cs6 panel development, so we were using pjct.exportFinalCutProXML("pathname");
    Now I am working for panel in Premiere CC so working on HTML 5 panel and qe dom scripting(.jsx).
    In some jsx examples i got there is script to export sequence as final cut pro xml but cannot get the code for project export.
    project.activeSequence.exportAsFinalCutProXML(entire_out_path);
    Also please let me know if there are any kind of reference available about all the functions and properties in the pe dom scripting for premiere pro cc.
    I am using premiere pro cc 7.1, windows 7, Eclipse Kepler.
    Thanks in advance,

    When you reimport the exported project XML to FCP, do you get the full project or just the single bin/sequence? If you get the full project then it sounds like you need Premiere help, not FCP help ... have you tried asking on the Adobe forums? If you only get the single bin/sequence then it seems you might have inadvertently selected those prior to creating the project export. Try making sure that your FCP Browser window is active and that you have not selected anything within that window prior to using the File > Export > XML command. If that still causes issue then you might try using an earlier FCP XML version.
    Hope it helps
