Xml/itl-"The file "iTunes Library.itl does not appear to be a valid..

"The file "iTunes Library.itl does not appear to be a valid iTunes library file. iTunes has attempted to recover your iTunes library and renamed this file to "iTunes Library (Damaged).itl"
does enyone know how to fix this for ever?
thanks.

Katrina, created test, copied ITL (I Tunes Library file?) across, did the shift thing, I Tunes opens with my songs, created a play list, closed I tunes, re-opened it, play list still there. Is that what you mean?
I think I have some other issues as well.
I Tunes says 2477 songs/485 artists, my I Pod has 300 more.
Windows explorer suggests 589 artists (I keep library organised) I've lost the connection to the "movie" folder.
Also despite songs appearing in the library, they won't play in I Tunes at all. Fine on Ipod (although not docked since this started), fine with other media. players in same location.
Is this a nightmare where I have to delete everything & start again?

    Hi shyanne23,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  If your iTunes library file has become damaged in some way, you may want to try recreating your iTunes library and playlists by following this article:

I tried to reinstall QuickTime + iTunes, clean the system and then reinstall. But this does not work. I also tried to create a brand new library. But no success...

  • My reinstalled iTunes keeps saying: THE FILE "ITUNES LIBRARY.ITL" CANNOT BE READ BECAUSE IT WAS CREATED BY A NEWER VERSION OF ITUNES....

I accidentally uninstalled Quicktime from my computer so my Itunes was not functioning. It told me to uninstall my Itunes, then reinstall it. Which I did.
Trouble is, now it comes up with 'THE FILE "ITUNES LIBRARY.ITL" CANNOT BE READ BECAUSE IT WAS CREATED BY A NEWER VERSION OF ITUNES'...which I believe is because before I uninstalled my original Itunes, I had not completed the recent update to the newest version of Itunes, whereas the one I just installed is the latest one.
So THEN, I download the previous version of Itunes (iTunes 10.2.1(x64)) but when I try and run it, it comes up with the message that the thing '...IS NOT VALID WIN32 APPLICATION'.
Now I'm stuck and have absolutely no idea what to do. Please help!

When iTunes updates, it should create a backup of your library file before updating.
You may be able to get back by using this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1967?viewlocale=en_US
When doing this, drag BOTH iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Library.xml to the desktop. You will need the xml file if the method above doesn't work.
    In that case try this:

  • Error message "The file 'iTunes library.itl' . . .

Someone help! I got an error message "The file 'iTunes library.itl' cannpt be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." What does that mean? I had a clean-up done and now I can't access my music! I tried to download a updated version but I still get the same error. What can I do?

If you navigate to your iTunes Music Folder in Explorer you will see several files. The artwork folder contains artwork but only iTunes and iPod can read these files. There is a iTunes music folder with the actual music files. Then there are two files called iTunes Music Library.xml and iTunes library.ilt. These are two text and database files, respectively, that contain your ratings, play counts, last played and possibily your playlists too (Dont know about playlists). Stuff like that. There is also a previous library folder with an older database file. So in theory, you could delete the database and text files and still have your music. Then just download iTunes 6 and install. But you will lose ratings, play counts, last played, playlists etc. What I would recommend is to move your music to another location, then uninstall iTunes and delete the files I was talking about. Then reinstall iTunes. I think everything I said here is correct but I am not completely sure so I can't guarantee anything. Also I am using a Mac so it may be different, probably not though.

  • The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read...

Ok, here's my problem. I'm trying to figure out how to transfer over all my songs, videos & playlists from iTunes to a new computer. I don't have the new one hooked up yet b/c I need to save all my files first. Well, I thought I was going to need the latest version of iTunes to be able to do this. I have version 7.6 and when I opened up iTunes it asked me if I'd like to download the latest version (8.1). I clicked yes and it opened up an exploror page from apple where it had the download button. I clicked on download and it went through the process. Well, once it finished I clicked on iTunes to open it up and when it did, all my songs and playlists were gone. It looked as if I had downloaded it for the first time. I figured it would be upgrade to the lastest version and all my stuff would be there. Not take all of it away. I freaked out and tried to restore my computer back to it's most recent checkpoint before I downloaded the lastest version thinking it would reset back to the 7.6 version. Well now when I try to open iTunes, I get this message: The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Now I have no idea what to do. I seem to be worse off than I was before. Even when I plug my iPod in, it gives me the same message. Now I can't open up iTunes at all. So if anyone can help me solve this problem so I can be able to open iTunes again and figure out how to transfer everything to my new computer, I would be most grateful!
    Thanks!
    Seriously frustrated

One thing to remember is I upgraded to the lastest version, but when none of my files where there, I went into my control panel for the computer and restored it to the most recent checkpoint which was last night, thinking it would reset iTunes to before the upgrade. A sort of "go back in time" fix. Which it did b/c it shows it back to version 7.6. Would that make a difference? There is an XML file title iTunes Music Library that was modified on 3-24-09. Here's another problem. I created a folder for the desktop to start moving files into that I wanted to save for the new computer. I moved an iTunes folder into the new one I created. It's there that I see the Past Libraries folder. But when I go to my C drive and the program files/iTunes, there is no such folder. Obviously b/c I moved it. But what I don't get is when I tried using shift to open iTunes, those older library files weren't there to chose from. There was one from todays date and that's the one I picked. But none of my songs and stuff were on it. So I have no idea why one file will be in one place, but not the other and vice versa. Am I confusing you yet? B/c I sure as heck don't know what I'm doing.

I just installed iTunes on my new laptop.  When I click on the desktop icon I receive a pop up that says "The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes".  I have no idea what this means or what to do about it.  I can't even find a file on my computer like the one referred to in the pop up.  I am currently considering keeping my old laptop if it is the only way for me to continue to access iTunes.  What should I do to fix this?

What version of iTunes are you using? An .itl file is something that Windows uses, or very old versions of iTunes on Mac. The library file on Macs is now .xml and has been since late iTunes 4.
Is iTunes running ok without any problems after you OK that message? If it is, then you may be able to ignore it if you can't account for why you're getting it. But make sure you take backups in case something happens in the future.

  • TS1717 My itunes won't open and I get message that says "The file iTunes library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes." I am unsure what this means, but I have uninstalled and reinstalled the itunes, and it still will not

I receive the message: The file "iTunes library.itl"cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes. I do not know exactly what this means.  I have Windows 7 on my computer and was able access itunes until just recently.  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes multiple times and that does not work.  Sometimes I can get in when immediately after installing, but then if I close it, i cannot get back in. Now, i can't get in at all.

That message is usually a sign that you tried to roll back to an earlier build of iTunes, but occasionally I've seen it connected to a new upgrade. This technique should fix things.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • I keep getting this message when I launch itunes: The file "itunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes

Itunes was working fine until i plugged in my 6th gen shuffle.  itunes wouldn't read the pod and it kept showing an error message telling me i needed to uninstall and reinstall itunes.  So i did.  Now, itunes won't open up.  i keep getting the same message, " The file "itunes library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes.  HELP!!!

Problem solved by doing the following:
Open PC/Mac and search for iTunes Library.
From the list, select the most recent version of iTunes Library. Save this to a folder.
    Delete iTunes from your computer.
    Install latest version of iTunes.
When I opened the new version of iTunes, everything was there as before.
I didn't need to import the saved version of iTunes Library. Maybe this happens automatically?????

Upgrade iTunes to the latest version. It should be 10.5.3.

  • ITunes corrupted, must be reinstalled. Now 'the file iTunes Library itl. cannot be read, created by newer version of iTunes.'

My iTunes programme on Windows PC has suddenly become corrupted and must be reinstalled. After two attempts, I installed the requisite 64 bit version, but it won't open as "The file 'iTunes Library itl.' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes."  Where do I go from here (bearing in mind very little technical knowhow!)?

There are two things you can try here:
If you updated fairly recently, you can recover a backup copy of the library file made when you updated.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1967?viewlocale=en_US
This gives you the library as it was when you updated.
Or you can recreate your library from the xml file, this will be more up to date, but not all the metadata is recovered.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
At the end of the article it tells you how to add files you your library if you don't have an xml file.
Anywhere it tells you to drag a file to the trash in either article, I would drag it to the desktop or another folder of your choice in case you need it later.
The second article also include links to general troubleshooting if iTunes will not start after recovering/recreating your library.
