XmlHttpRequest.xmlResponse in AJAX returning multiple rows

Hi,
First of my apologizes as this question in on AJAX, probably I shouldnot have posted here, I feel you guys can help me out in this.
I have Arraylist which contains 4 rows in it. I am constructing a XML with those 4 rows by iterating it through a loop. Hence the reponse looks like this:-
<customer>
<customername>
Anto
</customername>
<customername>
Bob
</customername>
<customername>
Cedrill
</customername>
<customername>
Danny
</customername>
</customer>
When i check that it in the "JS" by using xmlHttpRequest.responseText i am getting the above format, since it is a XML i am using following code:
if (http_request.readyState == 4) {
          if (http_request.status == 200) {
               var response_XML = http_request.responseXML;
               var customer = http_request.responseXML.getElementsByTagName("customer"); // Root tag
alert("customer.length is:::"+customer.length); // returning "1" as the length
for(i = 0; i < customer.length; i++){
               var node = customer;
               var customername = node.getElementsByTagName("customername")[i].firstChild.nodeValue;
alert("the customer names are:"+customername); // getting only the first name "Anto"
Here the customer.length is "1" instead of "4" , i am not sure why? hence i am getting only the first customername "Anto" and other customernames are not displayed. In my controller i am doing this:-
if(customerList.size() > 0){
                    Iterator<Customer> iter = customerList.iterator();
                    response.setCharacterEncoding("UTF-8");
                    PrintWriter out = response.getWriter();
                    response.setContentType("text/xml");
                    out.write("<customer>");
                    while(iter.hasNext()) {
                    Customer customer = (Customer) iter.next();
                    out.write("<customername>");
                    out.write(customer.getName());
                    out.write("</customername>");
out.write("</customer>");
Why i am not getting all the 4 records through AJAX call, whether i have done anything wrong in "JS"? Please do shed some light into this. Excepting response..

var customer = http_request.responseXML.getElementsByTagName("customer"); // Root tagYou have only 1 customer element. And what you are seeing is correct - it's length is 1.
To iterate through customernames, you have to
      var customer = http_request.responseXML.getElementsByTagName("customer"); // Returns a collection
      var customerNames = customer[0].getElementsByTagName("customername");
      for(i = 0; i < customerNames .length; i+){..........ram.
