Xmonad/Slim causing keyboard input failure on agetty?

I have just installed xmonad along with slim, and I notice that when xmonad is running
and i Alt+FX out to a tty console, a lot of my keyboard inputs are missed. E.g. I will try
to type "pacman -Syu" and all i get is "pamn Su". It is not key-specific as I can
(with repeated attempts) get the letters which were missed in that example.
I'm pretty sure the problem isn't slim because before I've logged in, if i switch out to a
tty i don't have the problem.
I did notice that xmonad hasn't changed slim's background, but I think that's more
down to the fact that I haven't told xmonad to do otherwise, rather than a possible
cause of the problem.
xmonad's functionality is fine, no keyboard problems there. Only when I try on agetty.
Anyone seen this before?
thanks
EDIT: I suppose it has to be slim... I tried booting with runlevel 3 instead and doing
startx manually takes away the problem. I'm not impressed enough with graphical
login managers to pursue this any longer, i'll just start X from .bash_profile
Still curious as to whether anyone has ever seen this before though

Thanks for your reply, good to know it's not just me
It is a shame though, it was nice(looking) while it lasted (about an hour).

  • Apple-c (copy) causes keyboard input failure

    Whenever I use the key combination apple-c (copy) the computer intermittantly freezes. It doesn't seem noticable at first until I start trying to type or use the two finger scrolling. I'll often have to rescroll, or retype part of what I was typing because it didn't all get entered in. (example: Todaya lovela = Today is a lovely day.) The only solution I've found to this problem is to reboot or use the menu to do a copy rather than the keystroke combination: apple-c.

    Hi Ash,
    Check to see if Sticky Keys is turned on the Universal Access Preferences - Keyboard tab. It is easy to accidentally turn this feature on by pressing the shift key five times in a row. Also check here to see if Slow Keys is turned on.
    If that is not it, you may want to check your System Preferences and check to see if the Command-C key combination is set as the Speech Listening Key in the Speech preferences. Check out: Mac OS X: Keyboard works, except for one key.

  • Keyboard input failure in 2nd java applet

    The (London) Times offers crosswords developed as Java applets. With Mandriva 2007 newly installed on my laptop (Firefox 1.5.0.8, JRE1.5.0_08), I completed one crossword and loaded a second: no keyboard input to cells, no focus shown on cells. Killed the applet, reloaded: same problem. Quit Firefox, restarted crossword: same problem. Quit session, restarted, reloaded Firefox and crossword: same problem.
    Upgraded to Firefox 2.0 and JRE1.5.0_09. Started a crossword with a couple of entries, quit and started a second: same problem - no focus on cell, no input.
    I think this is connected in some way with Mandriva 2007, because the combination Mandriva 2006 with Firefox 1.5.0.7 and JRE 1.4.2-09 works correctly.
    I believe the problem lies initially with Java, because keyboard input to non-Java pages in Firefox worked without problems.

    I have exactly the same problem with opera 9.02 browser, jre1.6, linux debian sarge and the crossword puzzle of "Le Monde" http://www.lemonde.fr/web/article/0,1-0@2-3280,36-139043,0.html
    It worked with jre 1.4 linux FC2, same opera.

  • Graphics intensive apps cause keyboard input loss

    Hi Everyone
    I have recently had some unfortunate incidents that have required me to re-install Mac OS X. Post re-installation, i have had issues with some relatively graphical intensive apps (Pixelmator, Photoshop, Sketchup 7) after 10-20 minutes using any of the given apps, i lose input on the alpha-numeric keys.
    i still have the backspace, shift, tab, modifier, and function keys, but a-z, 1-0, all punctuation, and the return key disappear. this is easily fixed with a restart of my machine, but that causes me to not be able to save new work with identifiable names. thanks for your feedback!!!!!!

    hi. thanks for your reply. it was completely a brain fail on my part, I misread the install instructions on Linux Mint, and reformatted my hard drive by accident. then, after booting from my Leopard install disk, I deleted the linux partition, and made a new 1 partition setup for Mac OS X. After doing what I thought was a regular install, the "restore from time machine backup could not find, and therefore not mount my backup drive within migration assistant, or whatever that function uses. I ended up having to manually drag all my files from the backups themselves (inside the backups sparsbundle that time machine creates. I have since re installed all the current offending apps, and still, the problem persists.I just installes Snow Leopard Yesterday, hoping that would fix it, and it did for about, 8 hours. now Photoshop, Sketchup, and pixelmator all have this effect.
    let me know if you need more info/clarification.

  • [Solved] Programs hang on keyboard input (uim-xim)

    Update: I've narrowed the issue down (via trial and error) to uim-xim.  If it's running, it causes this problem (in XMonad) and if it isn't, gnucash has no issues.  Oddly enough, when I start uim-xim by hand after gnucash, it works fine too.  Starting uim-xim by hand before gnucash results in the same issue, and so I'm inclined to believe it's either an issue with XIM implementation, or simply uim-xim.  Might also be a mixture of XMonad and uim-xim, as it works fine in Openbox.
    I've noticed lately that certain GTK programs (I'd list them, but I haven't paid close attention until today, where I was using gnucash) work fine until I try to input anything via the keyboard.  The moment I start typing (or, at the latest when I hit the shift key or backspace key) the program will hang (without any error message).  I originally assumed that this was an issue with the program - not my window manager.  However, I tried one of the problem programs (gnucash) in Openbox today, and it works just fine.  That leads me to assume it's caused by my configuration in some way.  I have absolutely no idea where to start debugging this issue.
    A bit of information:
    I use UIM (in both openbox and XMonad with identical configurations), run a script for a Japanese date format in XMonad (piped to dzen), and load the same xmodmap file in both window managers.  Also, I start all my window managers using CDM (Console Display Manager), but in the case of XMonad I supply a bash script instead of the binary, in order to preload certain files.  Also, I use a german keyboard layout.

  • Keyboard input has stopped working in MS Word - Yosemite

    I made the mistake of upgrading to Yosemite in December.
    The latest issue is in MS Word (2011, version 14.3.6)
    When trying to switch between two Word documents, the keyboard input stopped working. I am using the built-in Mac keyboard. The trackpad still works, and keyboard input works in some programs (Safari), but it's impossible to type anything into Word. I've tried "Esc" in case some menu was selected, but to no avail.
    I've also had this problem in EndNote.
    Curious if anyone has a solution - and if you have tips for how to get Word to run faster in Yosemite, please post!
    Thanks ~

    There have been a couple reports of keyboard failures, mostly initial key presses. Mine initialy caused USB bus timeouts and startup problems and then failed completely. Call Apple or take the machine/keyboard back to a Apple store for a replacement.

  • OSX/SL 10.6.8 all window apps lose keyboard input; mouse and cmd-N work for spaces

    Input suddenly stops going to all applications, from MacBook Pro and wireless keyboards, and from "Show Keyboard viewer" (OSX 10.6.8 'Snow Leopard', MacBook Pro). Though the OSX Keyboard Viewer shows the keys onscreen as they are pressed on the MacBook and wireless keyboards. 'Spaces' responds to cmd-N commands, but no input is possible to any running or newly-started 3rd party or Apple-provided application. Killing off applications one by one doesn't recover keyboard input ability;  a complete reboot appears necessary to restore the ability to key input into applications. This happens repeatedly, yet never registers as an OS/X 'crash' because 'Force Quit'ting applications and restarting is still possible using only the magic mouse or trackpad.   No data  whether only logging out and back in would correct the apparent input-focus disconnect of all applications with the window manager. There may be some way to restart the window manager by using the mouse to open up new apps and/or cut and paste characters ( including a carriage return ) or cut and paste entire saved typed commands into a terminal window.

    Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
    Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
    Isolating an issue by using another user account
    If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Keyboard input delay Flex/AIR

    I've build an AIR desktop app that uses an USB barcode scanner. To capture the token provided by the barcode scanner an input field is used.
    When testing the barcode input was only partially captured by the scanner. This was caused by the barcode scanner's input coming in the fast. Increasing the key stroke delay of the barcode scanner (config tool from motorola) solved the problem however this is not ideal.
    Does anyone has experience with this type of problems? What is an approach to solve this? Maybe by writing an Java compagnion app that captures the keyboard input?

    I just ran into this same problem. Our users are scanning barcodes from various labels using various types of scanners (changing the delay using scanner software wasn't an option). We also have to allow them to scan to a TextInput within a DataGrid, which created even more problems. There were 2 very interesting things I learned in coming up with a solution for this one:
    1. As mentioned previously, the scanner inputs the data so quickly that the enter key event is often processed before the change event for the text. I tried several solutions (like trying to force the change event before the enter key is processed), but learned that the best solution was just to add the delay as mentioned in previous posts.
    2. When adding to a DataGrid control, I learned that both the DataGrid's & the TextInput's key down events are fired by the same SystemManager event. Though you can override the TextInput's keyDownHandler, you can't override the DataGrid's because it's a private method. So, even though my delay was being processed in the TextInput, the DataGrid was forcing control away from it and moving to the next item in the grid. To get around this one, I had to stop propagation of the event from the TextInput, then re-start the DataGrid's event once the delay was complete. I also had to process a focus-out event to get it to move to the next item in the DataGrid.
    Here's the code I used inside a custom TextInput control to handle processing both stand-alone and inside a DataGrid:
    override protected function keyDownHandler(event:KeyboardEvent):void
          // If the enter key was pressed, then we need to add a delay.
          // Barcode scanners quite often process the enter key before the TextInput
          // control has time to finish processing all the text. (e.g., Instead of
          // getting 12345 as a text entry, you could get 123 or 1234.)
          if (event.charCode == Keyboard.ENTER)
               // If this is the first time we've processed the enter key, we need to
               // add the delay.
               if (_keyboardEvent == null)
               _keyboardEvent = new KeyboardEvent(event.type, event.bubbles,
               event.cancelable, event.charCode, event.keyCode, event.keyLocation,
               event.ctrlKey, event.altKey, event.shiftKey);
               event.stopImmediatePropagation();
               barcodeTimer(_keyboardEvent);
                          return;
               // If the enter key is pressed while we are still in the delay, ignore
               // it.
               else if (_keyboardEvent != null && _keyboardEvent != event)
                         return;
               // If the delay is complete, then we need to restart events related to
               // the enter key so the control is handled properly.
               else
                    super.keyDownHandler(event);
                    // If the TextInput is inside a DataGrid, then we need to dispatch the
                    // DataGrid's key down event. We also need to make sure the proper
                    // focus change happens (since this was stopped in the original event
                    // propagation).
                    if (parent != null && parent.parent != null &&
               parent.parent is mx.controls.DataGrid)
               parent.parent.dispatchEvent(event);
               dispatchEvent(new FocusEvent(FocusEvent.KEY_FOCUS_CHANGE, true,
                              false, null, event.shiftKey, Keyboard.TAB));
            _keyboardEvent = null;
                    return;
          super.keyDownHandler(event);
    * This is a copy of the keyboard event to be processed once the barcode
    * delay is complete.
    private var _keyboardEvent:KeyboardEvent = null;
    * This method launches a timer of sufficient length to allow barcode
    * scanner text to be processed before it re-launches the keyboard event.
    * @param event This is the key-down event to be restarted once the timer is
    * complete.
    private function barcodeTimer(event:KeyboardEvent):void
          var t:Timer = new Timer(30, 1); // 30 ms
       t.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER,
               function():void
               keyDownHandler(event);
       t.start();

  • Keyboard input delayed in Siebel application // letters lost while typing

    Hi all,
    We have a strange problem on a client computer. While working with Siebel, keyboard input is extremely delayed. When typing a word or a phrase, it takes some seconds to appear in the corresponding field, and also some chars are just lost if one is typing too fast. This does only happen in Siebel - all other applications are OK.
    I have seen this already some months ago, but don't remember the cause.
    Web Client 7.8.2.14 QF0E76
    Win XP SP3 IE8
    Did anyone ever experience this? Might be some specific driver issue or IE security update or whatever?
    Thanks
    Benny

    Thanks Wilson for your input, unfortunately resetting browser settings and stuff like this does not help.
    In the meantime I have done more research on this and found something interesting. The dropped characters / missing keystrokes do only appear when typing in Siebel popup applets. We do NEVER lose any keystroke when typing in a normal form or list applet. I have run a little test with a vanilla SRF file and a VBS Script.
    I placed a VBS file on my desktop which will use SendKeys to simulate typing the word "Siebel" several times.
    The source code of the VBS file is:
    >
    Option Explicit
    Dim WshShell, c
    Set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
    c=0
    WScript.Sleep 5000
    Do While c < 5
    WshShell.SendKeys "S"
    WScript.Sleep 70
    WshShell.SendKeys "i"
    WScript.Sleep 40
    WshShell.SendKeys "e"
    WScript.Sleep 30
    WshShell.SendKeys "b"
    WScript.Sleep 90
    WshShell.SendKeys "e"
    WScript.Sleep 120
    WshShell.SendKeys "l"
    WScript.Sleep 70
    WshShell.SendKeys " "
    WScript.Sleep 90
    c = c + 1
    Loop
    WScript.Quitwhen I click this script I have 5 seconds to switch to Siebel and point the cursor into a text field.
    -> When this text field is on a form applet, it correctly writes "Siebel Siebel Siebel Siebel Siebel"
    -> When this field is on a MVG applet, it sometimes drops keystrokes like "Siebel Siel iebel Siebel Sibel"
    what the hell could be the problem ??????
    Could someone try this in another environment??
    We are on 7.8.2.14 QF0E76 ...

  • Keyboard input stops after a few characters

    Suddenly, I cannot use Firefox 8.0.1. Keyboard input fails after a few characters. Sometimes (but not always), mouse input fails as well. The only button that works when this happens is the "X" (close program) button in the top right corner of the window.
    The only things I changed recently were adding FlashGot and Windows Media Player plugins. Firefox worked after each installation and continued to work for at least a couple of days.
    Did a complete removal including personal settings, clean installed 8.0.1 without any personal settings, but the problem persists.
    I have no other keyboard or mouse input problems with any other browser or programme. (I am submitting this on Chrome browser, and everything is fine.)
