Xmp files have become disassociated with image

My xmp files have become disassociated with my image in ACR cs5. Bridge shows thumbnail and xmp file side by side for any changes i make in ACR or in rating images theough bridge.  I have searched for answers but coming up empty. Anyone?

If you are reffering to raw files, yes, this is as expected and designed. Raw files are considered Read Only files and the variouse metadata is therefore stored in the .xmp side car files. Metadata for TIFF, PSD & JPEG as well as DNG files can be safely embedded into the file so there is no need of a side car file.
Just be sure you keep the raw + .xmp files together and essentially treate them as one file.

  • I have a CD with images which is published by CareStream health inc. , CareStream cd direct. how can I open it with my mac?

I have a Cd with images that I need to open.
It is published by Carestream health inc.
any ideas what I can do ?
    thanks

    What format are these images?
The health care industry is a bit behind the times, often relying on custom-made programs that read/write custom file formats (even with images or videos, rather than using standard file formats), and often those programs only run on Windows.  My guess would be you've gotten a CD that is loaded with software to allow viewing of a custom file format on Windows and that won't work at all on a Mac.

  • What effects do XMP files have in CS, LR, and Elements (Organizer & Editor)?

I wonder what effects the .XMP files have on Photoshop applications.  Should I keep them when working in the OS (WIN7) or chuck them?  What effects would deleting XMP have?

THe XMP files contain all the edit information for any raw files you have.  If you chuck them you will loose any edits you made.
If you do not want to see them in Bridge click View and uncheck show hidden files.  They only use about 2 kb.

  • XMP files not being created with DNGs...

I'm used to using Bridge with ACR to process Nikon NEFs. But a recent camera update has me experimenting with converting the D3's NEFs to DNG files and editing them with CS2 and Bridge 1.04 which works better on my system. I've also experimented with CS3 and Bridge 2.1.1.9 with the same DNG files.
In both cases XMP files are not being created when working with DNG files. I have enabled "Save image settings in : Sidecar ".xmp" files" turned ON. But they do not seem to be generated and I assume the ACR adjustments are being embedded in the DNG file. Meanwhile doing edits on NEF files continues to create .xmp files as expected.
I find .xmp files to be very useful and I'm wondering why they're missing with DNG files? Are they hiding somewhere other than in the same folder that the images reside in?
    Thanks.

    > The information contained in the XMP file is stored in the DNG file so there is no need for a separate file.
Aww, yuck!! That's a real drag...
When editing lots of files (yesterday's shoot produced 8GB) I back everything up to off-line storage and then, after doing all my edits and crops in ACR, I only have to copy over the small XMP files which takes no time at all.
So if I re-edit the DNG with ACR I have to re-copy ALL the files again to the off-line storage.
I used to sometimes even save 2 versions of the xmp files when I needed 2 different crops of the same images, such as doing a wide screen 'cinema' crop for a corporate client's Intranet presentation of their event, as well as more standard crops to be used for their newsletters.
Guess I won't be using DNG any more..
Thanks for the help Kees :-)

  • XMP file have Dream Weaver Logo

    Hello,
I work on my pictures with Camera Raw on NEF raw files. I wanted to edit lots of pictures taken under same light conditions. Therefore I just edited one file. Normally I could for exemple open the next file say " load settings" and chose the XMP file of the picture I just edited.
But now, I get an error message saying the the XMP file has no data in it (but if I open it as text, there is a lot written there). I notice that the file has the logo DW (Dream Weaver). On my other computer, the file open per default with Mac Script. I tried to change this, but it doesnt work. I don't get the error message, but none of the according settings neither...
    Is this a known issue?
    What can I do?
I work on Mac OS X 10.8.5 and I am customer of Adobe Creative Cloud (I work with Photoshop CC6).
Thanks a lot in advance for your help and hints!!

  • NMH410 some files have become inaccessible

The hardware: brand-new NMH410 with two WD 1TB drives, configured as RAID-1.
    The firmware: 3.18.15.
The clients: Linux 2.6.31 kernel, Kubuntu Karmic Koala
Over the past days I've copied over my media library to the NMH410 ... so far so good.
This day I face the strange situation that I get access denied to several files in my media/music subdirectories. I can see from my Linux clients that the files exist and I can also see that they should be readable. However, whenever I try to access these files, I get access denied.
Using the flash-based browser I can access these files, copy them around, et cetera. However, if I do make copies, then I cannot access these copies either. Seems to consistently getting the wrong access rights in the NMH410.
Resetting to factory defaults did not help either. Cleared the browser cache, reloaded. Disconnected SMB clients, attached them anew ... problem still persists. Most files are accessible, quite some audio files aren't anymore.
What am I doing wrong here? I'm totally dazzled.

The router isn't involved at all as the traffic is kept inhouse and traverses just a switch; plain level 2 business, no layer 3 involved. Rebooting linux (the kernel you mean?) is not required as the CIFS is nowadays more or less run in user space, if I remember correctly. Dropping mounts cleans up. No reboot or session logout required. Even almost all software package updates, even if they are concerning system daemons and libraries, are done without any reboot. Win7 has an extremely long road to travel to come even close. I have reasons to only use Linux. In office I get paid to loose time with XP. At home I want to be effective.
Oh, and as support was stubborn to insist on windows I grabbed my office laptop with WinXP and gave it a fresh try. Guess what: same result, who could have expected? You know, SAMBA is nowadays better in terms of compatibility between different SMB/CIFS protocol, server, and client versions than microsoft itself. In fact, SAMBA servers and clients on Linux are better at working around errors in Microsofts implementations than Microsofts code. No wonder that Microsoft is not able to document SMB properly, only the SAMBA project has delivered so far.
Together with a support person we found out that the NMH 410 is slowly killing itself by assigning wrong user/group ids to inodes -- well, basically I found that out and the support then more or less agreed and acknowledged. However, Linksys has no idea why the NMH is doing this. I got the advice to backup everything to a locally attached USB disk -- the only thing that worked at this point --, then to delete all files and to copy the files back.
While the backup procedure worked successfully, copying back resulted in complete desaster which even rendered the shared without access! The NMH 410 was, for whatever reason, changing ownership of the share directories to 0/0, thus rendering access impossible to the SAMBA server process. It seems that the webserver is running under root, arrrrgh! Bad design!
The next support person told me to remove the eSATA disks and to reformat them -- he probably meant to kill any partition setup. He didn't care about that I don't have any eSATA bays and interfaces at hand and don't want to drive to a shop just to buy then in order to get the self-hanging unit to work again. After he refused to help and insisted on me having to reformat the drives outside the NMH 410 I ignored his ignorance and phoned Syslink support.
The worked better and I was quickly told to try to completely reset the unit by powering off for more than 30s, then pressing reset and powering up, yet holding reset for more than 30s. I was told this should put the unit into disk repartition/reformat mode. Tried that two times, but the NMH 410 just came up (as expected) with only some settings reset, but the file system untouched and with the wrong owner/group settings. Still no access.
It seems that the problems started when I put the NMH 410 the second day after I purchased it from RAID-0 to RAID-1 with some data already on it. Thus, I put the unit back to single disc use, which causes the file system to be generated anew. This seems to be the only way to do it; two support persons didn't know this, only the third one was aware of this method albeit he suggested the non-working 30s reset procedure.
Finally converted the disks with the fresh file system to RAID-1 ... well, still waiting for the conversion to finish. After that will have finished, I will try to restore some files from the FAT32 USB disk, using FTP as suggested (eeek!). We will see.
After all the years this is the first Linux system I have come across that it killing access to it by randomly assigning wrong user/group ownerships to inodes. This seems to have required brilliant craftmenship by Linksys to make Linux behave in such a braindead manner. My confidence in Linksys and especially this product has totally gone away. Support is awful.

  • Reconnecting images (that have become placeholders with question marks)?

Images in document have been replaced by placeholders with question mark. When I check project file 'Show Package Contents' i see that the missing photos are still there.
Is there a way to re-link or re-connect the photos to their places in the document? Can't find anything in the manual. This is something that happens in many other apps. that I use, like Final Cut, but there is always an easy method of 'reconnection'.

Call AppleCare, because, according to Apple, removing the devices from your support profile should have fixed this issue. You can also try changing your Apple ID password, but given what you've done, I doubt this will help.

  • OT: Cataloguing audio files like LightRoom does with images

This is very off topic perhaps, so I apologise to start with.
I saw Lightroom in use on an acquaintance's computer and I was impressed by it's possibilities. I know Adobe does things with audio, but does Adobe have something like LR specially for audio files? Maybe people using Audition have an idea where I could look for anything like that? I especially liked the Folders and Collections views.
    Regards, Sander Stols

OK: Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is the very popular program that enables you to:
    1) catalog all your images by making a reference catalogue to them - it shows thumbnails you use to quickly identify the images and you can sort the catalog entries in many different useful ways;
    2) edit images with some advanced tools;
    3) make a slde show of selected images;
    4) print images in several kinds of formats; and
    5) publish images to the web.
I would like to be able to do this also with my audio collection. So essentially I am looking for a nice cataloguing program that accepts all kinds of audio formats (flac, ape, wav, mp3, mp4, ogg, etc.). I now only have a text catalog telling me where to find a specific audio file on my drives, but nothing in the way of an easy access to the file itself.
All the programs that I found on the internet were much restricted in one way or another: mostly they accepted mp3 only, and rarely could handle flac or ape.
    Thank you for your response.

  • My files have become hidden - how do I get at them?

I was trying to free up some space on my hard drive as I was showing only 3.5 out of 40GB available. I read a thread in this forum that suggested downloading whatsize to see what could be done away with. Whatsize showed a second user with my name but a . in front that was using up 17GB's. I logged off my computer - which I never do - to see if when I logged back on this other user would show up. Instead my screen had reverted to the way it looked when I first bought my ibook (new). The user name is mine and it responds to my password but I cannot find my photos, docs or music files. The hard drive is still showing as nearly full so I assume that the files are in here somewhere. I tried logging on as the root user - but I still could not find my files. Now I have purchased an external hard drive (250 GB's) - can I dump the entire contents of my drive onto the external drive and try to find the files that way? Please help me. I do not know where to look and I do not want to cause any further damage. Thanks for your time!
    ibook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Tamara:
In your first post in another thread, you said:
So I looked in the help menu to try to delete the user. It said to turn off filevault. I tried and was told I did not have enough diskspace.
Have you been able to do anything about turning FileWault off? I suspect that you were not able to, since FileVault saves your User Folder in a sparseimage which occupies as much space as your Users Folder. In order to be able to turn FileVault off, you need that much space more. This article gives you a bit more information about the issue.
Buying an external HDD is a good move. Actually that would have been my first recommendation. I hope that you bought a firewire external HDD, as you cannot make a bootable clone on a USB device. So, go ahead and clone your entire internal HDD to the external Firewire HDD using SuperDuper. SD will make a bootable clone from which you will later boot your computer.
(The . in front of your user name indicates it is a hidden file. It might be that your Home Folder was renamed, with a . in front of it. You can try downloading Wizzard and see if it shows your hidden folder. Note: This is a parenthesis; I suggest backing up and disabling FileVault first).
Post back and let me know how it is going, and we will see what comes next.
    Good luck.

  • Prints have become dark with a Brown hue

I had a hard drive crash which required a new hard drive, unfortunately unconfigured. With a techie's help I am up and running but my printer, Epson SPR1900, produces very dark images with a heavy brown overcast. I have a Dell Desktop running Windows 7, Dell Monitor, ,NVIDIA GeForce 220 graphics card with a new driver update. I have calibrated the monitor with my Spyder2 and use the following settings: Under EDIT >Color Settings>Custom. Working space>ProPhoto. VIEW>Proof Setup>Device to Simulate> SPR1900 Premium Glossy. PRINT (PS-CS6) Color Management ICM>off, No Color Management.. In Color Management, Color Handling>PS Manages Color. Printer Profile>SPR1900 Premium Glossy. Rendering is Relative Colorimetric. Prints still very dark with a marked brown overtone. What have I done wrong. Prints were beautiful before the hard drive crash.

Have you checked the printer for nozzle clog?

  • I have a problem with images

How can I transform an image object into a matrix of pixel? Can someone tell me how to do that, please?
    thanks

Turn it into a BufferedImage by creating a new BufferedImage of the required size, calling getGraphics on it, and drawImage'ing the original image onto it. You can access individual pixels using getRGB, and you can get the Raster and from that the DataBuffer underlying the BufferedImage.

  • Help! Cr2 Files have inexplicably reset themselves to their import state!

I am having a disastrous day at the office! I have discovered that 3 of my weddings shot this year, edited in Lightroom3 and since transferred to LR4, have lost all their develop history. All the xmp files are now dated with the date of the shoot and I am back to square one.
It is quite a bizarre situation. Here are a few points that don't add up.
    1. At some point before exporting i renumbered each project. Now, a couple of images that were obviously stacked with Tiff edits in the data base were not renamed. THESE FILES HAVE NOT LOST THEIR DEVELOPEMENT HISTORY!! I have the data for these files and the XMP files show the true date of the last edit. It's quite bizarre and unbelievably frustrating.
    2. One particular wedding was shot with a second shooter who happened to shoot NEF files on his Nikon. Again, these files are intact and safely have their edit information.
    3. With two of the weddings even the database entries were in correct, with the libraries showing the original file names and not the new renamed files
I wonder if any one else has come across this problem on their travels? As I say, I have recently upgraded to lightroom 4.3 and was about to further upgrade to 5 when I discovered this issue. For now that plan is on hold!
If anyone can advise on how to deal with this problem, perhaps whether the original develop data may be retrieved I would be mot grateful indeed , itherwise  there's a lot of rework to be done!!
    Many thanks.
    Phill
    P.S for your information I'm running on PC, Windows 7 64bit, Intel I7, 10gb Ram. LR4.3 and 3.6 and CS6

Have you finished editing your wedding photos from these three events and are now going back months later and noticing a problem, or are you still in the process of doing the final edits on them?
Are you saying that none of your catalog backups with the renumbered files have the edit history in them?  When is the earliest backup that comes after when you renamed the files, and do you have any backups between the time you imported and when you renamed the files?
So your situation is that all the files have been renamed but none (that have the problem) have any edits associated with them, even the edits from before you renamed them?  In other words do the files appear to be frozen in time from just after you renamed them or even the initial edits are gone, as if they had been reimported into LR, anew?  Do you somehow have two copies of each file, one the old name and one the new name?
I don’t think a catalog backup aborting would cause your current catalog to be corrupted, only the backup copy would be incomplete and perhaps LR deletes it if the backups stop early.
How imprecise and foggy are your memories about what you did with the files from these weddings?  It would seem to take more than one glitch at a moment in time to have the situation you have, now, but if you’re not all that sure what has happened in the past, then maybe you did a bunch of things in a row that effectively caused the issue or masked your seeing the issue for such a long time.

  • Create XMP files from existing edited files

I just learned I needed to have the box checked in the Prefs menu in order for LR to automatically write XMP files in the images' folder. Now I need to go and create XMP files for all the photos I have previously edited. How can I do that?

That worked this time. I read in the forums that's what I should do, but it wasn't working. No XMP files were showing up with the image files. I did a restart of LR, maybe that did it.
    Thanks!

  • .xmp file CS4

Is there any way to export the .XMP files that are associated with the MPEG2 DVD files without exporting the whole file...
I have a project that I set the chapter points in Premiere but did not name them.  So I exported the file as a MPEG2 DVD file and when I imported it into Encore it has no Chapter Points, which I think is because I did not name them in Premiere.  So for future reference is there any way to get those chapter points to show up in Encore without exporting the whole file again.  I would love to be able to just export the .xmp file.
    Any help would be appreciated...
    Thanks
    Phil

The .xmpses file contains the chapter information.  There is currently no way to create the file without a full MPEG2-DVD export.
However, I heartily agree that a method of exporting chapter information alone - usable in Encore with any video asset, not just those out of AME - is very much wanted and needed.
