XMP files location

I would like to safe the XMP files in the same location as the original raw files, so I can copy and backup them on different computers. How can I do that by default ?
Where on my pc is the location of the xmp files I created already for the different works I did? Can I copy them into the folder of my raw files and make lightroom read the xmp files from this new location ?

You create XMP files for RAW photos only by selecting the desired photos and then use the command Metadata->Save Metadata to Files. If the photo is not a RAW, then you would not get an XMP file, and the metadata is saved inside the photo file itself.
The changes you make are automatically saved to the Lightroom catalog. Therefore, if you are going to make backups of your work, you must make a backup (preferably by some automated process at regular intervals) of both your catalog file and your photos. XMP will never be a complete form of backup, the best you can say is that XMP can be a partial backup since it doesn't contain all of the information in the catalog file.
I don't now what you mean by "using the files on other locations", but in general to do this, you would use your catalog file (or a selected part of it)

XMP Files from MAC Not Reading On PC

My question is two-fold, so I apologize that this is long, but it will be best with the backstory:
I shoot Raw on a Canon 5DMIII and import my images into Lr5 on my PC as CR2 files. I am beginning to work with an editor for the post production of my images and upload my files to her via Dropbox. In effort to keep the files as small as possible (and upload/download times shorter), I export my images as DNGs. Specifically, I ensure the 'Use Lossy Compression' option is checked and the 'Embed Original Raw File' is unchecked. I then resize the image to 2000 pixels on the Long Edge and the overall file is under 1MB.
She then imports the DNG files into her iMac for editing also in Lr5. Prior to my exporting, I will edit a few images as sneak peeks for my clients, flag them as a 'pick' and code them as 'red'. When she imports my DNGs, she can see the 'red', but she cannot see the flagged images. Fine, this is something I can live without. She does her editing, also flagging them as a pick and coding them red. She then exports as the original file.
She then uses ExifTool, opens the terminal application and write in: "exiftool -xmp -b -w xmp -r", drags in the DNG files and exports the XMPs. She then sends the XMP files back to me, I place them into my folder with my original RAW files, tell my PC to 'replace' the XMP files that are already in the folder. Then in Lr5, I highlight all my files and select 'Read Metadata From File'.
Now, initially, nothing happens. I am unable to see any images flagged or coded red. However, I do see the 'attention' icon (I'm sure that is not the right name for it) on the upper right corner of the images she has edited when in the library module. If I click on it, it tells me that the MetaData has conflicting information and do I want the file or catalog to be primary. I click on the 'file' option and only then do I see her edits, including the 'red' coding (but not flagged as 'pick').
Part 1 Questions: Why when I am instructing it to 'Read the MetaData From File' is it not automatically picking up her edits? Am I doing something incorrectly when I put the XMPs back in the original folder with the RAW images and have the XMPs replace the originals? Is it normal for the 'pick' flags to not transfer?
Part 2 Questions: When she edits my images, she creates a virtual copy and creates one color and one b+w of each image for my clients. As such, she sends me back two XMP files for one image. How do I get these 2nd XMPs to map to the virtual copy within my library, as I am only creating the virtual copy of an image once I know it is one she selected for the final gallery. If I create a virtual copy of an image she edited after-the-fact, the b+w XMP cannot locate it.

I never tried this, but I'm pretty sure that with DNG files, Lightroom will ignore xmp files, even when you instruct Lightroom to "Read Metadata from File". Lightroom expects all the metadata to be in the DNG file, not in the xmp file.
Pick flags, as far as I know, are never written to xmp file; nor are they written to DNG files.
If you're going to make this transfer procedure work, you need to do it by either (a) embedding the metadata in the DNG file and send those back and forth; or (b) use RAW and xmp and then sending the xmp files back and forth (plus I guess you have to transfer the original RAW once to your editor)

XMP files not moved

I have searched the fourm and there are a couple of responses to similar questions, but I I can't seen to find how to move the XMP files when I drag a folder of photos from one external drive to another external drive.
I drag the folder with 500 photos over the photos go but I get a message saying the following files did not transfer and its all my XMP files for the images I transfered. How can I get the folders and the edits to transfer from a 500gb to a 4TB external hard drive

Lr creates XMP-files only for Raw images - although the box in >catalog Settings >Metadata tab speaks of " ... write changes to XMP>.
But true XMP-files in the sense of side-car files, i.e a separate little file that sites next to its image file are only created in the case of Raw images. In the case of JPGs, TIFFs, PSDs the changes are written into the header of the file (but not in the image pixels!) and a separate xmp-file is not created.
Lr saves changes to XMP (i.e. writes the changes into the header of JPGs, TIFFs, PSDs and creates separate "true" xmp-files for Raw images) only if you do this either manually (by pressing Ctrl / Cmd + S / or doing >Metadata >Save Metadata to file) or by checking the box <Automatically write changes to XMP> in >Catalog Settings >Metadata tab.
I you do neither of these, Lr will not save to XMP and will not create xmp side-car files for Raw images.
My remark about <Show hidden files> was not meant for Lr. What I meant was that you move the files in your OS (Mac Finder / Win Explorer); and in Win Explorer is an option to <Show Hidden Files> under >Tools >Folder Options >View tab.
If you move images in your OS Lr will show the old folder with a question mark and will show images as "missing". You then have to re-link Lr to the new location of the images.

Since it seems to work now, better stay with moving images from within Lr - until you understand the issues involved in moving images in your OS.

Local adjustment brush, not in XMP file

Local adjustment brush, not in XMP file
I shoot everything on location and make minor edits while on location. My location edits usually transfer with the XMP file. I used the new local adjustment tool while on location, however when I got back to my main workstation and transferred the images the local adjustments were not there. Can this be fixed somehow, as it would be nice to only make those edits only once? I do not use as a catalog program, once the job is complete it is removed from the lightroom catalog so again those local adjustments are gone.

The problem may be and I am only guessing here that because no other program
currently supports the adjustment brush options that that information is not
added to XMP file. Not even Photoshop or ACR supports that as of yet. Though
I honestly would have expected that information to be there anyways it would
just be ignored by programs that don't know what to do with (basically
everything but LR 2.0).
Have you tried using DNG files. From what I understand an XMP file it not
needed as the information that is normally in a XMP file in kept inside of
the DNG file. This maybe another reason to go with the DNG format.

Physcially export XMP files

Hello,
I have lightroom 5 on windows 7. My boss and I couldn't get smart previews to work a few days ago so he sent me his NEF files with XMP files. I imported them, made my edits, and sent the XMP back to him again. I have the option "automatically write changes into XMP" checked and I have done "cntrl -s" several times to force Lightroom to write the changes. However, when my boss syncs the XMP there are no edits that I have made. Can I physially make Lightroom generate new XMP with my changes?

Ideas of what might be wrong:
You’re doing Save Metadata to File (singular) rather than Save Metadata to Files (plural). Right-clicking on one of the selected thumbnails in the thumbnail bar or library grid is enough to do all Files, not just the image right-clicked on.
The permissions of the files are not read/write for your user, due to how the copy was done, so the XMP files cannot be updated. I would expect an error message in this situation but I’m not sure if LR does or not.
My #1 guess would be that the type of import you did was not an Add, which it should have been, but a Copy, and as such the images and XMPs you’re looking at are still his original files rather than your copy of them that got moved to another location. You can right-click on one of your images and do Show in Explorer and see where yours are.
Do an Export with Original as the filetype with your copy of his images selected to some other folder in and see if you get better XMPs this time.

Why is Bridge creating XMP files in CS6?

I'm using the CS6 beta on a new set of photos. All I've done so far is batch rename all the files (all raw, all CR2) and edited the IPTC metadata - to add my name, the project name, etc. Now I've got a side-car file for every photo. CS5 just included this stuff in the original file, why not CS6?

The 'Camera Raw Database' is written to a local directory on your machine, and won't travel (without an extra step) if you copy the CR2 file to another machine. If you use DNG then the metadata will be stored in the file.
If you store the camera raw settings in the Camera Raw database and plan to move the files to a different location (CD, DVD, another computer, and so forth), you can use the Export Settings To XMP command to export the settings to sidecar XMP files.
You may have been using, and wanting, sidecar .xmp files, but just had them hidden in previous Bridge versions. To hide the .xmp file from the Content panel's display, go to View> Show Hidden Files and toggle the checkmark OFF, by selecting it.

How to import Raw + xmp files

Running OS 10.4.11 and recent 2.1.4 upgrade for Aperture. I successfully imported my images from my Nikon D300 and now have a folder on my desktop with my assistants RAW Canon D20 and D40 images with xmp sidecars.
I have updated all raw upgrades and still cannot see his images to import them out of the folder. Can anyone help me out? Does Aperture not import sidecars or recognize images with sidecars? (I have the do not import duplicates unchecked)

Where did the xmp files come from, ie. what app have they already been in?
What is the file extension?
Can the files be recognised in preview or any other program.
Should not make a difference but have your tried moving the folder to anther location other than the desktop, I have imported many images from the desktop so would doubt this, but need to cover all bases.
Can you drag the folder from the desktop into Aperture?
Have fiels been renamed since coming from the camera?
Can you rename a single file and see if AP sees it?
Took me a few lines but I think I have the answer, given they are from a 20D and 40D are the files Canon sRAW? If so they are not compatible with Aperture!

Lightroom LR2 File Locations

Please brief me again on the file locations and what they contain.
What I know:
Lightroom 2 Catalog - Location: whereever I put it. Contains?(edits?, metadata?, keywords?, thumbnails?)
Lightroom 2 Catalog Previews.lrdata - Location: Inside the Lightroom 2 Catalog folder, above. Contains?(previews? which ones/standard/1:1?).
My computer died last month and I do have backups of the above two folders plus my original images. if I re-install LR2 on my new machine and then put my backed up files back into the locations specified in or change preferences to their proper locations, do I pick up all my data, edits?, metadata?, keywords?, thumbnails?. previews?.
I have not made exported .XMP's for most of my images, but I have all the folders and want to re-use the Catalog file, not go to a new Catalog file.

Thanks, JB. My pictures were originally on an external drive J: The parent folder right off the root of J was Picture Folder. Everything I own was under that. I moved that entire structure, as is, to internal drive E: E:\Picture Folder My new machine is up and running, sans figuring out the printer and also connecting my scanner. The internal drives are C: and E: (D: is the CD rom drive). The externals (2) have repositioned themselves to F: and G: but are only used to recopy stuff onto E: I have 're-located', manually, about 3-4 LR folders' images on E: Based on our conversation, I have also put two images in E:\Picture Folder and imported them. What I found was that LR imported those images AND moved the 3-4 folders that I had manually linked under Picture Folder. It did not, however, re-locate/link all the other folders at the same level as Picture Folder, and all of those are marked with "?" marks. That's where I am so far. My disconnect is how all my other LR folders, which are not 'under' a Picture Folder in LR, rather are all independent, are going to know that -their- image files are located under E:\Picture Folder. e.g. Current LR folders/structure-(all top level folders, now manually re-located/linked) 20080101_NewYearsDay 20080331_VTTrip 20080704_4thOfJulyFireworks others not yet re-located/linked <sample names...> 20080801_shoot 20080901_shoot 20081001_shoot 20081101_shoot 20081201_shoot --------------------------- Current E: internal hard drive Picture Folder structure- Picture Folder\ \Picture Folder\01Family_Miller\20080101_NewYearsDay \Picture Folder\01Family_Miller\20080704_4thOfJulyFireworks \Picture Folder\20Vacations_Trips_Parties\20080331_VTTrip --------------------------- Now, after the importing I performed about, LR library structure now looks like... Importing geotagged jpeg and raw photos with xmp files issue

I had a folder of photos (all unique, no dupes) from two different cameras. Some were .jpg and some .cr2 (raw). I used an external app on my Mac 10.6.x called PhotoLinker to geotag the photos based on gpx track files. I wrote the metadata out to .xmp files, done by that app. So then I had a folder with .jpg, .cr2 and .xmp files I then moved them to another volume and did an Import Move operation in LR3. For the raw images, all went fine. The images were pulled into LR and they each had the geotagged data for location. But for the jpeg images they were imported into the catalog in LR but none of them had any geotagged data for the location.
Can someone let me know if they have encountered this problem and what they did about it? Is this a bug?
I even selected one of the JPG files in LR grid view, then did a read of the metadata from a file. The upper left corner displayed that the metadata file was being loaded from XMP. But again, no geotagged information. If I load that same .xmp file back into PhotoLinker it shows the geotagged data still there.
What gives? Why is this happening?

That strikes me as really odd. I realize that jpgs can have metadata within the image file and maybe the issue for LR is which does it consider to have priority. However, if so, why not present a dialog asking the user?
I would suggest Adobe plan on filling the gapping hole LR has when it comes to geotagging support. It currently provides very minimal support.

XMP Files missing/not saved?

Please pardon the post of this redundant - I searched and couldn't find anything that helped...
I'm using Lightroom 2.6 on Windows Vista. I've toggled the xmp switch so that XMP files should be saved.
I make changes to metadata - primarily keywords, location, captions, etc., and when I go to the folder where the images are stored, there are no xmp files. I did a hard drive search for *.xmp and found old files from a LRv1 catalog, but not for those files I just edited.
Other than the Edit Catalog Settings Metadata switch, is there some other place these files could be written to?

For raw camera files LR will create .xmp files and for the others, dng, jpeg, tiff the data is stored within the actual file.

"Automatically Write Changes into XMP" Not Saving XMP Files

I tried finding some other discussions on this but I couldn't seem to find anything...
I recently checked the "Automatically Write Changes into XMP" setting in my "Catalog Settings". However, as I continue to add pictures to my library and make changes, I do *not* see the XMP files being written to the location of the pictures (Nikon NEF files located on my hard-drive). In fact, I can't find the XMP files anywhere. If I want to output the XMP files I have to do a Ctrl + S (Photo --> Save Metadata to File).
I did notice that when I unchecked the setting and re-checked it, *some* of the XMP files showed up. However, in my import of 24 photos, only 14 had XMP files. I had to manually "Save Metadata to File" to get the XMP sidecar files to show.
Am I doing something wrong? Is something not working right? I'm a bit confused. I assumed it would automatically export the sidecar files.
How often should it be outputting XMP sidecards? If I import a new image should the XMP sidecar file be created? Or is it created the first time I change an original picture?
I am using Adobe Lightroom 2.0 (Camera Raw 4.5) on a Mac OS X 10.5.5.

@Eric: hitting cntrl+s works but can be tedeous on large galleries. I've been doing this but it can be a pain.
@Jeannine: different topic than this thread but to answer anyways... Lightroom automatically saves all changes into your catalogue. You never need to dave your changes (here's the kicker though) as long as you do not move the original file. If you
move the file than lightroom won't know that it's the same image as the one you've edited. Once you are done editing your image you will need to "export" the image to a new file (you don't wan to overwrite the original). If you don't export than only lightroom will have your edits. Lightroom is "non-destructive" Which means that it doesn't touch your original photo. Lightroom keeps a text file containing the instructions on what you did to make the edited version. Since your changes are just text inatryxtions you have to "export" the image to get your final image in a version you can put online, print, etc. But to answer your original question, I think you prob moves the original image. If not, could you give us more info?

LR5 and xmp files on import

Hi,
I have the trial of LR5 and I trid now to geotag my pictures. To do so, I convert the .gpx file to xmp with geosetter. The XMP are created but when I import them into LR, the GPS position is not imported. But If I embed the GPS info into the raw files (cr2) the position is imported but I'd like to keep the raw file untouched so this is why I use the XMP.
When I try to "update metadata" it's not working.
So how can I make lightroom to read the xmp files on import ????

Why do I all of a sudden have xmp files?

I'm using Lightroom 5.6. For the first time I'm noticing xmp files in my file folders next to my images and in LR I notice these images now have "Sidecar File" listed under File Name in the Library's Metadata box. For all the year I've used Lightroom I've never had xmp files? What is it? Do I need it? and what do I do with it? What if I move some files out of a folder and into a different location, so I always have to make sure I also move the xmp file with it?
Any help greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the link! I've read it and it kinda opens a whole new can of worms for me. So if I understand correctly the xmp file stores Metadata because a .CR2 file cannot store the metadata inside of it. And the storage of this information with the file is necessary if you make metadata changes in Lightroom, and then later want to open that file in a different program. So if I ever decide to reorganize some of my raw files in Mac's Finder folders than all I have to do is make sure I move the xmp file along with it? Not separate them? And then my other question is does the xmp file also store the changes I made in developer? Like the white balance, exposure, lens corrections, etc...?

Making copies of RAWs and XMP files of select images into a new folder

I have a group of 120 or so select images from a group of 3000, the selects
three starred and red labeled. Now I would like to make a copy of those
select RAW files and their XMP files and place in a new folder in order to
burn a DVD of just those selects. How do I do this with LR? Export doesn't
seem to offer this option, I can't seem to copy and paste like a typcial
folder operation. I can drag the selects to another existing folder but
then it moves them from their original location.
Any help appreciated.

Not currently from Within LR. Among other things Drag and Drop out of LR, which give you a copy w/o XMP sidecar on a Mac, is broken for Windows.
You have to do it in Explorer.

Adobe XMP Files not deleted with Raw Files in ACR

I am using Photoshop CS3 on a Windows XP platform. My camera raw files are mostly kept on a Windows 2003 file server, which has a gigabit connection to my workstation. However, I have the same problems when using PS CS3 on my Windows XP laptop.
I take many hundreds of 'technical' photographs using an Olympus E1 and Canon G9 cameras. I usually bracket the exposures on the E1, specially when photographing white painted yachts, and then rate and select the images that I want in ACR 4.1.1. Unwanted images are deleted at this time.
The problem I am having is that the associated *.xmp files are not always deleted with the camera raw files, with the result that I now have literally thousands of these 'orphaned' files cluttering up the server. The only options I have are to delete the files manually, which is a pain, or to leave them on the server, wasting unnecessary space.
I have the same issue with Canon and Nikon raw files, so this problem is not specific to Olympus files.
This is a long standing problem, and I would be grateful if anyone has any answers?
If any Adobe programmers are watching, it would be handy if you could provide a simple utility to delete orphaned *.xmp files, or at least compress them into some kind of archive.

That is not quite correct. Camera RAW files can be permanently deleted from within Adobe Camera Raw. The problem with ACR 4.1 to 4.4 4 was that the XMP files were left behind. This now seems to have been rectified in the latest version (ACR 4.5).
