I never tried this, but I'm pretty sure that with DNG files, Lightroom will ignore xmp files, even when you instruct Lightroom to "Read Metadata from File". Lightroom expects all the metadata to be in the DNG file, not in the xmp file.
Pick flags, as far as I know, are never written to xmp file; nor are they written to DNG files.
If you're going to make this transfer procedure work, you need to do it by either (a) embedding the metadata in the DNG file and send those back and forth; or (b) use RAW and xmp and then sending the xmp files back and forth (plus I guess you have to transfer the original RAW once to your editor)

I edited a .nef file in Camera Raw and PSE 11 saved it as a .xmp file.  I cannot open it now.
I am not sure if this is an issue but Windows does not recognize the .xmp file and give it an icon with the photo's picture.  On a related note, when I edited some .nef files and Windows saved it as .dng file, it too, like the .xmp file, Windows does not recognize the .dng file and give it an icon with the photo's picture.
Do I need to download something to create this icon?

PSE didn't save your file as an .xmp file. The .xmp file is not the image--that's still the .nef. The xmp file is what adobe calls a 'sidecar' file, just a record of the settings you used in the raw converter. As long as it's in the same place as the image, when you open the nef in ACR again, it will open where you left off, with the settings you chose.
If you want to save as, you have two choices:
    1. Click the Open button in the raw converter window and save in the image format of your choice.
    2. Use the Save button in the raw converter to create a separate DNG file, which still must be opened in the raw converter and converted to an image format for use in other programs.

  • With Lightroom 4 I can't read any .DNG files directly into Photoshop CS. I have camera raw 2.4

With Lightroom 4 I can't read any .DNG files directly into Photoshop CS. I have"camera raw 2.4" selected in LR and the Plug-in for CS is Camera Raw.8BI.
Any suggestions on what to do? Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Have you tried a different DNG converter? Adobe released Adobe DNG Converter 5.3 in March of this year. Maybe, if it supports your camera, this version will create a more compatible file.

  • DNG files display artifacts in Lightroom but not in Camera Raw

I've been scratching my head over this one for a few days so hopefully someone here can help.  Some of my dng images are showing artifacts in Lightroom 3, see attached file as an example.  However, if I open these images in Camera Raw 5.7 the artifacts are gone!  The artifacts are also gone when I view the DNG in Windows Live Photo Gallery. The images are stored on a gigabit network server with the LR catalog file on the local Win 7 PC.  One other thing I noticed is that for some images (not all) the artifacts will show up in the Library module but disappear when viewed in the Develop module. There are no "damaged file" error messages for Lightroom when viewing the affected files.  I tried clearing out the Camera Raw Cache but nothing changed.
So my questions are:  Are these files damaged or not? Is there a way to fix this problem. Why are they showing up fine in other image programs?  Is there a utility that can verify the integrity of a suspect DNG file?

  • Win XP, PS CS2, Camera Raw 3.7 = can't open Sony A300 ARW files

    Hello,
As I wrote in the title, I have windows XP with SP3, Photoshop CS2 (9.0), Camera Raw 3.7 but I can't open my ARW files in Photoshop and I can't see them in Bridge. I installed Camera Raw properly as I saw in instructions. Then I cleaned cache in Bridge but it didn't help. Then I downloaded DNG converter + Camera raw and repeated procedure. Again, nothing. I can't convert ARW to DNG format. Any suggestion? Except to install CS4 (I have PS installed on my office PC and there's no way that I could get CS4). Thanks for any help .
    Have a nice day!
    R.

Thanks for your answer. When I wrote that I followed the instructions I realy meant that (I'm programmer in RL so it's not so strange to me )
    I removed existing file from
    Program Files/Common Files/Adobe/Plug-Ins/CS2/File Formats
and extracted new file into the same location.
After that I opened Adobe Bridge and purged central cache.
When I started Photoshop and took a look at plugins, I've noticed that I use camera raw 3.7, not 3.0 as it was before. So I was sure that I did it correctly.
    But it didn't help.
Then I downloaded Adobe DNG Converter and Camera Raw 3.7 update from here http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=3588&fileID=3378 and did the same. Without any success. You write that I should use DNG converter 5.6. I didn't see that version on CS2 list, so I thought that it's not compatible.
Thanks again Jeff for your help.

  • In bridge i select a jpg image with cntrl r to open in camera raw but get "camera raw not avail"

In bridge i select a jpg image with cntrl r to open in camera raw but get "camera raw not available"  camera raw editing requires that a qualifying product has been launched at least once to enable this feature.  I can open nef. in camera raw with no problem.

Hm, what I suggested might actually be a possibility then...
Close whatever version you have open first...
I think Adobe installs shortcuts for both 32 and 64 bit Photoshop in the start menu.
If you can't find the 32 bit Start menu entry, look for the 32 executable here (changing the CS version number to whatever yours is):
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Photoshop.exe

  • Can you help with the moire adjustment tool in Camera Raw?

I have a file with a lot of moire on a child's dress and am having problems using camera raw moire adjustment tool.
I opened a jpeg file (not raw) in camera raw. When I use the moire adjustment brush - set to +100 - and click on the eyeglass tool in the window to see the effect - it shows a white overlay.
Clicking the preview button doesn't show up any difference.
I have saved several files as tests but the moire remains unaltered.
Any help appreciated.  Or alternatively, suggestions on how to deal with Moire in Photoshop.
    Thank you.

If possible deal with the moire issues up front.  If you have original re-scan to see if you can reduce effect.  If not do a web search for this.  There are several tutorials listed such as http://photographylife.com/how-to-remove-moire-in-photoshop
    Hope this helps.

  • NEF files aren't working in the newly updated Camera Raw nor in CS6.

I'm using the Nikon D600. It says it supports it. Did all the updates and still not working! Any clues as to what the problem might be?

    Hi,
Do you mean updated to the 8.4 RC plug-in?
    http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2014/02/camera-raw-8-4-rc-and-dng-converter-8-4-rc -now-available.html
If so, do note that it is not compatible with older OS versions:
"This release candidate has dropped support for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Mac OSX 10.6 for Photoshop CS6 (and CC) customers."
If you need help getting back to ACR 8.3, let me know.

  • DNGs produced from Hasselblad .fff files display a different image in Bridge and Camera Raw

Lately, not sure when this started exactly, Bridge CC (and Camera RAW 8.7) are displaying incorrect DNG images!  Instead of showing the image I expect to see, I'll see an old image from days ago.  This seems to carry on from Bridge through to Camera RAW.  But then if I continue on to Photoshop with the image, it'll finally show the correct image.
I'm assuming this has something to do with DNG, because if I load another raw file type (like .fff or .NEF), it seems ok.  Also it seems to be ok with DNGs produced from other cameras like Nikon D90.
    My set up:
    - Mac OS X 10.9.5 (Mavericks)
    - Bridge CC
    - Camera Raw 8.7
    - Photoshop CC 2014
    - Hasselblad H4D-50

HI, I managed to fix the trouble by reinsatalling once again and running updates BEFORE opening bridge. It seemed that if I ran the update AFTER opening bridge I would get either an up to date status when checking for updates or I would get an install failure notice on all 4 updates that were trying to install. The updates were for camera raw, bridge and PS. I can't explain why but that helped a little. I also changed permissions on my whole user accnt to include read/write for all users. I can't say if this helped or not. I also had to go into my camera B/U files on a sepate HD and replace some of the CR folders I was using o nthe desktop. Still the CR files would not show a thumb nor a preview till I then went to each individual file inside that folder and purged the cashe for that file so it could repopulate the cashe yet again. This has been the strangest few days in PSCS6 history! Well my personal history. I will report back here if more quirks emerge. I would prefer quarks though....aloha, U

  • I can't preview RAW files in Bridge CS5 or open them in Camera Raw

I've been using Photoshop CS5, Bridge and Camera Raw 6.7 with no problems whatsoever.  I recently upgraded the OS on my MacBook Pro to 10.8.5 and can no longer preview RAW files in Bridge, or open them in Camera Raw.
I've downloaded the Adobe DNG converter, but would much prefer to using my existing workflow if possible.
Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance for any help!

Adobe doesn't support CS5, an when I spoke to Apple, I was told that this is a known issue with OS 10.8.5 and that they're working on a patch.  In the meantime I'm using Adobe's DNG as a workaround.
Have not heard before of this Known Issue, also find it hard to believe being true. But can't test my self because I only have CS6 and CC installed and always use Photodownloader to convert to DNG upon import. I have just installed the 10.8.5 update and checked in Bridge CC pointing to an attached card reader. no problem in showing the CR2 thumbs, it works as always and as expected.
To my knowledge Bridge CS5 is already 64 bits and I can't think of any valid reason why an OS update would cause this problem so suddenly (but I'm not a technician I have to confess…)
However, I would first try a check and repair permissions from Apple Disk Utility and also try Cocktail (good and cheap 3th party maintenance application for Mac) to clear caches and check permissions.
Also try a new user account just for testing to rule out your current account as the culprit.

  • Elements 10 - camera raw 6.7.0.339 - sony alpha NEX-6 file-id: ARW

    Hallo,
my elements 10 can not read the raw-files ARW produced by my NEX-6-camera.
What shall I do to work with these raw-files.
    Thanks in advance
    [email protected]

You would need to convert your ARW raw files to Adobe raw DNG to use in PSE10. Otherwise upgrade to PSE11 or preferably the latest version PSE12.

  • Why will Camera Raw 6.7.1 in CS5 not recognize Raw files from a Sony DSC RX100M3?   The Camera Raw site indicates this camera is covered.

I have a new Sony DSC RX100M3 and Camera Raw (6.7.1) in Photoshop CS5 (on a Mac) will not recognize the Raw files from this camera.  What must I do?

    Well, I guess the sentence
The table below lists all cameras that the Camera Plug-in (versions 1.0 through 8.5) supports.
could be interpreted to mean that even version 1 supports all those cameras’ raw formats.
    And even the sentence
This powerful plug-in has been frequently updated to support more cameras and include more features and is available as part of Adobe Photoshop CC.
which should make clear that older versions of Camera Raw usually support fewer cameras does not unambiguously make clear that only the most recent full version of Camera Raw is being updated.
So I kind of understand how you arrived at your assumption.

  • I bought a Nikon D610 and just tried to upload a RAW file to photoshop CS5 and was not able to.  It said CS5 doesn't support the new file and to update it.  I downloaded camera raw 6 4 1 update and it still doesn't work.  Am I missing a step?

    I

Unfortunately, Photoshop CS5 is not going to be able to open your D610 files directly.
The camera is newer than the latest update for your version of the software.  Adobe stopped updating older versions to be able to read raw files from newer cameras when they released a new major version of Photoshop. Photoshop CS5 is no longer receiving Camera Raw updates.
To double check this yourself, using Adobe documentation:
First you need to determine whether Adobe has released support for your new camera in your version of Photoshop. To do that, look at these two pages. You'll want to find out the earliest version of Camera Raw that can support your camera, then what version of Photoshop can run that version of Camera Raw.
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
Since your version of Photoshop cannot support your camera, you can download and install the latest version of the free Adobe DNG Converter, which can take your raw files as input and put out DNG format files, which your version of Photoshop can then open.
Photoshop Help | Digital Negative (DNG)
The DNG converter does work, but if you want maximum quality from your new camera's raw files (not to mention the convenience and ease of use of directly opening your raw files) you may want to consider upgrading to the latest version of Photoshop. Adobe has made substantial improvements in raw conversion quality in recent years.
