XMP with Broadcast Wave iXML and BEXT chunks

Hi.
For feature film workflows, we depend greatly on the iXML and BEXT chunk in broadcast wave files.
As far as I can see, the XMP metadata "engine" (don't know of a better word) doesn't "see" the iXML and BEXT chunk in broadcast wave files.
Is XMP going to support and "pull" from iXML and BEXT chunks in the near future?

Hi,
the XMP SDK does support read/write of the BEXT chunk in WAVE files since CS6, i.e. the current version of the SDK supports this functionality.
For more details on the mapping to XMP, please see the XMP specification part III, section 2.3.2.2.
There have been requests about iXML in the past, but so far not strong enough that it made it to the top of the priority list

Jörg

  • Premiere Pro Metadata & iXML/BEXT for Broadcast WAV files

    Hi.

As far as I can see, the XMP metadata "engine" (don't know of a better word) doesn't "see" the iXML and BEXT chunk in broadcast wave files.
Is there a particular workflow/workaround where the iXML and BEXT metadata show up in the "Metadata" tab in Premiere Pro.
    Thanks!

I know there is a plug-in that allows FLAC files to be played in iTunes, so I'm wondering if there is some kind of 3rd party app that could solve this WAV metadata issue?
I have never heard of such a plug-in, and kind of doubt there is one, but perhaps a search would turn something up.
By the way, iTunes does not "lose" the tag data, it just fails to display or do anything with it. The tag data is still there if you use that same WAV file in another program.
Or am I just running into a brick wall here?
    Maybe.
The more typical way to use WAV files is to embed the relevant information into the filename, which is always available. In iTunes, for any file which it thinks has no tags, the exact filename is displayed in the Name field.

  • XMP Schema for WAV files

    Hi,
I am planning to use XMP metadata for WAV files and I would like to create a Schema for the same. I know that that XMP has schemas for other Formats like TIFF and EXIF. If there is a XMP schema for WAV already(probably the Adobe Audition uses it), I would like to use it; else, I have to create a custom XMP WAV schema.

    Greetings,
Since a WAVE file is actually a simple RIFF file format, I think it should fit into my proposal for embedding XMP data in RIFF files (I already posted it somewhere else in this forum). (For WAVE schemas, thats another story)...
p.s: I have not had any comment from Adobe on this proposal, either they don't read this forum or they don't care...
    Comments?
I have the same proposal for IFF files (AIFF/ILBM etc) if you wish to have it?
    Here follows the specification:
Embedding XMP data into IBM-Microsoft RIFF file formats
    =====================================================================
This proposal permits adding XMP compatible metadata to standard
RIFF files. A RIFF file is composed of chunks of data; each of
the chunks precedeed by a header giving the type of data that
follows, as well as the length of the data in the chunk. For
more information on the RIFF file format, consult the specification
"Multimedia Programming Interface and Data Specifications 1.0"
Including XMP data in an RIFF compatible file is a matter
of adding a subchunk to the INFO LIST chunk. The subchunk
ID for this type of date shall be "IXMP".
    Guidelines for RIFF writers
If the XMP packet is to be used, the software can optionally
write out all other INFO LIST registered (from the standard),
    assuming the following mapping:
    IRSC dc:creator
    ICRD dc:date
    ICMT dc:description
    ICOP dc:rights
    IKEY dc:subject
    INAM dc:title
    IGNR dc:type
    IARL dex:source
In the case where they are written, for better validation by reader
software, the XMP packet should also contain the xmp:MetadataDate
    property.
For better portability, and to easily modify the embedded
XMP data, the following guidelines should be followed by
    the RIFF writer:
    - The XMP packet should contain the full packet signature;
this permits easier searching for tools that do not
    understand the RIFF file format.
    - The XMP packet should be encoded in UTF-8.
    - As specified in the XMP specification, an XMP packet
should be filled with blank spaces for easier updating of
the XMP packet without rewriting the entire file.
A suggested size of an XMP chunk is 4096 or 8192 bytes.
    - Only one "IXMP" chunk should be present in the INFO LIST
chunk. Preferrably, there should only be one INFO LIST
    chunk per file.
    Guidelines for RIFF readers
If an XMP packet is present in an RIFF file, then one of
the following options can be used to retrieve the
    metadata from the file:
If the existing metadata chunks are also present,
then, one of the following solutions can be used:
    a) Compare the xmp:MetadataDate property with the
file modification date to determine which chunk to use
: either the IXMP subchink or the other info subchunks.
(If the file modification date is greater than
xmp:MetadataDate, it is probably safe to assume that
the standard metadata chunks might have been updated
    by software that does not
    understand XMP packets).
    b) Simply ignore these chunks and use the XMP
    packet for the metadata.
    c) Simply ignore the XMP chunk , and use the
other chunks for getting the metadata of the file.

  • Does Premiere support .BWF audio files (Broadcast WAV)?

I'm considering the purchase of a Fostex FR-2LE portable digital audio recorder. It records in only two formats, Broadcast WAV (.BWF and MP3). Can I import these BWF files directly to the Premiere CS3 timeline for editing? I can find no mention of BWF format in the Premiere or Audition manuals, but the literature for Audition CS3 states support. My version of Audition is 1.5.

  • Issue with Broadcasting and Publish query to Portal from query Designer

    Dear all,
I have created a standard template ZWT_STANDARD_TEMPLATE in WAD and I have added this for Adhoc Analysis in 'Set Standard Web templated' RSCUSTV27.
For Broadcasting I have added 0BROADCASTING_TEMPLATE70.
I have problems with my broadcasting as well as publishing the Query in Portal.
When I use a Broadcast to Email - it opens a new window with my standard template(ZWT_STANDARD_TEMPLATE ) I have added. No data though.
Same thing happens for publishing too...When I publish the query to portal from Query Designer or WAD it takes me to the same window with my standard web template. No data though.
I think both are related to the same issue. Its with broadcasting.
What is the default template for Broadcasting in NW2004s? Below is the url I have included when I do it from Query designer. Its actually starting the Command - START_BROADCASTER70 but I dont know if it has to do a SOURCE_QUERY=ZCOPA_C03_FAST_PAYABLES. Could anyone compare it with your urls

  • Having trouble with wav files and sample rates

Hi ,I am having trouble with wav files and sample rates .I have been sent multiple projects on wav as the main instrumental ; I wish to record in 48.000kHz .Now comes the problem. When I try to change the project to 48k It seems to pitch up the track.I can't have them send the logic/project file as most have outboard synths, different plug ins etc. This particular case the producer has recorded the synth task in 41.000 kHz .My successful outcome would be to be able t create a project file in 48 kHz .And NOT pitch up whne I add the instrumenta wav file .Any help would be gratefully recieved, this is my first post so any mistakes I may have made go easy

You'll have to convert the actual synth audio file file that the producer gave you to 48kHz. You can do this in the audio Bin in Logic.

  • RIFF handler bug--incorrect size on bext chunk

I have a WAV file that had a bext chunk in it--the first one after the header.  I then added XMP data to the file, and noticed that the first chunk after the bext chunk is JUNK.  That's all fine, but the size of the bext chunk is now one byte shorter than it should be, so when scanning the chunks in the file based on chunk size, it's coming up one byte short and throwing everything off.  All the other chunks in the file are sized correctly.
I'd attach the files if I could.  If any Adobe staff want a look at them let me know and I'll email them.

Brent sent me the testfiles per mail.
the sizes are  as expected. We follow the official riff specification that requires the RIFF chunks to be WORD aligned by adding a padding byte to odd length data. This byte is not included in the chunk Size. You have to skip a byte if you find an odd chunksize.
GFF Format Summary: Microsoft RIFF from an O'Reilly book:
"ChunkData contains data that is WORD-aligned within the RIFF file. If the data is an odd length in size, an extra byte of NULL padding is added to the end of the data. The ChunkSize value does not include the length of the padding."
AVI RIFF File Reference from the Microsoft site:
"The data is always padded to nearest WORD boundary. ckSize gives the size of the valid data in the chunk; it does not include the padding, the size of ckID, or the size of ckSize."

  • Broadcast Wav files from PT to Logic not moving to original record position

Okay, my system needs upgrading but I'm stable (at least I think I am til now!) I have a TV network sending me broadcast wav files from PT. They shoot their video on a 24 hour clock. I'm to be editing and mixing (in Logic) their audio tracks from PT and send them back as broadcast wav files for them to sync back to their video. After years and years of recording and producing music, this TV world is a first for me. 2 issues at hand that are causing trouble.
NUMBER 1: The wav files will not snap to original record position. I keep getting an error message about "out of range" and of all craziness with a negative SMPTE number. ??? The prompt suggests an offset error. But there isn't I can find. Start time is set to 0:0:0.0.0 here and at the TV studio. They film at 29.97d. That matches as well. Sample Rate is correct at 48k 24bit. I've uncovered every thing I can think of. I did have to set the tempo down to 5 BPM in order to see a full 24 hours in SMPTE.
NUMBER 2: I can't figure out how to see the timestamp start time of the audio files in the audio window. I have every option turned on in the VIEW option, I can see length, but I see nothing about start time of original record time. Am I missing something simple here? Seems like a very standard option that should be easily accessible. It would allow me to prepare the location on the time line.
Overall, I'm hoping I can do all the above with my current rig but realize that the clock is ticking toward a whole new system with Logic 9.
Help please. Don't want to lose this client.

Sure do appreciate everyone's willingness to help. Setting SMPTE start to 24:00:00.0.0 didn't work either. I confirmed with the studio manager at the TV station also that they run a 24hour clock with 0 being midnight.
I'm really hoping that the error is on their end.
*It would help me if anyone knew how to VIEW the Timestamp info attached to the wav files. That would at least give me an approximate idea of where they should be.*
I'm supposed to be editing and mixing the voice dialog from numerous different scene takes that were shot throughout a day of filming. It's critical that I can see all these different takes that were captured over hours of open recording. Some of the files are almost 4 hours long. It's a big project and I'm sure hoping I can stay inside Logic to get it all done with excellence.

  • Help me! Audition always failing exports to wav, mov, and Premiere Pro! WHY???

    Hello,
I am sound editing and mixing a picture locked 25 min short film. When done with the mix and ready to  export the mixdown, the export always takes forever (the project is 12GB large total) I mixdown to stereo file wav, but when I open the file, both VLC and Media Player don't play, with WMP saying its corrupt. I bring the same file into Premiere, and it says that it cannot import "because of  a header problem"! What is that? I tried the same with the export to Quicktime (mov) format, and I got the same result. Go up to the window and choose Export to Premiere (you know, directly into Premeire) and it says it it will take 12 hours. I don't remeber cs5.5 taking this long. HELP PLEASE, I need to export this by tonight!!!
    Export settings(both formats):
    Convvert to 48 khz
Convert to 24 bt (32 with mov; only option)
tried both RF64 and Legacy Chunk whatever
Premeire Pro freindly setting on in Preferences
    Windows 7 64 Pro
    INtel Core i7 930
    16GB RAM
    GeForce GTS 250

I don't think a file of that length should exceed 4GB, but be aware that Audition CAN export wave files larger than that due to the RF64 support (vs. 'legacy chunk'), and Premiere can't yet open RF64 giga-wave-files!
Now, other than telling you that this shouldn't be happening, we'll need more information before we can track down what's wrong.  Best thing is to detail for us what your export settings are, precisely.

  • Does Adobe Audition 3 support Broadcast WAV files ?

Does Adobe Audition 3 support Broadcast WAV (BWAV) files ?

The ans is Audition (& Cool Edit before) has very impressive BWF capabilities.
But with some MASSIVE fundamental & fatal flaw problems
So good but sooooo missing some vital aspects,
Adobe are so close to having an app the Film/TV post community could use & love ( just like loads of people keep using "Photoshop" as the best 2D graphics app, no matter they maybe principally working in 3D; it is a crying shame the fact Adobe have bought this "gem" and don't it seems realize Audition is for sure the Photoshop for Audio. IMO nothing comes close, Audition is the ultimate Audio editor (and in no way bad, well pretty  good, as a multi-track).

  • Broadcast Wav Format

    Hi there,
A client of mine has asked me to supply some audio in .BWF format. The way I understand it, a broadcast wav is the same (ish!) as a 'normal' wav but with extra metadata, timestamping, etc.
I can't offhand think of an application that will allow me to convert my audio/audio exports from FCP to .BWF - or is there a plug-in for FCP/Soundtrack Pro/Pro Tools that I can download that will enable me to do this?
    Thanks!

I've looked into FCP, Soundtrack, Logic and the rival Adobe products . . .
it does look like you need an external audio recorder with firewire interface to record out to rather than there being an export function in any of the above.
Although there do seem to be a lot of widgets and tools out there that can interpret audio OMF and XML in different ways.
I guess if you can't lay your hands on a .BWF recorder the best suggestion might be to lay the audio off to Digibeta.

  • Broadcast WAV Metadata

    Hey everyone,
I know that .WAV files by themselves can't store metadata/tagging information (ie artist, genre, year, etc) in them, such as mp3 or FLAC... But I read that Broadcast Wave Files have been modified to allow this.
I've bounced a stereo pcm file out of Nuendo using the Broadcast WAV option (Which still gives the .wav extension, not a .bwf) on a PC. When I bring it to my MAC, I can still see the metadata when I 'get info' on it, but the data is still lost when I bring it into iTunes.
Does iTunes just not support this type of file (all waves, broadcast waves?), or is there another way to get this to work?
PS, I know using WAV files is a little prehistoric now-a-days, but this is just one of many formats I'm trying to get to work this way.
    Thanks for any help!

  • Wave Files and Album Art

Can you add album art to .wav files?

Can you add album art to .wav files?
From the point of view of iTunes the answer is no, you cannot add Album Art to WAV files.
In terms of adding meta tags to WAV files, one or two programs use RIFF chunks to store meta tags in WAV files, this is actually how Apple do it for AIFF files. However iTunes does not support this for WAV files, and Windows Media Player does not support reading the tags in AIFF files.
If you are looking for a lossless music format that can be shared between iTunes and Windows Media Player then I have been there, got the T-Shirt, etc.
A long time ago in a Galaxy far, far away... before I ripped all my CDs to iTunes, I considered what format to use that would be lossless and shareable amongst everything I was interested in.
That is, what is the one true lossless format (to rule them all, and in the darkness bind them...).
Initially I thought WAV, as it could be played by iTunes, iPod, and of course Windows Media Player, but I instantly discovered iTunes could not add artwork to WAV files. I then checked and confirmed Windows Media Player can as standard play AIFF files. However while it can play them, because it cannot read the meta tags in AIFF files, it will not let you add them to the Window Media Player library. At that time, I did not seriously think it would be possible to use Apple Lossless files in Windows Media Player, but I checked and I was right, it was not possible and it was believed at that time that it would never be possible since Apple Lossless is a proprietary format.
I did initially settle on using AAC instead (a lossey format) which can be played and used (with additional software) with Windows Media Player.
However I never give up and continued on my quest for the holy grail of one lossless format to rule them all.
FLAC and OGG can sort of be used in iTunes for Mac, but not on iPod, so they were ruled out. WMA lossless was instantly ruled out because while it might be possible to import in to iTunes (for Windows), it cannot be used in iTunes (meaning you would have two copies of each track), and it also cannot be used on the iPod.
I then used some lateral thinking, while there is no Apple Lossless solution for Windows Media Player, is there a solution that runs on Windows and maybe could be adapted to use with Windows Media Player? I found solutions for use with Foobar 2000, WinAmp, and dbPowerAmp, but none of these would work with Windows Media Player. I then found mention of the BASS software library (for programmers to use to write music programs) which is available for both Mac and Windows. See http://www.un4seen.com/ I also found that a module had been written for use with BASS to play Apple Lossless. However BASS by itself still would not work as a directshow filter for use with Windows Media Player. I then found mention of someone taking BASS, and an MP3 module, and packaging it as a directshow filter for use with WMP. Ah, hah! I thought, all we need is to do the same thing but with the Apple Lossless module. I was able to get in-touch with the programmer who had done that and persuade him to do the same thing with the Apple Lossless module which was written by MaresWEB and now available as open-source code here http://www.maresweb.de/projects/bass/alac.php
Jackpot, I can now play Apple Lossless in iTunes, iPod, Roku Soundbridge, Sonos ZonePlayer, SlimDevices Squeezebox, Apple TV, iPhone, Windows Media Player, Microsoft Media Center 2005, etc. etc. etc.
The one true lossless format is therefore the one you would least expect, it is Apple Lossless!
The Apple Lossless directshow filter which Milenko Mitrovic packaged together is available from his website http://www.dsp-worx.de see the January 8th 2007 entry.
You will also need a plugin for Windows Media Player to let it read MPEG4 meta tags, this plugin would also be used for AAC files as they use the same MPEG4 file format and tags. There are two available (both free) either this one http://wmptagext.sourceforge.net/ or this one http://www.softpointer.com/WMPTagSupport.htm
iTunes can of course add album artwork to Apple Lossless tracks (including as embedded art), it is possible (with various steps) to add Apple Lossless tracks to Windows Media Player, and have it play them and manage them in its library, and it is possible to use folder.jpg files with Windows Media Player for its copies of the artwork.

  • Preparing Music Video for Broadcast in Premiere and Encore?

I am trying to prepare a music video for broadcast in Premiere Pro. However, the specs require audio (Ch. 1-2 stereo, Ch. 3 mono Ch. 4 mono). I can't find a way to do this in Premiere Pro. I seem to be able to do this in Encore - I can create four audio tracks.
    Problems so far:
    1. I can only import the stereo wav file onto track 1, and have to import it again on track 2. The stereo mix isn't spread across both tracks Left/Right. Will the stereo mix appear on the correct tracks when delivered for broadcast?
    2. I need to export the video as an mpeg 2 on my hard drive - not actually burn to disc. Can I export an mpeg 2 video file without burning to disc?

I am delivering the master as an mpeg 2, uploaded by FTP.
    Here are the audio specs:
Stereo Left and Right audio signals must appear on channel 1 and 2 respectively
Dolby ProLogic matrixed audio (Lt /Rt) may be substituted for Stereo audio on channel 1 and 2 if desired
Monaural audio may be substituted for Stereo on channels 1 and 2, but must appear on both channels and must be in-phase.
Secondary Audio Program (SAP) if available, must appear on Channel 3, otherwise a mono mix of Channels 1 and 2 should appear on Channel 3.
Descriptive Video Service (DVS) audio, if available, must appear on Channel 3 if delivered in lieu of SAP audio
DVS must appear on Channel 4 if delivered in addition to SAP audio, otherwise a mono mix of channels 1 and 2 should appear on channel 4.
So basically, I need a Left and Right stereo on Ch. 1 and 2. And mono on 3 and 4, because I don't have SAP or DVS content.
I can create 4 audio tracks in Encore, then I import my stereo wav file and mono wav file. But when I drag the stereo wav file onto audio track 1, both channels of the stereo wav file are on track 1. I read in Encore's help files that (assuming this would be going to DVD and not an mpeg on my hard drive) only one audio track can play at a time. Each individual audio track appears to be stereo, but I don't know how they would each correspond with the requirement for Ch. 1 to be stereo left and Ch. 2 to be stereo right. As of right now, it appears that track 1 is both left and right, and I can import the same stereo wav file on track 2 seperately with both left and right audio.
The specs I'm trying to meet are Viacom/MTV which is a major outlet for music video content, so I'm assuming their requirements are reasonable enough.
As for making an MPEG2 from Encore without burning a disc, here is the format:
    Container: MXF OP1a (SMPTE 378M)
Resolution: 1920x1080i (interlaced) 16x9 aspect ratio
Encoding: MPEG2, High Profile@ High Level 4:2:2, 50Mbps Long GOP, CBR, 29.97 frames per second (59.94 fields per second)
Audio: Uncompressed 2-, 4-, 12- or 16-channel audio, 24bit @48khz, BWF (SMPTE 382M). All audio channels must be contained within 1 MXF track.
Not sure how to export from Encore - only options I am seeing involve burning to DVD or Blu-Ray.
I really appreciate your help thus far!

  • Tempo problems with imported wav files

Hey everyone, sorry if there's a quick fix for this in the forums that I couldn't find, but I've been having some tempo problems with imported .wav files.
Long story short, my system couldn't handle playing all the tracks for a song while recording drums, so I bounced out an mp3 of the song and put it in a new Logic file so my drummer could just play along to that as I recorded him. Unfortunately, the original song is at 167 bpm, but I forgot to change the bpm in the new Logic file with the .mp3 file of the song to 167 bpm, so it was left at the default 120 bpm.
So, the drums were recorded at the correct 167 bpm, but Logic thinks that those new drum .wav files should be played at 120 bpm, so when I import my drum tracks back into the original file, they do not play correctly at all.
I could get record it all again, but I wanted to check if there was a way I could salvage what I already have, since my drummer lives about an hour away right now and can't just come over whenever he wants.
Thanks for the help! I really appreciate it.

    Hi,
First, do not use MP3 in Logic, the sound quality is less than AIFF, WAV or CAF, and Logic has to decode it for playback, making it a heavier burden on the CPU than an uncoded audiofile, such as AIFF, WAV or CAF.
Secondly, audio files are independent of Logic's tempo. If you bounce down an audio file in any format (other than Apple Loop), it will play back at the same speed, +regardless of Logics' tempo setting+, either at recording or playback. Logic doesn't 'think' anything. The BPM is only important to MIDI tracks, or to the spacing between audio files. The audio files themselves *are not affected* by the tempo setting. If you import an audio file of tempo 167 into a 120 BPM project, the file will still play at 167, only Logic will indicate the wrong bar positions.
    regards, Erik.
