Xorg 7 broke amsn
hello,
I've been running Xorg 7 since a month also i always used amsn, it was great, but after the last update of Xorg 7, my amsn turned out to be broken
[wael@nasreddine ~]$ amsn
Application initialization failed: this isn't a Tk applicationinvalid color name "#f0f0f0 "
Xorg.conf -> http://pastebin.ca/42279
_Gandalf_ wrote:now following ur suggestion i don't have any file called ~/.Xresources so i am not sure the problem comes from this file...
Tonight a bug will be filled if no other suggestions, hope the devels will have better view of it...
I have .Xresources file but the problems still exist even if I rename .Xresources to .Xresources.bak
It is also surprising that
xrdb -merge .Xresources
gives errors
Predefined macro file
'/usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.0.3/include/mcpp_gcc40_predef_old.h' is not found
Predefined macro file
'/usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.0.3/include/mcpp_gcc40_predef_std.h' is not found
and before upgrading to xorg7 it was ok.

Xorg broke after kernel upgrade!
Hi,
Kernel upgrade was no problem nvidia is loaded 9631 .... but X refuses to start
I had to force kernel to install [bad thing!] now getting libc.so.6 error ?
back to 2.6.18 atm with no nvidia arrggggg!!!
TIACould you be a little bit more precise about the error message? Often such errors happen because there are old nvidia files from older versions hanging around (this happens if you used the nvidia installer in the past).

Upgrade 24July2012 locked system when starting xorg/openchrome
I am trying to salvage my laptop install. I had upgraded last week with the July 14, 2012 change in the symlink to /lib.
An upgrade today which included an update to xf86-video-unichrome and a new kernel went smoothly but on reboot syslinux gives the usual boot messages, including that Longhaul APIC does not work on my Via C7-D processor. I get to a terminal login prompt which previously briefly displays before starting xdm. When the login prompt disappears there is now no xdm just a blank display. I am unable to <ctl>-<alt>-<f3> to a terminal.
I can boot to run level 3 when I attempt login the ntp daemon echos the time offset and then I can log in. Startx also locks the system so I am guessing that xorg broke.
For now this is a heads up. I will try to update over the next few days
Edit: Added Info
I reviewed Xorg.0.log and did not see any gross errors. It looks like this has been a recent problem; from the bug tracker at OpenChrome:
#435 system freeze when X starts initialization 0.2.906 defect somebody new 10/06/12
Although that was the prior version. My presently installed version is xf86-video-openchrome-0.3.0-1.
I'll try to roll the update back and if that is the problem try to file a bug report.
Last edited by shep (2012-07-26 01:28:04)Roll Back to xf86-video-openchrome-0.2.906-1-i686 restores the system. A bug report (FS#30868) was filed and an email sent to the maintainer.

Siliconmotion video driver no longer working
Updating xorg broke the siliconmotion video driver - the new module no longer works with my hardware - an asus laptop. I have to use vesa at 16. In previous incarnations I was able to fall back or build direct from xorg but the previous versions no longer work either (after also updating my desktop which uses nv - I believe it is because of the new hotplugging because the old nv module would start but would lose all input functionality) (but I see you actually now support the nv module so I no longer have to build my own).
I have tried building from scratch but siliconmotion-1.6.0 does not function with my asus

On the issue of Lion, and the XLR8 devices?
Apple did change a number of items, that limited the XtraView's ability (this is the one, with the built-in audio on the older 2820 chipset). Audio, just won't work in 64-bit mode.
The easy workarounds are to boot into 32-bit mode (hit 3 and 2) on boot.
To check if you are in 64 bit mode, go to the System Profiler (Apple Menu > More Info > Software (left pane) and see if the 64 bit is loaded.
If in 32-bit mode you are still having an issue, please check that you are running XLR8 version 1.4.6. You can download new versions at http://XLR8.com.
You can email XLR8 for a free audio cable (Mac sound jack to RCA audio), or for $25, XLR8 can upgrade you to the new 2860 device that works in 64-bit mode.
Now, that hopefully, we have you working again... about Daystar. Actually XLR8 has always developed, built and shipped the devices. Daystar just had a bigger name and was an Apple Authorized Reseller. But, the Apple relationship ended, and Daystar closed.
XLR8, LLC will continue to support the devices and we will continue to provide great products and good support (sorry, we are a small company, and due to limited time... I can only provide "good" support. Maybe one day, it will be great.)
We are expanding the website at XLR8.com. You are always welcome to provide feedback and suggestions.
Oh, and lastly, thanks to Thiago, for sending me an email, and alerting me to the thread...
Gary,
XLR8

[SOLVED] Upgrade to XOrg 1.15 broke KWin and DRI_PRIME
I did another "pacman -Syu" this morning hoping for an uneventful update. However, after a reboot I found my KDE to be in a pretty much useless. Windows were black except for decorations (http://prifuk.cz/non_drupal/kwin_black.jpg) and DRI_PRIME=1 doesn't run 3D acceleration on my Radeon DIS anymore. At first I suspected a problem with mesa but the problem persisted even after a downgrade to 10.0.1 which worked fine for me. Another suspect on the list is X.Org but I cannot roll back to 1.14 because everything apparently depends on GLAMOR now and I do not have all necessary packages in pacman's cache anymore.
I switched KWin to use XRender instead of OpenGL which at least renders the screen correctly, OpenBox works fine too. I might be wrong about X.Org being the cause but I can't think of anything else. Does anybody have any idea how to debug this issue? I have an Intel HD3000 + Radeon 6400M, both were working fine before the last update.
http://prifuk.cz/non_drupal/Xorg.0.log
Last edited by MadCat_X (2014-01-15 21:15:46)I noticed this as well, though not using kwin. I got DRI_PRIME back by manually
xrandr --setprovideroffloadsink 0x55 0x7d
where the numbers are the given by
xrandr --listproviders
(xrandr is not installed by default with Xorg, package name xorg-xrandr).
Reference: Prime - ArchWiki
I have not yet delved deeper into why it's no longer set automatically.
EDIT: I probably jumped the gun, I have none of your problems, I just noticed DRI_PRIME=1 wasn't enough to use the radeon card. I probably had to:
xrandr --setprovideroffloadsink 0x55 0x7d
before as well.

Hello there. I'm using Archlinux with core+extra repos (xorg-server 1.6.3 and intel drivers 2.8.1). Today I've tried to update to xorg-server 1.7.1+xf86-video-intel 2.9.1 drivers.
After X restart I've got strange screen (Acer One 110 netbook), seems like it vertical divided and I can use only left half of it. But at bottom right corner I can see icons of gxneur and xchat (if running) on stalonetray. All other right half of display as "black hole" - can't see windows moved there and so on.
Keyboard and mouse also doesn't work. Updating xf86-input-keyboard/mouse from testing repo can't solve problem. Also I have "Option "AutoAddDevices" "disable"" in my xorg.conf. So..I've tried to back to previos versions of xorg-server and intel drivers.
Keyboard and mouse are works now, but screen is still vertical divided.. It looks like there is strange transparent "always on top" window at right half of screen, which hides all other windows under it, but couldn't be seen itself.
So.. what can I do to take back working X?AndyRTR wrote:When you want to use packages from testing repo you need to -Syu ALL packages. There are also new keyboard and evdev drivers and more. You should read around how to deal with upgrading Arch and how to use the testing repo. It's not recommended and expected to work when you only pick a few packages.
Ok. System upgraded from testing repo. Keyboard and mouse are works. But strange area on screen is still there. It's a strange framebuffer or smth same I think.
Here is screenshot: http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/306/ … 4x600s.png
Area with "OPENBOX" text is it. There are no "EE" in Xorg.0.log

[Solved] Update broke xorg?
Hey everyone,
So I updated my system yesterday. I rebooted my system and now when I xinit, xorg displays a black screen. I have no idea what could have caused this as I don't remember installing any update that would possibly break xorg so completely. I am running a Lenovo z580 with intel HD 4000 integrated graphics.
To be perfectly clear, I can boot into the initial shell perfectly (I don't know the name but it is the one that requires you to log in if you do not have a log in manager installed). I can do anything I want to in that shell, but if I xinit into Cinnamon, i3-twm, or Openbox, the screen goes black and I have to ctrl+alt+F2 to get back into the shell. I have found that xorg is running but it is only displaying a completely black screen for ever single desktop environment.
As this is in Newbie Corner, you can probably tell that I have no clue what I need to do to get this fixed. Please help.
Last edited by DaBungalow (2013-03-06 02:46:01)So far I have been using the .xinitrc file combined with xinit. I have xinit set up to take an argument (via the xinitrc file) and start either cinnamon (exec gnome-session-cinnamon), i3 (exec i3), or openbox (exec openbox). I think at one point I set up the xorg.conf file so that I could run Steam. The only change I made though was to use SNA instead of UXA(?). Other than that, I haven't really touched xorg's conf files (maybe I blacklisted one of the modules that the wiki said could cause issues with intel drivers???).
Thanks for the help! -
[Solved] Xorg 1.5 screwed up my NVIDIA
Hi,
Today I did a pacman -Syu and I got the newest NVIDIA driver installed and the newest Xorg. Everything broke. Well not exactly everything. But my settings are all screwed up. For a start my screen refuses to load at the normal resolution (1680x1050). I got a default 1024x860 (or whatever it is). Also my colour depth is 16. And regardless of any changes I make in NVIDIA settings manager the changes never stick. Also my compiz-fusion is totally screwed up. When it starts up my screen goes completely white. I have to blindly alt+F2 and run kwin to be able to do anything.
Also my fonts are really small.

hmmm, I have exactly the same problem and I also use the nvidia-96xx.
I noticed that I only get the scrambled text for the lines beyond 20 lines...so if I rescale the height of my window to 20 lines I never get scrambled text and and when I change the height of the window larger then 20 lines, only the 20+ lines get scrambled.

Hey all, recently, after restarting post-upgrade, X loads my DE (Gnome), but fails to display it correctly. There are also quite a few visual artifacts. I've been running Arch on it for months, and I saw nothing in the update that would have broken anything. And the only errors/warnings in my Xorg logs are regarding vesa, fbdev, a fonts directory and ACPI (See code below).
$ grep EE Xorg.1.log

A thumbnail of a screenshot is below. Should anyone require a higher resolution of the image, I will provide one on request. For the record, the mouse and some of the icons on the shell appear. The whole screen also flickers as if broken on mouse move.

Connor, thank you for your reply. EXA is a no-go. If by RenderAccel, you mean AccelDFS, it's also a no-go (if not, I don't know what you're referring to). I am also not familiar with the Composite extension. As far as I'm aware neither the driver or the xorg server were in the update which preceded the issue.
As a final update, I managed to get GNOME into Fallback mode to see if that would help at all. Though it does display my background, which doesn't happen in standard mode anymore, the icons and shell are all still messed up. As I need my laptop to be in fairly functioning condition before Wednesday—and because I'm fairly sure this whole thing was due to a mistake I made somewhere along the way—I'm just going to do a clean install tonight.
Thanks for all the help as always folks. Have a good night!

The card is an Intel 2500 and the drivers are installed, as you can see. As far as I can tell it's an update that broke this as I haven't configured anything for X myself (no specific xorg config files, only the default ones in xorg.conf.d, none of which relate to the display).

i did a clean FTP install of arch x86_64 and i configured my wlan0 wireless card (its a TP-Link tl wn321g usb wifi card), when i did a pacman -Syu today, the connection got stablished but i could't browse or open any internet site, like there was no connection, the latest Syu updates the kernel i think 2.6.27.7 and the nvidia drivers, now the connection is giving me this error when i do a sudo /etc/rc.d/network restart
SIOCDELRT: No such process
and so my dwm session is working weird:
- some keybindings are not working
- the urxvt's are not maximized and exists in all tags
seems that the latest update broke them, am I the only one with this kind of problem, after these updates?
Edit: I see the other posts about the new xorg... so i think i must wait until this gets solved, but my real concern it's about my wireless connection, downgrading the kernel package did no effect
Last edited by leo2501 (2008-12-01 01:44:19)it use the rt2500usb rt2x00 rt73usb and i try to do everything manually with the same results, i added wlan to rc.conf and all to connect automatically at boot, so it connects but i dont have connection, i mean with a iwconfig i see that the essid is correct and connected, but i can't access any internet

[SOLVED]Xorg crash with some applications when using double screen
Hi,
I have a TV that I often use to watch dvd from my computer, and to do that I've set it up as a second screen in my xorg.conf, but on a daily basis I use a xorg.conf file with only my main screen. Up until last week I was able to use my second screen without problem, but yesterday I tried and it crashed instantly.
So I ran a few tests, amsn and vlc seems to be 2 applications that makes X crash (though there might be other, but I seem to be able to use chromium firefox and ktorrent just fine).
My WM is not to blame, I've launched X without any WM and vlc still makes X crash.
The problem does not happen when using a single screen.
I thought that my xorg.conf might be the problem, so I used nvidia-settings to create a new one, but that didn't change anything.
Here are my xorg.conf used for dual screen, and the logfile from the Xorg crash:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder62) Wed May 27 01:58:49 PDT 2009

Last edited by Azriel (2010-10-06 15:09:27)Sorry this doesn't really help with the Xinerama problem, but since you are using the nvidia driver, have you considered using Twinview instead? You could do composite stuff too with Twinview - last I knew, Xinerama had problems with things that want to use compositing. I don't know how your setup is but if you're not set on using Xinerama, it might be an option to consider.

Hi everybody.
Last update I did was when xorg 1.7.x (where x is between 1 and 3, dont remember), and it broke my xorg, I had some glitches with graphics, and x randomly crashed.
Now xorg 1.7.3, kernel 2.6.32.5 and nvidia 190.53 is here for pretty long time and as arch suer I feel committed to update
So i read the forum here a bit, and havent found any particular issues that broke the system, but I want to be safe.
I got nvidia geforce 6600 agp if it does matter.
So is there any particular issues that can arise after updating?
Thanks a lot!Similar problem here, after updating xorg and nvidia driver the system freezes with nvidia logo on display and caps lock and scroll lock leds blinking.
I got nvidia geforce 7300.
Any solution to this besides downgrading? -
Xorg.conf somethings I don't understand yet
Background:
I'm pretty much a total noob when it comes to linux. I've been a dos/windows user/tech for more then 15 years and I've finally decided I wanted to learn linux.
So I setup a teamspeak server(Linux Talk) on my windows machine and have been using a kvm to learn linux on another. Pudge has been a great help coming on the teamspeak server and chatting with me and others.
Today:
So today I decided to try reinstalling Arch without any help. And So far I've done fairly well I managed to get it updated and get into gnome. However I've run into some things in the xorg.conf that while I was able to get around, i really didn't understand them. I tried search the forum and wiki, but it didn't help.
What I did:
I used xorg -configure and it generated the xorg.conf.new file and properly detected my monitor, I copied and renamed it as it should be, but it didn't work. I would recieve out of range. So I commented out the refresh lines (like it said to do) so that it would use ddc, that didn't work either agian I recieved the out of range message on my monitor again. So I put in manual refresh rates that I knew would work and they did.
The part where I got confused:
What I don't understand is when it properly detected and identified the monitor, how come that didn't work ? And how come using the ddc method didn't work.
I know i'm not filling in all the blanks with specific numbers and hardware details, I'm not looking for a how to for my specific setup, just trying to understand the basic process and why it didn't work even though it detected everything properly.Anymore you might be able to get away with not specifying sync ranges for your monitor... it seems I broke my site, so I will post a link to my xorg.conf url soon.

I think I made a boo boo, I updated xorg and some others...
And they broke KDE...in some sort of strange and bizarre way, KDE still works. Yet...I have no applications, I cannot open a single KDE specific application, such as the KMenu, or the Control Center.
I should've stayed with the original version, I basically bypassed the dependency warning, and then...I have no KMenu.
This might not help, but I also installed Epiphany and Wget, actually upgraded.
Just so you know, I can't even GET IN Menu Editor, and there isn't a single problem in the KMenu, might I reiterate.
Good news is, I can still use the terminal, which I have conviently located near the Window Pager.Hi Blizzard Wolf.
The simplest near-term solution is to replace xorg by xfree86 and wait for a reliable update of xorg.
Do the following:
1. Go to a console (Ctrl-Alt-F1, for example).
2. Log in as root.
3. Shut down X11 by typing: init 3
4. Replace xorg by xfree86: pacman -S xfree86
5. Create the configuration file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 (I like to use 'hwd' for this, which creates /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.hwd which you can copy or rename; you can install hwd using pacman).
6. Restart the X server: init 5
7. Log into KDE and perform any needed configuration clean up.

Win
