Xorg.conf , nvidia 96xx and dual head failure

i cant get Xorg to work with nvidia driver at all.
here is where i am.
setup aurch linux [X]
setup xserver with NV driver 1 head[X]
setup dual head[]
ok so i cant even get nvidia drivers to work or dual head on the NV driver.
i dont have an xorg.conf setup but i have tried the xorg.conf from my fedora setup but it just black screened.

Ive tried everything i could think of or what arch wiki could. I came to aurch linux to learn more about linux (fedora holds your hand to much.) but i dont think i can figure this one out on my own.

let me see if I understand your situation.
You are using the nvidia drivers and want to setup a dual screen with independent screens (?).
Without a xorg.conf one screen should work out of the box with one screen.
For the proprietary drivers you will need a minimal xorg.conf:

    I have installed Bumblebee and the Nvidia drivers on my Asus N53SV laptop. I am able to run programs such as glxspheres using Optirun. However, I am not sure what to do next if I want to render my desktop using my discrete video card (GT540M) instead of through ordinary Intel graphics.
    Should I copy the file /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nvidia to /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

    I don't see why you would do that. The point of bumblebee is to avoid using the nvidia card unless you start the program with 'optirun'. If you want to render your desktop and use the nvidia card all the time, just don't use bumblebee and directly use the nvidia driver.
    If you really really want to use bumblebee, I guess you could set your login manager to use a xinitrc method, and put optirun in front of the command that launch your desktop.

    PS: I deleted /var/log/Xorg.0.log file, but after reboot it is not recreated. Why? And remember that it said something like:

    Please don't use xorg.conf, edit the files inside /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ instead.
    I also have an ION board and have working HDMI connection with audio at 1920x1080 using the below configuration. Remove your xorg.conf and then edit these files:

    Please note that the above Modeline works on my TV (a 22'' low cost brand one) but I cannot guarantee it will work on yours.
    Try that first, then if it doesn't work, try to generate one using the cvt command, and replace the Modeline:
    cvt 1920 1080
    it should output something like this:

  • Xorg 6.8 and dual head setup

    Hello,
    I have a laptop with an ATI 9600 mobile chip which ran in xinerama mode fine for the previous release of xrog or xfrree86 but with the new xorg reslease 6.8 I can no longer run 2 monitors. It will run fine in single head mode, but it will no longer run in dual mode. In fact, it "seems" to run faster and take less memory in single head mode,

    Hello,
    I have a laptop with an ATI 9600 mobile chip which ran in xinerama mode fine for the previous release of xrog or xfrree86 but with the new xorg reslease 6.8 I can no longer run 2 monitors. It will run fine in single head mode, but it will no longer run in dual mode. In fact, it "seems" to run faster and take less memory in single head mode,

  • Kdemod 4.2 and dual head

    I am trying to setup dual monitor in kde 4.2. I ran the command
    xrandr --output DVI-0 --right-of VGA-0
    but it doesn't work, I get an error msg
    Xlib: extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
    . Doesn't kde 4 support dual head?

    what videocard are you using?
    I have kde4.2 running smoothly on my nvidia-card with twinview
    It's not yet perfect but it runs fine, there are still some problems if you want to use panels on both screens.
    Also watch out with gtk-qt, here there are problems with gvim, openoffice, ... if you use it select the gtk style kde4-oxygen, then everything works fine

    I have 1680x1050 and 1280x1024 monitors which I would like to setup so that I have two displays (:0.0 and :0.1), i.e. can't drag a window to the other display, but can move the mouse from one screen to the next. The graphics card is Radeon HD 4850.
    At the moment I have one screen only, so I can't move the mouse from the first to the second screen, it is captive in the first screen.

    It doesn't look as if xrandr can help as it reports a maximum virtual desktop of 1680x1680.
    Because the two monitors are different resolutions I don't know if a single screen is the answer.
    I used to have two displays/screens configured to two different resolutions matching the monitors using the catalyst driver but can't get it working using the xf86-video-ati driver.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • [S] Latest Xorg crashes on dual head system when web browser is opened

    Due to the long Subject line I abbreviated, the issue is solved but I would still like it if someone could answer my question if someone knows why
    After updating Xorg and the Radeon drivers on my dual head system opening any kind of web browser causes Xorg to crash.  Any other application: Dolphin, Kopete, Amarok, urxvt open and run just fine with no issues from Xorg (which is baffling me).  I have a bunch of single head systems that use ATI video cards that don't have this issue, like the one I am currently on that has Chrome open with four tabs.
    I caused a couple of these crashes and grabbed /var/log/Xorg.0.log, can be viewed from here http://sprunge.us/bNZC, as well as grabbed my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf file, which is here http://sprunge.us/gbNW.  SLiMs log file has a little bit more in it as far as errors go, http://sprunge.us/UjVK, mostly how it is trying to load VDPAU which if I remember correctly that is a Nvidia thing is it not?  There are also errors how it can't load the RANDR extension.  Anyone have any helpful pointers of solving this?

    It seams that my 10-monitor.conf file was causing the issue, why I am not sure... and it would be nice to know what the problem with it was, but after moving that file out of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d directory and restarting X11 and using xrandr to get my screens setup the way I like them to be X11 no longer crashes when a web browser is opened.  I wonder if this will also solve my issue of Awesome randomly crashing after long periods of inactivity...

  • 5-screen (multi-monitor) nVidia xorg.conf -- my setup

    Hi. I would like to share my xorg.conf, since it took forever to get right.
    There isn't a lot of information out there for folks using > 2 monitors, or several graphics cards, or esoteric setups including rotation etc. I hope this will be useful; I wouldn't mind contributing to the wiki if anybody thinks it might be useful.
    So first up: hardware. I have
    nVidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti connected to a 24" monitor (in the middle)
    nVidia GeForce 210 connected to two 19" monitors, rotated into portrait (on either side of the 24")
    nVidia GeForce GT 440 connected to two 15" monitors (above the 24")
    here is a picture of the monitors, click for a bigger version
    Drivers: I'm using the official nVidia drivers, I couldn't get nouveau to work. Since I am using Xinerama, the XRandR extension isn't loaded -- therefore my setup won't be suitable for people whose screen configuration changes dynamically. But I'd prefer not to use Xinerama, and even to use nouveau if possible; if anybody has a similar configuration working with nouveau, please share
    Finally, the actual config itself. Here it is on pastebin.
    Rotation
    The correct way to rotate monitors in xorg.conf is through the metamodes option of the Screen section. On my Screen 2 and 4 (the two 19" monitors), you can see that

    has been added at the end of the metamodes option. Contrary to some other guides floating around, it is not necessary to specify these options:

    I believe these come from an earlier version of Xorg. They don't have any effect when I put them in my xorg.conf, using Xorg 1.12.4 and nVidia 304.43.
    Even when I specified rotate in metamodes, my monitors didn't appear to rotate because I had originally written
    Option "metamodes" "CRT-1: nvidia-auto-select +0+0 { Rotation = left} "
    instead of
    Option "metamodes" "DFP-1: nvidia-auto-select +0+0 { Rotation = left} "
    This just made rotation fail silently, with no error message. Make sure to specify DFP if you're using a digital output (DVI, HDMI, DP) and CRT only if you're using a VGA output on your graphics board.
    Tips
    When you're testing out a new Xorg.conf, you can use
    startx -- :1
    to start a new X server without killing the current one. See if your configuration works, then switch back to your original X server by pressing Cmd-Alt-F7.
    You should also keep a log of different configurations you have tried. You can use a version control system like git to track changes to your Xorg.conf; make sure you document every change you have made, and why, it can prove invaluable later on.
    Feel free to ask about this setup. I would like to know something: what is the function of the Screen option in the Device section? On the four Device entries for my nVidia 210 and 440 cards, there is an option called Screen; when I take it out, the setup breaks. Why are they there? And why do they not map to the screen numbers in the Screen section? (They are numbered 0, 0, 1, 1 rather than 1, 2, 3, 4)

    The red arrows show the pointer progression through the monitors (moving mouse left to right). When the cursor is on the top monitor, it becomes an X, and the screen is black.

    This what appears with the new xorg.conf:
    "leftAcer" and "rightAcer" appear, but nothing appears on "topAcer" (it appears not to be getting a signal from the gpu). I can move the mouse pointer between "leftAcer" and "rightAcer".
    Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Here are a few details about the hardware setup:
    GeForce 9600 GT is in the PCI:1 slot. It's DVI out is going to "acerLeft", it's VGA out is going to "acerRight".
    GeForce GT 610 is in PCI:2 slot. It's VGA out is going to "acerTop".

  • Xrandr not listing dual head outputs

    I'm running into a little annoying problem with xrandr. It doesn't want to list my nvidia 8800gt's dual heads as different outputs.

    So it only lists "default" even though I have a second monitor plugged in over DVI (a TV actually). I know it's not a problem with output to the TV because if I specifically set up output in xorg.conf it works fine. However I would much prefer to enable and disable output to TV on an as-needed basis.

    I can duplicate LVDS onto VGA-0 but again video will not play on VGA-0.

  • Xorg.conf multiple monitors different refresh rates

    I have two monitors on my setup, with my primary montor being to the right of my secondary. They both have resolution 1920x1080. I'm trying to get my primary monitor to run at 120 Hz but it's only doing 60. My secondary monitor is a different model that can only do 60 Hz.

  • Acer V5 753g (Intel Haswell / Nvidia GT 750m dual GPU) Bumblebee

    I think I am fighting several issues here, altough I might have fixed one already. Up to this point I managed to disable the nvidia gpu, using the proprietary driver and bbswitch, but bumblebee is not working.
    Okay first, I could isolated an issue with acpi, by following instructions in this bug report https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/Bu … issues/460. To be exact it made me install a kernel module, code and install instrutions are described here: https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/bb … ack-lenovo (After the bug report the author of this code was generous enough to add my model to the source code, so midifications weren't neccesary any more).
    Now after a reboot the gpu is disabled, but as soon as I run optirun (which fails) I am not able to disable it again
    I know the exact same issue is discribed in the bumblebee arch wiki page, but none of the workarounds fit my situation.

    Your issue seems to be similar to what I had to face with the Razer Blade 14" (similar hardware as well).
    Goto: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=173356 and see the instructions to get graphics to work, see if it applies (summarized: run linux-ck and set rcutree.rcu_idle_gp_delay=2 in the kernel parameters).
    I haven't tried undoing this in more recent updates because I haven't had the time to mess with it---it is possible that it has been fixed, although the thread following my and possibly your issue at nvidia doesn't give any indication of that:

  • [SOLVED]Updated to Xorg 1.6.1 and the problems started...

    Hi all, I upgraded whole system and xorg 1.6.1 got installed...now it wont let me configure it!!! which is so lame
    I mean I am not sure if everything changed in the way we used to configure X - by modifying /etc/X11/xorg.conf
    but now there is no such file! my ctrl+alt+bkspace wont work, I cant switch between virtual consoles...:o
    The 'xorgconfig' command does not work for me anymore...I tried searching forums and done googling..but got no solutions so far
    Any help guyz...or a pointer atleast...really bummed out for the fact that I cant switch consoles and that xorg.conf file gone missing..

    I did everything right from modifying xorg.conf(the dontzap and dontvt switch thing) to modifying the /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/10-keymap.fdi file and adding code to .xinitrc file...but its just that I suspect my keyboard is not being detected properly! but its not just in X....I disabled X(from inittab) and did a console login, but the same thing-It wont switch terminals!   I checked almost all the keystrokes and found them to be perfect except the alt key, the alt key works sometimes and it doesnt most of the times, like for eg. I checked in firefox by doing alt+left arrow(go back one page) which does not work! BUT alt+home key works in 2nd go(always!) ...rest ALL the keys work fine, including the Fn keys.....I also did a test in KCalc, I tried to change the shortcut key, so when it asked me for the replacement key I pressed alt(both) and It would not take it! I pressed ctrl key and it recognized it immediately! and I checked all the keys to be working fine there.....What can I do here for the alt keys?
    My keyboard is of US layout and it has 111 keys, it has the 2 win-logo keys and a ms-menu key in addition to the normal keys.
    Cant believe the problem is with the keyboard ALT keys----( And I checked that the alt key works fine with kubuntu)
    Does the ALT key work at the console, and can you switch virtual consoles outside of X?
    If not, do you have your KEYMAP set up correctly in /etc/rc.conf? (think for you should be KEYMAP="us")

  • Xorg.conf somethings I don't understand yet

    Background:
    I'm pretty much a total noob when it comes to linux. I've been a dos/windows user/tech for more then 15 years and I've finally decided I wanted to learn linux.
    So I setup a teamspeak server(Linux Talk) on my windows machine and have been using a kvm to learn linux on another. Pudge has been a great help  coming on the teamspeak server and chatting with me and others.
    Today:
    So today I decided to try reinstalling Arch without any help. And So far I've done fairly well I managed to get it updated and get into gnome. However I've run into some things in the xorg.conf that while I was able to get around, i really didn't understand them. I tried search the forum and wiki, but it didn't help.
    What I did:
    I used xorg -configure and it generated the xorg.conf.new file and properly detected my monitor, I copied and renamed it as it should be, but it didn't work. I would recieve out of range. So I commented out the refresh lines (like it said to do) so that it would use ddc, that didn't work either agian I recieved the out of range message on my monitor again. So I put in manual refresh rates that I knew would work and they did.
    The part where I got confused:
    What I don't understand is when it properly detected and identified the monitor, how come that didn't work ? And how come using the ddc method didn't work.
    I know i'm not filling in all the blanks with specific numbers and hardware details, I'm not looking for a how to for my specific setup, just trying to understand the basic process and why it didn't work even though it detected everything properly.

    Anymore you might be able to get away with not specifying sync ranges for your monitor... it seems I broke my site, so I will post a link to my xorg.conf url soon.

    I configure a default xorg.conf and put it in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I generated it with Xorg -configure. No when i start the server i get the error: Failed to initialize GEM. Falling back to classic.

    Just removed /etc/X11/xorg.conf, logged off and then logged in again, tried to start the xserver but still nothing. When is start Xorg nothing happens, only a blank screen so i have to turn off my laptop with the power button. When i startx witch "startx" i get 2 xterm windows and that's, so i must restart my laptop again with the power button.

  • Autogen'ning an xorg.conf file?

    If you start X without a config, it configures itself automatically.  Is there a way I can snag the settings it decided to use and make a config (that I can tweak a bit?)

    The two have to be the same: can you paste the relevant sections of the generated xorg.conf (Section "Device" and Section "Screen")
    All you really need as far as device goes is:
    Identifier "Name"
    Driver "nv"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0" # most likely, but who knows
    Also you might want to check in some logs /var/log/X.0.log or similar to see which drivers are being loaded in the noconfig state (then specify that driver).
    And lastly, you gotta be sure that you are actually running with those respective xorg.confs.
    Or, you could just change the wrong stuff wrongly detected without an /etc/X11/xorg.conf at runtime via xrandr, xset, or xsetkbmap (or as an argument to xinit or startx (check some manpages for that)
