Xorg.conf question

I am kind of embarassed to ask this question, but I have to. Where do I find xorg.conf? Do I even have such a file? It is not in /etc/X11.
When I installed Xorg, I also installed hal and then added it to module list in rc.conf. Does hal just detect my xorg settings everytime I run X, thus eliminating the need for xorg.conf?

The only solution was to boot from a live distro and edit the xorg.conf from there. I think the problem was the missing hal daemon - im not sure.
There's a much easier way - boot into single user mode (either add "single" or "init=3" to the kernel line in grub) and edit your xorg.conf using nano or any other text editor.
Now, hal is *required*  as long as you don't have Option "AutoAddDevices" "False" in your xorg.conf. If you try to start X without having hal running, you will not be able to use your mouse/keyboard (again, if this happens, boot into single user mode and edit your xorg.conf). If you disable hotplugging (AutoAddDevices false), hal is optional (correct me if i'm wrong), but many features of KDE/Gnome depend on hal and won't work without it.
Personally, I'd recommend going with hotplugging and hal. First, try starting X without an xorg.conf. If everything looks good, you're done (on my notebooks I don't have xorg.conf). You might need xorg.conf to set stuff like your screen resolution - generate it (if you have an nvidia gfx card, use nvidia-xconfig), but make sure there are no lines concerning your mouse/keyboard in xorg.conf.
And, like paulez posted, you will need xf86-input-evdev.

  • Question re xorg.conf

    Hi,
I was away for a few days and this morning did a pacman -Suy.  One of the things loaded was xorg7.  I had some trouble with nvidia and finally got it runing.  Unfortunately it's running on my old xorg.conf. If I try the new one, the colors on my wallpaper are all washed out and my fonts etc are weird. I have read and re-read teh Wiki but don't follow. Was the wiki written while xorg7 was still in testing?  It seems like soem of the stuff it talks about are already done.  Should I continue running on the old xorg.conf and if not, what should I do to get the new one working??
    Thanks
    Jim

Here's my xorg.conf (the new one).

  • Xf86-video-intel 2.10 may required xorg.conf changes?

Upon upgrading to xf86-video-intel 2.10.0-1, my dual monitor xorg.conf setup was no longer working (both monitors displayed the same low-resolution content).  The fix involved the following search/replace operations in xorg.conf:
    - replace "monitor-LVDS" with "monitor-LVDS1"
    - replace "monitor-TMDS-1" with "monitor-DVI1"
    - replace "monitor-VGA" with "monitor-VGA1"
    A couple of questions:
    - Was the xf-video-intel upgrade responsible for the problem I encountered?
    - If so, is this documented anywhere?  (It doesn't seem to be in the 2.10.0 release notes).

no, you were using UMS, which defined display ports that way.
the KMS method in use now names your ports LVDS1, DVI1 and VGA1. the reason this happened with the 2.10 drivers is that they now require KMS to work, you were forced to switch.

  • [SOLVED]xpra + winswitch - best practice due to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/*

    Running xpra causes some headaches.
The application builds fine and installs just perfectly, the troubles comes from the default Xorg configuration is no longer stored in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, it's now stored and read from numerous files under /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ where just so happen to be my 5-nvidia.conf.

tl;dr: 5-nvidia.conf is trying to get loaded after xf86-video-dummy is loaded (which is the default for xpra).
Now to the question: What's the best practice because there's no information about this issue, and i can't be the only one who's run in to this since the xorg.conf was removed. At the moment I move all my nvidia configs out of the way, start xpra and move them back in. This works for the better part as long as i execute xpra with my own scripts.
But is there a better way (which doesn't perhaps include recreating xorg.conf since that appears to be something you should walk away from)?

Good thinking! (xpra is basically just screen but for x, or a X11 tunnel via SSH).
After a really quick poking around and remembering that xpra really just uses xorg-server-xvfb and at the very bottom of /etc/xpra/xpra.conf there's a line that says:
    xvfb=xpra_Xdummy -dpi 96 -noreset -nolisten tcp +extension GLX +extension RANDR +extension RENDER -logfile ${HOME}/.xpra/Xorg.${DISPLAY}.log -config /etc/xpra/xorg.conf
Appending -configdir appears to be working.
    Here are the full steps:
    [torxed@archie ~]$ sudo cp -r /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d /etc/xpra/
    [torxed@archie ~]$ sudo rm /etc/xpra/xorg.conf.d/*nvidia*
    [torxed@archie ~]$ sudo sed -i '$s/$/ -configdir \/etc\/xpra\/xpra.conf.d/' /etc/xpra/xpra.conf
*nvidia* would have to match your graphic-driver-config that would cause xorg-server-xvbf to crash.
I'll update the wiki and put a mention on the package about it because this either has to be standard or well known from the start because it really just breaks the package all together.

  • [SOLVED] Conditional xorg.conf, is possible?

I'd like to export an nfs archlinux installation to a couple of machines that boots via PXE.
Those machines have different graphic chips, and one of them needs some tweaks to the xorg.conf (s3) to play well.
What i done was to create and populate /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-openchrome.conf with specific device options.
but having specified the driver to use in that file, now the other machines (with a mix of intel, nvidia and radeon) wont start Xorg anymore.
What i am asking is if there is a "legacy" way to perform the task of assigning different xorg.conf configuration depending on the gpu used or if i need to hack my installation to switch xorg.conf at boot time depending on the installed gpu.
    Thanks for reading.

No problem - I immediately remembered the same question coming up recently, but even being an active contributor to the thread it took me a little while to track it down.  Be sure to see the revisions of the idea throughout that thread as different caveats were worked out.

  • Xorg.conf.d not loading when thinkpad docked

When installing arch on my workstation, a lenovo thinkpad t530, it all worked basically fine, just some issues with setting boot partitions and such. The problem I have that I haven't been able to solve is that if I start X while the laptop is docked, to a series 3 dock with an extra monitor and some peripherals connected, none of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d files seems to be loaded. This mostly shows by both the screens showing a cloned desktop with 1024x768 (or similar low resolution) and my keyboard configuration isn't loaded. All this works perfectly fine when starting X when the laptop isn't docked and I can't find anything strange about it in the log.
I currently, partly, solve this by calling xrandr and setxkbmap with the correct arguments in ~/.xinit but I really don't like that solution.
So my question is: Is there any known issues that could cause this or where should I start looking for the cause?
I'm not using any desktop environment, display manager or similar, just starting dwm from ~/.xinit when running xinit
For stackexchange reputation it's possible to answer the question at unix.stackexchange too:

jbritton wrote:Ok, so I reinstalled everything, and followed the new instruction in the Beginners Guide to install # pacman -S xorg-twm xorg-xclock xterm
Did you start at that part of the guide, or all the way back to the part that says:
    Wiki wrote:
    Install the base packages:
    # pacman -S xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-utils xorg-server-utils
The instructions for xorg-twm xorg-xclock and xterm were to give a really basic gui for testing X, but wouldn't pull in xorg-server which is what should give you xorg.conf.d and also pulls in the evdev driver as a dependency.
I noticed that hal was installed as apart of this. Anyone have another suggestion?  I checked in /etc/X11 and the xorg.conf.d folder is still missing.
That part seems odd, could you be using an out of date mirror? The current version of the xorg-server package is 1.9.4.901-1

  • Xorg.conf file after install? Where?

I know this is probably the worst question to ask but I couldn't find anything in the search for it.  I just installed Arch (using a .7 CD) with an FTP install and naturally it chose the xorg7 version.  His XServer starts alright but I noticed we both can't seem to find the xorg.conf file... usually it's in the /etc/X11/ folder (I think that's where it is on mine at home.)
The mouse, screen and almost everything works but for the life of me I can't find this configuration file.  Does it use defaults if one doesn't exist or perhaps it's somewhere I'm not looking?  Any advice would be appreciated as it isn't using the nvidia glx drivers but the basic nv.
    Thanks in advance.
(Forgot to mention I'm used to using the X.org 6 version on my home PC and just trying to figure this out before I upgrade to 7.)

mac57 wrote:Alternately, you can just copy an old xorg.conf from another distro you have been using, place it in /etc/X11/xorg.conf and edit appropriately. This is what I did, and it worked like a champ.
You'll want to be carefull about that with xorg7. The path locations will change then. It may be better to generate a new one and copy in the difference in options.

how come that if i uncomment the Modules section, even without loading any of them, X stops starting on startup and produces the error: x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
    thanks!

well.. i passed to KMS following the wiki.
everything's ok if i rename the radeon file in etc/X11/xorg.d/, otherwise i cant get hardware acceleration and X uses the cpu (i know because everything involving graphics becomes awfully slow).
so the question is: do i need to configure the vga anymore?? i use 2d applications only.
    one more thing: power saving.
i tried enabling dynamic power saving as described in the wiki, which states that you don't have to add " radeon.dynpm=1" to the kernel parameters if use a kernel release >= 2.6.35.
a few lines later, though, it says to run this command (i find it quite unclear):
    echo dynpm > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method
i tried, but i don't have that file! instead i've got a folder called "power" with some other stuff in it.
what should i do? please help

  • Copying xorg.conf from another distro

This may or may not be a silly question, but it's an honest one.
On my desktop, I just installed Arch Linux, and already have Debian on another partition.  Would it be safe to copy my xorg.conf from Debian, or would this cause issues on Arch?
I tried searching the net, but wasn't quite sure what to search for, so I ended up getting junk for search results.
Thanks in advance for any help given!

If both Xorg versions are identical, then the xorg.conf will work flawlessly, once all proper drivers and packages are installed..

  • Compositing and no xorg.conf

    Two questions:
    1) How do I check if compositing is enabled?
    2) Is there a way to turn on compositing without using xorg.conf?
    Thanks.

    Composite
Last edited by fsckd (2009-11-11 16:19:48)

Compositing is enabled by default in xorg-server >= 1.5 for most (all?) drivers.  Check /var/log/Xorg.0.log or run xdpyinfo to make sure it's enabled.

  • Auto created xorg.conf

I have noticed that when xorg automatically creates xorg.conf settings It works better than when I use my own xorg.conf.. I also get a lot fewer Warnings in xorg.log.
The question is, where is the autoconfigured xorg.conf?? I would really like to take a look at it, and apply it to my xorg.conf...

I also get this problem with my xorg.conf, but not with xorgs auto:
    [12:19 root ~]# glxinfo

libGL warning: 3D driver claims to not support visual 0x67

    Also this problem:
the pager in kdemod, I have it set to show the wallpapers, but with my xorg.conf The first desktop in the pager shows nothing, but other 3 desktops shows the wallpaper background..

  • Where xorg.conf go???

Ive just installed arch in my new system, im flying through terminals, firefox tabs, etc...
    But i have one question>
    Where did xorg.conf go???
I cant find it, i even did a updatedb and locate xorg.conf and didnt find anything.
For what i can see in console (ALT+CTRL+F1) its loading something called "getconfig.pl", so i guess is a perl script in charge of autodetecting settings (as it launched my X with the correct drivers --nv-- and the correct resolution/refresh) although i like the autodetect funtionality, i would like to make my wheel mouse work (only thing the detect missed).

Actually, i always did it manually, but if i have the chance on saving some minutes, using an app that does the work right (except for a few details, as the mouse wheel) i will give it a try. I like the idea of not having to enter every resolution mode i want...
The thing was, i didnt find the "default" file, and forgot about xorgconf actually, until now
    Thanks all for the replies!.

  • [SOLVED] xorg.conf with 'hwd -xa' on sony viao not working

    Hello,
    I have a Sony viao VGN-T150P running Arch linux and I can't get my x.org working .
here are some of information I get:
    lspci says

    so then I installed xf86-video-intel,
using that driver with a blank xorg.conf , I get 3 terminal windows and xclock,  but my mouse and keyboard don't seem to do anything
    here are those errors:

I download xf86-video-fbdev just for fun before I saw your post, I didn't do anything as far as I could see.
    I commented these lines out:
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/Type1"
    Load "record"
    Load "type1"
B, I didn't install any fonts but now I installed a buch of random fonts:
    pacman -S ttf-ms-fonts ttf-cheapskate artwiz-fonts xorg-fonts-75dpi xorg-fonts-100dpi
and did some of what the X.org configuration wiki said:
    fc-cache -fv
    /usr/bin/fc-cache
    /usr/bin/mkfontscale
    /usr/bin/mkfontdir
    ln -s /usr/share/fonts/encodings/encodings.dir encodings.dir
    Then this I changed this:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Card0"
    Driver "intel"
    VendorName "All"
    BoardName "All"
    EndSection
EDIT, halfway through this post I realized I type in biagio's code wrong, I re-typed it and now my X works!
Thanks Everybody for the help! , here's the working xorg.conf for reference:

  • Option "ctrl:nocaps" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf ignored

    Hi all,
I have a single-user laptop, so I'd like to configure my X keyboard layout and options globally instead of doing it for any WM/DE I might happen to use.  And most importantly, the desktop manager (GDM) should already use my layout.  So my /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-evdev.conf contains this section:
    Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "evdev keyboard catchall"
    MatchIsKeyboard "on"
    MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
    Driver "evdev"
    Option "XkbLayout" "de"
    Option "XkbVariant" "dvorak"
    Option "XkbOptions" "ctrl:nocaps"
    EndSection
The result is that I have my German Dvorak layout in GDM and in whatever WM I choose there.  However, the ctrl:nocaps option seems to be ignored.  In GDM, CapsLock is still CapsLock, not an additional CTRL.  Why not?
Here's the Xorg.0.log in case that might shed some light.  (Well, it actually only shows that the options seems to be applied to all keyboard devices...)

Kebertx wrote:I have the exact same problem (now on version 3.12), and commented on your bug report. Did you ever get this issue resolved? Furthermore, did GDM apply some of your keyboard settings but not others - were you getting a dvorak layout but not the caps-lock control key?
Yes, exactly.  I do get the Dvorak layout that's set in 10-evdev.conf, but not the ctrl:nocaps option that's set there as well.

  • A single screen resolution in xorg.conf, YET X11 still startups wrong

Hi. There's something that has been bugging me for a while. When I boot the first time my thinkpad SL500, usually (95% of the cases) X sets the resolution to 1024x768. Yet the ONLY screen res available in xorg.conf is 1280 x 800. In order to get to 1280x 800 I init 4 && init 5 every time. Why is this and how to fix it?

As you can see, there's also a problem with the keyboard. How to get it working? Currently the keyboard layout is set via my DM.
    Thanks.

As I understand it your xorg.conf file needs fixing: you have 3 modelines:
    Modeline "1280x800@60" 83.91 1280 1312 1624 1656 800 816 824 841
    Modeline "1280x800" 104.35 1280 1360 1496 1712 800 801 804 835
    Modeline "1280x800" 88.68 1280 1352 1488 1696 800 801 804 830
in the Monitor section. Two of them have the same name, and in the in the Display section you are referring to a fourth mode "1280x800_60.00" that is never defined before.
Instead find out the correct mode from you monitor specs, then compute its modeline via cvt, then put that modeline into the Monitor section and refer to it in the display section.
