I am sorry to ask for help with this but I have followed the Wiki as best I can and still get (on startx) a 'No screens found' error.

  • Xorg Black Screen [SOLVED]

When I installed xorg and openbox using MarshviperX's script ( http://pastebin.com/f406f16ba ), when it boots, it just is a black-screen with 2 small white bars at the top, about 2 mm wide.
Says "Starting Simple Login Manager", then black screen.
    Here's a list from lspci:
    http://sprunge.us/DKFJ
    and xorg.0.log:
    http://sprunge.us/SUXW
    and xorg.conf:
    http://sprunge.us/fKgH
    Thanks!

I didn't install any specific drivers, I don't think...... I have Mobile Intel, look @ my lspci paste, it should be in there.
Edit: installed xf86-video-intel, still doesn't work.
Edit2: Solved it, changed the driver in xorg.conf

  • [SOLVED]Please help me convert this xrandr script into a xorg.conf

    Hi!
First of all, I hope this is posted in the right forum section.
My laptop is often connected to my tv when I'm at home, using only that screen. I have a xrandr script pasted in /usr/share/config/kdm/Xsetup that sets the resolution right for KDM, but it does not run early enough, so login screen looks weird, 70% of the screen is moved to the left and the rest is moved to the right. Kind of hard to explain. I am thinking a proper xorg.conf would solve this issue, but I don't really know how that would work out if the tv is not connected. Here is the script:
    #!/bin/bash
    if xrandr -q | grep "HDMI1 connected" > /dev/null ; then
    xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode 1360x768
    xrandr --output LVDS1 --off
    else
    xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1366x768
    xrandr --output HDMI1 --off
    fi
Rather basic, checks if tv is connected and makes proper adjustments if so. Would a xorg.conf work, or is there a file parsed earlier that I could use? KDM is started with inittab method. Thanks in advance!

  • [SOLVED]xorg.conf, my screen doesn't fit on my screen

Hi, I've got everything set up & working well except for my screen. The desktop is too big for the monitor, about a third of it is hidden off the monitor to the bottom right. I've looked at the wiki and tried xrandr, but no dice. I'm using the VESA driver which has always worked ok in other distros. Actually the crunchbang splashscreen was like this, but otherwise it was normal. I tried the openchrome driver, got a blank screen. Searched other BBS too. I don't know the term for this problem to search for. The drivers off the VIA site are for older kernels, I'd rather just get it working with VESA, with a 1Ghz CPU I don't see myself doing much in 3D anyway.

I didn't really fix the issue with xrandr, but I did manage to get my dual monitors to work with Xinerama.

  • [SOLVED]Xorg.conf, mouse config problem

The Rapoo M765 mouse can not work properly under normal mouse configuration.
The mouse goes beyond controll when config as below:
    hacksign@XSign [14:13:13] : ~
    >> cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-mouse-acceleration.conf
    #Section "InputClass"
    # Identifier "Mouse2"

    # Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
    # Option "Buttons" "7"
    # Option "ButtonMapping" "1 2 3 6 7"
    #EndSection
When there is no any configuration, the mouse can work abnormally. Movement and right/left click work fine, but I can not use scroll wheel, and the "go forward"&"go backward" mouse key can not work too.
(I know Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" is the configuration of scroll wheel emulation.)
The real problem is 'mouse beyond controll',the cursor goes crazyly on screen ....
I guess it is something wrong of ButtonMapping option. But when I tried to get button number from command xev, when scroll wheel scrolles, I get something below(the scroll wheel movement is identified as a key event~):
    //left click

    Thanks for reply !
change Driver 'mouse' to Driver 'evdev',solved cursor goes beyond controll problem.
but I still can not use scroll button and 'go forward'&'go backward' button.
(BTW:evdev_drv.so is from local/xf86-input-evdev-trackpoint, and local/xf86-input-evdev-trackpoint package is from AUR)
I think, maybe something wrong with my button number mapping, but I still can not get scroll button number with 'xev' command....
    below is my configuration:
    hacksign@XSign [17:15:19] : /var/log

olive wrote:In the config file you mentioned, all is commented; do you mean that you have problems when you have uncommented it? You should not use the mouse driver (old deprecated driver) but evdev. Try to remove xf86-input-mouse and xf86-input-keyboard (same as before, this is deprecated and handled by evdev) and remove also a "joystick" driver if you have it (I have had problem with it conflicting with the evdev driver).

  • [solved] [xorgserver 1.6.1] and the minimalist xorg.conf

    Hello new xorgserver users
According to the recent xorgserver upgrade to 1.6.1 I've got blackscreen eachtime I started X. The only way to solve that problem (I'm driving a nvidia desktop) was to replace nvidia driver with xf86-video-nv and no use xorg.conf anymore (otherwise X crashes).
    But ctrl+alt+backspace miss me
And I try to use a minimal xorg.conf with the only three lines :
    Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "DontZap" "false"
    EndSection
    X crashes on start, my Xorg.0.log :

  • [SOLVED]XFCE requires xorg.conf

    Hi all,
I was using Zenwalk Linux since 4 years, and made my mind to install Arch Linux. I installed it using the help of Installation Guide. Thanks to the Arch Linux team for providing such a nice descriptive and useful forum through which any newbie can migrate to Arch Linux easily.
I thought of installing XFCE as my Desktop environment as I was using the same previously. I installed LXDM login manager, and the X session I edited to start up with XFCE.
With the login to init 5, I got the error as "Frequency Out of Range" and the screen went blank. Then somehow, I had the xorg.conf and xorg.conf-vesa file of my older Zenwalk System. I copied it to /etc/X11 directory and rebooted to solve the problem.
I dont know whether xorg.conf is needed or not. 'lspci' noted my video driver as
    01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. VT8375 [ProSavage8 KM266/KL266]
I have installed savage-dri and xf86-video-savage from Arch Repo.
I thought of sharing the same so that it might be helpful to someone (or else, if someone can give a better solution, it will be helpful for me too).
    Thanks in advance.
    With regards,

I'm not surprised that an old card would require an xorg.conf file to work correctly. Do you mean that another desktop environment from the Arch repos can work on your system without an xorg.conf? And only XFCE results in an error? Then that would be weird.

I download xf86-video-fbdev just for fun before I saw your post, I didn't do anything as far as I could see.
    I commented these lines out:
    FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/Type1"
    Load "record"
    Load "type1"
B, I didn't install any fonts but now I installed a buch of random fonts:
    pacman -S ttf-ms-fonts ttf-cheapskate artwiz-fonts xorg-fonts-75dpi xorg-fonts-100dpi
and did some of what the X.org configuration wiki said:
    fc-cache -fv
    /usr/bin/fc-cache
    /usr/bin/mkfontscale
    /usr/bin/mkfontdir
    ln -s /usr/share/fonts/encodings/encodings.dir encodings.dir
    Then this I changed this:
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Card0"
    Driver "intel"
    VendorName "All"
    BoardName "All"
    EndSection
EDIT, halfway through this post I realized I type in biagio's code wrong, I re-typed it and now my X works!
Thanks Everybody for the help! , here's the working xorg.conf for reference:

  • A single screen resolution in xorg.conf, YET X11 still startups wrong

Hi. There's something that has been bugging me for a while. When I boot the first time my thinkpad SL500, usually (95% of the cases) X sets the resolution to 1024x768. Yet the ONLY screen res available in xorg.conf is 1280 x 800. In order to get to 1280x 800 I init 4 && init 5 every time. Why is this and how to fix it?

As you can see, there's also a problem with the keyboard. How to get it working? Currently the keyboard layout is set via my DM.
    Thanks.

As I understand it your xorg.conf file needs fixing: you have 3 modelines:
    Modeline "1280x800@60" 83.91 1280 1312 1624 1656 800 816 824 841
    Modeline "1280x800" 104.35 1280 1360 1496 1712 800 801 804 835
    Modeline "1280x800" 88.68 1280 1352 1488 1696 800 801 804 830
in the Monitor section. Two of them have the same name, and in the in the Display section you are referring to a fourth mode "1280x800_60.00" that is never defined before.
Instead find out the correct mode from you monitor specs, then compute its modeline via cvt, then put that modeline into the Monitor section and refer to it in the display section.

  • [SOLVED] Prev working xorg.conf won't work with new nvidia

So I just upgraded to the latest nvidia driver.  Previously, my xfx 6600 and dell 2001fp could display 1600x1200 just fine, but now it's ratcheting X down to 1400x1050 (even though 1600x1200 is the only option I've specified in the xorg.conf).
    Any ideas?

  • [Solved] xorg "no screens found" on laptop with nvidia + intel Optimus

Startx gives fatal server error:(EE) no screens found
After installing arch on my laptop, I followed the xorg arch wiki to install the Xwindow system.
    I installed  xorg-server, startx
lspci -k | grep -A -2 -i "VGA" shows two graphic cards (see below). I guess the I am using the NVIDIA.
    I installed nvidia-utils-337.12-1 , nvidia-337.12-1, nvidia-libgl-337.12-1
    After that I ran nvidia-xconfig
    startx gives the above error.
    What can I try next?

    Hi Karol,
Thank you for the suggestion. I read the wiki Nvidia#No_screens_found_on_a_laptop.2FNVIDIA_Optimus .
It says "On a laptop, if the NVIDIA driver cannot find any screens, you may have an NVIDIA Optimus setup : an Intel chipset connected to the screen and the video outputs, and a NVIDIA". This seems to be the case for my latop.
The wiki suggests three options to get around the problem:
    1) NVIDIA drivers now offer Optimus support since 319.12 Beta [[3]] with kernels above and including 3.9.
    2) Another solution is to install the Intel driver to handle the screens
    3) Enter the BIOS and changed the default graphics setting from 'Optimus' to 'Discrete' and the install NVIDIA drivers
    I tried them all:
    1) I had NVIDIA driver version 337 installed, but I don't know how to turn on Optimus support
    3) I check my bios settings, but there is no such option
    2) I removed the nvidia drivers and then installed intel drivers. I removed /etc/x11/xorg.conf
startx now find screens. I guess there is no 2d or 3d acceleration, but it works
    Thank you
    Sjoerd

  • Creation of Functional, Minimal, and Correct Xorg.conf [SOLVED]

Being fairly new to GNU/Linux in general, and totally green in doing things myself, I foolishly avoided the building of an xorg.conf. Following the beginner's guide in the wiki, I just did an "xorg --configure" which created a base xorg.conf for me. It worked, and I noticed no problems in the general use of my window manager (xmonad). I have an ATI Mobility Radeon X1300.
I discovered today that I was using the radeonhd driver which was giving me terrible performance in OpenGL applications, so edited xorg.conf to revert back to the plain radeon driver. Upon restarting X, my performance problems were gone, but my fonts in the Firefox interface devolved... I have taken this a wakeup call to actually write a good xorg.conf and to understand what everything in it is for.
I have done plenty of configuration, though I have never before looked into editing the dreaded xorg.conf, coming from Ubuntu, so I know very little. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Specifics:
    What parts are necessary?
How do I get the fonts I had before back?
Graphics is all that concerns me, I have no strange input devices, and my touchpad works fine (I configured the fdi files for that).
I will list my current xorg.conf below. Fonts worked before I changed the driver from radeonhd to radeon and enabled the option for EXA. Before these changes, all the text contained therein was created automagically by xorg. I have a feeling most of this is unnecessary.

    skottish wrote:
X searches all of the directories that you had in your original xorg.conf file, and it will load whatever it needs automatically. I don't think your problem is specifically with xorg.conf (or lack of), I think what you're seeing is the DPI changing between drivers.
Try this with each driver loaded and see if they're different:
    xdpyinfo | grep resolution
    Ah, yes indeed!
    radeonhd: 96x96
    radeon: 129x127
How do I get X with the radeon driver to use 96x96?
EDIT: Adding a dpi argument of 96 to /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc fixed the problem. I didn't occur to me that the two drivers would use different dpis.
    Thank you so much!

The application builds fine and installs just perfectly, the troubles comes from the default Xorg configuration is no longer stored in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, it's now stored and read from numerous files under /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ where just so happen to be my 5-nvidia.conf.
    Starting xpra via:
    xpra start :100
    Causes:

    2013-10-03 19:56:30,895 removing socket /home/torxed/.xpra/archie-100
tl;dr: 5-nvidia.conf is trying to get loaded after xf86-video-dummy is loaded (which is the default for xpra).
Now to the question: What's the best practice because there's no information about this issue, and i can't be the only one who's run in to this since the xorg.conf was removed. At the moment I move all my nvidia configs out of the way, start xpra and move them back in. This works for the better part as long as i execute xpra with my own scripts.
But is there a better way (which doesn't perhaps include recreating xorg.conf since that appears to be something you should walk away from)?

Good thinking! (xpra is basically just screen but for x, or a X11 tunnel via SSH).
After a really quick poking around and remembering that xpra really just uses xorg-server-xvfb and at the very bottom of /etc/xpra/xpra.conf there's a line that says:
    xvfb=xpra_Xdummy -dpi 96 -noreset -nolisten tcp +extension GLX +extension RANDR +extension RENDER -logfile ${HOME}/.xpra/Xorg.${DISPLAY}.log -config /etc/xpra/xorg.conf
Appending -configdir appears to be working.
    Here are the full steps:
    [torxed@archie ~]$ sudo cp -r /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d /etc/xpra/
    [torxed@archie ~]$ sudo rm /etc/xpra/xorg.conf.d/*nvidia*
    [torxed@archie ~]$ sudo sed -i '$s/$/ -configdir \/etc\/xpra\/xpra.conf.d/' /etc/xpra/xpra.conf
*nvidia* would have to match your graphic-driver-config that would cause xorg-server-xvbf to crash.
I'll update the wiki and put a mention on the package about it because this either has to be standard or well known from the start because it really just breaks the package all together.

  • Turn off screen after a certain time in xorg.conf

    added
    Option "DPMS" "true"
    to monitor
    and
    Option "OffTime" "1"
    to serverflags
    and it doesn't work.
