Xorg freezes often!

Hi all,
is there any solution, workaround or fix for the Xorg freeze bug?
Description:
Xorg freezes often, no mouse (or mouse very slow), no keyboard, cold reboot required!

hi, does the nvidia driver fully support x.org 1.12 yet? I'm on AMD and the latest driver doesn't support it yet.
maybe you downgrade x.org and see if that does change anything. Put this on top of your repos in /etc/pacman.conf and do a "pacman -Suu".
[xorg111]
Server = http://catalyst.apocalypsus.net/repo/xorg111/$arch
by now there is a kernel update but other than that I have no idea. Could be a bug in the driver or gnome, too.

  • Firefox crashes when loading Gmail, and random other pages, and freezes often.

Firefox upgraded itself to 3.6.10 sometime last Friday, I believe, and every since I cannot get into gmail, and it freezes often. When I try to log into gmail it will crash immediately. Sometimes if I click "sign in" rather than hitting "enter" it will load, but will lock up or crash within minutes or seconds. It also will lock up if I have more than three or four tabs open, often when loading a video, and crashed while loading Nexis, which I use often for work to do research.
I have disabled add-ons, disabled extensions, run in safe mode, uninstalled and reinstalled, rebooted, downgraded, re-upgraded. Nothing has worked.

Problem does not seem to occur on a modern Win XP nebook with 1 gig RAM, but does on a relatively old laptop running Win 2000 with 98.5 MB ram.
Error message states that a script is running from a Firefox directory and asks to stop it. Crash occurs anyway!

You have SCADS of extensions and the things running. McAfee, Intego, Orbicule, CleanMyMac, and others I've not ever even heard of. My first recommendation would be to remove all of these and see if things improve.

  • Mac OS X Lion freezes often in help related activities

Hello, Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 freezes often on my 13-inch, Mid 2009 MacBook Pro. It seems it's (almost) always related to some activities with help system - it mostly happens when I use search input field in Help menu of any application or sometimes if system help viewer is opened.
The freeze is little bit strange. Typical symptoms are
mouse doesn't freeze, but cursor changes to spinning wheel when it's placed over application which caused freeze
frozen application doesn't respond to any input
it's possible to switch to another application with mouse or keyboard shortcut
any other application appears to be working correctly (mouse cursor is not spinning wheel at least), but UI interactions (with mouse or keyboard) get it to the same state as described above
applications can't be forced to quit, even with keyboard shortcut
finally, all applications and OS X freezes, mouse cursor still moves (even using Magic mouse), but nothing works anymore. Only solution is to switch MacBook off and on
I tried to delete Caches/* in /Library and ~/Library, but it didn't help. My MacBook is upgraded to 8 GB RAM with Kingston DDR3 modules (choosed via Kingston compatibility tool) and Kingston SSDNow V200 Series 256GB SSD disk (trim enabled with Trim Enabler). Crashes are probably not related to RAM upgrade, but it may relate with SSD installation (but I'm not sure when they appeared first).
Freezes almost don't happen in other situations than described.
Any ideas what could cause these problems? Thank you.

I am having similar problem with my machine, a Mac Pro (1,1) with Kingston V200 256GB SSD installed. It is fairly random when it chooses to freeze up, and you described it exactly-- I can still move the mouse and select programs, but nothing is happening, requiring me to do a hard reboot. I have noticed the past few instances it seems the trigger might have been an unattended alert box from Apple Mail (asking for a password) which I didn't see until getting home from work, so it could have been sitting there for hours. Not addressing the alert box holds up all the other Mail processes and I guess it just snowballs (?)
Anyways, I'm thinking the problem is this particular Kingston SSD (the V200). I have another Kingston SSD (the SSDNow V Series SNV425-S2/128GB) which I was using as the boot drive and it has worked flawlessly since I installed it. Later, I got a good deal on the V200 and decided to use it as a secondary drive to hold my working data, for things such as my huge iPhoto library file. Not long after installing the V200 I noticed the problems starting, and after a lot of troubleshooting I noticed this pattern with iPhoto:
If I had just booted up and was using the computer actively and then launched iPhoto, everything was fine. If the computer went idle for a while and then I launched iPhoto, I would get an error about it not being able to write to the iPhoto library (remember the library was housed on the V200). After many trial and errors I found that the solution to this was to use Disk Utility and unmount the V200 (sometimes having to force eject it), then remount it, and then I could run iPhoto fine.
And then of course there were times when I was just trying to browse the V200 in the Finder and it would cause the system freeze as described above. It seems like the drive somehow goes to sleep and then you just can't get it to wake up and it causes all sorts of problem. Whenever I have to hard reboot I run FSCK in single user mode, and I've been getting this error notice a lot:
    AppleAHCIDiskQueueManager::setPowerState(0x1c7b1600, 1 ->2) timed out after 100892 ms
    SATA WARNING: Enable auto-activate failed.
However, it will finish the disk check and say the disk is OK, with that "File System was Modified" note. Then when I run the check again it goes through with no problems.
I ended up doing a warranty exchange with Kingston and got a new replacement drive (as opposed to them refurbishing the drive I sent in). I am now using the new V200 as the boot drive, which is turning out to be a bad idea, but I kind of wanted to test it out.
I read on this forum that it might have been my Icy Dock adapter case, which is used to fit the SSD into the Mac Pro hard drive sled, perhaps a faulty case causing the problems. But when I installed the replacement drive I nixed the Icy Dock and have it directly connected, and the problems still remain. I had used TRIM enabler at one point but turned it off long ago to troubleshoot, so I don't think that affects this problem.
Incidently, while I was waiting for Kingston to send back the replacement V200, I was using an external firewire drive in its place as a secondary data drive (ie. the drive housing my iPhoto library) and never had any problems or freezes.
So that's my woes. I can't pinpoint it exactly or definitively but the evidence I have points to something screwy with this particular Kingston SSD model. I am going to contact them again and see about returning it for a refund. If anyone has any helpful information or insight I'd appreciate the info.

  • My MacBook Pro w/ Mountain Lion 10.8 is freezing often. What should I do?

My MacBook Pro w/ Mountain Lion 10.8.3 has been very sluggish recently. It freezes often. It is slow downloading from the Internet. Applications are slow to load and sometimes freeze in mid use. If I accidentally click on something that I didn't want to do, and then reclick what I wanted, it gets frozen and seems to take forever to straighten itself out. I try to Force Quit,a dn many times nothing happens.

The next time you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • Solaris 10 x86 - Xorg freezes

    Hi
I installed Solaris 10 in a Toshiba A10. I'm using it with no problems, but if I left the computer idle (without keyboard/mouse input) for about
20 minutes, Xorg freezes (at window manager, dtlogin greeting, xlock, ... any place)
Accesing the machine (telnet/ssh works fine) and killing Xorg resets to dtlogin greeting screen.
    /var/adm/messages, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, /var/dt/Xerrors give me no clues
Latest patches are installed, many bios options was tried
    Any ideas, please ?
    thanks

I configured full power. X freezes with image on screen (no blank screen). I suspect of usb (kbd and mouse are usb). Disabling legacy keyboard emulation had no effect.

  • Xorg freeze when my mouse moves from one screen to another :/

    Hello,
I have a computer with two graphics cards nvidia:
    - GeForce 7300 SE/7200 GS on a PCI Express port
    - GeForce FX 5200 sur on a PCI port
    I use 3 screens:
    - 2 on PCI Express card, one on the DVI port and one on the VGA port
    - 1 on the VGA port of the PCI card
I configured my BIOS for my motherboard that has an integrated chip to boot the PCI Express card. I configured my xorg.conf to have a TwinView display mode on my two screens of the PCI Express card and to have the screen on the PCI card separately.
1 week ago my setup worked great, no worries. Since I rebooted my PC, when I slide my mouse from the PCI Express screens to the PCI screen my xorg freeze and I can't switch to a console with ctrl + alt + F1. My PC is still available in SSH but can't kill the Xorg process with a kill -9. I had to make 2 / 3 update between two reboot, I think it must come from there: surely a problem with a kernel update  or nvidia driver update ...
Here I am lost, I do not know what to do to rectify the situation. If someone has an idea ... I'm taker

  • Cursor is freezing often after installing leopard

I don't know if this is just a coincidence or not but my cursor freezes often since I installed leopard on Friday. How can I solve that? So far I have been turning off the computer then turning it on to make it work. Help

Mine too. New Macbook Pro, upgraded to Leopard and started then. Continued after 10.5.1. I ONLY use the track pad. And it's only after sleeping and waking. Independent of what is running (including no apps) and processor is not being worked at all. Only cure is reboot....
I also get slowish shutdown, and once or twice a half wakeup from sleep - drives get power, but no screen.
Wondering how many who have these problems are running eyetv, or Awaken - something with wakeup style agents in the background?

  • My MackBook Pro freezes often..!

My 13-inch, Early 2011 MacBook Pro freezes often. I bought this MacBook Pro for the school and it has been a frustating experince. The MBP lockes during
browsing, editing word docs, PPT presentations or sometime middle of hosting GoToMeeting meetings. The worst part was it locked during a timed test for my MBA program. I am very disappointed with Apple...!!
    MacBook Pro Configuration:
    13-inch, Early 2011
Processor  2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB
    Serial Number  C02FNZ3RDH2G
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)
    I have tried following things:
    1. Using Disk Utility repaired HD and permissions.
    2. Using Activity Monitor monitored Page Outs and System memory.
    3. I went to Genius bar twice. They formatted the hard disk and reloaded Mac OS 10.7.4. It did not fix the problem. They ran full performance test but did not find anything.
My Fall Semester is starting next week and I will really appreciate if someone can help me to resolve this issue.

  • My iPad 2 is freezing often

My iPad 2 is freezing often.

Please tell me that it has NEVER been jailbroke.  If that's the case, here are some standard repair procedures:
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • [SOLVED] Xorg freeze with nvidia GeForce 210 when resizing terminal

    Hello,
I am working on Archlinux. My computer freeze when I resize a terminal window.
To reproduce the problem, I follow the below steps :
1- launch openbox (with tint2, xcompmgr and nitrogen)
2- start the "terminal" console emulator (with true transparent background)
3- launch opera and go to a website which take a while to load (with a lot of data) (I used http://www.lemonde.fr)
4- while the website is loading, switch to the terminal window and double click on the title bar to maximize it
         5- the box freeze
I am not able to take the control back. I cannot exit or kill Xorg / Openbox. I cannot switch to a text terminal (ttyx). No key sequence is working.
Only a hard reset of the box is working.
I have tried to disable the transparent background of the terminal window without success.
I have tried to not start xcompmgr without success.
The problem also occurs with rxvt-unicode instead of terminal.
It seems the problem happens more often when using console emulator based on vte.
vte itself has the same issue.
The only workaround I have found is to disable the harware acceleration with the below parameter in the xorg.conf file:
    Option    "RenderAccel"    "true"
The problem with this workaround are poor graphical performances.
Could you please let me know if you have any idea / clue to identify / fix this problem ?
    Thanks and regards

    Hi jasonwryan,
Your thread helps a lot. I saw a lot of posts but not this one.
This workaround is fine for me to wait the fix.
    Thanks a lot
    Workaround :
It seems the problem might be linked to transparent items like background.
As explained in the above thread :
According to the bug report the nVidia driver is freaking out and creating too many events, which causes an event buffer in Xorg to overflow.  It works OK with the older Xorg, though.
So the temporary solution is to downgrade 3 packages.
    Install the tool to downgrade
    > yaourt -Sy downgrade
    Downgrade
Note the item number can change
    > downgrade xf86-input-evdev
    Hit "s" key
    Choose 2 (xf86-input-evdev-2.6.0-2-i686.pkg.tar.xz)
    > downgrade xorg-server
    Hit "s" key
    Choose 1 (xorg-server-1.9.4.901-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz)
    > downgrade xorg-server-common
    Hit "s" key
    Choose 1 (xorg-server-common-1.9.4.901-1-i686.pkg.tar.xz)
Be carefull : don't update these 3 packages when updating your system (pacman -Syu) since it is not fixed.

  • Mysterious xorg freeze-up (xmonad)

So, I have a problem. I'm running Arch x86_64 on a laptop, xmonad as my window manager, booting with initscripts, and starting X by calling startx from .bash_profile like this:
    # ~/.bash_profile
    [[ -f ~/.bashrc ]] && . ~/.bashrc
    exec nohup startx > .log/xlog &
    exec vlock
And my problem is, that sometimes Xorg crashes. My notifications freeze, Conky and xmobar clock stop, the whole desktop freeze and becomes uninteractive. The mouse pointer is movable, though. There is no notable peak in hard drive access. I am able to switch to another virtual terminal and log in, or switch to tty1 and log out the current user. It seems to occur more often when the system is freshly booted, just after I have logged in, the desktop is loaded and nm-applet's notifications show up, but it may also occur on a system that has been running for hours.
I have no idea what may cause this, I have checked dmesg | tail, the output of the X server (logged to ~/.log/xlog), /var/log/errors.log and /var/log/everything.log, and noticed no unusual behaviour, at least nothing I can tell. Does anyone else get similiar crashes, or know what may be causing them?

According to This wiki article, it seems like "exec" just logs the user out when X is killed. I followed a wiki page on Arch Wiki to obtain this config, I think it was more or less copy-paste. This has not changed for the past 8 months (at least), so I think it is unlikely to cause this newly occurred problem.
I uninstalled notify-osd-customizable and notifyconf, and installed notify-osd instead when I got two crashes in a row upon login, and so far so good. Maybe it is a problem with notify-osd-customizable, but I don't know if I can confirm this.
