Xorg fullscreen is squished

I got a new TV here recently and decided to use it instead of my older monitor. The max resolution that the TV says it can handle is 1920x1080@60Hz, but after much tinkering I am only able to get 1080@50Hz. This wouldn't be a big deal, however the display doesn't take up all screen space. As in there are large black borders on the sides of the display, even though my NVidia server settings and TV both agree it's 1920x1080. The screen also looks squished, I can tell that the aspect ratio is off. So, I can get the proper resolution but there is something scaling it into some weird ratio. I (almost) know this isn't an issue with my TV settings. Below are my Xorg log and config. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys. However none of that has worked for me yet. I moved my xorg.conf and made 10-monitor.conf because it didn't exist on my system. Filled it with the right information, once from my original xorg.conf and once with a new section written straight from nvidia-xconfig. Problem still remains.

  • VLC controls go MIA in fullscreen & Xorg 100% cpu

    Hey guys,
I ran across a weird issue where randomly (although rather frequently) VLC's controls will visibly vanish but still be "usable." There's a semi-visible box where the controls should be and I can hover over and see tool-tips.
I'm not sure if this is a VLC issue or an Xorg issue since Xorg will peg my CPU while in fullscreen and continue doing so after VLC is done. I was wondering if anyone else has seen such a thing happen before and if anyone knows how to fix it (or at least have some leads).

I don't think screenshots are doing the issue justice here... Basically, the control box near the bottom of the fullscreen videos gets overlaid by the video so it's no longer visible (as it would normally when it's fullscreen) and when you hover over the control box, the box is "there" and usable but you can't see it. The video likes to lag a little where the box is supposed to be so you can make out the outline of the box by where the video starts to lag and tooltips are available. That's really all there is to it and I can't really manage to capture that on a screenshot. I'll keep try and see if I can finally get one that's lagging enough to be clearly visible.

  • Xorg, twinview fullscreen applications

    Hi,
after the upgrade to the new Xorg i had to create a new Xorg.conf. I configured my two monitors with nvidia-settings. Everything is working fine, except fullscreen applications (like games - UrbanTerror or zsnes for example). Those will be displayed centered on both screens (one half on the left and one half on the right monitor). The problem occurred to some people in this forum but no one has posted a solution to this. Is this really such a big problem?
Fullscreen videos played by totem are shown correct on one of the monitors.
Has anyone an idea how to solve this?
    Thanks
    VR

The bug still seems to exist. I just wanted to inform you, that i found another workaround:
I tested XFCE and found the "fullscreen window option" in the context menu of the top-window-bars (Shortcut Alt+F11). It sets the selected window to an undecorated-fullscreen-window and that's the most comfortable workaround to me that i've found. Other window managers should support this kind of undecorated-fullscreen too.
Not that much magic but i only found it by accident - weird.

  • Problem with Wine, NVidia and fullscreen games

    Hi,
I'm writing about a problem i recently noticed with wine, nvidia gpu and fullscreen 2d games.Basically the problem is as follows - i am running arch with the latest kernel and nvidia drivers on Thinkpad T61 with NVidia Quadro NVS 140M. I have a problem with old 2d games like Red Alert 2, Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Diablo 2, Heroes 3. All of these games do not support the native 1440x900 resolution of my screen and all of them work fine in window mode but crash if fullscreen is selected. I managed to get some of them working by making them work at higher resolutions. For example although Red Alert 2 does not support 1440x900, it can be easily made to work at that resolution and after i applied the necessary settings it worked. The same was with Heroes 3 - by default it does not support 1440x900 and it used to work only i window mode but there is a HD mod which allows it to run in higher resolutions and after i applied it it worked perfectly in fullscreen. I haven't thested Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale but i think it will work there too.
The problem is that i cannot use this approach to all games - for example i must run Diablo 2 and Starcraft in their original resolutions. I read somewhere that the problem is that wine can only change between the resolutions described in the xorg.conf file and if doesn't find the necessary resolution the game will crash or will only take the portion of the screen that is its resolution - for example when i play Starcraft rather than stretching it to the whole screen it simply takes 640x480 pixels of my screen and the game is displayed in the top left corner of the screen leaving everything else black.
I didn't have this problem before - it is something new though i'm not sure since when do i have the problem because i rarely play games. As for the idea that the problem may be related to the resolutions defined in the Xorg.conf file, my xorg.conf is automatically generated by the nvidia installer and there are no resolutions defined there.

    Try nvidia 304.48
I remember that issue, with the 302 series.
I have Nvidia 304.48 installed and the problem still exists (it also happens with Catalyst). This didn't occur with 295.59 using the same version of Wine.

  • Heavy slowdowns in Xorg and Terminal

    Hello folks,
Yesterday I put together a new system (Dual Arch and Windows 7) and I am running into a few issues and  I have no real idea where exactly to look for.
    My system:
    CPU: Intel i7 4790k
    Mainboard: MSI Z87-G43
    RAM: 16GB DDR3-2400
    Videocard: MSI NVidia GTX 970
Drives: SSD Samsung 850 (/dev/sda1 = / , /dev/sda2 = Windows), HDD as data partitions for both systems
    Power Supply Unit has 600W
The installation of both Windows (which I installed first) and and Arch went without a problem and I followed the Installation guide step-by-step.
The video card runs via the nvidia driver. I'm Using plasma-next/kde and sddm to login.
I have two monitors, both connected to the GTX card - one via HDMI, one via DVI.
    Here's where the problems start:
Soon as Xorg launches (via sddm or lightdm), my whole system starts to run extremely slow. First I thought it was only Xorg acting up. Animations run extremely slow, moving windows is slow, too - even keyboard input and cursor movements shutter. This seems to be triggered as well by opening fullscreen windows, opening the KDE start menu, the yakuake dropdown console, etc. However if I switch over to a virtual terminal scrolling text there (dmesg for example) runs extremely slow, too.
Windows SEEMS to run fine from what I can tell (also 3D applications there seem to work just fine).
First I thought the internal video chip was active. However the i915 module is not loaded and the integrated video card also does not show up in lspci. HOWEVER Xorg.0.log shows way more monitor connectors on NVIDIA(GPU-0) then my card actually has - it lists the connectors of the integrated video! And thes elistings in the Xorg.0.log repeat over and over and over which what makes me believe the issue MAY be connected to the internal video chip nonetheless. But again, the modules don't seem to be loaded and in the BIOS of the board I cannot disable the integrated video - aside from setting PEG as the primary video interface (which I did).
nvidia-settings was also segfaulting on numerous occasions which was however fixed by installing the intel-ucode package and redoing the grub.cfg.
Apart from that, I an pretty helpless right now and I hope someone here may be able to give me a few hints on what to look for.
Here are some logs that hopefully are helpful to you to help me.
journalctl -p 0..3 -xn is empty.
Xorg.0.log (note the repeating lines of NVIDIA(GPU-0)):

    Hi linderox,
Can you please give more details about what you are trying to do ?
KDE is one thing, Xorg an other thing and a terminal is also an other thing.
Changing language in KDE : do you mean the language of the KDE applications (English, French, Spanish ...)
Language in Xorg : what is this ? The only language I have ever configured in Xorg is my keyboard mapping.
Language in Terminal : what is this ? The LANG environnement variable ? the Local used to display characters (UTF8, us_US@UTF8, fr_FR@ISO8859-15 ...) ?
Than you for providing more info

  • Xorg / catalyst / kernel upgrade - Frozen screen and input [SOLVED]

I knew it, never upgrade xorg/graphic drivers when using ATI cards, just bless your god when it works and never touch it again. But I got tempted and I did a full system upgrade, and now... my xorg is broken.
I'm using ATI proprietary drivers catalyst 8.12-1 with xorg 1.5.3-3. My card is an ATI x1950 pro.
It used to work perfectly, but since the update, when i startx I just get a terminal (because of my .xinitrc) in fullscreen without my window manager getting launched, and my mouse in the middle of the screen; and nothing responds the mouse won't move, even ctrl+alt+backspace won't work. I have to ssh on my machine and 'killall X'.
I tried starting off with a default config (using aticonfig --initial -f), but still the same problem.
I have a dual screen setup.
I disabled AIGLX and Composite, but no success.
If I fail to repair this, since I made a backup of my pacman database, I could revert it right ?
Please help us, us pwned ATI users !

edit: weird thing (or not) but DPMS (or whatever it is, the thing that turns off my monitor after some time) seems to work, altough moving the mouse or pressing the keyboard doesn't wake up the screen. Has this something to do with my mouse and keyboard not being recognized by xorg ?
edit2: omg yes it is ! I added:
    urxvtc -e 'screen'
so when I startx an un-window-managered fullscreen terminal launches with a screen session, and if I ssh on it I can type in this terminal from another computer, and the screen actually displays what I'm typing, so that's definitely an input problem !
Final Edit: Well all solved, concerning the "frozen" stuff, it was just that my keyboard and mouse weren't detected because of the new hotpulg thingy (check http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … otplugging for more info, or just add 'hal' to your rc.conf), then restored my original xorg.conf, rebooted and it all went back to normal (: ). Hope this helps.

Hmm, I wonder what it would reveal if someone read the news? http://www.archlinux.org/news/424/
Even your Xorg.0.log is telling you the problem.

  • Issue with fullscreen gl and screen corruption...

    Hi.
I am running dual monitors on a radeon x1300 with the ati catalyst drivers (version 8.7-2).
Whenever i attempt to run a gl program fullscreen my displays corrupt.  in windowed mode they work fine.  I think this might be an issue with fullscreen trying to stretch across both displays.  is there a workaround for this so i can run fullscreen on one of the monitors?
edit:  here is my xorg.conf.  maybe something in there might be helpfull...

I did end up finding a workaround for this.
    Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "Xinerama" "1"
    EndSection
It seems to turn both monitors into a single screen.
The gl app runs in one of the screens while in fullscreen mode and corruption is limited to the "inactive" monitor.
Its clunky to use with any other application though because of how windows maximize across both monitors instead of just one.
Is there a good way to switch this option other than changing my xorg.conf everytime i want to switch?

  • Gstreamer playback appears to "squish" videos vertically

When using both totem and miro (both using gstreamer) the video has black vertical bars and the image appears squished and not fullscreen.
It has been this way for quite a while but all the videos play fine in mplayer and vlc.
Anyone have any ideas? I'm using the latest gstreamer plugins from the extra repos.

Mmm, not that I can tell.
However, I did find a somewhat hacky fix.
In gstreamer-properties set the plugin to custom and then the Pipeline to: "identity ! xvimagesink pixel-aspect-ratio=1/1"
Works like a charm and all my videos play in the proper aspect ratio. So, more or less solved I guess.
Edit: Erm, heh. Can anyone tell me how to put the solved tag on the thread?

  • Flash player to fullscreen non widescreen.

I have looked several places and I can't seem to find anyone that can help me with this I want to know how to get Flash Player(on websites) to go completely fullscreen on my 1280x1024 display without it keeping its widescreen values. I want it to fit to the whole screen without it being widescreen and showing black areas on the top and bottom to fill in the extra space. Is there any way to edit some computer settings or flash player settings to do this? I am specifically talking about viewing streams on Twitch.tv, but any flash player based site would also be helpful. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks

This is something that the website (twitch.tv for example) would need to implement, Flash Player does not dictate the video dimensions.
However, unless the widescreen content is zoomed/cropped or the aspect ratio is changed, causing the video to become stretched/squished, there's not much you can do about letter boxing when going from 16:9 to 5:4.

  • Using alternative xorg config script?

    Hello,
I've installed Starcraft Broodwar and it works just fine, but I can only run it in windowed mode which can get a little bit annoying after a while.
I've read that you can get it to run in fullscreen if you change your resolution to 640x480.
The thing is that I'm running a dual monitor setup, and I can't set it to such a low resolution it seems.

Anyone got a nice script that I can run to use another xorg config (with 640x480 set and no twinview options), run starcraft with, and when closing it maybe going back to the old xorg.conf, if it's possible to do this
    Or any other ideas/suggestions?
    Thanks

    edit:
Thanks, I got it to work like you said. The only problem is that when I exit starcraft, I'm stuck in the 640x480 resolution, and trying to issue
chgres set 2560x1024@135000 (default one) gives me an error.

  • Mouse Too Sensitive in Fullscreen Apps

Normally on the XFCE4 desktop my mouse is perfect (using Synaptics driver on my Lenovo Ideapad S205) but if I open any fullscreen apps such as ScummVM, the mouse suddenly becomes incredibly sensitive and moves far too fast (and quite inaccurately too, making it hard to select some things as if the mouse is suddenly operating as a very low DPI).
This is just inside the app, if I leave the fullscreen program then the mouse if fine again.
Has anyone else experienced this before and does anyone know of a fix?

I would guess that it's a bug in SDL, and check the SDL bugzilla.
Also check the xorg bugzilla re synaptics bugs, 'cos Arch uses bleeding-edge xorg (I'm still on xorg-server 1.9.5 with patches pinched from Fedora and Mageia, because I found 1.10.x unstable).

  • Fullscreen on youtube

    Hello,
I am using the flashplugin-beta from AUR (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=47230) and have no bigger problems so far. (despite slow playback in fullscreen mode on nfl gamepass).
However, if I want to watch a video on youtube in fullscreen mode the flash-plugin uses the entire screen, but does not rescale the video. The video is in the center (original size), but with a big black frame around it.
Do you experience the same issue?
Thx for any tips how to fix it!

...it happened to me in the past, but not anymore.
    flashplugin 10.3.183.10
    firefox 13.0.1
    xorg-server 1.12.2
    nvidia-drivers 295.53
Also, i override VDPAU_NVIDIA_NO_OVERLAY=1 just for the browser for stability issues
and /etc/adobe/mms.cfg  is configured with EnableLinuxHWVideoDecode=1
My layout is a standard twinview spanned in Horizontal with both screens at 1280x1024,
    GPU is 9600.
    hope something will helps...

  • VLC fullscreen sometimes makes screen stay black after video ends

like the subject says, sometimes the screen just stays black when a video ends while VLC is in fullscreen mode.
I'm using VLC 2.0.8.a-1. I got the laptop in April, just in time for Revision 2013, had the problem more or less from the start, so that's since version 2.0.5 or 2.0.6
So far I haven't found a way to get things back to normal when it happens. I've tried
    press f
    press ESC
    close and reopen lid
switch to console (screen just stays black, even on consoles)
Apparently the only thing I can do is pop up a terminal window via shortcut and reboot.
As far as I can tell /var/log/Xorg.[0,1].log doesn't tell what's going on.
In case it's important, I've only experienced this on my Thinkpad T430, it never happend on my old ASUS laptop or on my desktop pc. An Intel issue maybe? The other two run on nvidia cards, the T430 does have an nvidia card in addition to the on-chip HD 4000 but I don't use it (I'd love to since the DP port is only usable with the nvidia card, haven't been able to make it work with bumblebee yet but that's a different issue).
Any ideas? Which log and config files do you need?

  • [Sony Vaio TZ] Xorg mapping wrong resolution

I recently bought a Sony Vaio TZ - awesome piece of equipment - but noticed my actual Xorg resolution was higher than what the specs said (by 2 pixels). This is kinda annoying...
Xrandr output before I use xrandr to set the correct resolution:
    [root@hermes stijn]# xrandr
    Screen 0: minimum 1024 x 768, current 1368 x 768, maximum 1368 x 768
default connected 1368x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right) 0mm x 0mm
    1366x768 60.0
    1360x768 60.0
    1024x768 60.0
    1368x768 60.0*
As you can see it says it detects 1368x768 as maximum resolution but lists the correct resolution (1366x768) as a possibility too.  My first reaction was to generate a modeline that would make Xorg behave, but that does not have the desired effect (it returns a 1368x768 line!):
    [root@hermes stijn]# gtf 1366 768 60
    # 1368x766 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 47.58 kHz; pclk: 85.64 MHz
    Modeline "1368x766_60.00" 85.64 1368 1440 1584 1800 766 767 770 793 -HSync +Vsync
I have tried setting a Modes line in xorg.conf like this:
    Modes "1366x768"
but that gives me the following message in Xorg's log:
(II) I810(0): Not using mode "1366x768" (no mode of this name)
Adding a 'Virtual' line with the correct dimensions like this:
    Virtual 1366 768
    doesn't do the trick either.
Grepping Xorg's log for both X sizes returns the following:
    [root@hermes stijn]# egrep "1366|1368" /var/log/Xorg.0.log
(II) I810(0): Display Info: LFP (local flat panel): attached: TRUE, present: TRUE, size: (1366,768)

    (II) I810(0): [drm] init sarea width,height = 1368 x 768 (pitch 2048)
Why the heck does the i810 map to this resolution? Xorg recognises the 1366x766 correctly no? Is there a way to make Xorg use 1366x766 without having to resort to xrandr? For what it's worth, I had this issue also with the vesa driver.

Ok. I went with xmodmap because xbindkeys basically does the same, only requiring you to install an extra package .
I mapped the eject button to eject too (surprisingly, as I didn't know at first the slim drive had a button, I thought the whole thing was pressure sensitive...). I mapped the AV button to a fullscreen instance of VLC .
I fixed all Fn keys except for the zoom key (don't know how to map that to e.g. Opera's zoom functionality yet) and the external VGA connector which I should still write a script for.
    Anyways, here's my handler.sh patch:

  • [Solved] Trouble with virtualbox and xorg-server-1.13

So I'm trying out Arch through VirtualBox. Everything has been great so far and I've installed dwm and even customized it a bit already. The problem is that I'm stuck in 1024x768... which is brutal on a 16:9 monitor. Ive installed the virtualbox guest additions through pacman and setup the modules in /etc/modules-load.d/virtualbox.conf and now when I reboot into x it fails and im stuck in the normal tty console.
Heres my xorg.conf.d config which is pretty basic
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Monitor0"
    DisplaySize 409 251
    EndSection
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"

    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"

    Depth 24
    Modes "1024x768" "1440x900_75.00"
    EndSubSection
    EndSection
My Xorg.log spits out this when I try to run X no screens found?
    Thanks for any help!
