Xorg Hard Crash with Radeon

I've experienced several apparently random Xorg crashes which leave my system with apparently no graphics though still running ( I can ssh in ) after upgrading xorg and xf86-vdieo-ati. I don't experience the same crashes on Debian so I'm betting it's not hardware failure.
Upon crashing, the monitor will display 5 or 6 pixels sheared across the screen with my cursor still rendered properly but everything else inaccessible. If I C-A-Backspace then the Xorg process terminates but my monitor no longer detects any video output. I restart remotely and the system is fine for another few hours.
I think the issue is probably with the radeon driver. Does anybody have any insight on what to be causing this or any options I could enable to make it more stable?
Here is the Xorg.0.log error message:

You probably ruled that out already, but with such random errors it is always worth to consider, that they may be due to temperature issues or defective RAM.

  • [SOLVED] Xorg crashes with radeon xpress 200, KDE and no KMS

Hi all, I'm experiencing an annoying problem with Arch. I'm using the xf86-video-ati driver, and in KDE 4.3.2, with compositing enabled, everytime I open a new window of any program and already having other window opened (for example, opening konsole and then opening chromium), X dies and goes to KDM login. I've made some tests and figured out that this occurs only when ati kernel modesetting is disabled and KWin's compositing is enabled. But when I enable modesetting, 3D compositing turns very slow. Is this problem ocurring with anyone else?
Everytime X dies, this message appears when I run dmesg:

Hi, I have extactly the same problem. Have you already rebuilt those patched mesa, libgl, and ati-dri?
This problem is really annoying, not least for coming so unexpected. But, as for me, I don't have time (and to be honest, any desire) to rebuild those with some cryptic patches. I just wonder, how such a big failure made into a mesa package?
[EDIT]: I reinstalled the KDE packages yesterday, I didn't encounter this problem in GNOME.

  • Can't get X11 to load, hard crashes with Geforce 8200M

I can't get Xwindows to load on a new laptop I recently got. Ubuntu Live 64bit works fine, even can install the NVIDIA drivers and get 3D support on it (tested this before I purchased the laptop). So in Arch Linux (64bit) I downloaded the main NVIDIA driver package, module loads fine. When I try to start Xwindows, I get a "bus error" as regular user. When I try root, my machine crashes hard (can't even toggle CAPS lock). I can't even load Xwindows with the VESA driver, it complains about MTRR not matching correctly.
Specs on the machine can be found here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu … ct=3860070
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I also tried the 190 beta drivers, same problems occur. I can get any log files if needed later, I don't have immediate access to the machine.
    Thank you in advance,

scriptmunkee wrote:Not sure if my issue is the same as yours, but I updated to night and had version 185.18.31-1 installed with kernel 2.6.30.4-1. That combination didn't allow Xorg to start properly. I don't get an error at all. I get a failure or a halt when the Nvidia driver attempts to replace the ACPI hotkey events
Are you able to load it properly using vesa of nv drivers? I can't seem to get mine to load with any driver- it always crashes hard.

  • Solaris 10 01/06 hard crash with firewire drive attached

I have Solaris 10 01/06 installed on a Sun W2100z workstation (BIOS is most recent available when last I checked in March). I have applied all publically available Solaris 10 patches that one can get without having a support contract.
I have an external firewire hard drive attached to the system but it's not powered on.
If I halt the workstation, power on the firewire drive, and then attempt to boot the workstation, Solaris will begin to load and then I get a kernel panic and crash dump. This happens every time.
My "mdb" skills are lacking, but if I issue:
    cd /var/crash/hostname
    mdb unix.1 vmcore.1
    I get:
Loading modules: [ unix krtld genunix specfs ufs ip sctp usba uhci s1394 nca random fcp fctl emlxs lofs nfs audiosup sppp crypto ]
    $cscsa1394_cmd_fill_cdb_rbc+0x332()
    scsa1394_cmd_fill_cdb+0x6f()
    scsa1394_scsi_start+0xe4()
    scsi_transport+0x60()
    scsi_watch_thread+0x2fa()
Anyone else having repeatable crashes on Solaris 10 01/06 x86_64 with firewire hardware attached?
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Hi Asgorath,
Unfortunately I do not have an answer for you but I
am experiencing the identical problem on a HP
Proliant BL25p Blade Server. Here is my hardware
    config:
CPU - Dual Opteron 2.6 Single Core
    Memory - 16gb
Controller - HP Smart Array 6i
    Logical drives - 1 (2x72gb RAID1+0)
I have tried the same things as you and I still get
intermittant boots. Power on and off does not always
work as the system still hangs. It's totally hit or
miss. Once it soes boot it seems to work fine. I have
also installed the latest Solaris 10 for x86 Patch
Cluster in hopes that some of the kernal patches
would fix the problem. So far no luck as the system
continues to hang...HARD!! HP was out to my site
today and the Eng. is going back to the group that
qualified Solaris10 on the HP Blades and see if they
have any input. If I receive anything back I will
post it here. I know this post is late and if you
have resolved please post your fix.Hi doc42755,
I have not come up with a solution as of yet, if I do come up with a solution i will most certainly post it here.
However, if you find the solution could you let us know in this thread aswell.
    Thanks

  • Xorg Random crash with no keyborad, display, termial

    Hi,
I am running arch in my sager laptop with two external displays (one via hdmi and other dvi). I am using aweome wm as my windows manager. I don't use a login or display manager. I boot to login prompt and lauch awesome using xinit. I have noticed a few times when i quit awesome, all my screens go blank. no terminal. however my keyboard is still working( i test it by togling the caps lock). I just type xinit (without any echo's in the display) and awesome wm gets launched and i can work. This never bothered me.
However recently, i am facing a wierd issue. At random times, the monitor, keyborard and mouse all get's disabled. However my system is still up. I just have no way to interact with it or see what it prints. so i do a ssh and noticed none of the xinit/xorg processes were running. however i don't know why the default terminal or login prompt is not working. (This defect appeared after a pacman update or a chages to boot resoluton of frame buffer). I treid searching all the logs could not find any error messages. May be i don't know where to look.
I can however bring the interface back up by running xinit from the ssh remote terminal. It actually brings awesome wm up in my actual machine. can some one point me in the right direction to diagnoise the reason i loose the default login prompt or reason for x crash.
    Thanks

    Any one ???

  • Hard crash....what does this mean????

I had a hard crash with a bunch of junk on my screen. Out of the junk I saw "system failure, CPU 1".
I have since booted up ok. Does that error or crash mean my computer is failing?
Help? I have a bunch of jobs pending. What do I do?

I didnt find much in crash reporter or the console but I did find this in library/logs/panic.log and it is relative to CPU 1. Everything else is for the wrong date. In the report below I included one from Jan 31 too because it looks like it happened before.

  • Xorg crash on radeon

Hello, so I posted this issue on reddit already, but now that I was able to register here I thought I would post it:
So for a while now my Xorg occasionally crashes. The problem is apparently the gpu driver, because it only occasionally happens when something tries to use it.
Today it happened when starting glxpixmap, but sometimes it also happens when I'm browsing with Firefox(mostly when huge images are displayed).
I have the Xorg log and it says something segfaulted, here's the log(cut down to fit the post limit):

anyway, the whole GUI stuff seems slugish too, I'm guessing there is no acceleration happening, how do I change that?
    I'm using XFCE with xfwm.
The GPU is a HD7970GHz and I'm using the FOSS radeon driver.
    Thanks in advance!

    alright, the glxinfo:
    OpenGL vendor string: X.Org
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD TAHITI
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 10.0.1
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.30
    and the full log:
    http://pastebin.com/2vNupFPA
Everything should be up-to-date as I always run pacman -Syu right after boot.

  • [SOLVED]Xorg crash with some applications when using double screen

    Hi,
I have a TV that I often use to watch dvd from my computer, and to do that I've set it up as a second screen in my xorg.conf, but on a daily basis I use a xorg.conf file with only my main screen. Up until last week I was able to use my second screen without problem, but yesterday I tried and it crashed instantly.
So I ran a few tests, amsn and vlc seems to be 2 applications that makes X crash (though there might be other, but I seem to be able to use chromium firefox and ktorrent just fine).
My WM is not to blame, I've launched X without any WM and vlc still makes X crash.
The problem does not happen when using a single screen.
I thought that my xorg.conf might be the problem, so I used nvidia-settings to create a new one, but that didn't change anything.
Here are my xorg.conf used for dual screen, and the logfile from the Xorg crash:
    # nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig

Sorry this doesn't really help with the Xinerama problem, but since you are using the nvidia driver, have you considered using Twinview instead? You could do composite stuff too with Twinview - last I knew, Xinerama had problems with things that want to use compositing. I don't know how your setup is but if you're not set on using Xinerama, it might be an option to consider.

  • My hard drive crashed with no backup.  How can I get the data from iCloud onto my Mac?

My hard drive went bad and needed to be replaced and I've lost everything that was on it (no backup - I know, I know...).  Fortunately much of my data was backed up either on icloud or my ipad but I haven't been able to find any information about restoring it FROM icloud or ipad TO my Mac, only about how to restore to an ios device.  I am running Lion.  Thank you!

I guess what I meant to say was that I can log on to icloud to see my contacts, calendars, etc but is there a way to get that data onto my computer?  In other words, how do I associate my new hard drive with my icloud account?  I am probably not phrasing this properly - sorry.  Three days ago (pre-crash) my desktop was configured to reflect my icloud info but I don't know how to make it do so again...does this make sense

  • Use of discrete graphics causes hard crash - (MacBook Pro 2010 with ML 10.8.2/3)

I have a client with a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro. He was having crashes with Lion so I upgraded him to Mountain Lion 10.8.2. The crashes did not go away.
I troubleshooted and with the help of gfxCardStatus noticed that every time his machine went to use the discrete graphcis he got the gray hard crash screen and system had to restart. Back then I tried a beta of 10.8.3 and it didn't help.
I noticed that if I created another user account (profile) it would not crash when the discrete graphics card was called upon.
So, I re-installed the OS (to 10.8.2), created a new profile and manually migrated pictures, documents, keychain, mail, movies, music and re-installed the relevant Applications. Everything was working fine and my client went on a trip to Europe and soon the crashes began again. Then he upgraded to 10.8.3 and the crashes got even more frequent (it seems 10.8.3 puts more applications on the discrete graphics list so it switches even more).
I am wondering what could have caused the crashes to begin. It was before he upgraded to 10.8.3. Some application or something he was using must have changed a setting or corrupted something to cause the crashing to begin. I haven't done this yet, but I'm sure if I create another user account it won't crash on it.
Any ideas where to turn my attention to see what is causing the shift from his working user account to a crash-causing one?
He has iLife, Office 2011, Final Cut Pro X, iPhoto Library Manager, VLC, Audacity, DropBox, FileMaker Pro 11, Flip4Mac Player, Fuze, GotoAssist, Handbrake, Skype, iSkySoft DVD Creator, iSkySoft Video Convertor, Onyx and Skype.
I know there are *MANY* others having problems with the automatic graphics card switching and it seems some are having more problems when gfxCardStatus is installed?

    is this your MacBook:
TS4088- MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Take a copy of the article with you when you go for service. They need to run a SPECIAL diagnostic to decide whether you have this problem. Do not leave until they run the special diagnostic. The "overnight run" does not detect this problem.
If they confirm you have the problem, they will replace the graphics chip, which is part of the motherboard. be prepared to hand over your Mac for depot repair. (Your backups must be up-to-date).

  • Full crash with graphic degredation and audio looping. Hard reset needed.

I haven't seen anything else like this posted so perhaps it's an isolated issue. However, I've been running my new late 2008 MacBook Pro for about a week and over the past couple days have had it start hard crashing on me. The graphics will freak out and the audio will stop what's playing and loop over. The computer is completely crashed.
This has happened running on both the 9400 and the 9600 graphics cards. Also, I've had it happen with and without an external display connected.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Here's a pic I snagged of what it looks like when the computer crashes. Sometimes the screen freaks out and sometimes it doesn't.

    You have 3 options:
    1. Call Applecare
    2. Go to a Genius Bar
    3. Do it yourself--no guarantees on this one! I don't like the look of the screen, and tend to think it is a hardware problem, notwithstanding the results of hardware test. Genius Bars have more extensive tools. If you belong to AppleCare you have a TechTool Deluxe disk that can run some tests as well. Archive and install (rather than erase and install) is an option, but my money is against it. All in all, I would call applecare first, then go to a genius bar.
    Good luck!

The easiest way to get back missing items?  Restore your whole hard drive with all your irreplaceable things like photos in about 20 minutes from the backup clone you make on a regular basis.
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer is designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is purchased content.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):
