Xorg issues

Hi, I installed Arch yesterday, and today I installed Xorg, gdm,xfce4 and fluxbox. The weird problem i have is that I cant start ANY program in fluxbox, whatever item i click on in the menu, noting happens (pc doenst freeze, it just does noting)
In Xfce, i can start firefox etc, but the changes i make (in firefox, and in the system) are not saved, if i restart X, everything is back like when i first started xfce.
This is cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

If anyone has an idea? Im very noob so everything is possible

Also remember fluxbox will let you generate a menu although it may not catch every program you have installed it will catch most. If nothing else it will get you started and you can add programs to the menu by editing the menu file in the .fluxbox folder. Also look over the fluxbox wiki entry for other info. Also the font directory issues you can fix by editing the font paths in your xorg.conf file located in /etc/X11/.

  • [SOLVED]Xorg issues

I just re-installed Arch, because in the process of removing the Debian install last night, GParted screwed up with my drive numbers which started giving me different GRUB errors every time I tried to boot.
Good thing I had a backup for my home drive.
1)So after installation, I tried using the xorg.conf that I had backed up, but if I do this my openbox session starts up but I cannot use my mouse or my keyboard. This is probably because of hal messing it up. I checked if hal was installed and running and I have even added it to my DAEMONS array. I also have the xf86-input-evdev and xf86-input-synaptics installed. Still no love !
If i try to manually start hal in the terminal, it always FAILS.
    2) Also I am currently using the vesa drivers and if I use a xorg.conf generated by nvidia-xconfig, I simply cannot get X to start. I get errors (I will post the errors after changing over to that xorg.conf file and pasting the relevant section from /var/log/Xorg.0.log) This is my current xorg(generated by hwd -xa)

Thanks skottish. All previously mentioned issues resolved. Now for a new one
I have installed a GTK theme from box-look.org and every time i start a GTK app I get these errors:

  • [SOLVED] ATI Catalyst / Xorg issue with Multihead (3monitor)

i'm having problems for a long time, with different versions of the ATI Catalyst driver and Xorg,
right now i'm using this versions,

    solved!
since the cursor used through the proprietary catalyst driver have issues, use instead the SW cursor,
    Section "Device"
    Option "SWCursor" "true"
    EndSection

  • Xorg issues with eeePC 1000HE

    Hello,
I'm trying to install Arch Linux and everything is going well until the part where I have to test Xorg. The first test (X -config <path>) always results in the same thing, black screen, nothing else. But the note in the beginner's guide says that it might be normal, so I proceed to the seconds test.
When logged in as root, startx works (a few term windows and a small analog clock), yet xinit just displays a small white term in the corner of the screen but keyboard and mouse don't work. When logged in as a non-root user (like it says I should be), both startx and xinit result in the same thing as xinit on root.
I've tried about 5 different xorg.conf configurations, and reinstalled Xorg twice.
    System:
EeePC 1000HE with latest Arch Netinstall i686
    Requested files:
    ~/.xinitrc > http://dpaste.com/85721
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf > http://dpaste.com/85722
    /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old > http://dpaste.com/85723
If you need any more information please do ask me, I'm not very experienced with UNIX but I'm not an absolute newbie either.
    Thanks very much for helping

Do you mean exec twm instead of exec xterm?
The description of the window manager you started as root resembled twm.

That's what I'm trying to do now...

run on user = very, VERY simple white box in the corner of the screen and black surrounding everything else?

Okay I removed the user from hal, but it was already in optical and storage.

  • [SOLVED]Xorg 1.10.902 upgrade - doesnt handle XI2 SD buttons...

    Hey everyone,
I just wanted to let everyone know that the latest Xserver update from yesterday, is a bad one!
Initially, you may not notice any problems. (which is probably how it made it through testing). However, anyone using any software that includes gestures, middle-clicks/right-clicks (with dragging) will probably notice this. and it's a big problem depending on what software you need to be able to use.
I had originally posted about Easystroke being broken (found in AUR, gesture recognition software). as this is how i noticed the problem. That discussion was moved to AUR forum, but it's not an AUR problem. It is a problem in the "EXTRA" repo, and thus a problem for anybody who may have, or will upgrade yesterday/today!!
In general desktop usage, you may not notice the problem.  Basically, mouse clicks/dragging do not work properly when using Easystroke, Opera, Chrome, Maya2011...and a bunch of other applications, i would assume. it doesn't seem to affect the First mouse button (or in my case the tip of my Wacom Stylus).
It is really noticeable in any applications that require "clicking/dragging"  with second/third mouse buttons held down.  Opera's navigation gestures do not work (hold down right-click and mouse your mouse) - usually you would get a big-black button on the screen, not anymore, it disappears instantly... in Easystroke your clicks will get held, and easystroke will not register a single input/gesture. In Maya2011, i am screwed until this is fixed.
you will be able to use your desktop just fine, but be aware xserver 1.10.902 should have never left testing! ...and you might want to wait to upgrade it until this problem ahs been fixed.
    The bug is upstream and apparently has been reported (upstream) by the people at Launchpad;
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … bug/757972
It's not an Arch specific bug, so i didn't file a bug report. i just wanted to let everyone know, as it isn't obvious if your not using certain types of software and combinations of whatever type of input (mouse/tablet) you are using....

@triplesquarednine:  I've been having Xorg issues with my synaptics touchpad and cursor movement for a while now. The solution for me has been to constantly downgrade back to the latest working Xorg packages. Please see the following thread:
Unusual Buggy 'Tabs' Behavior in Firefox & Pidgin Since Xorg Upgrade
Yes, I've read that thread. I don't plan on downgrading.  I can deal until it is fixed.  it doesn't actually affect me that much, and
I've been using MacOSX instead, for most of my work. Which is exactly why i still have OSX running, because it is rock solid and never gives me problems, ever   thus, it is a good fallback. (and most of the software i use in Linux, is also installed in OSX)
Hopefully, this is resolved soon, it's been a couple of days ~ and i hope upstream is taking this bug seriously, as it is a really stupid bug, that could have easily been avoided - had the code been tested properly, before pushing it out the door.
All that someone had to do, was try to do a mouse-grab, and they would have noticed... strange.
I also don't get why it hasn't been pulled from the extra-repo?!?!?!??  clearly, it is a broken package, and should not be distributed, or be available as an update in the extra repo at all ~ this just seems stupid to me, someone has really dropped the ball here.

  • [solved]wacom doesn't work after upgrade to xorg 1.6 and kernel 2.6.29

    hello..
i have already posted about that in testing-forums, but since xorg 1.6 and kernel 2.6.29 have moved to extra, though i'd create a seperate topic about that.
after i have upgraded to xorg 1.6 and kernel 2.6.29 my wacom device (as built-in, not usb) on my thinkpad x41t stopped working.
before upgrade i have used xorg with hotplugging enabled. everything worked fine.
after wacom stopeed working i removed everything regarding input devices from xorg.conf -> no change
put an fdi-file for wacom -> no change
    installed linuxwacom-dev -> no change
i don't really know, if it's a kernel or an xorg issue. loading wacom drivers manually still doesn't solve the problem. no warnings or errors about wacom in xorg-log or messages.log
how could i check, wether my system recognizes the device properly at all? it doesn't show up in lspci or in lsusb.
    any help would be great.

well, upgraded again to xorg-server 1.6, disabled hotplugging, installed linuxwacom-dev from aur and the wacom works as allways. (had to edit xmodmap one more time, since kbd returns other keycodes than evdev does :-| ). no matter, done is done.
but intel driver returns broken graphics if i rotate screen with xrandr.
i guess there is no way around this execpt switching to the ultra-slow legacy driver?
just for comparison - glxgears fps:
    intel: ~900fps
    intel-legacy: ~280fps

  • KMS / xorg 1.8 on intel 830m / 82830M

    Hi,
i run the old intel xf86-video-intel 2.9 on my beloved Vaio R600 HFP with a intel 830m / 82830M graphics chipset.
KMS is switched off by i915.modeset=0.
Now with the kernel 2.6.34 and KMS switched on, i get a console, but when X is started i get a dark screen without a mouse.
Anyone got this graphic chip running with xorg 1.8?
    Thanks.
    redada

When you upgraded the kernel and video card driver, did you upgrade xorg at the same time?  If so, then maybe it's an xorg issue and not an issue with your particular video card.
Note there have been some changes with xorg 1.8.  Namely, configuration files using hal are now ignored.  udev is used instead.  See http://www.archlinux.org/news/502/ for info.

  • Graphical installer issues..

    Hi people,
I would like to recommend a redesign of the initialization system to the graphical installer for the new Solaris Express..
I have a 256MB nVidia 6800GS series card which alas, Xorg has problems with some of these chipsets
and all we get is garbage when X initializes.
I can get around this by having X use VESA drivers instead of the typical NV drivers that it uses
by default upon finding an nVidia chipset until I can download binary drivers from nVidia itself which
never has this issue ( this is how I installed earlier Solaris releases )
Can I recommend that the installer always use a VESA driver, instead of searching for the closest match
to the chipset it finds - or atleast have a 'safe mode graphics' option that uses VESA - this is how Ubuntu gets around this issue.
As said, this is an Xorg issue, not a Solaris one.. it's a problem on Linux also, but the work around is easy enough.
    Cheers
    Dave

  • VLC controls go MIA in fullscreen & Xorg 100% cpu

    Hey guys,
I ran across a weird issue where randomly (although rather frequently) VLC's controls will visibly vanish but still be "usable." There's a semi-visible box where the controls should be and I can hover over and see tool-tips.
I'm not sure if this is a VLC issue or an Xorg issue since Xorg will peg my CPU while in fullscreen and continue doing so after VLC is done. I was wondering if anyone else has seen such a thing happen before and if anyone knows how to fix it (or at least have some leads).

I don't think screenshots are doing the issue justice here... Basically, the control box near the bottom of the fullscreen videos gets overlaid by the video so it's no longer visible (as it would normally when it's fullscreen) and when you hover over the control box, the box is "there" and usable but you can't see it. The video likes to lag a little where the box is supposed to be so you can make out the outline of the box by where the video starts to lag and tooltips are available. That's really all there is to it and I can't really manage to capture that on a screenshot. I'll keep try and see if I can finally get one that's lagging enough to be clearly visible.

  • Xorg crashes after logout

I have recently installed Archlinux under VirtualBox running on a Windows Vista Host machine.  The basic install went fine, but when after installing Xorg and KDE I found I get segmentation faults when logging out of KDE.
    My basic process was...
    1. Install base Arch system.
    2. Update entire system (pacman first then the whole system itself)
    3. Install Xorg
    4. Install KDE
    5. Install VirtualBox Guest Additions
I am pretty certain this is purely an Xorg issue (not related to the window manager) as I have tried Gnome as well with similar results.
I am a newbie when it comes to Arch so if this is a known issue and workaround, forgive me...

I realized that there was a 'virtualbox-additions' target available through pacman so I created a new clean virtual machine and installed Arch and used the 'virtualbox-additions' from the Arch repositories instead of installing the ones provided by VirtualBox.  So my process was...
    1. Install base Arch
    2. Update the entire system (pacman first, then the rest of the system)
    3. Install Xorg
    4. Install KDE
    5. Install 'virtualbox-additions' from the Arch repositories.
While I didn't get a segmentation fault from Xorg when logging out of KDE, the installed virtualbox-additions where not compatible with VirtualBox (at least not completely), i.e. Xorg/KDE was not able to be resized correctly.  So I then tried to install the guest additions included with VirtualBox manually.  This fixed the resizing issue but then the seg fault was back.

  • Any way to load an older Xorg?

The first time I installed Arch Linux everything worked great -- but since Xorg 7.04 I can't install the X server without it locking up. Is there any way to install the older version of Xorg via Pacman?
I should also mention that I have had trouble with the newer version of Xorg in Debian -- so it's definitely an Xorg issue.

I would see if you can go through the X.Org people to find a better solution. Simply waiting and hoping a new X.Org will be released with a fix isn't a very good plan, and the more these types of things are tracked down and fixed, the better the Linux desktop will be. It should be possible to track down the commit that caused your problem, and from there it should be simple to find a solution or for the X.Org people to make a patch.

  • [SOLVED] Eeepc 901 and 2.6.32 upgrade.. Black Screen!

I've just updated the kernel 26 package and.. After udev start all goes black! It's not a Xorg issue, because i've to start it manually.. Any idea??

  • Random freezes-please, somebody, help me find a solution that works!

I feel a little stupid posting a new thread for what seems to be (at the moment) a rather common issue, but almost every related thread I've come across seems to pin the blame on different things, and I want to consolidate all that I know about what's going on in one place.
On January 5 I reinstalled Arch on the family computer in my house, and for the first few days it seemed to be working OK, but as I was getting everything installed and set up correctly, I started experiencing random freezes.  Every package has been up to date since this was a brand new install, and the whole reason I was reinstalling was because the old setup was really messy and on a really old hard drive.  The old setup didn't experience any of these issues, however, which rules out hardware issues (the current hard drive was in the system, it just wasn't used for /).  The computer passes memtest86+ and mprime stress tests.
First, the problem(s): random lockups.  These range from application lockups that still allow mouse movement, but not clicking, with the keyboard remaining accessible, to full X lockups which disable mouse and keyboard functionality.  The former have only occurred a handful of times while the latter occur much more often.  I don't have an ssh server set up on this computer to know whether it would respond to use that way, but my assumption is that, yes, it would.  This seems to be a rather prevalent issue right now, but like I said, a lot of people identify different causes and workarounds/fixes only work for some people.
A few weeks ago I looked around and everything I was finding suggested it was a video driver issue.  I was using xf86-video-ati, so I switched to xf86-video-vesa.  Things worked fine for about a day (which, for the record, is not uncommon; the problem seems to come and go, as for about a week the computer worked fine and then today I had four lockups in a row) but then it started to hang again.  It's not a video issue.  It's not a hardware issue.  It's either a Gnome/GDM issue or an Xorg issue, a combination of both, or something else that is conflicting with either of those three.
I found this thread about X hanging whenever one presses enter.  My issue seems to match the user in this thread (with it's corresponding bug report), because sometimes it hangs when I press enter—but only sometimes.  The majority of the crashes, by my estimation, have nothing to do with whether or not I press enter.  Often I (or someone else in my house) will simply click something and everything will freeze.
Beyond this I cannot really describe much else.  However, here is some additional info which might help diagnose the problem.
    From Xorg.0.log.old:
    Fatal server error:
Caught signal 3 (Quit). Server aborting
.xsession-errors doesn't seem to contain anything worth noting.
When booting X also launches on tty2 instead of tty7.  In the first few days after the install I seem to remember it launching on tty7 initially, but it's possible that my mind is playing tricks on me and this is not the case.  If it is I do not know what accounted for the change.  /etc/inittab is identical to the file on my personal PC which runs GDM and openbox, but which is experiencing no problems whatsoever, and X opens on tty7 on it (and which is also completely up to date).  At post #13 in this thread there is a suggested edit for /etc/gdm/custom.conf, but it does nothing for me; X still opens on tty2.
GDM is the last daemon listed in /etc/rc.conf.  I've tried loading the daemons before it backgrounded (with @) and also regularly (without), and neither makes a difference.  The freeze often occurs when logging in or switching users, but I must emphasize that for the most part the lockups are completely random.
I am really hoping to find a fix, and the sooner the better, because 6 people regularly use this computer and constant freezes are unacceptable to my mind.  I also fear that the exact same error has been occurring on my friends' business computer which I recently updated some packages on, since I've been getting emails about the computer locking up.  Of course with that one I could simply downgrade everything I just updated, even though it'd be tedious to do so.

    both will resolve the issue.
Actually, how will running gdm from inittab help with this issue?
And I didn't understand what you meant by "remove agetty from tty2"
You know, I am pretty sure that the issue has to be with xorg. I was having this issue a lot a month ago, but then, a certain upgrade of xorg fixed the issue. I was fine for a few weeks. My computer never crashed. But, unfortunatly, a package in that same upgrade was broken and I ended up upgrading the system again a few weeks ago. xorg also upgraded at the same time. Now, my computer keeps crashing randomly and in random ways.
I think that the best thing to do is to keep up with the xorg updates, find one that works for your system and have pacman ignore all upgrades to xorg after that.
Actually, if anyone can tell me how to downgrade xorg to its state 3 weeks ago, it would be absolutely awesome.
    Thanks
Because if you use runlevel 5 you dont have agetty on TTY2 so it won't try and kill xorg all the bloody time
The problem is caused because GDM is starting so fast the XORG server it loads up checks for free VT's and finds TTY2 is empty and starts on it. THEN your inittab fires up agetty on TTY2.. which promptly causes hell to arrive in a handbag.
You really need to be less critical of people offering you advice.. and possibly even check what they have posted in the past.. like the threads from months ago dealing with this issue. (search is great you know)

  • Wrong display manager resolution

    Hi!
I installed Arch with LXDE as desktop environment and LXDM as display manager (as I did on two other machines before with perfect result).
Strangely enough, on this machine the screen resolution was not set automatically to the monitor's default (I am using the xf86-video-nouveau driver for my mx440 nvidia card). But chosing "default" in LXDE for the resolution changed it successfully from 1024x768 to 1680x1050 (so the native screen resolution is recognized, if not set, automatically). But LXDM or rather its login screen still comes in 1024x768 and looks aweful.
I suspected an Xorg issue and changed the 10-monitor.conf as proposed in the Xorg Arch wiki to my desired resolution. But that does not have any effect on LXDM's login screen.
Any ideas what might be wrong? Thanks
    Best

Back up the file somewhere, then you should remove the comments (everything after the "#" symbol, including the "#" itself), and remove the pseudo-mode (the "Modes" line). You don't need it. Xorg will set your desktop to the native resolution based on your monitor's EDID information.
    This is my 10-monitor.conf:
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Monitor0"
    VendorName "DELL"
    ModelName "U2311H"
    HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0

    Option "DPMS"
    EndSection
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nouveau"
    VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
    EndSection
    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Device0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    EndSubSection
    EndSection
Is there any reason you want 16 bit colour depth? See: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/FA … a_video.3F

  • New driver (Nvidia), gdm won't load

I am trying to install the appropriate Nvidia driver.  My computer has the NVIDIA NV17 GeForce4 MX 440 controller.  Based on the instructions at https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA I attempted the alternate install because my card is old.  Everything seemed to go OK until I rebooted and Gnome didn't load.  Below is my xorg log.  Any help is appreciated.

What do you mean by "alternate install"? Because (in my understanding ) wiki alternate install is about custom kernel not old hardware. I don't have experience with old nvidia cards but:
    compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.0
(EE) NVIDIA: Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module.
    NVIDIA GLX Module  304.37
looks like you trying current nvidia drivers (i.e. for hardware newer than GeForce 5xxx = not yours!). Go and RTFM more carefully, install older drivers from AUR for legacy hardware designed to work with your graphics card, check out Xorg compatibility (again, read wiki) or go with open source nouveau drivers which doesn't have Xorg issues and see if they work for you.
