Xorg, Nvidia and Monitor problem

It all started when I saw a strange startup problem (lower resolution than my usual 1366X768) and some startup messages, on my system (Pcc tower plus a Sony Bravia 32' TV, that I use as a monitor. I started this thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=105910 but soon realised my problem was elsewhere. Reviewing the xorg log I see that xorg is unable to read EDID from the monitor and falls to auto-selection of resolution resulting to a 1024X768 (further on DPI calculation is also affected). So, has anyone had the same problem or has any idea?
I should mention that I use a VGA cable (there is a possibility that I messed things up when I tried an HDMI cable once or twice, not sure though, maybe the problem was already present, I can't remember), and that when running the nvidia settings manager, I do not get the desired 1366X768 option. The best option is the 1024X768. Needless to say that my TV is widescreen. Ideas please...

Have you tried to extract the EDID info from the TV set manually ?
Check out: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=13706
Then you could load them via Xorg command,
nvidia proprietary drivers do have problems to get EDID data. nouveau drivers, for instance, is much better for this.
I had a similar problem with my screen, have a look at : https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nv … ly_display

  • V5-571G Bios, iGpu/Nvidia and bluetooth problem

I am Peter from The Netherlands.I own an Acer Aspire V5-571G 32364G32Makk for 2 years now.Last week I updated my BIOS from version 1.14 to 1.22 and I am very disappointed because: I can't choose anymore what to use, the iGPU or the Nvidia 620GT chip. Before the update it was possible to change. It is now disappeared from the BIOS!!!Next problem appeared to: my bluetooth is not working anymore!!! I tried to downgrade the BIOS to 1.14 back, but due the version chech it will not downgrade. Tried in Windows and DOS. I like to ask the Acer team: release a new BIOS where I can choose from for the iGPU or the Nvidia and that Bluetooth will work again. (Or tell me how to downgrade to 1.14 myself)I tried and read many sites on internet and no one could make me capable to do it (changing .ini files etc). Please help. Thank you!

    Bluetooth is working again

  • Xorg Nvidia and blender

Hi all, I'm having issues with my Nvidia 8400gs card on my up2date arch system. Im using Gnome 3.4 (fallback mode, ie not gnome-shell) and xorg-server 1.12.1-1
Using Nouveau drivers everything works like a charm except blender, which crashes from time to time.
I would love it if I could stick to nouveau! but from what I read its not recommended for intensive blender use
so im trying nvidia's closed drivers
    but...
Using the propietary nvidia driver (nvidia 295.49-1 and nvidia-beta 302.07-1) I can work flawlessly in blender, except that Blender freezes for a few seconds when closing it. Some times its a few seconds, and sometimes I have to reboot because it takes so long.
After the "freezing" i see this in Xorg.0.log:
    (EE) NVIDIA(0): Error recovery failed.
    (EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
this happens with both LTS kernel (linux-3.0.31-1-lts) and  linux-3.3.5-1
so, I've been trying the nvidia-275xxx driver but i see that not supported by Xorg anymore.

    any directions??

    Thanks for that!
OK, I've made some progress, or actually "regresions"
I've found this topic https://bbs.archlinux.org/post.php?tid=136030 where the workaround is downgrading to nvidia-285.xx
I had to try a couple of combinations and finally made nividia-285work,  sort of . The issue while closing blender seems to have gone, but I messed something with xorg or gnome since I'm getting an error in gdm login (i'm trying to find out the error) and the all windows decorations are gone. And had a complete crash once (reset button only option)
    will keep on searching...
    update:
    this combination seems to work!
    nvidia 285.05.09-3
    linux 3.1.9-2
    xorg-server 1.10.4-1
    xf86-input-evdev 2.6.0-3

  • Geforce 4 and monitor problem

Every time I install my new Geforce 4 detonator 30.82 drivers' it always shows two monitors on the settings page of my display properties. One is my monitor the other is called default. It also tries to show this default monitor in device manager until I delete it a couple of times but it always stays in the settings page.  Is this normal.

    Jake777,
That is because your Video Card is a Dual Dead card.  It says you have a Default monitor on the second head because you do not have a monitor and Win XP cannot detect it so it defaults to, you guessed it, Default.
You can try the latest Detonator 4 drivers from nVidia, I do not believe they will show the second monitor.
    Take Care,
    Richard

  • HP C410 and monitor problem when open online site.

When I open my HP C410 in the on line site, the color on my monitor gets funky and in turn the color on my home screen is also skewed.  This only happens when I bring up this software.  I've looked for places to change color and intensity within the program for the monitor, but don't see anything.  This distorts so much that I can't read the pages that I scan in.  This changed in the last couple months and is driving me nuts.

    Hello @Anita46,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you're experiencing issues when viewing your HP Photosmart Premium Fax e-All-in-One C410 Printer on the on line site on your Windows XP computer. I would like to assist you today with resolving this issue. However, I do need to clarify a few things before I am able to provide you with accurate troubleshooting.
    1. Are you able to Copy successfully?
If you're not sure,  please click here  for instructions on how to Copy. I would like you to perform a Colour Copy to see if the quality comes out distorted.
If your Colour Copy prints perfectly than can I have you elaborate on exactly what occurs when you scan a document into your computer?
    2. When your monitor appears distorted, I need you to elaborate on what you mean by it occuring on the Photosmart C410 site?
I need to confirm exactly what is occuring as a distorted monitor colours issues is significantly different than a Photosmart C410 scan issue. Once I confirm exactly what is occuring I will be able to guide you towards the correct resolution. I look forward to hearing from you!

  • Nvidia problems: Xorg flickering and restarts

    Hi,
after upgrading my laptop which has a nVidia Quadro FX1800 built-in (G94 / GT215GLM chipset I believe) I ran into problems over problems.
The latest nvidia drivers no longer support my card, so I installed the nvidia-340xx series packages (core driver, -libgl, -utils, lib32 variants).
After restarting I noticed the nvidia logo showing up 2 or 3 times, but then finally started up.
Everytime the screen changes I got a lot of flickering (screen going black for fractions of a second) and after a few seconds I was back at the nvidia logo - the X session just restarted.
My next attempt fixing this was going to linux-lts, which I installed together with nvidia-304xx-lts. After a reboot I thought that fixed the problem, but after half a minute I experienced the same bullsh** behaviour again.
The issue is extremely bad, starting xterm and running dmesg immediately leads to a Xorg restart, nautilus lives for about a minute, firefox won't even start.
    The machine is absolutely unusable.
The problem occurs with linux 3.17(.3) as well as 3.14(.25) lts.
The X logs don't show any errors/problems, but dmesg reveals something's definitely broken here:

lspci reveals that the PCI device at 0000:00:03.0 is the nvidia card.
What can I do to fix the problem?
Does anyone have experience with nouveau on a Quadro FX1800? What can I expect to work, what not and how's the performance?
I'm so glad I got a Haswell with Intel graphics for my Desktop right now...
I desperately hope anyone here can help me sort this out.

At the very beginning I thought it's just 340xx issue (there are already some threads here on forum or this on devtalk: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topi … x-ubunt/2/) but it's really strange you have problems with 304xx - according to 304 Supported Devices your FX1800 should be handled fine.this Supported Devices section.
After splitting to nvidia and nvidia-340xx I had to downgrade to nvidia-304xx - because of monitor detection issues I couldn't use version 340 (Quadro NVS 140M).
Some solution is available here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 7#p1478277

Hello, I have a Mac computer with NVIDIA 750M dedicated graphics card and monitor EIZO but the problem was there when I was working with Windows and Acer monitor. When I open a file from Camera Raw in PS this is smaller than the screen so I double-click with the tool "hand" to fit on the screen, but the picture loses sharpness and becomes blurry. If you magnify the image even only slightly with the tool "zoom" the picture comes back clear. In Camera Raw instead is always sharp. I solve the problem by turning off the graphics card in PS but often use plugin that need the graphics card otherwise the processing time is much longer. I ask for help.
    Thanks.

  • [SOLVED] nvidia and xorg-server, slow start compared to nv

I've seen many similar topics but none that have been solved, therefore the new topic.
Starting xorg with nv driver takes just a few seconds to desktop, while using nvidia takes almost 10 seconds more to get to desktop. Although after reaching desktop everything works fine. I've used a minimal xorg.conf for each driver (replacing nvidia with nv):
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    EndSection
    The /var/log/Xorg.0.log when using nvidia:

From what I can tell it is something with the nvidia driver that doesn't play well with xorg.  Perhaps some kind of autodetection that takes long time to finish. Anyone got any ideas how to solve this?

Didn't see they where timestamps . Yes it seems that glx is one cause of the delay. I've tried some different xorg.conf, and it's always ligglx.so or  NV-GLX that slows it down. Any suggestions on how I can speed this up?
ps. The computer is ok. Although the garddrive is a SATA 3.0Gb/s, 5400 RPM.  But I don't think this is the problem?

  • Xorg nvidia resolution problems with KDE

I just installed Arch 2008.04-RC last night.  I configured xorg.conf using nvidia with the screen resolution set to "1440x900" which worked in both the X Windows and KDE 3.5.9.
I was trying to get xine working with Amarok.  At one point, I deleted ~/.xine and xinirtc to force itself to reset. I then rebooted at which point I noticed the resolution set only at "640x400" in KDE.  I checked the Display Settings and that was the maximum resolution I could choose.  I then switched to the vesa drivers which allowed a maximum resolution of "1024x768".
I removed xorg and nvidia and reinstalled.  I can no longer get a resolution of "1440x900" resolution for my Viewsonic VA1926v flat screen monitor.  I read on the xorg log that
I am using the Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT video graphics card.  uname -r:  2.6.25-ARCH
From /var/log/Xorg.0.log I get the following information when I am using vesa:
    (II) VESA(0): Total Memory: 4096 64KB banks (262144kB)
(II) VESA(0): Generic Monitor: Using hsync range of 30.00-82.00 kHz

With nvidia, it just states that no mode is available for '1440x900' and selects virtual size of '640x400'.

I am at a loss at trying to fix this one.  Something similar happened when I was running Gentoo on this same desktop back in April.  I also have the same low resolution problem when using Sabayon.
Any help here would be much appreciated :-)

I thought these frequencies were a bit low too.  My manual said there were the frequencies.  I checked online and it said the same.  I need to do more research on it.
I did manage to get my 1440x900 resolution back using the open source nv drivers.  I had to do the same with Gentoo and Linux Mint in the past.  Everytime I used the nvidia drivers, my monitor returns to the 640x400 resolution and I noticed the only way to avoid it was to use nv.  I do not play games online or use Compiz so it does not bother me.
    Thanks.

  • Xorg/nvidia problems

    Hi
1.running archlinux for about 2 weeks, no problems, only some small ones solved with the wiki
2.new harddrive - ergo new installation
3.installation of the base system via ftp, the other parts too ( xorg, gnome, ... )
4.start of hwd -x -> cannot find xservers; ok on with xorg -configure
    5.manual configuration of xorg.conf -> monitor/nvidia
Finally startx, abort because missing 'nvidia' and 'glx' -> no problem ;-), manual copy in the right path; X starts and aborts because of missing mouse device ( mouse/keyboard driver is installed; mouse at auto ) ...
Btw. my mouse is a Razor Copperhead, no problem so far with xorg 6.8.2.
Read some threads, but to no avail or iam to dump to get it ...
Ok iam frustrated - is this some kind of beta test?
    Greetings Oliver

  • Problem with Wine, NVidia and fullscreen games

    Hi,
I'm writing about a problem i recently noticed with wine, nvidia gpu and fullscreen 2d games.Basically the problem is as follows - i am running arch with the latest kernel and nvidia drivers on Thinkpad T61 with NVidia Quadro NVS 140M. I have a problem with old 2d games like Red Alert 2, Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Diablo 2, Heroes 3. All of these games do not support the native 1440x900 resolution of my screen and all of them work fine in window mode but crash if fullscreen is selected. I managed to get some of them working by making them work at higher resolutions. For example although Red Alert 2 does not support 1440x900, it can be easily made to work at that resolution and after i applied the necessary settings it worked. The same was with Heroes 3 - by default it does not support 1440x900 and it used to work only i window mode but there is a HD mod which allows it to run in higher resolutions and after i applied it it worked perfectly in fullscreen. I haven't thested Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale but i think it will work there too.
The problem is that i cannot use this approach to all games - for example i must run Diablo 2 and Starcraft in their original resolutions. I read somewhere that the problem is that wine can only change between the resolutions described in the xorg.conf file and if doesn't find the necessary resolution the game will crash or will only take the portion of the screen that is its resolution - for example when i play Starcraft rather than stretching it to the whole screen it simply takes 640x480 pixels of my screen and the game is displayed in the top left corner of the screen leaving everything else black.
I didn't have this problem before - it is something new though i'm not sure since when do i have the problem because i rarely play games. As for the idea that the problem may be related to the resolutions defined in the Xorg.conf file, my xorg.conf is automatically generated by the nvidia installer and there are no resolutions defined there.

I remember that issue, with the 302 series.
I have Nvidia 304.48 installed and the problem still exists (it also happens with Catalyst). This didn't occur with 295.59 using the same version of Wine.

  • NVIDIA and external monitor

    W520, Windows 7 (64 bit), NVIDIA Quadro 1000M 2GB DDR3, purchased November 2011.
    Problems (related?):
-External monitor remains unrecognized when connected to W520.
-NVIDIA not recognized or working.   Maybe reason external monitor not recognized?
Tried to connect this computer to an HP2511x external monitor (via VGA direct to the computer or through docking station) but the monitor is not recognized.  Last made this connection about a year ago and it worked fine at that time: plugged the VGA cable into the W520 and the external monitor connected automatically, in duplicate mode.  The HP usually is connected to another computer and works fine, and the VGA cable was tested recently and is good. Tried the options at Fn/F7 and windows key/P:  the HP monitor remains black.
Studied the external monitor issue in forums and learned about the NVIDIA comments.   In follow up, I learned that the NVIDIA device is not listed in my Device Manager, under Display Adapters or elsewhere.  Right-clicking the desktop does no bring up the NVIDIA Control Panel.
When I do a search for the NVIDIA Control Panel, this message appears:
“NVIDIA display settings are not available.   You are not currently using a display attached to an NVIDIA  GPU.”  This appears whether VGA connected to the external monitor or not.
I attempted, several times, to download the NVIDIA driver from the NVIDIA site via auto detection.  The auto detect page instructed me to download Java, but Java is already loaded and current.  So I entered the NVIDIA info manually, which eventually lead to this message:
    “NVIDIA Installer failed”
HD Audio Driver – Not Installed
    NVIDIA WMI – Not Installed
    nView – Not Installed
    Graphics Driver – Failed
3D Vision Driver – Not Installed
So, I went to the Lenovo website and downloaded:
“NVIDIA Optimus Display Driver for Windows 7 (64-bit) - ThinkPad”
After a restart, right clicking the desktop still does not show the NVIDIA Control Panel.
    The Device Manager shows:
    -Intel(R) HD Graphic Family
    -Unknown device
I clicked on the Unknown device and read:
    -Device type: Display adapters
    Manufacturer: Unknown
Location: PCI bus 1, device 0, function 0
Device status: Reinstall the driver for this device. (Code 18)
Then I clicked the Reinstall Driver button, which lead to this message:
“Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device.  Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.  NVIDIA Quadro 1000M”
I went through the above processes several times to be certain that I did not miss something.
There is a GeForce shortcut on the desktop and when clicked, leads to this message:
“GeForce Experience encountered an error and must close.”
    Tried rebooting to BIOS:
    BIOS>Config>Display: the options are:
-Boot Display Device (ThinkPad LCD) default
    -Graphic Device (NVIDIA Optimus)
-OS Detection for NVIDIA Optimus (enabled)
Changed display to Graphic Device, tapped F10 to save and exit, then save, before computer goes into normal mode.
Try Fn/F7, duplicate, then extend, then projector and in all cases the HP monitor remains black, unrecognized.  Message on W520 screen:
“Unable to connect to a computer.
    No projector was detected.”
So, back to reboot> BIOS>Config>Display were I find that the setup reverted to the default.  Changed display to OS Detection for NVIDIA Optimus disabled.  Save, reboot, Fn/F7 and again no recognition of the HP monitor.  Reboot, BIOS etc, and the display option is back to the original default.
What do I need to do to get NVIDIA and the external monitor working on this W520?
    Thank you.

    Hi RR
    1. Ensure your BIOS is set to NVIDIA Optimus for multiple monitor connectivity.
    2. Download and update your Intel and NVIDIA driver from it's official website. Clicking Intel and NVIDIA will link directly to the download page for latest driver.
    3. If the 2 above succeed, but Fn+F7 still can't display your external monitor. Try right click Desktop > NVIDIA Control Panel > Display > Set up multiple displays. (The only workable method for W520 - Windows 8.1)

have a problem with my MacBook Pro.5,3 and monitor.  Intermittently, the desk top screen becomes broken up into vertical sections, which appear in the wrong order, creating a haphazard picture.
The Apple icon, usually at top left corner, appears in top right corner  in a strip including all that left hand.  When the computer is restarted, the screen goes back to normal.  But I have to move the mouse to the far left of the screen and then up until it reappears on the far right hand side of the screen so that I can hit shut down button.
It seems to happen randomly though always on desk top and sometimes when I move mouse and computer switches on from rest mode.   My large flat screen is relatively new.
The video card on this computer, which is approximately two years old, is Nvidia FeForce 9400M.
Any help would be welcome as my usual source of assistance is not available and I am not well versed in workings of the Mac although I have used one for many years.

That sounds like a Hardware problem.
You may be able to confirm that with Apple Hardware Test, or make an appointmenst for a free Genius Bar evaluation.

  • Massive artifacts, redraw and performance problems: xorg 1.8 and Intel

    Hi there.
Since the update to xorg-server 1.8 my intel GMA950 powered lap top is seriously acting up.
*Performance has dropped significantly, Games or compiz run slower than before
*Font drawing is sometimes garbled, sometimes not
*Some windows or parts of windows (sometimes only the decorations) show artifacts
*Drawing of fonts while typing is delayed by 1 or more characters sometimes
It might be related to this bug or the problem described in this thread.
    Just look at this screenshot:
I tired moving xorg.conf, I tried running compiz with --indirect-rendering, I tried all kinds of options in xorg.conf and all but it just remains broken like this. Has anyone got similar problems and a solution?

I've been having the same issue but not to the extent of the OP.
I read the man for intel
    man intel
and added these three lines to my xorg.conf
    Option "XvPreferOverlay" "false"
    Option "SwapbuffersWait" "false"
    Option "Tiling" "false" #{edit: after doing some testing I found tiling made no differnece so I ended up commenting it out}
The first option I added because the man says
    The  overlay
behaves  incorrectly  in  the  presence of compositing, but some
prefer it due to it syncing to vblank in  the  absence  of  com‐
                  positing
I use compiz ergo i have compositing and I noticed my video tearing and skipping sometimes. Seems to work fine now (more testing will be required)
The second option I added because the man says
Note that when enabled, this option can
adversely affect the framerate of applications that render
frames at less than refresh rate.
I have a hunch compiz probably isn't rendering at the refresh rate and also video would be rendered at less than my vert refresh of 60. So I disabled it.
The third and last option I added was because the man says
In most cases (especially for complex rendering),
    tiling dramatically improves performance.
    Well this may be a case where it doesn't and the posters above have noticed improvements.  {edit: after doing some testing I found this made no differnece so I ended up commenting it out}
In the end moving windows around the screen do not tear anymore and my video is smoother. I enabled all three at once so it maybe that one or a combination of 2 or possibly all 3 resulted in change. I suspect  I will do some more testing but hopefully this is a place to start fro some of you having this issue.
