Xorg Nvidia-Settings Esoterica

I see posts with odd Xorg and nvidia-settings like AddARGBGLXVisuals, RenderAccel, BoolVoodoBlackMagicMojo whatever.
Where do people find these settings and what they mean? I have never been able to find a resorce that tells you what all the possible settings are and what they do. Is there one?

  • [SOLVED] Getting Xorg + nVidia, on a new install, working

    Hi there,
Lately, I've been trying something new: running with a modern GPU. *gasp!* ...but I've been running into some trouble. I'm hoping someone can help or at least point me in the right direction.
    The situation:
I recently put Arch on a new machine of mine. It has an nVidia card (a 560 Ti) on a Gigabyte mobo and I'm trying to get X running on it.
Whenever I try starting X (be it with Startx or GDM), it complains it can't find a screen. It wasn't detecting the nvidia driver on it's own so I tried a minimal xorg.conf to help things along. It's not complaining about not finding drivers anymore (which is a plus), but X is still, as mentioned, failing to start.
I understand that nvidia-xconfig is supposed to be an out dated tool, so I've avoided using it so far. Nvidia-settings takes an X environment to work, so I can't use that either. I thought that might mean I need to get X working before I can try configuring it, so I tried getting X working with one of the generic drivers via the mobo's integrated card, but vesa just freezes the server on me and the Intel driver's dependencies conflict with nvidia.
None of the logs seemed toto give any clues. They are pretty much the same as the stdout for Xorg, lol. I'll try posting logs as needed...all logs will be at the end of this post.
The wiki touches on the install a bit, but than goes into tweeking and other tips for a working setup. It may be that I just don't know which key phrases I should be googling, but searches aren't turning up much more.
    Suggestions?

Gusar wrote:Error reports can all be put into files (or are files already), which you can copy to an usb stick and then get them to a machine with working graphics, so no need for transcribing anything. For starters we need /var/log/Xorg.0.log after X failed to start and the output of dmesg. For dmesg you can do a simple redirection "dmesg > file.txt".
Well, woops! I was way too damn tired by the time I said that. Good thing I stop working on my machine when I did, who knows what I would've broken! ...lol. My logs have been included in the end of my orriginal post.

  • Nvidia-settings in a separate X session

This may be a quick, bone-basic question but I find that my nvidia-settings such as anti aliasing are not working in a separate xsession.
here is my little script for my game
    X :3 -ac -terminate &
    sleep 2
    export WINEPREFIX=${HOME}/.local/share/wineprefixes/OpenBVE
    export WINEARCH=win32
    export DISPLAY=:3
    cd "${WINEPREFIX}/drive_c/Program Files/openbve [1.2.14.0]"
    wine OpenBve.exe
Can any one tell me the steps to get em working?
    THANKS

    hi,
    thanks for the reply.
I got the following error when I ran the script with nvidia-settings added

  • Set nvidia-settings on start-up

Where is the best place on an arch box to set the
    nvidia-settings -a InitialPixmapPlacement=2 -a GlyphCache=1
    ~/.xinitrc?

.xinitrc is good, or you can add something like this to your xorg.conf:
    Section "Device"
    Option "InitialPixmapPlacement" "2"
    Option "GlyphCache" "1"
    EndSection "Device"

  • Using nvidia-settings without X/over ssh

I have a computer with an nvidia GTX 670 that I want to control remotely. However, I have problems using nvidia-settings over ssh. When trying to use it, I get this error:
    ERROR: Cannot open display ':0.0'.
When a user is logged in an xfce session locally, I can use nvidia-settings without issue, using the command line over ssh. As soon as I log out from the xfce session, I get
    Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
    ERROR: Cannot open display ':0.0'.
ERROR: Unable to query attribute GPUCoreTemp specified in query '[gpu:0]/GPUCoreTemp' (no Display connection).
How can I use nvidia-settings without the need for a user to be logged in locally?

I am trying to do the same thing with a GT 240. I found something promising here:
    https://sites.google.com/site/akohlmey/ … s-X-Server
Since you do have a local monitor, it may be easier not having to fake one. I don't have a monitor, I haven't gotten around to trying the Xorg stuff yet.

  • Video playback freezes Xorg nvidia-340xx (340.46-4)

    Hi all,
I recently updated by MacBook Pro (4,1) to the new legacy nvidia drivers because 343 doesn't support the integrated 8600M. I'm currently running 3.17.1-1, but I also had the problem on 3.16.4-1.
When I'm watching video in VLC X will freeze. The mouse pointer still works, but I can't click on anything, and everything besides the cursor stops updating. The only solution is to switch to tty and restart the login manager (slim, in my case). If you switch to tty and then back to X, the screen is black except for the cursor.
I'm running Enlightenment without compiz, using opengl as the render engine.
dmesg doesn't have anything from the kernel or the module about errors, oops, crashes, whatever. /var/log/Xorg.0.log also has nothing to indicate that something is happening.
I've tried to follow the instructions on NVidia's website to generate verbose VDPAU logs, but it would appear that doesn't work with VLC. I installed mplayer to try and get it to crash, but when I specify vdpau as the video output module there is no video displayed, so I'm guessing NVidia's instructions (which date from 2012) are outdated and no longer apply. Interestingly watching videos in Chrome (mp4 or webm) doesn't seem to crash X.
Anyone else having issues with video playback on the new 340xx drivers? This is really, really annoying, and I'm going to have to downgrade or switch to nouveau if the situation doesn't improve. Having X hard lock on me while watching video is not something I can live with.

The problem appears to be a memory leak in the NVidia driver. nvidia-settings shows that 99% of dedicated VRAM is used (254 of 256MB) while only running a few 2D applications. Disabling opengl rendering in enlightenment helps somewhat (83% VRAM used) but it's still a major regression from previous driver versions (<340.46) where the average used VRAM was ~40% while running productivity applications.
Has anyone else had issues with older GPUs an VRAM management on the 340.46 release?

  • Make Nvidia-Settings monitor settings & PowerMizer stick

If i access the Nvidia-Settings program, i can configure the OpenGL and Antialiasing Settings however i wish and quit and they will permanently stick through every restart of the computer or x server.
However the "X Server Display Configuration" settings and "PowerMizer" settings, although they do apply for my current session after i change them, restarting X11 will reset them.
I want to set my two displays to clone and powermizer to performance mode.
I have both tried the "Save to X Configuration File" button in the display section and saved it to a file in xorg.conf.d/ and i also tried going to the nvidia-settings Configuration and using the "Save Current Configuration" on the default path/filename for my user (rather than root(
Nothing i've tried seems to work. What am i doing wrong or just not doing?
My window manager is a plain openbox-session.

    nvidia-settings -l
seems to do precisely nothing, and to my understanding when the drivers load (when X runs) the drivers should load the "~/.nvidia-settings-rc" which is created when i use the "Save Current Configuration" button if one exists (if not i assume it just uses some default settings). Also to my understanding "nvidia-settings -l" is just meant to load exactly that file again.
whether it actually does that successfully or not i have not tested, but the file does not include the monitor settings when i save it and i assume it doesn't contain the PowerMizer settings either since that also doesn't stick.
i seem to require a xorg.conf or a xorg.conf.d/file file with at leastthese contents to run X with the nvidia drivers. Last i checked anyways which was probably a few months back.

  • Nvidia-settings segmentation fault

I have nvidia 270.41.06-1 installed. And when I try to run nvidia-settings it gives me segmentation fault.
Anyone else experience this problem? I think it started happening to me only on very recent update.
PS. I am using KDE 64-bit
Last edited by kdar (2011-04-21 06:18:48)

I am on x86_64 also, XFCE4, and it segfaults on me too, here is the log (found in the kernel.log):
It segfaults only when trying to SAVE TO X CONFIGURATION FILE (xorg.conf) (and does not update xorg.conf)
    nvidia-settings[1617]: segfault at 7f32b3a09ae0 ip 00007f32b3a09ae0 sp 00007fffca33e0b8 error 15
UPDATE: when I delete the ~/.nvidia-settings.rc  file (in all my user's directories, including the root directory)
I can then SAVE the CONFIGURATION (as root).  I just made sure aftewards, to save the new ~/.nvidia-settings.rc
too. (to all my user's directories).
I didn't have to change themes, or anything else.  Just delete the old ~/.nvidia-settings.rc file from each user,
including root, then issue # sudo nvidia-setttings and save the X configurations to file.  It worked.. then
saved the settings to each user's directory (~/.nvidia-settings-rc)

  • Xorg, Nvidia and Monitor problem

It all started when I saw a strange startup problem (lower resolution than my usual 1366X768) and some startup messages, on my system (Pcc tower plus a Sony Bravia 32' TV, that I use as a monitor. I started this thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=105910 but soon realised my problem was elsewhere. Reviewing the xorg log I see that xorg is unable to read EDID from the monitor and falls to auto-selection of resolution resulting to a 1024X768 (further on DPI calculation is also affected). So, has anyone had the same problem or has any idea?
I should mention that I use a VGA cable (there is a possibility that I messed things up when I tried an HDMI cable once or twice, not sure though, maybe the problem was already present, I can't remember), and that when running the nvidia settings manager, I do not get the desired 1366X768 option. The best option is the 1024X768. Needless to say that my TV is widescreen. Ideas please...

    Check out: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=13706
Then you could load them via Xorg command,
nvidia proprietary drivers do have problems to get EDID data. nouveau drivers, for instance, is much better for this.
    I had a similar problem with my screen, have a look at : https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nv … ly_display

Attribute 'GPUOverclockingState' (arch-macbookpro:0[gpu:0]) assigned value 1.
    Attribute 'GPU3DClockFreqs' (arch-macbookpro:0[gpu:0]) assigned value 550,1200.
When I then check the settings I see default values again, and not the ones I set:
    $ nvidia-settings -q all | grep GPU3D
    Attribute 'GPU3DClockFreqs' (arch-macbookpro:0.0): 450,1064.
    The valid values for 'GPU3DClockFreqs' are in the ranges 112 - 900, 266 - 1276 (inclusive).
'GPU3DClockFreqs' can use the following target types: X Screen, GPU.

Are there any other ways to try?

Did you activate coolbits in xorg.conf (or 20-nvidia.conf)? Even so, from what I know, overclocking isn't supported on mobile cards.

What DE are you using? (if any) I have a similar problem since the last Gnome 3.12, doesn't matter where I put the command "nvidia-settings --load-config-only" it just doesn't work. I have to either open the GUI or issue the command on the terminal for it to happen, I tried with ~/.config/autostart/ /etc/xdg/autostart/ with a .xprofile file, a .xinitrc, nothing works, I can't tell from where this problem originates. Other programs start just fine with the mentioned methods, then it must be something wrong with the way nvidia is invoked I guessing, a couple of months ago was working flawlessly.

  • Command line nvidia-settings output.

First off, I'm not sure if this thread should be here or in the hardware section, but since the issue is with the software, i've stuck it here for the moment.
Since nvclock doesn't work with my fermi cards (2 x gtx470s in sli) I'm using the cli of nvidia-settings in a munin plugin. After some faffing around getting the env set correctly and sufficient xhost permissions, everything is working, apart from the clock speeds.
    nvidia-settings -tq [gpu:0]/gpucurrentclockfreqsstring
should output the current clock frequencies of the gpu. However, all it displays is the lowest frequencies - for me, the output is always
    nvclock=50, memclock=135, processorclock=101
even when the card is loaded (unigine benchmark) and the nvidia-settings gui shows the correct (higher) clocks. gpucurrentperflevel does change, so this is what I'm using at the moment, although I would prefer actual clock readings rather than 0-3.
Is this experienced by anyone else with nvidia (fermi or not) cards? And should I file a bug for arch, or upstream?
    Thanks

    Thanks Both...
Psychomania, I do remember one of the Nokia updates having a problem when I initially started to play with the phone.  I've just gone through all the QR codes above and got the attached message for 'Display and Touch'.
This was exactly the problem I had initially and looks like the cause or the error in my settings.
FYI.  I am updating over my home wi-fi, so there shouldn't be any connection issues.

  • [SOLVED] nvidia-settings startup delay

Does anyone happen to know why nvidia-settings takes a good 3-4 minutes to open after open it from the menu or the terminal, sudo or as user? I'm on xfce and didn't have this problem on Cinnamon or Ubuntu Gnome-Shell.
I have to use this settings panel to turn "on" my secondary display when I plug it up also for some reason, this is new too, but I suppose not relevant to the original question. Bonus points if you know why this is too!

Actually, chalk this up to not looking hard enough again. The suggestion to add
    127.0.0.1 myhostname
to /etc/hosts seems to have solved the issue.

  • Nvidia settings not saves and applied on setup

I have this problem using nvidia settings for the nvidia driver 295.33-1.  I am trying to tweak gamma levels and varius otehr settings using nvidia control panel.  I save the settings in .nvidia-settings-rc in my home folder, but when I log out the settings are restored to their defaults.
I the following bash script to load the nvidia settings.
    #!/bin/bash
    nvidia-settings --load-config-only
    nvidia-settings -a InitialPixmapPlacement=2
However the only way now to apply my selected settings is to open nvidia control center every time I log in.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Run as root?? That's obviously not what's intended - it's saved in $HOME.
How can you expect the setting to take effect, when it's not even present? I see no "pix"-related line in ~/.nvidia-settings-rc . You could ask for it to be included, in the nvidia forum.
Running "nvidia-settings --load-config-only" changes the settings for that session only, that's correct. What's the problem with that?
