Xorg/nvidia tweaks for KDE 4.1

This is how my device section looks like. Anything else that I might add for better nvidia/xorg performance? Or anything bad I have that could possibly cripple performance? Please suggest.

Hmm. Perhaps updating to the newest beta drivers will help?

  • [SOLVED] Getting Xorg + nVidia, on a new install, working

    Hi there,
Lately, I've been trying something new: running with a modern GPU. *gasp!* ...but I've been running into some trouble. I'm hoping someone can help or at least point me in the right direction.
    The situation:
I recently put Arch on a new machine of mine. It has an nVidia card (a 560 Ti) on a Gigabyte mobo and I'm trying to get X running on it.
Whenever I try starting X (be it with Startx or GDM), it complains it can't find a screen. It wasn't detecting the nvidia driver on it's own so I tried a minimal xorg.conf to help things along. It's not complaining about not finding drivers anymore (which is a plus), but X is still, as mentioned, failing to start.
I understand that nvidia-xconfig is supposed to be an out dated tool, so I've avoided using it so far. Nvidia-settings takes an X environment to work, so I can't use that either. I thought that might mean I need to get X working before I can try configuring it, so I tried getting X working with one of the generic drivers via the mobo's integrated card, but vesa just freezes the server on me and the Intel driver's dependencies conflict with nvidia.
None of the logs seemed toto give any clues. They are pretty much the same as the stdout for Xorg, lol. I'll try posting logs as needed...all logs will be at the end of this post.
The wiki touches on the install a bit, but than goes into tweeking and other tips for a working setup. It may be that I just don't know which key phrases I should be googling, but searches aren't turning up much more.
    Suggestions?

Gusar wrote:Error reports can all be put into files (or are files already), which you can copy to an usb stick and then get them to a machine with working graphics, so no need for transcribing anything. For starters we need /var/log/Xorg.0.log after X failed to start and the output of dmesg. For dmesg you can do a simple redirection "dmesg > file.txt".
Well, woops! I was way too damn tired by the time I said that. Good thing I stop working on my machine when I did, who knows what I would've broken! ...lol. My logs have been included in the end of my orriginal post.

  • Intel/nVidia troubles for Razer Blade 14

Hi, I've been trying to setup the switchable graphics for the Razer Blade 14 (nVidia 765M) but no luck. I've been reading several posts but still no dice.
I'm using nvidia, bbswitch, linux-ck and bumblebee.
nvidia-config was saved at /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf and changed
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "nvidiagpu1"
    Driver "nvidia"
    BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
    EndSection
bumblebee.conf I set Driver=nvidia and Bridge=virtualgl and I set BusID to 01:00:00. It shows (rev ff) before optirun and rev (a1) after running optirun.

Don't mean to bump but perhaps I'm on the wrong subforum? Should I copy this on newbie corner?

  • Video playback freezes Xorg nvidia-340xx (340.46-4)

    Hi all,
I recently updated by MacBook Pro (4,1) to the new legacy nvidia drivers because 343 doesn't support the integrated 8600M. I'm currently running 3.17.1-1, but I also had the problem on 3.16.4-1.
When I'm watching video in VLC X will freeze. The mouse pointer still works, but I can't click on anything, and everything besides the cursor stops updating. The only solution is to switch to tty and restart the login manager (slim, in my case). If you switch to tty and then back to X, the screen is black except for the cursor.
I'm running Enlightenment without compiz, using opengl as the render engine.
dmesg doesn't have anything from the kernel or the module about errors, oops, crashes, whatever. /var/log/Xorg.0.log also has nothing to indicate that something is happening.
I've tried to follow the instructions on NVidia's website to generate verbose VDPAU logs, but it would appear that doesn't work with VLC. I installed mplayer to try and get it to crash, but when I specify vdpau as the video output module there is no video displayed, so I'm guessing NVidia's instructions (which date from 2012) are outdated and no longer apply. Interestingly watching videos in Chrome (mp4 or webm) doesn't seem to crash X.
Anyone else having issues with video playback on the new 340xx drivers? This is really, really annoying, and I'm going to have to downgrade or switch to nouveau if the situation doesn't improve. Having X hard lock on me while watching video is not something I can live with.

The problem appears to be a memory leak in the NVidia driver. nvidia-settings shows that 99% of dedicated VRAM is used (254 of 256MB) while only running a few 2D applications. Disabling opengl rendering in enlightenment helps somewhat (83% VRAM used) but it's still a major regression from previous driver versions (<340.46) where the average used VRAM was ~40% while running productivity applications.
Has anyone else had issues with older GPUs an VRAM management on the 340.46 release?

  • CUDA support of nVidia drivers for T61

May be a redundant question, but does the nvidia drivers for T61 available on Lenovo's website contain CUDA support (I know from nVidia's website that nvidia Quadro NVS140M is a CUDA-enabled product)? Just wondering before I go ahead and install the drivers, toolkit and SDK for CUDA on the computer.

The drivers from Microsoft support CUDA and all features of the 570m on Windows 7.  I have not tried installing them on Vista, but it should work there too.
No hack or tweaks required.  Just download, install, and CUDA works right out of the box.  This also boosted my "Experience Index Score" by a few points on Windows 7.
Get them here.  You must use IE to access this site.
    http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=nvidia+570m
Try on Vista and let us know.

  • Is arch tweaked for KDE3.5?

    Hi
Just wondering if arch is tweaked for KDE3.5.
I've tried many distros: *buntu, SuSE, RH, FC, Zenwalk, Vector, Saby, Mandrake, Mint, Gentoo, PClos, Debian, Mepis, Knoppix and DSL.
On all of them, GNOME 2.22 was more responsive than KDE3.5 - that is my experience.
However, Arch KDE3.5 is more responsive than GNOME2.2 on arch.
Thus, begs the question - has something been done to make KDE3.5 harmonise with Arch?
    Just wondering.
And when I say responsive, I refer to the overall desktop experience .. opening apps, windows, point-n-click . I do not refer to questionable benchmarks that standalone outside of the desktop experience, such as hdparm, and the other "benchmarking tools". My experience could be "subjective" nevertheless, it is my experience.

Strange... the Ubuntu guys normally say that KDE is much faster for them...

  • GE70-2OE -- Issues + Tweaks for n00bs

    All,
I just got my GE70-2OE with a GTX 765m for gaming on the road
I have been tweaking it and have the following questions:
1 - I immediately reinstalled Windows 7. I don't care what ANYONE says, Windows 8 is horrid. I tried to give it a chance but between all the bloatware and other interface issues, I just don't care for it. Are many users here running Windows 7 instead of 8 on their gaming notebook?
2 - Overall gaming performance is pretty nice at 1080p but this graphics card seems more geared towards a 1600x900 resolution. My biggest issue is, some games, like Grim Dawn, seem to be defaulting to the Intel Video instead of the NVIDIA. I am only getting like 10-15 FPS in that game where I get 120+ on my desktop NVIDIA card. Other games, it goes to the NVIDIA and performance is fine. Any tips? Is there a way to specify Integrated or discrete video? (PS - I am plugged into power)
3 - On the sound card, it's a Realtek sound card but the Sound Blaster Cinema software works with it -- Am I missing something?
4 - What does the unlocked GE70 BIOS allow you to do exactly?
5 - Any other tips, tweaks or tweaks for advanced users for this model?
    Thanks in advance!

Quote from: digitalforceq on 09-March-14, 00:40:50
Found my issue on Grim Dawn. I had to hard set the GPU in the NVIDIA control panel. Works fine now
I am still curious on a custom BIOS, etc. Also, how do I toggle the keyboard backlight on this model?
Talk to Svet/post in the custom bios sub-forum here. It will require a donation for Svet's time, but he can do it.
I'm not sure that all the GE70 models came with a backlit keyboard.
Does the backlight come on when you first power the notebook on? If it doesn't it probably didn't come with the  backlit keyboard.

    Hi.
To fix this problem i've to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file and add to kernel line  vmalloc=192M option.
More information here: http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L … ssues.html at Kernel virtual address space exhaustion on the X86 platform section.
I hope this can help someone

  • Is it possible to use the Intel graphics for the display and use the NVIDIA GPU for rendering at the same time?

I have been trying to figure this one out for a couple of days. I found the CUDA mac drivers on NVIDIA's website and installed them. I have been working in Blender. After the driver install I can now switch between CPU and GPU processing, Great. It works, but I am not experiencing decreased render times like I had read about or expected. It's about the same. While using the GPU for rendering, my OS is choppy, leading me to wonder if there is a way to use the NVIDIA just for computing power?
    Any help would be grand.
    Thanks

    No.

  • NVidia Drivers for F10-100

Can anyone tell me if its possible to update the nvidia drivers for the above model beyond that which is currently listed in the toshiba updates section. Those drivers are quite old now, and I tried downloading the MCE specific drivers from nvidia, but just got a stop notice saying the product was not supported.
Can they be updated at all?
I even tried the XP Pro drivers to no avail.

You can have a look at this page:
    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/
But if you decide to install one of these drivers, you'll have to do it at your own risks. I have personnaly installed version 77.72 on my Qosmio G20-107 and it's working great ! Here are the benchs i have before/after installing them:

That's... what the tweaker is for.
I don't like the Metro interface either. All I really want is to see the return of the classic Explorer status bar.

  • Question about building QT for KDE

I'd like to build my own version of QT for KDE, and I noticed that the PKGBUILD in ABS checks out kde-qt git, creates a patch from 4.5.3 to 4.5.3-patched, then applies that patch to qt-4.5.3.  Is there some reason this is done instead of just building kde-qt 4.5.3-patched directly?  It seems to me it's the exact same thing.

Nevermind, I figured it out.  Yes, it is the same thing, though it turns out I don't actually need to build qt anyway...

  • Latest Nvidia Driver for G560 does not install!

    Hi,
i've tried to install the latest nvidia driver for my G560. But it seems like the only driver working on this system is the preinstalled driver from Lenovo.
I always get the message that the driver can't find the required hardware. I've downloaded the correct (Win 7 64 Bit) and latest driver from Nvidias webpage. I've even tried some older drivers from the drivers archive.
Does anybody have a clue how I can solve my problem?
    Greetings Cpk83
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

It does look like the correct driver. But I noticed this "Note: The following notebooks are not supported in this release: 1. Notebooks supporting Hybrid Power with Intel chipsets. 2. Fujitsu notebooks – support will be added in a later release. Fujitsu Siemens (FSC) notebooks are supported in this release. 3. Sony VAIO notebooks – support will be added in a later release. Sony VAIO Windows 7 users can click here for driver update support. 4. Any notebook that is launched after the release date of this driver. " Does anyone know if this laptop has Hybrid Power? Also here is a good tip/recommended from ATI. "Advisory: The display driver supplied by the laptop manufacturer is customized for the built-in flat panel display, and the graphics features and functions specific to the laptop. It is strongly recommended to use the supplied drivers. If installing a different operating system other than the one included with the laptop, the laptop may not meet all the requirements, and supported drivers may not be available. The laptop manufacturer is the exclusive provider of driver updates. If the required driver update is not available at the laptop manufacturers’ website, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer directly, to see if an updated driver will be made available in the future."
