Xorg server high cpu utlilization and erratic behaviour (xorg 1.16)

Hello arch users,
I have been using arch for more than two years, and apart from a few hiccups it has been great.
This is one such hiccup...
My problem:
I did a pacman -Suy yesterday, tend to do this often only 5-10 packages were upgraded, one of them being xorg.
Today i opened my pc, and logged in as usual(i am using slim).
When i started opening my usual applications (firefox, thunderbird) i noticed the following:
When ever i clicked a button(eg. close a tab) CPU utilization would go to 100% for the xorg processes as-well as the wm process (openbox in my case).
After a while(5s) CPU utilization drops to normal, but the event is usually ignored...
I have an strace, that shows the system calls when this happens but i don't think it is very useful,i will post it if it helps.
Has anyone faces the same issue, any clues?

This is the pacman log:

  • High CPU utlilization and re-encoding

I created my imovie project and exported to media browser.
Then i open this and create my dvd in iDvd. I choose Burn DVD. When its rendering the movie( 2 hours time length), it causes my CPU to spike at well over 100% for the entire time. It tool over 3.5 hours to create the DVD.
    Is this normal?
Also, why does it have to go through this process if i exit idvd and just want to burn another disc again? Is my workflow wrong?

You can copy the finished iDvd with apple's disc utility or Toast.
You can make a disc image to the desktop and make copies thereafter in about 30 mins. or less.
Or .... Simply don't quit iDvd and when prompted for additional copies (after the first one is burned) iDvd will ask you via a dialog box if you wish to make another copy .... just keep going but allow the burner to cool for 20 mins. in between copies to avoid read / write errors.

  • High CPU load and com.apple.ImageCaptureExtension2 crash after upgrade

After upgrading my Macbook Air from Lion to Mountain Lion, the system has a very high cpu load, and the crash reporter is the process that causes thee high load. In the error log I see this entry several times per second:

I investigated a bit more and recovered, that it has something to do with the printer drivers. When I remove all printers from setting, everything is fine. As soon as I add a printer (Brother MFC 9440CN printer/scanner, printer driver provided by Mountan Lion), the crash reporter starts it's work and the error log is full of those entries.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Marcus

I did more exploration and found the cause of this, but I don't know how to fix it:
I removed all Brother and Lexmark printer drivers and rebooted (and also tested with a virtual machine using 10.8.0 as guest os that never had any printer installed). As soon as I enter the printer settings and press the "+", the crashes begin, so it looked like the bonjour one of the printers announcing themselves via Bonjour were causing this.
When watching a picture in the preview app the same happend. We have two multi function printers in our network, the already mentioned brother printer and a Lexmark X204N. Switching off the Lexmark (which wasn't installed on my Mac) solved the problem. Switching off the printer is no solution in our office (it's our fax device and main printer), but switching off mDNS on the Lexmark also solved it. But this can only be a workaround.
Is this a known problem with Lexmark devices and Mountain Lion (it works fine with machines using Lion)? Are there any fixes known? It's just the Lexmark device announing itself via Bonjour that causes trouble, even if the driver is not installed.

  • Permanent high CPU load and timeouts in communication channels

    Dear Colleagues,
we've a strange issue since last week. At first we had an problem with a redirect to the cytrix online booking engine within the travel management application of our SAP NW Portal. There is a redirect.jsp file deployed in our PI system that connects to cytrix and passes the URL with session link and session cookie to our Portal. We fixed that issue by restarting the PI system.
    We have a PI 7.0 stack 23 on HP-UX.
After restarting we found that we've got a very high CPU load (about 75% overall CPU, or 300% at 4 CPUs) probably caused by very frequent (3 per second) minor garbage collection runs (as seen in GC.log).
On friday we had timeouts within one of our communication channels in the PI system.
We changed the heap size from 2GB to 3GB and the new generation from 341MB to 768MB and restarted the PI system. But after a few ours the system uses 75% RAM of the CPU high CPU load and the GC runs are still the same.

Does anyone know what can cause the high load?
Is the frequency of the GC runs normal?
Can the timeouts be connected to the high CPU load?
The error ony occurs on our productive system.
I'd appriciate your help very much.
    Kind regards,
    Paul

    hi Paul,
I believe an issue like that needs to be done onsite and not via a forum
as it probably requires doing lots of checks/tests
my suggestion would be to get a PI consultant expert with basis experience onsite or do it via OSS with SAP

  • IcedTea High CPU usage and multiple jobs created

High CPU usage and multiple jobs created while streaming data via a java applet from a secure/certified website.  CPU usage is normal for a few minutes then suddenly jobs multiply and CPU usage climbs on one of the jobs.

Here is a good tutorial on Java.  Evidently, what I called "jobs" is referred to as processes and threads in this tutorial.  The tutorial states that multithreaded execution is an essential feature of the Java platform which explains the avalanche of threads I observe.  However, I am still stumped at what causes the avalanche of threads and excessive CPU consumption for such a mediocre task.  Also the system log says that IcedTea has an error stating "Application title was not found in manifest. Check with application vendor".   I interpret this to mean that IcedTea does not recognized some application.  What application?  .....the applet?

  • Disco App Server high CPU usage, Disco Applet freezes, tuning possible?

    Hi again,
so I am facing again a dramatic performance issue with our Discoverer.
I have a cross-table report with ten page items, one datapoint, a percentage calculation and a total.
After querying the data from the DB, building the report (calculating total and percentages) takes 50 seconds, Disco Applet is freezed, App Server shows high CPU load (one core about 60%, other three cores about 20%). The report fetches 5600 rows, which is quite nothing.
    Disco Version: 10.1.2.54.25 (CPU IV).
Are there any parameters / settings on the application server to improve the performance at this place?
    Thanks in advance,
    Christian

I found the solution for this special problem: the total in the report was the cause. Without it, the report reacts as I expect it.
Nevertheless, other reports (approx. 300.000 rows of data in a crosstab) with four page items also cause this high CPU load on the AS and freeze Disco for some half a minute. Our costumers do complain about this as it always seems that Disco hung up.
Any suggestions on how to tune the AS?
    Regards,
    Christian

  • Microsoft Office 2004 -- extremely high cpu usage and virtual ram

    hi,
when i use office it causes a very high cpu usage even when its in idle mode.
i am unable to work with it, because its extremely slow.
    does anyone have same experiences?
    thanks for your help!
    mbp 2.0 1,5gb ram 80gb hdd   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I am able to work OK with office, I'm using the 'old version' Microsoft Office v.X, not much details in the About Box, just listed as MSoft Word/Excel/etc for Mac service release 1.
I get the occasional crash, and I have seen Word in particular use 90% of a single core and amazingly large virtual memory usage, gigabytes sometimes, but eventually the document gets printed.
It shows how useful the dual core (or quad) cpu approach is!
One cpu for Word to print, and one cpu to run the rest of my applications/life!
I still use this old office rather than re-booting into Window§ for whatever is the latest version of office.
Doing some playing with a similar one page document in Office v.X and Pages 2.01, I get Word using about 25% of a core , Pages using 5%, - whilst editing; Intel native Pages has 20% of a core and 80MB ram 480 virtual whilst printing, Word has about 100% of a core and 65MB ram 650 virtual whilst printing, but it is a powerPC code so Rosetta is in there somewhere.
check Activity Monitor or other apps/widgets for some parasitic processes? have fun!
many Macs 512k -> MacBool Pro 2GHz 1GB ram   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Yes, I have Key Lime

  • High cpu impact and many Java exceptions

    Hi,
Our development portal is behaving strangely. It's running at normal speed, but with a much higher CPU usage than  normal. A quick trace showed that the log-files is filling up fast with the following error message:
System.err sap.com/irj Guest 19 #SAPEngine_Application_Thread[impl:3]_7##0#0#Error##Plain###com.sap.engine.services.httpserver.exceptions.HttpIOException: Read timeout. The client has disconnected or a synchronization error has occurred. Read 15205812 bytes. Expected 45455962.
I have no idea what causes this error, or for how long it has been a problem.
Any clues on what component may be failing, and how to debug and solve this so the development portal can return to a normal state?
    Thanks in advance guys,

  • Browser's javascript engine causing high CPU load and lost swipe events

I'm having performance issues on some websites. I think that my the javascript engine in the Playbook's javascript engine is causing high CPU usage, which means the device misses swipe gestures.
    Visit: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-15814035
Once the page is loaded swipe to scroll up and down. On my device (and my friend's) it is incredibly slow. Sometimes it refuses to register any swipe events.
Now turn off javascript and reload the page. Swipe to scroll up and down. Smooth as silk!
My device is a new 16Gb with version 1.0.7.3312. Thanks

I'm having the same problem on a number of websites with my 32gb Playbook. On the same sites that I notice slow, sometimes barely responsive swipes for scrolling my wife's iPad 2 handles them with ease. Disabling javascript fixes the problem however a lot of websites including gmail requires javascript to be enabled on your browser to load. I notice the problem quite a bit when using webmail to check my gmail account which is rather frustrating because it is my only option until PB gets a native email client. My PB is running software 1.0.8.4295, but the problem was also occurring when it was running 1.0.7.

  • Syslogd makes high CPU Load and standby mode doesn´t work.

After updating to Leopard I see high CPU Load caused by syslogd daemon(40%-80%) and my MacBook has problems with standby mode. After stopping the white LED lights and CPU fan speeds up. Is there any chance to fix these problems?

OK.. here's where I'm at with troubleshooting this. As I said before, for ME it occurred simultaneous to a low or out of memory situation. I don't know if syslogd was using my the ram, or if the low ram was a symptom of an issue that syslogd was getting caught up in reporting... but the system log file had tens of THOUSANDS of out of memory errors listed. Almost all were from dashboard.
So... I've done the following. In dashboard I closed ALL open widgets. I disabled spaces (since in another thread someone indicated it used a lot of memory). I ran Leopard Cache Cleaner and used it to perform maintenances, run the os scripts and rebuild caches and so on. Rebooted.
Now its working fine! Since then its been over 24 hrs and I STILL have over 300megs of ram reported free on a 1 gig system. I've used everything else like normal (safari, mail, ichat, itunes, etc..). Where the problem used to happen after a couple of hours after a reboot every time, now it seems normal. No out of mem, and syslogd is running normally (apparently).
I will run a few apps that I havent run in a while and see if those create an issue. If not, later today I will enable spaces and see how that does after a few hours. Finally I'll add in the dashboard widgets one at a time to see if the issue lies there. I'll report back here if I discover anything.

  • High CPU Usage and Temperature

I've recently purchased a MacBook with the latest updates, including the firmware for the random shutdowns but lately when I boot the MacBook up, the fans kick on and it reads 83 degrees Celsius with about 65% CPU Usage and I don't have anything running except what came on the MacBook in itself, any suggestions?? Apple told me to take it in to have it looked at but I was wondering if there is anything I can fix perhaps?? Thank you

Sometimes when I connect an external drive which I have made drastic file changes to, there are two process that eat up a lot of cpu power and get the macbook really hot for awhile, those two processed are related to the way spotlight tries to re-index the external drive or the internal hd itself if I had made drastic changes to it too.
    Could it be that?
You can see them show up in Activity Monitor, they are mdimport and another one starting with md(something) too.
Hope that helps (if that's the issue)
    Best,
    Pedro

  • Rim.desktop.exe high cpu usage and internet activity

What the heck is going on with desktop 6 software? Rim.Desktop.exe is running 10-20% cpu utilization and my router lights are blinking like crazy. It won't shut down right away while this is going on either. I have to force the shutdown to close the app and stop the internet activity. This goes on when my phone is connected or not. Storm 9530.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
If you do not have that 3rd party add-on running, do you notice a difference in the cpu usage? or network connectivity?
Also did you experience any of these problems with running with DTM 5.0.1
The only network connection that Desktop Manager uses is to register the PIN number and to check for updates and down the new updates.  But it does not continue constantly.
I would see if you can use BlackBerry Desktop Software without the 3rd party add-on unless you tried before, to see if it's a third party add-on causing the issue or Desktop Manager.
I look forward to your results.
