Xorg won't start, synaptics and such are involved

Hi guys
After todays update and a reboot, I was screwed. Init step 5 is the last sign of life after the boot process, because than there are no ttys and on tt7 is just a rainbow of colors and nothing works. chrooting in the system of an Arch Live CD helped me starting the DE, but without startx nor xinit. slim the login manager is the one who helped me to enter again in the world of Xorg, but why is that so and how can I fix the issue mentioned above?!
Both, xorg as slim are highlighting this in their logs:
Current version of pixman: 0.18.4
Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org
to make sure that you have the latest version.

Only difference is, that xorg is unable to provide a X and slim seems to not carrying at all about the errors and starts it, but a first restriction that I noticed is that there is no xterm that is able to start. Some sort of log entry:
xterm Error 32, errno 2: No such file or directory
get_pty: not enough ptys
xf86-input-synaptics ; xf86-input-evdev ; xf86-input-mouse ; xf86-input-keyboard have all been installed successfully. Before the update everything was working fine, I mean with input devices like TrackPoint (Vertcial & Horizontal), thanks to the 20-thinkpad.conf in xorg.conf.d
Thanks for the upcoming help.

If you use a custom kernel, you'll need to compile your own nvidia modules: http://www.archlinux.org/news.php#238

I used the same apple id for my iphone and my husbands now all our contacts and such are together.  How do I undo this?  Do i create him a different icloud account?

Yes, start with deleting your account on his device:
(Settings > iCloud or Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar > Your Account)
In the next step, create a new account on his device:
(Settings > iCloud or Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar > Your Account)

Have you just tried repairing with Disk Utility?
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • I have a macbook pro, and i want to transfer my hard drive from my macbook, but the display drivers and such are different.  How do i do this?

I have a macbook pro, and i want to transfer my hard drive from my macbook (500g), but the display drivers and such are different.  How do i do this and is it possible?
The Macbook Pro has Mac OS X 10.4.11 (70g hard drive)
The Macbook has Mac OS X 10.6.8 (500g hard drive)

The MacBook's hard drive lacks the necessary hardware drivers to boot the MacBook Pro even though it has a much newer OS on it; that's why simply moving it into the Pro doesn't work. Presumably you have a very old MB Pro, because only the very first MB Pro model (produced January to May 2006) was ever offered with an 80GB hard drive. Are you sure you want to move your big drive into such an old machine? The MacBook must be newer, because the first MacBook was introduced just as the first Pro model was discontinued.

  • Won't start up and has pattern on screen

Mac Pro running 10.6.8 won't start up and stalls out with just a funky pattern on a white screen. I have been able to do a Safe Boot and have run permissions tests/fixes but it still won't restart properly afterwards...  arrggggh

Clone it to another drive, in part to NOT use the old system for now, and weed out any and all 3rd party background drivers extensions and processes. Or do a clean install, install as much as possible from original master copies/installers.
And move all the data and media to another drive. All but your home folder library so your boot drive is only the system and apps and that small 3GB user data.

Safe boot runs fsck as part of the process, which is one of the reasons it takes a little longer. The Unix fsck routine is essentially the disk repair routine that Disk Utility runs and if it fixed the disc directory errors, then good.
Is Quark crashing on open or are you getting a kernel panic? It looks like you have some excerpts from the crash log in your original post, so I am guessing crash on open. There may be a damaged file in the Quark world or more likely a corrupt cache file somewhere.
You might look in /Users/yourshort_username/Library/Caches to see if there is a Quark cache folder and just trash it and try again for a start.
If that doesn't work, then you might try Applejack at http://sourceforge.net/projects/applejack/ and let it clean out things a little more thoroughly.

  • Xorg won't start as an ordinary user !

    Hi,
I have tried to start xorg from an ordinary user and it does not work ! I have run an "nvidia-xconfig" and I see the nvidia logo but then it crashes out ! What is surprising is that everything works perfectly as root !
    If anyone has an idea...
ps : I precise that I added my ordinary user to the video group (usermod -aG video bapman)

Hi and thank for the answers,
    Unfortunately I tried :
    chmod 1777 /tmp
but it had no effect !
I don't see any particular error from Xorg, or at least no more warnings as if I started as root (which works !). Here is my /var/log/Xorg.0.log

  • POA Won't Start After Removing Storage Area

I setup a test library and in that, setup a test document storage area. When using the client I was unable to make any files in the library. I turned off the storage area and selected the post office option. Then I could upload and create files.
Seeing as I need storage areas I went and deleted the library and created a different one and ran into the same issue. So I deleted that library as well and then fully shutdown groupwise and restarted.
Upon restarting the POA is the only agent that won't start.
There are no logs so I went to the agent/bin directory and ran:
    ./gwpoa -home /our/poa/home/dir
This gives me the following error:
Machine class not defined in area definition (C06B).
The only way to start the POA is with ./gwpoa /noconfig -home /our/poa/home/dir
Hopefully I'm just missing something here. Although I deleted those libraries, they're still showing up in the client but not console1. They also show as having files in them now (guessing residing in the po). I've since run several gwchecks and created a new library with a storage area. That library actually works proper.
With that said, why do I still get this error when starting the poa, how do I remove those ghost libraries (or make console1 see them), and should I be worried that I'm running the poa with /noconfig?

    Have you checked TID 10099631?
Also check Novell Doc: GroupWise 7 Troubleshooting 1: Error Messages - C06x Errors
PS: If you know the names those two libraries used to have what you can try is creating them again in ConsoleOne using their names, remove the documents on them and cleanly deleting them afterwards.
    Hope it helps.
    Roberto.

So although all GW checks comeback clean now, the POA still will not start with the same error of:
Machine class not defined in area definition (C06B).
Is there any other way of manually telling the POA that those 2 libraries don't exist? Is there anyway to remove the references to those libraries or the documents they may have that it keeps finding?

  • Power Mac G5 won't start up and is beeping

    Dear friends,
This morning, my Power Mac G5 started to beep. When I try to restart it, it beeps some more and also makes a clicking sound like a metronome.
The computer won't start up anymore. At startup, it displays a grey screen with a little folder in the center that flashes a question mark and a finder icon.
What is wrong with my excellent computer, and how do I fix it?
    Marnie

    Marnie Glickman-
Could be a variety of things, but most likely your hard drive is not happy. The flashing question mark means that the system is trying to find a working disk with a valid system on it. Should be the hard drive. Isn't.
Launch from the install DVD of the latest OSX system you have. Under the Apple Menu should be the Disk Utility. Launch it and try repairing your hard drive and see if that does the trick.
If not we dig deeper into this excellent problem.

  • [SOLVED] Xorg won't start - Intel Sandy Bridge graphics

Did a fresh install of Arch on my laptop last night, looking to use the window manager i3 which I have installed but when i run "exec i3" it logs me out, indicating some sort of failure in the session. Tried "startx" and noticed that didn't work either.
"grep EE /var/log/Xorg.0.log" shows me the following errors in the log:
(EE) Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "modesetting" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
Extensively read the Intel and Xorg pages on the wiki and googled for an hour or two, tried to create some custom configurations for Xorg but nothing has worked so far.
It appears to be some issue with the driver in combination with Xorg. I've tried updating, then uninstalling and reinstalling the packages (the three Xorg packages + Intel driver) and specifying what driver and acceleration mode Xorg should use (intel and sna). No luck so far.
Anyone here who is having the same problem or know the solution?

Gusar wrote:Not really, because if nothing is configured (and the defaults of xterm and twm aren't installed), X will simply quit, and people will ask what's wrong even though things are fine.
Well maybe I am asking the wrong question then, because I think that might be exactly whats happening. I think maybe my problem is simply related to the window manager, i3.
Here's a link to my log anyways, if anyone wants to take a look and help me exclude Xorg from the list of potential causes:
    https://gist.github.com/anonymous/f85c2a1f2a0319198a09
My original problem was that running "exec i3" gives me a blank screen followed by the login screen. I remember running "startx" at another installation I was troubleshooting and getting the very basic Xorg interface, but I dont have xterm or twm installed right now so thats probably why it's just shutting down when I run "startx".

  • Computer won't start up and was previously acting funny

    Hi,
I am in Japan en route to Bangkok where I hope to find a store that knows something about my computer. I have been letting it sit in my bag for about a week when I went hiking in Japan and now it won't start properly. If I start normally, immediately I get a shadowed screen that displays the message:
'You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several sconds or press the Restart button.'
I have tried this many time but the screens comes up every time now. I then try to restart holding down the shift key in safe mode, which did work just earlier but still with problems, but not it also immediately turns the screen black and shuts the computer down.
Does anybody recognize these symptoms and have some suggestions for what to do since I am traveling. Should I have my installer disk mailed to me from Canada or is there another way to fix this? I can't even get into my desktop so I can't run any tests or repair programs....
    Thanks and please help,
    Alex

So I tried what you suggested and achieved the following results:
immediately upon reaching the root#: prompt the computer itself launched panic debugger and executed it then and finished but with no positive result. I wasn't able to type anything in at the root prompt because this debugger started right away and then I would restard my computer again.
Some key lines from the script I saw:
yellow text that said "Faild to load extensions com.apple.driver.AppleUSBEHCT"
    and also an error code:0X00000000
Do you think this is RAM related or something else. If I need my install disk and I don't have it, can I use any install disk for Macbook Pro that I can get my hands on?
    Thanks,
    Alex
