XP install hangs at "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware..."

XP install hangs at "Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration", this is after going through the boot camp steps. Any ideas?! Is this a firmware thing? Thereotically xp install cd should be able to boot just by holding down the "c" key no?
what I used:
win xp sp2
mac os x.4.7
macbook
What I'm trying to do is get xp running off my external 15gb fw hd. I read on mac os rumours some guy did it successfully!

Can anyone confirm this?
Maybe someone from the Boot Camp Public Beta Forum, which is where you probably should be discussing this anyway.

If you have a PPC Mac, you can't install Windows unless you are using something like Parallels or a virtual application.  If you are using Boot Camp, eject the disc, reboot and try again.

  • Bootcamp Stops on "setup is inspecting your computer hardware configuration"

Just bought a new iMac for my business computer and can't get Windows XP SP2 to load. It stops on "setup is inspecting your computer hardware configuration". I am running BootCamp 3.0.4. It has the 2.5 Ghz i5 processor. I have read other support document say I need Windows 7. I have the same setup on MacBook Pro and it worked fine. I can't use Windows 7. I have programs that require Windows XP. HELP. Please no responses telling me to use Windows 7. I can't!

the 2011s are Sandy Bridge based and your OEM DVD for OS X doesn't have driver support from Apple.
As for windows 7 and legacy apps.... Windows 7 is pretty good at anything other than 16-bit apps, and even has XP mode - or you can try running XP in a VM as a guest OS in Mac OS X.
Your other MBP is 2010 model, no?
I assume Apple would have to develop new driver support and there are a lot of changes in the 2011 MBP. Apple isn't known for backward compatibility. Not when you have Intel graphics, TB, new processor family and SATA3 in there.

The answer has not changed since your last post here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3230576?tstart=0
There are no XP or Vista drivers for the new Apple computer hardware. Apple stopped XP and Vista support. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4410.

    Hi,
use the power-switch on the left backside of your iMac to turn your Mac off.
Use it again to restart your Mac and hold down the Alt/Option-button to get to the Boot Selection screen.
    Choose OSX.
Once in OSX go to System Preferences - Startup Volume and reset it to use OSX as the default.
Am I right assuming that you try to install Windows XP on a new (2011) iMac ?
If so, XP is no longer supported by Apple for use/install With BootCamp.
But there are some success stories when using a XP with SP3.

I am in a process of setting up a new Mac Mini 2011.

  • X230 - Setup Is Preparing Your Computer For First Time Use

    Dear all,
I just received my X230 bought on Ebay and as I first turned on the computer, Windows was frozen and showed "Setup Is Preparing Your Computer For First Time Use" for hours (I guess its a whole day). Since I do not have any recovery media provided, does anyone has alternative solution?
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks! It took me a whole day to figure out what happened and I ended up format the whole drive and reinstall the windows. Yes, you are right, X230 is a good machine and acutally I was thinking to puchase X240 since there is kind of back to school program that you can purchase X240 at a deep discount price. After so many bad comments I chose X230 instead for:
    1. Physical Trackpad button (which is extremely important as I ONLY use trackpoint)
    2. 2 ram slots
    3. normal voltage CPU
I am surfing the net with X230 and I am so happy I bought this.

  • Is installing Lion the same as reinstalling your computer?

    Hi,
I'm going to buy Lion as soon as I'm able to.
My macbook, which has Snow Leopard, has begun to be a bit slow, and I've wanted to reinstall it for some time now, but I've lost the CD I was supposed to use.
So will I get rid of theese 'problems' by installing Lion?
    Thanks!

No. If your computer has a problem upgrading won't fix them. In fact upgrading could make them worse. See the following:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation.  TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible;  Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided.  Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.  Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Backuplist
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    iBackup
    JaBack
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • Win XP SP2 stuck at "Setup is inspecting your hardware..."

I had to slimstream an XP SP1 to an SP2. I even added the boot image. I'm fairly sure the disk is good. But the screen get's stuck at the black screen saying that it's inspecting my hardware. It is the first thing that comes up. There are no errors nor does the screen go blank like some others do. What should I do. I am on the newest 2011 Macbook Pro 15 2.0 GHz model running bootcamp 3.0.4.
    Thanks

  • After installing update, I repeatedly get message "your computer must be restarted to finish a previous upgrade," and I've restarted several times, and I when trying uninstall receive same message.

Yesterday, I ran an update that was available. This morning when opening the browser, it stated that I needed to retsart my computer to complete the upgrade. I rebootted five times (at least) and it will not start Firefox. I tried uninstalling and planned to reload (apparently losing all of my favorites) and I can't do that--receive same message. I'm using IE today :(

Run the Firefox program once as Administrator (right-click: Run as Administrator).
If that doesn't help then do a clean reinstall.
Download a fresh copy of Firefox ( http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html ) and do a reinstall of Firefox on top of the current version. You won't lose your personal data like bookmarks doing that ([http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder]).
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Software_Update (Software Update not working properly)<br />
You may need to remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder:
    Vista/Windows7:
    C:\Users\&lt;user&gt;\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates
    (%LOCALAPPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates)

  • Errors "A media driver your computer needs is missing." or "Windows cannot install required files" upon attempting to install Windows 10 TP build 10041 64-bit

I'm attempting to install Windows 10 TP build 10041 [64-bit]
I am currently being prevented from installing by a "A media driver your computer needs is missing." error, which occurs fairly early in the process. I've interpreted further text in the message as a suggestion that it's a DVD, USB or some other
similar driver issue. However, as I've been able to attempt each install through booting from DVD and USB, I'm not convinced this is the issue.
I'm currently installing to a 128Gb SSD drive. I have installed Windows 10 TP on my laptop's SSD with no issues.
On a few occasions the installation has continue with the installation, and then failed at about 6% with the following error:
"Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation. Error code 0x8007045D". I have not removed the installation USB or DVD.
I did not have this issue when installing build 9841, so am currently assuming this is an issue with build 10041.
Apologies if this query has been posed before, a search did not show up this issue.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Michael,
    Thanks for trying to assist!
I attempted removing/deleting partitions and formatting the SSD as part of the install process. I have also tried installing via USB and DVD with the same issues.
As part of the troubleshooting, I attempted to install a different OS. I was able to successfully install Linux Mint 17.1 with no issues. This further solidifies my impression this is an issue with Windows.
I will try a different USB port, appreciate the suggestion, didn't think it would make a different given the various methods already attempted.

  • Your computer must be restarted ....

This is the error I keep getting after I installed Shockwave
"Your computer must be restarted in order to complete the
installation of Shockwave Player. Would you like to restart
    now? " I went to
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_19304&sliceId=2
and it says I need to search my computer files for these two .dll
    files.....dirapi.dll and
iml32.dll. Well, the problem is my computer couldn't find
them so how am I supposed to delete these files if they're not even
    on my computer anyway?

Hello AKM711, certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in this location, by default:
    #*C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!

  • How to get internet on your ipad without having to hook up a ub cord to your computer

How do you get internet access on your ipad without having to hook up your ub cord to the computer

    iPad is a WiFi and/or 3G device.
In order to use it as the wireless device it was intended, the easiest methods are either buy a WiFi router and if your computer is lacking any type of WiFi capability, you hook up your Internet connection directly to the router, then another wired Ethernet connection to your computer.
You'll need to configure the router via the supplied software for your computer or supplied instructions.
Once the router is set up, you should be able to turn on the wifi connection in the Settings app on your iPad.
Your iPad should see the new wifi signal. Follow any instructions that follow to allow you to connect to the WiFi signal and you should be good to go to be able to use the internet and check your email wirelessly on your iPad.
If you computer has WiFi capability already, instead of purchasing a router, you can purchase an Apple Airport Express. Plug it in to the wall, hook your internet connection to this. Install the Airport Express software to your computer. Configure the AE and your computer to pick up the AE Wifi signals via both the AE software and network software on your computer.
This way both your computer and iPad can share the wifi signal from the Airport Express.
If you own a Mac, there is a an easy procedure for setting up and using an Airport Express with both iPad and Mac.

  • I cant install an update to Firefox and cant remove the old version because a "Setup" pop up window "Your computer must be restarted to complete a previous upgrade of Firefox. Do you want to reboot now?" appears, reboots change nothing. What should I do?

A friend said she downloaded an update to Firefox (a version of 6, I believe) but didn't install the update, but the desktop icon was gone. The only way to launch Firefox was from the Programs folder. When clicking on the Firefox file, a "Setup" pop up window appeared stating "Your computer must be restarted to complete a previous upgrade of Firefox. Do you want to reboot now?" Clicking "No" does not launch Firefox and clicking "Yes" reboots the computer, but nothing changes after restart and the same series of events keeps re-occurring. When clicking on the safe mode file, Firefox was launched. I went to "Add/Remove Programs" and found Mozilla Firefox 3.6.3. When attempting to remove the program, the same reboot "Setup" pop up appears, and the same non-results as previously described, persisted. I deleted all Firefox files and deleted the update set up .exe files. I again tried to remove the Firefox 3.6.3 program, with the same outcome as the previous attempt(s). I went to the Firefox website and downloaded the updated Firefox 7.0.1 set up .exe file, saved and ran it. When I reached the Setup Wizard page that prompts a "Standard" or "Custom" installation, I clicked on Standard and the same reboot pop up window appeared, again with no change after the reboot. So I have a Program installed (Firefox 3.6.3) with no files, and which can not be removed, an executed update/download .exe for Firefox 7.0.1 that can not be completely installed due to the failure to update by reboot problem. I'm out of ideas on how to try to resolve these problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

    Try a clean reinstall.
    * Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 7.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version.
    * Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data in the profile folder.
    * Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.
