XP install problem with Maxtor SATA

I installed XP Pro on an older 4gig IDE drive first, everything booted fine and worked great.  However when I received my Maxtor 250 gig SATA I cannot install XP on it.  The problem is that I copy all the necessary files onto the drive and when XP reboots to get into Windows the first time, it hangs or goes into a reboot loop.  All I get is a blank screen, no error messages.  I followed the "single SATA drive" procedures setting the drive up as a single array as well as just not loading the RAID drivers at all.  Both give the same result.  Also tried switching the SATA connections between 3 and 4. Is this a power supply problem, as it only has 18a on the 12 volt?  The Maxtor drive is detected and installs when booting the 4gig IDE into windows.  Any ideas?
MSI K8N Neo Platinum
Kingston 3200 HyperX
Maxtor 250GB SATA
Athlon 64 3000
Thermaltake 410W
NEC 2510 DVDRW

I had similar problems when I setup my system.
I got a WD 120 GB SATA.  I have XP Home upgrade CD.  I was using a Sony DVD-ROM.  I have built and re-built my older systems using my XP Home CD and never had a problem (and using a DVD-ROM).
But with my SATA drive I got errors that some files could not be copied to the hard drive.  Windows would say press "Enter" to try again and then after a few "enters" it would then copy the file and continue.  It would stop about 4 times with this problem.  All files eventually copied, but then Windows would fail duing setup.  Sometimes a BSOD...sometimes Windows setup would say it had encountered an error and could not continue.
I tried 60 GB partition...80 GB partition.....one time it could not read the drivers from the floppy disk and I had to make a new one.
I tried everything.  Took out my X800 and put in a TI4200.  Tried different RAM.
When I (accidently) formatted the HD for one partition (the full 120 GB) it worked perfectly.
I am still not sure what the problem really was..I wish I knew.  But once I got Windows up and running and updated, my system has been rock solid stable.

  • New install problems with Dell SATA controller

    Hi,
I've just installed Solaris 5.10 on a Dell PowerEdge R200 with a Dell SAS 6r RAID card (I think it's LSI, certainly the modules were picked up during the install)
On initial boot there's a fairly long delay after the "SunOS 5.10 Version Generic_127128-11 64bit" header then I receive: (Incidentally, this isn't a 64bit

Any ideas what could be causing this? I've installed two Linux distributions as a test and not had any problems there but I get the same results if I install OpenSolaris 5.11. Once I'm actually logged in the box seems ok but obviously all is not well. I've run the dell diagnostic tools for several hours against the disks and the controller and found no errors. As above, seems fine in Linux distros.
    Any help greatly received!
    Craig.

Thanks everyone for your input. After combing through the iChat and WiKi forums as well as going through some of the general Apache organizations documentation, I've decided to bite the bullet and reinstall the OS and then recreate all of the setup work, Time Machine backups, etc. to sort it out completely. As is often the case with Apple's server products, they work until the DNS comes into question (change in IP, change in DNS servers, inability to reverse DNS on startup) and then everything breaks. On our older servers, we've seen the NetInfo/Directory services become unusable and often that causes the machine to hang in oblivion on startup. It's a great product when it works; I just wish Apple (or a 3rd party developer) would take into account the issues that so many people seem to face when DNS goes wrong on Apple's Server platform and introduce a "Fix" Program to allow for record and application level corrections. The most common answer to this question "the solution": go back to ground zero, lose precious time and effort, hope for a better outcome. Thanks again all for your input.

  • Solaris 10 Install problem with SATA drives

Hi, I'm trying to install solaris 10 on a x86 system with 2 SATA drives running in a on board SATA controler (not RAID).
During install the setup fails to detect the disks, to install Windows XP I have to provide disk drivers during the setup procedure by pressing F6 and providing the drivers, alas I cannot seem to find either a way to provide SATA controler drivers to solaris, nor a suitable driver for solaris .
Any help would be extremely apreciated.

I had the same SATA problem on builds 69 and 72 of Solaris10, but the Release version recognises and installs readily on SATA drives on three mainboards that I use. They are Tyan s2875 with dual opteron cpus, Asus k8N-E with a 754 pin athlon64 cpu, and Gigabyte GA-K8NS-939 with a939 pin athlon64.
My Mandrake Linux10 says it sees the SATA drives, but never installed on them.
FreeBSD 5.3 Release for AMD64 sees the SATA and installs with no problems.
Hope this gives you some encouragement to persist

  • Help! XP install problems with K8T Neo-FIS2R

The other day I put together a new system for a friend.  I got the system to POST properly, the diagnostic lights on the D bracket are fine, and I can edit the BIOS, and the BIOS sees all the drives properly.
However, installing XP Pro has been impossible.  I set the system to boot first to the CD, then to the hard drive (from the BIOS).  After booting to the CD, I never see the message I am used to seeing ("Press any key to boot from CD...) when booting from the XP Pro install disk.  The system thinks about things for a long time with a blank screen, then later it finally begins to do the install.  Things appear normal at this point as in any other time I have installed XP Pro.  I reformat the hard drive to start clean and then the XP install files are copied over.  I get the standard message that the system will reboot and this is where things get flaky.  The system reboots, but I never get the message once again on whether or not to boot from the CD.  So after a while the system tries to install XP once again (it would repeat this process forever....trust me).  I've popped the CD out right after the system reboots so it will try to go to the hard drive.  I just get some kind of boot failure message and to insert the bootable media or whatever.  I've even gone into the BIOS right after the reboot to switch the BIOS loading to try and load the hard drive first.  This still doesn't give me the desired results.
This is by far the weirdest thing I've ever experienced when doing an install.  I've installed XP Pro on at least 15-20 desktops/laptops of different configs and never ran into this before.
The BIOS settings are stock.  I didn't see anything in there that was really needed tweaking or that hadn't "set itself".  I haven't messed with the SATA or RAID stuff since it's not really necessary in this situation.
    Here are the system specs:
    --Antec 430 True Power PSU
    --K8T Neo-FIS2R mobo
    --AMD 3000+ 64 bit CPU
--40GB Maxtor HD (master on IDE1)
    --Lite-On DVD-ROM drive (slave on IDE1)
--80GB Western Digital (8MB buffer) (master on IDE2)
    --Sony DRU510A DVD-RW (slave on IDE2)
    --(2) Kingmax 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 Model# MPXC22D-38
    --ATI 9800 Pro
    --3.5 Floppy
All the components except the mobo, CPU, and memory are from another AMD system that was running fine.  No problems with any of the HD's or the optical drives.  All new components were purchased from newegg.
I thought that maybe I had a problem with the jumpering of the drives so I messed with those in about every possible combination.  I took IDE2 completely out of the system and just tried to get it running with the 40GB Maxtor and the Lite-On drive.  I tried about every master/slave/cable select combination but nothing was working.  In certain combinations the BIOS recognized everything as I intended.  I've pulled everything off that doesn't need to be connected.  Keyboard, monitor, and internal components are the only things connected.
I don't consider myself to be a guru at this business, but I can get through most things with enough trial and error.  This really has me stumped.
    Any help is certainly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Heath

  • Post-Install Problem with External Firewire drive

I just installed Tiger 10.4.3 and the computer would not reboot. It would stop prior to the Starting Mac OS X progress bar and gray out letting me know that the computer needs to restart.
I finally got it to boot successfully by unplugging or turning orr my external Maxtor Firewire drive. The external drive was plugged during the install process (mistake?)
Via Software upgrade, I upgraded to 10.4.6 in the hopes that this would solve the issue. No luck and when turning the drive on, it immediately goes right to the gray screen and lets me know it will need to reboot.
Is this a known problem with a known solution? Did I FUBAR my drive somehow? Any suggestions for righting to ship?
    Thanks!

  • Z77A GD-65: Windows 7 not installing/running with Intel SATA controller.

I've been having some weird issues with the Intel SATA controllers on-board. They won't let me install Windows at all. I'm using a Crucial m4 with the 0309 firmware.
When I was trying to install Windows with the SSD connected to the Intel SATA controller, installation would always fail sometime around the "Completing Installation" segment. I tried ACHI mode, IDE mode, nothing worked.
So I decided to try hooking up my SSD to the ASMedia controller instead, despite that being advised against. Windows was able to install and run fine on that connection. After that, I installed all of Intel's chipset drivers and all the updates available for Windows, hoping it would resolve the problem.
Then, I connected the SSD to the Intel port again. Now I get a BSOD every time I try to start windows, even though it has drivers for the chipset available.
I'm really upset by this... it seems like I'm going to have to settle for inferior SATA 6 performance just so I can run Windows. :(

Quote from: Warner on 24-May-12, 03:58:56
You can't install OS with ASMEDIA port, and then switch to Intel port.
So basically, if I can't get it to install on the Intel port, I'm stuck using the other one... well, the performance isn't optimal, but I guess it's acceptable as a failsafe. Better than nothing.

Try doing a new installation based on the Intel port, load Intel driver on HDD screen, and proceed.
What Intel driver do I need, and how do I load it during Windows installation?

  • Sometimes cannot start PC: problem with Hitachi SATA Hard drive and K7N2G-ILSR

I have major problem with my 160Gb SATA Hitachi hard drive and my MSI K7N2G-ILSR motherboard.  Sometimes the PC can be started, sometimes it cannot.
After I installed a clean build of Windows XP Pro SP1 onto my new hard drive (as the only hard drive in my PC) and install all the necessary drivers, the system runs smoothly.  However, after about 2 to 3 weeks, sometimes when I start the PC, it cannot detect the hard drive and hence it claimes that it cannot find any VMI Pool Data (i.e. no OS detected).  What makes it really horrible is that, it is like the lottery everytime when I start the PC.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  The highest record was 8 consecutive failures (by resetting or by turning the power off and on again) before I can start the machine properly.  Also, the system sometimes just crashes in the middle of operating.
I have already sent the hard drive back to Hitachi.  Got the same model of hard drive back as replacement, but the replacement has the same problem, except with the replacement drive the PC can be started eventually after many tries, while with the previous drive it is possible that the PC cannot be started until after a few days later.
Also, it seems that my drive can detect either SATA hard drive or PATA hard drive, but not both.  (If I leave my old PATA drive connect in the primary IDE channel, Windows cannot detect the new SATA drive.)
Is my motherboard faulty?  Can it only use PATA drive?
My PC's spec is as follows:
    AMD Athlon XP 2500+
512Mb PC3200 SDRAM (set to run at 166MHz)
Hitachi 160Gb SATA Hard drive on 1st SATA channel (Model #HDS722516VLSA80)
Sony DVD+-RW drive and Panasonic DVD-ROM drive on secondary IDE channel
    Use onboard video (GeForce MX)
US Robotech V92 internal PCI modem
    SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Player soundcard
    Onboard audio disabled
    300W PSU
OS is Windows XP Pro SP1 (with all latest security patches up to date)

    that is not entirly correct.
many harddrives just come with different ways to connect them.
the only sata drives i now that spins faster is western digital raptors 10k rpm.
all other is running at 7200rpm.
    older drives run at 5400rpm
Yes to get the full benefit of RAID, the Raptors are the way to go.Anything else, no significant difference.

  • [SOLVED] Problem with second SATA drive

My laptop has two hard drive bays, and just recently I added a second SATA drive (moved it from my old laptop) to the extra bay.
Now, anytime the second hard drive /dev/sdb has any heavy disk activity, it appears to cause a shutdown of the SATA port for the first drive (/dev/sda)!  Though the second drive is still fine, and I can still write to it until the system crashes from the root drive (on /dev/sda) being shutdown.
If I don't mount and use the second drive, the first drive works just fine, and I can pound it with traffic without issue.
I can reproduce this problem by copying large amounts of data to drive 2.
This is when I get in my dmesg when the first SATA drive shuts down:

I have experimented, and found that if I turn off NCQ on the kernel command line in my bootloader (libata.force=noncq), that it takes longer before the problem occurs.  Though, if I write enough to the second drive, it does still happen after a while, just greatly reduced its chances of happening.
Is it possible that the old drive (sdb) is causing the problem?  I noticed that it is much noisier than I remember when the drive head moves around.
Another curiosity while I was trying to duplicate the problem:
      - I start a large file copy from sda -> sdb
      - At the same time in another terminal, I do "find / -print"
      - When I hear the drive 2 head moving, it pauses the output of the "find" command.
Every time I hear the head move, I see the find output pause.  Its almost like the drive seek on drive 2 causes the whole Sata controller to pause while the head moves.  Very odd!
Anyone have any ideas?   I think the next thing I will try is borrow a drive from another machine, and do the big write to it to see if I get the same results.
If it is of any help, here is some more info on the laptop:

It appears my drive one really is failing.  It was the first drive and not the second making the loud head seek sound.  I borrowed another drive from a friend, and copied my drive one to it.   No problems with the new drive in place.

  • Office Home and Student 2010 Install problems with a Key Code Err..

I had to install a new hard drive, lost everything..So I upgraded to Windows 7 Professional ..
I own a the 2010 Home and Student CD bought at the Microsoft store...Doesn't come with Outlook...
So I ordered the Home and Business 2010 disc with Service Pack 1 Included, this has 2010 outlook ...It loaded and worked fine up to the point I had to replace my Drive with New Windows 7 Pro...
Everything loaded find, but every time I try and use it, its acts like it is caught in some kind of loop...It keep trying install and configure, then ask for my Key Code every time, sort of like a OLMAP132.Dll err...I did manage to make it work once, I even
got back the test email from Microsoft after setting up Outlook....Then when I rebooted the system, this same loop action started ...
I have uninstalled this at least 4 times, searched for anything with ties to Microsoft office, and uninstalled it..Then did a New Clean Install...Still getting this key Code question every time I open up a Office program....So, I am saying without a doubt,
2010 Office Home and Student and Business WILL NOT RUN on Windows 7 professional ......If you have any idea how to fix this..Please respond with facts on how to repair this please....

Greta,,,After down loading ( Off Cat ) tools...I saved that program...However, there is another major problem with Your Instructions I ran into...It seems I'm not the trusted source to change files such as the Mapi32.dll files..So I was unable to attempt
your repair ...However I have found instructions for the task, but it seems very complicated for sure.. Here are the instructions, and I  would like for you and maybe a co-worker to check these.. before I make any changes in system..
How to Change the Trusted Installer name...
    1. Right Click on the File Or directory.
2.Click On properties, on the Right Click menu.
    3.Click On "" Security "" tab
4.Click On " Advanced" Button on the bottom.
5.In the advance Security Dialog Window, Click on "" Owner "" tab
6.Here you will able to see the Current Owner ( ie: Trusted Installed )
    7. To take owner ship of the object, click on the Edit button, Give permission to UAC , the highlight the user name in the " Change Owner To" box that you want to assign as the owner for the object. Then Click " OK " to finish the process.
8.Back in the Advanced Security Settings Window , You will see the current owner has changed to the user you just selected.
9.Click the ""OK "" and exit this window.
    10. Click "'OK"" again, to exit completely from the Properties window..
    11. Repeat Step 1 to 4 to open the object's Properties Window again...
12.Back in Object's Properties window, click on the edit button , and confirm the UAC elevation request.
    13. Highlight the Administrators in the " group of users names"" box. If the user ID or group that you want to manage the permissions for the object doesn't exist, Click on.."" Add"" button, and type in the user name or
group name desired into the "" Enter Object names to select ( can use Everyone as user Name)" box and finish off by clicking on the "" OK""
    14. In the permissions for Administrators box below ( or any other user name or group name you choose). click on ""Full Control"" under the ""Allow"" column to assign full access rights control permission to Administrator's
    group....

  • ITunes 9.0.2 won't install (Problem with AppleMobileDeviceSupport.pkg)

I am not able to install 9.0.2 on my Mac Pro. I have tracked it down to the "AppleMobileDeviceSupport.pkg", which returns an error when updating the system extension configuration. Is there anybody out there, who already worked around this problem? Find below an excerpt from my install.log containing one install attempt:

    No need to apologise.
Okay ... it sounds like they've taken you all the way through the following document:
[Trouble installing iTunes or QuickTime for Windows|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926]
... so we'll try something different.
"There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."
In recent times, I've seen a couple of cases of that message caused on Vista boxes, when the user account that the person was doing the install from inside lacked correct permissions on their C:\Program Files\ folder. They got similar symptoms to you ... some things installed, some things didn't. (It seems to differ from PC to PC precisely what ends up happening.)
So, go "Start > Computer". In "Computer", open your C drive (or whichever drive your Program files are stored on). Right-click "Program Files", and select "Properties". Click the "Security" tab.
Select the name of your User account in the list. Does that account have full control over the folder? If not, grant yourself full control.
After the Tab has done its thing, okay out, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Installing problem with 6230i

    Hi,
I have a big problem with Pc Suite application installer.Whenever I try to install a .jar file that's bigger than about 150-200 kb,I get an error message which states that i don't have enough memory. But i have about 3 MB free phone memory and 26 MB on the MMC. Please, help solve my problem!

I tried to install the version you suggested but got exactly the same error message. I've also tried to install the software from my phone (C5-00), but it's just Nokia PC Internet Access, or something like that and it doesn't even recognize my phone. Then sometimes that program said that it wanted to update some components but the installer never moved from 0%. So now I don't have any software installed related to Nokia (maybe some registry entries or something).
Here is the exactly same error message that I get and I've tried everything that's suggested there: /t5/Nokia-Ovi-Suite/I-get-an-error-while-installing-Ovi-suite/td-p/831427

  • EP 7.0 Install Problem with JDK path

I’m having a problem with installing EP 7.0 on Solaris. We had Solaris 8 and then performed a fresh install of Solaris 10. Solaris 10 had Java 1.5. When performing the EP install at the step to supply the JDK directory message stating 1.5.0 was not supported. I had to install JDK from 1.4. family. I stopped the install and UNIX group installed 1.4.2_13.  I now receive message that directory /usr/bin is not a valid JDK directory:the java executable is missing. The UNIX team told me this is the valid directory path. I am not sure what the exact problem is. I stopped the install and provided the environment variable JAVA_HOME=/usr/bin and the same problem. Has anyone come across this problem maybe my version is not correct. Any ideas on what could be wrong are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Martin

    Hi Martin,
why are you pointing JAVA_HOME variable to /usr/bin.
JAVA_HOME must always point to the directory where JAVA installation resides. So for you it might be /j2sdk1.4.2_13 if the JAVA installation directory is j2sdk1.4.2_13.
If this does not solve ur problem.
Please let me know the exact step where u r facing with the problem.
    Hope it helps
    Cheers,
    Santhosh

  • 5.0 Install Problem with Quicktime

I have a problem with my iTunes/iPod. I tried to install the 5.0 version of iTunes, and things seemed to go fine. However, whenever I try to open the program, it says that I need the most recent version of QuickTime. When I open QuickTime, it says it doesn't have any more updates. I'm at a bit of a loss. Normally, I would just uninstall and start from scratch, but a very unfortunate turn of events occurred when my iPod experienced terminal meltdown at the same time. The iPod is now fixed, but all the songs were deleted from it, meaning that my source of all my music and playlists is my computer. Is there ANYTHING I can do so that I won't lose my music and playlists?! How do I go about fixing my iTunes?

Arg! I just spent several hours trying to change the registry keys without any success so far. I think I've changed about 9 or 10 at this point. (I basically am just following the steps in PFB's post that b noir referenced...finding the key that needs to be changed, adding administrator and system, giving them full access, and then trying to reinstall.)
    The key HKEYLOCALMACHINE/Software/Classes/QuickTime.qtl/DefaultIcon
is the one that seems to be giving me the most trouble. I've changed it three times now, and it still won't let me install QuickTime because of it. (It's weird though, because sometimes that key doesn't pop up as the problem again until after I changed 2 or 3 other keys. Then it would make me go back and switch that one.)
Do you see what I might be doing wrong? (I've never messed with the registry before...) Anything else I can try, please!?!

  • Photoshop CC 2015 Keeps Failing to Install: Problem With a Patch

    Hi all,
I tried to install Photoshop. I got pretty far but then the installing stopped and bright orange letters popped up saying Installation Failed or something similar to that. I clicked on the Learn More link next to the message.
It said  there was a problem with one of the patches, so it failed to install. It told me to re-try in a few minutes.
A few minutes later, I re-tried it and now it says Update Failed  - Learn More. I kept re-trying and it ends up doing the same thing over and over.
It told me to contact customer support.
    ..so here I am.
    How do I fix this?
    Thanks

Benh89930539 I would recommend reviewing the installation log files for update which is failing to apply.  You can find details on how to locate and interpret the installation log files at Troubleshoot install issues with log files | CC. You are welcome to post any specific errors located to this discussion.
