XP Newbie Java P. & JRE Confusion Updates & Error

Hi!
I posted this in TechArena, and received a post in reply that suggested I should post here instead...
I'm an eternal newbie with computers though I never stop trying to learn. I've looked through many posts & don't see an answer to my questions, so I hope this is the right place to ask them.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop with XP Home v. 5.1.266. I use Firefox and AVG. My computer was getting slow and in the last few days some programs started crashing. Today Corel Photo Album crashed. In trying to google the error report I found something mentioned about Java needing old versions deleted, so I checked mine. And this is where I got confused.
Firest of all, I don't understand what the difference is between "Java Platform" and Java Runtime Environment" and I don't understand which version I should have of each. What I do have is:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java 6 Update 14
Version 6.0.140
Java 6 Update 7
Version 1.6.0.70
Could someone one tell me what I should have on my computer?
Also, I read in a post that one shouldn't install an update until the old versions are deleted, yet in another post (somewhere) it said to update and then delete the old versions. I don't know which to believe. Could I get some advice on which is correct?

Thanks for the advice. I did what you said. Then Spybot did a whole scan which took a while. When it returned the computer to me, all the versions of Java were gone from Add/Delete programs. I decided to do a search on "java" just to see what came up. A huge list came up; things like Java Plug.doc, java_install_reg.log, a folder labeled javaws thats located in Sun\Java\Deployment. I'd copy the list, but I don't know how. There are about 89 items on the list.
Should these files be there? I haven't yet reinstalled the correct update.

Java Applets - JRE 6 Update 18

Hi All,
I am working on a web application. Developed a web page using HTML <Applet> tag.
Web page is working fine on JRE 6 update 18 version.
Yesterday, my system gone through auto update of JRE 7 update 25. Today morning, i uninstalled JRE 7 update 25 and re-installed JRE 6 update 18.
Note : Before re-installation, have cleared all temp file, cache files, registry using CCCleaner.
Now, when i go to control panel, JRE 6 update 18 version is installed successfully. But the Applets on web page is not loading.
Error : "Object Doesn't Support this property or method".
Before auto update the same page was working fine with JRE 6 update 18 version, later its' not.

I also noticed the two different files, I downloaded them both and extracted the files to different directories.
The dates and file sizes match; I used Windiff to compare directories and they came up identical.
I guess a different method was used to create each of the installer .exes - I don't know why they are named differently though. From my testing the resultant extracted files are identical.

Jre 6 update 20 on 64-bit Windows 7 - Could not load the Java Virtual Machi

Hi,
I download and installed jre 6 update 20 (64-bit) on Windows 7 (64-bit).
I ran a 3rd party Java application and I got the error saying 'Could not load the Java Virtual Machine.'.
I found that the jvm.dll is installed under c:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\servere folder.
I checked the registry and the JVM is pointing to c:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\client folder.
May questions are:
1) Why does the registry point to the clinet folder instead of server folder?
2) Should I change my registry entry to point to the server folder to fix my error - Could not load the Java Virtual Machine?
3) Is there a better way to fix the issue besides chaning the regiatry?

I don't have proxy, neither vpn. Everything works with Java 1.6 with the same Java settings.
I tested the jnlps also with janela and the syntax seems OK.
What kind of test you mean?

Open "Java Preferences" either from spotlight or your utilities folder...it's probably going to say you need to install a java runtime. Then just click install!

Not one of my errors is on that list!
I am more concerned about the ones that start with "User" then I am of the others.
The only reason that I ran the update is because of the errors that I had on the disk before the update came out yesterday.
I had called Apple last week about the original errors and was told that the new update would resolve my issues; however, as you can see not only did it NOT resolve the original errors but created several new ones!
Today I see that Apple is discontinuing use of Java!
Also, I have 5 days left on my 3 year warranty with Apple and now they are telling me it is not their problem as it is a third party software. I will do one more clean install and will not do the last Java update that I did yesterday.
In any case I appreciate your input and wish you well.

JRE 6 update 10 : Webstart give Microsoft JScript compilation error

We had some problem yesterday with our application that is launch from webstart. Everyone that upgraded to JRE 6 update 10 had the problem. This morning we don't have the problem. We are all on Windows Xp 32 bit, english or french and we all use a proxy.
I suspect that the problem is related to how update 10 handle the proxy responses.
here a screenshot that I took yesterday.
the workflow was this :
we had a jnlp and when we click on it.. javaws starts and we got this popup. We can close it, and the application will download, and before the application starts.. we had the popup again.. close it again.. and the application run perfectly.

I found the problem. I am using a proxy auto config script, which works fine in ie and ff but not javaw which inherits proxy settings from ie.
I narrowed it down to a regular expression literal that ends with an escaped forward slash: /\//. I think it's valid, the forward slash is escaped (works in ie and ff). You can reproduce this by configuring ie to use the following pac script:

Java RE ver 6 update 30 error after installing

i have 4 dell 14z machines that came preinstalled with java RE ver 6 update 27. all the laptops java crashes when an application calls on javare ver. 6 update 27. on one of the machines i tried upgrading overtop of the update ver 27 installed, but now instead of it crashing it just tells me there is a microsoft jscript error: syntax error. this error is affecting my user from being able to connect to our corporate network via a ssl-vpn connection. i took one of the other laptops and restored to the factory image, but instead of upgrading over top ver 27 i uninstalled it, rebooted and reinstalled the latest version and now i dont seem to have that issue anymore. thats great except for i have several machines currently deployed in my environemt and i dont want to have to redo their machines again. i tried the javara uninstall utitly but that did not solve the problem either. this error only seems to be affecting 64 bit java, the 32 bit java runs ok.
can anyone provide some assistance as to a way to fix this syntax error?

The virus you mention attaks the Microsoft-Java-Runtime (also known as MSJVM) and is not related to SUN's java.
I would recommend to completly remove the MSJVM as it has not been maintained for a very long time (5-6 years) and Sun's Java6 can do almost everything which MSJVM was able to do, except some proprietary extensions. So if you do not depend on MSJVM, remove it.

Can not install JRE since Update 23 on Windows 7 x64

There's something different with JRE since update 23. I can install until update 22 just fine, but update 23 and 24 just does not install. I always install with offline installer. I have the error from event manager

Reviewing the preceding posts, I saw the suggestion to remove a java folder in c:"Program Files ..."
Imagine my surprise to discover that there was such a folder on my system after my uninstalls of java using Revo Uninstaller.
There were also java executables in the windows, System32, SysWOW64 subfolders.
After I again uninstalled the jdk 64 bit, I deleted all folders that seemed to contain java
When I reinstalled jdk 64 update 24 to c:\s\java, I was again not asked where to install the jre.
Inspecting the folder tree at c:\s\java I can see c:\s\java\jre but no folder c:\s\java\jre6
However, after this install I am able to execute the java command without seeing an error.
I don't think I'm fully functional yet because an attempt to start eclipse 3.6 (Helios) gives an immediate error windows "Failed to load the JNI shared library "c:\s\java\bin\..\jre\bin\server\jvm.dll"
Since the file c:\s\jre\server\jvm.dll does exist, I'll try re-installing eclipse.

JRE 7 update 3 with javafx offline installation

Hi,
I am testing the option to run javafx application in a clean client machine with only JRE 7 update 3 installed on it.
when I install jre 7 update 3 on this machine from Oracle web site I have two options: online install or offline install, if I do offline install then jre installation does NOT install the javafx runtime, if I install the online install of the JRE than at the end of the installation it also installs the Javafx runtime.
this happens as well in JRE 7 update 2.
Is this a bug of Oracle?

leli.Yes, and the online installation does exactly that. The offline installation is only provided as an extra service, if you make use of that service you are expected to know what you are doing. So use the online installation and you can stop being confused.

Mac Yosemite 10.10.2 -- System Pref. Java pane/ctrl-panel, Update-tab-function no-longer works, after updting to Java 8v40

Under the Mac Yosemite 10.10.2 O.S. -- the System Preferences: Java pane/ctrl-panel: Update-tab-function no-longer works, after updting to Java 8v40 JRE & SDK -- says that the internet connection is not valid !

A few questions....I assume your network is connected to the Internet? Do you use a proxy? If so, is it set in the browser or in the Java Control Panel?

Warning message by JRE 7 update 21

Hello sir,
On installing jre 7 update 21 I get the unknown publisher message eventhough my jar file signed.As part of solution I tried to include the Attributes "Trusted-Only: true" as well "Trusted-Library: true"
in the manifest file.After adding the those attributes to manifest file I again signed the jar file still I get that Unknown publisher message.
Please help How to reslove the issue.
If adding those attributes is the only solution then could anybody please tell me the correct process how to add those attribute to manifest file and how to merge the changes to the jar file.
Detailed explanation would really help me to get rid of this issue.

JRE 7u67 Exception Error

I'm new here and have an issues regarding the installation of JRE 7u67 on a Windows 7 tablet PC.
I have installed Java runtime on a tablet PC, based on Intel Atom N2600. Once installed, I can verify java by going straight to the verification page. If I try to configure java, open the java control panel or launch a page that requires java, I get an Exception error 0xc0000005. Windows reports that javaw.exe has crashed and puts the following entry in Event Viewer Application logs:
Faulting application name: javaw.exe, version: 7.0.670.1, time stamp: 0x53d28730
Faulting module name: jvm.dll, version: 24.65.0.4, time stamp: 0x53d2a5c9
Exception code: 0xc0000005
I have reproduced this error in Windows 7 Pro SP1 and also with Windows Embedded Standard 7 (WES7P). Both were completely clean installations, with JRE installed using the offline installer and "Run as administrator".
I have uninstalled and reinstalled and have also tried installing version 6u45 instead, with the same results. The same installation on other PC's (laptop and desktop) with Windows 7 runs without a problem.
Does anyone have any ideas?

I use MyEclipse (eclipse-SDK-3.1-win32) and EnterpriseWorkbenchInstaller_4.1GA_E3.1(1).
I installed the Bea weblogic 8.1 and MyEclipse on D drive due to little space on C driive.
I configured the BEA weblogic 8.1 Application server with My Eclipse.
With My Eclipse I used Weblogic 8.1. Weblogic have a jdk141_02 which is in built with weblogic 8.1. Weblogic 8.1 do not work with jdk 1.5.
After the deploy of file and when I click on Eclipse Browser Icon.
Eclipse Browser windows show that:
Java TM Plug-in Fatel Error.
Can not load class-sun\plug-in\JavaRunTime.
The Bridge was Installed at <D:\PRPGRAM\Java>
but the class is not there.
Modify the registry key to reflect the new bridge location.
The Key is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Plugin or change
your CLASSPATH to include the new directory.
I already set the CLASSPATH=D:\bea\weblogic81\server\lib\weblogic.jar;.
PATH=D:\bea\jdk141_02\bin;.

Here is how I fixed the problem on my computer. got to control panel. click on add or remove programs. I saw two spots that had java. java tm se runtime environment 6 update 1 and one other one that said java. do not remove the one that says java tm se runtime environment 6 update 1. You want to click on remove on the one under it. I also removed my messenger live. now I have no problems on going to play my yahoo games!!

Java card cap file install error in jcop tools

When i try to run java card applet in real java card it gives this error.i used jcop tools and java version 1.5 and eclipse 3.2.when i run the applet in simulater it works fine.i saw some document it says allocate memory for the installation process.i don't know how to do that.

i am using nxp jcop 31 contact-less card.and it will support for java card 2.2.1 and global-platform card specification 2.1.1 .so i am using nxp jcop training 2007 tools and it has java card 2.2.1 and global-platform card specification 2.1.1.Inside my project there are three jar files these are jc221.jar and gp211.jar and bio10.jar

Any difference between Sun Java System Web Server - Update 1 and update 2

Any configuration changes need to be made particularly for Sun Java System Web Server - Update 2 in the load balancing. because i face issue in load balancing with Sun Java System Web Server - Update 2 , but load balancing is working fine with Sun Java System Web Server - Update1
