XP on shipped T400 under Windows 7 Professional Downgrade Rights- Possible to Dual Boot?

I just received the laptop, and booted Windows XP, all configured and such. I then created recovery discs using the Lenovo utility. If I boot from these discs, will they give the option of installing Windows 7 in a separate partition and dual booting?
If no option is given to dual boot, then will discs allow installation of Windows 7, clean install, over the XP partition?
Also, I apologize in advance if I have missed a thread that directly addresses this question. Please direct me to it.
Thanks!

No, the recovery disks will restore Windows XP on the system. Lenovo doesn't support DualBoot configs.

A clean install infers a format of the hard drive.
I have written a clean install doc for Windows 7 that should be posted in the next day or so.

  • Cannot install Windows XP Professional on my MacBook Pro using Boot Camp.

Cannot install Windows XP Professional on my MacBook Pro using Boot Camp. When I get to the point of inserting the Windows disc and clicking 'Install' at the Boot Camp Assistant screen, it keeps telling me that it cannot find the Install Disc. The installation disc I am using is a new full install disc. I have tried to do the same thing using a Windows 7 disc with the same results. Does anyone have any answers. I am getting desperate!

Perhaps you could offer a suggestion then.

  • Printing from a Dos Program which uses LPT1 running a Virtual XP under Windows 7 Professional.

The Virtual XP uses the printer assigned to Windows 7 Professional by using Microsoft Terminal Services so you see a TS... pointing the the printer
    in Windows 7.
It works fine in the Virtual XP system.
When you open the DOS application to print you must first do a Net Use lpt1:
\\Virtual XP computer name\Shared name you assigned to the printer you want to use /persisent:yes
This works well when you are running in a regular XP machine, but will not work from the Virtual XP machine running under Windows & Professional.
I believe it has to do with the fact that the Virtual XP machine is connecting to the Windows 7 printer that is connected via a Net Use command
for the TSclient  prn12 pointing to the Windows 7 HP network printer.
Has anyone encountered this situation and if so is there a way to correct it.
The error message I get in the DOS application says the printer is offline or not connected.

Have you tried to share the printer over the network in the Windows 7 environment - and then do a net use from inside the virtual machine (rather than using the terminal services printer redirection)? Note that for this to work you will need to be using
a direct network connection on the virtual machine - and not shared networking.

  • ACD as main display under Windows/BootCamp while in clamshell possible?

Is there any way to run a BootCamp Windows XP Pro installation on an MBP using the ACD as main display while in clamshell mode? Currently the system refuses to wake up after I close the lid. I use a BT mouse/KB, but even with a USB mouse connected it wouldn't wake up. It seems like it would be possible, but I'm not sure how to go about it.

Correct, there was no Gather Windows button.
I do have multiple adapters, but one is an Apple adapter which is, apparently, "passive" whilst the other is active. The passive adapter never works at all under MacOS X, but I haven't tried it under Windows. The "active" adapter works under Windows, but only shows the apple bootup logo under MacOS X, and then turns the display off.
I don't think that the mini displayport is faulty, because the second display plugged into it works perfectly through BootCamp.
I'll try thoroughly testing out all adapters tonight, and then try a different brand of display. I've seen a lot of posts about ViewSonics being flakey under MacOS X, so it's possible it could be on the display driver side of things. Maybe ViewSonic does something screwy signal-wise in their displays, and Windows is willing to deal with it but MacOS X isn't.
Oddly enough, the ViewSonic display I have was shipped with a single-link DVI cable, and it's always worked without a problem, even when plugged into the dual-link DVI port on the Mac Pro. So I don't believe that the display *itself* requires a complete dual-link connection to the computer.
I have much appreciation for all the help and suggestions. Thanks again.

Not sure why you want to go backward on Windows 7 since Professional has more features and will be more apt to do what you want to do more with. And no that will not work on other machine unless it is exact model and hardware and even then you will not be able to use the Product Key as well since it was registered to one computer already.

  • Windows 7 Professional downgrade from Windows 8.1 Pro OEM

    Hi,
I purchased new computers for a small business with Windows 8.1 Pro OEM licenses and disks. I was intending to install windows 7 Pro using downgrade rights but when I enter the product key that came with Windows 8.1 it gives me an error with "Invalid
    Character".
How can I activate Windows 7 Pro using downgrade rights from Windows 8.1 Pro?
    Thank you.
    André Gomes

You cannot use a Windows 8.1 product key with a Windows 7 installation.  You must "activate by phone" and hold on to speak with a Microsoft Activation
Specialist and explain your desire to invoke your downgrade rights to Windows 7.  The Microsoft Activation Specialist will then review your request and if approved, will issue you an activation code for Windows 7.

  • HP CM1312MPF drivers don't work via Windows 7 but works fine via Linux dual booting

HP CM1312MPF drivers don't seem work using Windows 7 (64-bit) .  Original HP drivers CD now lost. Current drivers were downloaded from HP's website. (This webpage has a number of drivers and most 64-bit ones have been tried. Prior to my Windows re-install, the machine printed and scanned satifactoralily in Windows 7. One day this O/S refused to boot and had to be fully re-installed. The reinstall has been tried on both a SSD and on a HDD. (I have 3 x HDDs and 1 x SSD in this Desktop system. and I dual boot Windows7 and Linux Mint with data on its own HDD.) No attempt has yet been made to scan after this Windows re-install, as I have a separate photo scanner.  I mainly wish on the to print on CM1312MPF, however it did scan perfectly well prior to the reinstall of Windows. THE CM1312MPF PRINTS FINE VIA THE SAME USB OUTPUT LEAD (AND POWERED HUB) AS VIA LINUX MINT 17 (PETRA)  when I dual boot and without any PHYSICAL CHANGES between changing O/Ss. It must be a driver problem, surely, mustn't it? I look forward to your help. John_of_Penrith

You can also disable that windows wireless "Critter" from device manager and it shouldn't ever again show-up in your adapter list. Thanks for the lesson. I too have wondered about the windows virtual adapter and what it's for. I never had it show-up in my adapters though in the network and sharing center. That was strange that it happened to you. I also occasionally just go to device manager and reload the adapter that came with laptop-not the windows one. It
seems to keep it running fairly well since there have been no new drivers for it. I think it was an experiment or something called the DW1501 Wireless half-mini n that came with my Dell Inspiron N7010 laptop. I don't particularly like it as compared to the other wireless adapters in my home, this thing is slow on downloads, but I don't want to bother to get a new adapter.
Anyhow thanks for the interesting lesson.

  • Is it possible to DUAL BOOT SUN 8 & WINDOWS Server 2k

I just took SA 239 Intermediate. I have limited resources and need to dual boot my Intel Based Sys with SUN Solaris 8 (what we use at work) and Windows 2000 Server. Is this possible?
Keyword Searches for dual boot; dual boot intel etc return nothing. Tons of Linux, not SUN. Anyone have a link?

Yes there is a way. Check the following link:
    http://multiboot.solaris-x86.org/v/1.html
I have used the same document (another section of it) and i have installed in my laptop windows 2003(or XP,2000), solaris x86 (9 or 10) and linux and it worked just fine. you don't have to change the boot loader. solaris boot loader can work just fine. for further instructions and advice just ask....

  • Windows 7 already installed.. how to dual boot with archlinux?

Hi, I have already windows 7 installed on my laptop and as I want to start with arch linux, I now want to dual boot. I want both OS on the same SSD. I could install archlinux on my 2nd hdd but that would be a performance loss compared to an installation my my SSD. As my windows partition already has a fixed size (the fully 79gb or my 80gb SSD), how can i get archlinux on it? Also, can i simply delete archlinux later and windows 7 will work just fine?
    Thanks

Stephanie wrote:If you let GRUB override the Windows bootloader during install you will have to reinstal it if you delete Linux and need the Windows bootloader again.
You just need to restore the bootloader to the MBR, which is easily done with tools like Super Grub Disk.
Its easier than that, boot off a Windows XP install CD, go into recovery mode and type "fixmbr" and it will be back to normal
To get it working op, you will need to make room on the disk for Arch (shrink your Winxp partition), install Arch onto the spare disk and then tell Grub where your XP is located (theres normally a commented out option at the end of /boot/grub/menu.lst anyway).

  • "Lock Computer" under Windows XP professional

    hi,
My Swing app needs to be notified when a user "Locks" the computer using CTRL+ALT+DEL combination and then clicking the "Lock Computer" button.
I need to know even if the computer gets automatically locked via the screen saver. Can I do this at all ?

    You would need JNI.
JDIC has an incubator project, SystemInfo, this has a org.jdesktop.jdic.systeminfo.SystemInfo
    .isSessionLocked() you could poll.
To quote kajbj, why do you need to know that?

  • Windows XP SP2 and Solaris 10 x86- Dual Boot, Single Hard Drive

I recently decided to look into installing the newly available Solaris version capable of running on my personal x86 Intel workstation (Solaris 10). There were quite a few hurdles, however, in getting the system to install, detect devices and associate drivers with compatible hardware. Heres the process I went through to get my system configured to run both operating systems on a single hard drive:

  • HT3492 mini displayport to vga adapter not working under windows 7

i've read the article above. How can this firmware affect operation under Windows 7 OS? I have a dual boot system and tested several mini dp-vga adapter, all of them seem to either stop working after a while or doesnt work at all. i have a macbook pro 13"(early 2011) and a macmini i5 4gb

I'm having the same problem. When I try to connect to the switch in our conference room (connecting both a flat panel display and/or a projector, both with much higher native resolutions), all I get is 640x480. This is a huge problem to using bootcamp, and I really need to get this to work. I was able to get a higher resolution 1280x800 on a separate, portable display, so I'm wondering if people have the problem with standalone projectors or only with projectors connected to some sort of switch, in my case an Extron MPX423A. I have also tried this in both Windows Vista (32-bit) and Windows 7 RC1 (32-bit), with the bootcamp drivers and the latest NVidia drivers, and the behavior is the same all around.
