XP only sees my home folder structure and printers.
I need to move files from XP to a second drive on my G5 tower, but I cannot seem to make it accessible to the XP machine. The second drive is my backup drive and has a folder called archive that has multiple levels of files within it.
Can I open an entire drive up so XP can Read/Write to it?
When Leopard is released, I will get a MacPro and not need the XP box any more but I need to start working on moving needed files off of the XP Box.
Thanks
Hi. You can share a drive with Sharepoints

Reset Home Folder Permissions and ACLs spinning forever
Hi, all.
The performance of my Intel iMac (circa 2008 or so) had degraded quite a bit, so I decided it was time to reinstall Snow Leopard. Did so, then restored my apps and documents via Time Machine. Suddenly, it was impossible to launch most applications (Chrome, the App Store, etc.) Repairing permissions using Disk Utility did not help.
Upon reading an article on this, I booted from the Snow Leopard disk, entered the Reset Password utility, and attempted to Reset Home Folder Permissions and ACLs. The process has been running for several hours with no end in sight and no error message. Is this normal? And if not, what should my next step be?
Thanks so much!Do a force shutdown holding the power button and reboto to get into the machine (might have to hold Shift Key) and get a copy of your users files off and onto a external storage drive (not TimeMachine)
Then start all over using this method select the entire drive to zero erase and install, that should clear the bad sector issue it appears your having.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
Do not restore anything from TimeMachine, it's corrupted data, reinstall all apps fresh from original sources and only files (you know are good) from the storage drive.
This is known as a "fresh install method" later you can update TM to backup this newer and cleaner configuration.
Why is my computer slow?
For Snow Leopard Speed Freaks
once you get all tweaked, clone it.

SAP Netweaver Portal - Folder structure and report publishing strategy
Hi gurus,
I'm working on a project in which we are publishing BW reports in SAP Netweaver Portal (prior to this, we were using SAP Bex Browser) organizing it by Department (workset, 2nd lvl of navigation), Business Processes (workset, 3rd lvl of navigation) and "iview types" (transactions, queries, dashboards and so on). On 1st level we have a workset simply called "Reports".
For each PFCG role we have on BW (ABAP Server), we created a portal role and defined which of the higher navigation tiers is visible to users (delta-linking the top level navigation worksets to the portal role and setting visible accordingly) and then we assigned Portal roles to the appropriated Group (PFCG role) so all users that have access to certain PFCG role can have access to the corresponding Portal role.
For example:
In BW (ABAP) we have a PFCG Role: Sales PMR Analysis - Administrator, which grants access to Sales Infoproviders, queries and data for PMR analysis. The user that have access to it, should be able to see:
|Reports|
|Sales Administration|
v PMR Analysis
> Web Queries
> Transactions
> Dashboards
> Workbooks
In Portal we create a workset that has: "Reports" and under it, all Departments (Sales Administration, Financial, Services, Human Resources and so on) set as "not visible". We create a Portal role called PMR Analysis and add the Report/Departments workset, set Sales Administration as visible and add worksets/folders named PMR Analysis, Web queries, Transactions, etc, and all the corresponding iviews under it.
If we assign this new Portal role to the Group of the corresponding PFCG role, the user will see exactly as the example from above.
Pros: The users have a clean view of the reports he/she has access.
Cons: The users doesn't have a clear view of what is available in BW so he can request access. There might be some useful report lost in on of the hundreds of BW roles that he doesn't know it exist.
One of the options would be to grant visibility to ALL departments, business processes and iviews in Portal and let PFCG security roles control user access, but that might be confusing to have an overwhelming amount of links, making it hard to find what the user needs, specially during first access. Not to mention possible security breaches.
So, I'd like to know how other consultants are defining this kind of folder structure and report publishing strategy in Portal. Ideally we would like to be able to have:
- Visibility of all existant reports even those that the user does not have acess (so he can learn that it exist and request access)
- Clean view of reports, segmented by department and business processes.
- Possibility to search for reports, even for those that the user does not have access.
I'd appreciate if you guys can share your experience on this.
Thanks in advance.
LeandroCons: The users doesn't have a clear view of what is available in BW so he can request access. There might be some useful report lost in on of the hundreds of BW roles that he doesn't know it exist
This is not a refutation: your BW developers/consultants should be able to write reports, which points you in case of insufficent backend rights. EP is not designed to be familiar with ABAP security concept and cant take any influence at it.

Yes, bad idea.
- Visibility of all existant reports even those that the user does not have acess (so he can learn that it exist and request access)
As you already wrote on your own, this would be not good
- Clean view of reports, segmented by department and business processes.
- Possibility to search for reports, even for those that the user does not have access.
This is not covered by SAP, if you wanna provide that, develop it on your own.

Trying to reset home folder permissions and acls
I have been having a nightmare of a time with Adobe apps, primarily Premiere Pro, crashing CONSTANTLY and randomly. I have no idea what's causing it and have been going back & forth to no avail for days with Adobe, and trying a bunch of different things. I keep getting an error that says Thread 0 Crashed com.apple.main .......
I am on a 2014 Mac Pro 12 core, 64GB Ram with dual AMD D700 GPUs, running Yosemite.
The steps I have tried have included messing around with various permissions within the Adobe folders and enclosed files. That led me to then need to completely reinstall my OS from recovery mode. I tried multiple times going into recovery mode, doing resetpassword in Terminal, and then trying to reset the home folder permissions from there, but it just never says done and don't think it's doing anything. I have let it sit for hours and not gotten anything back on it.
I searched the forums and found an older thread where Linc Davis had posted a terminal code to put in, and tried that. Many said that worked for them, but it didn't seem to change anything for me. After doing that, i did go back into recovery mode and see if i could reset the permissions from there, but again, just greyed out the Done button and stayed for hours.
I am at a complete loss on what to do and really need some help. I am days overdue on projects because of Adobe's crashes and because of the time I've been wasting trying to re-sort out the IT stuff that I don't really know much about. Can you please help? ANYONE?it's only been with adobe applications, but unfortunately, they are just not being helpful. I'll paste a crash report here below, maybe you can make sense of it. They can't seem to and I certainly can't. I really don't know what to do. All they keep doing is asking me more questions, which to me doesn't make a whole lot of sense in itself. I would think that an Adobe Crash Report should tell Adobe exactly what's causing the crash. So frustrating and right now highly detrimental to my business.
The only thing that is happening of question besides the Adobe apps crashing is that I can't reset my home folder permissions through the recovery mode. I tried last night and let it run overnight and this morning, it still had not said 'Done'. So i'm not sure if that denotes a different problem somewhere

Did you change your home folder name and now your computer is all wierd?
Hello. I did the same thing and I called apple help and they just couldn't help me on this subject. I was messing around with the computer and I found a proper solution where you don't have to re-install the software. Here are the steps:
Step one: login (if your not already logged in) into the account. It should still be there as the original name.
Step two: Open your Finder or HD and select the Users folder.
Step three: You should see your original account name as well as any one else's account name if you have other people sharing the computer. In addition to this you will also see the name you attempted to use as a replacement for your old Home Folder name, note that this is a new unexpected user.
Have it in column mode for the easiest experience.
In the new folder you created (this is the user on the list that you named your original folder) You will find all your old settings. Don't do anything yet! take and highlight all of the content in that folder by holding shift and clicking or your preferred way. Drag ALL the content to your original home folder, which should only have library and Documents. (if it has more than it's okay) it will tell you that there are already folders with that name and will ask permission to replace them. Say yes.
Step four: log out or restart your computer.
Step five: log in, and or wait till it's restarted Your desktop and dock should be restored to the way you originally had it. Don't change the name on it again. if you want to change the name, you'll need to create a new user.
Step six: Thank me and leave me complements or questions.I think it is rather surprising that the Mac OS allows you to change the name of the home folder and doesn't seem to put up a warning or anything.
I did change the short name used on my home folder about three weeks ago. I used ChangeShortName Utility v1.2 which I got from here:
http://www.macosxpowertools.com
All indications are that using this utility has been 100% successful.
I did create a new temporary account with administration privileges and I ran the utility from that account. This meant I wasn't changing the short name on the account I was actually using.
It is very important to read the "read me" with ChangeShortName so that you are 100% sure of what you are doing when you use it.
Also, of course, back up first -
Classic will only boot from home folder, tickbox greyed out
in classic preferences using 10.3.9, I have a set up where I cannot take the tick out of the tick box that says boot from home folder (Classic is stopped), why is this, what can i do to change this??
the only way round this was to take all the files from the OS 9 system folder and put them in the trash and then replace them with a clone I had made previously and then restart...wierd

I transferred my photos from my PC to my IPOD and IPAD, c. 4000. I thought they would be transferred in the existing folders, all I got was 4000 individual photos, how do I retain the folder structure?
If you are syncing a number of folders from your computer then each folder should get it's own album on the iPad (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236) - I assume that you've touched the 'Albums' button at the top of the Photos app so as to view them by album, and not just the Photos 'button'.
You could try closing the Photos app completely and then re-opening it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Photos 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Photos app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
Another option is to try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot. -
How can i change my mac's home folder name and my mac's name?

Cloning a folder structure and metadata
Hi,
A client needs a complex hierarchical folder structure to store documents against projects in Webcenter Content 11.1.1.8. There will be many new projects being created on an ongoing basis so I created a template for copying. Project level metadata is entered against the top level folder and propagated but each of the child levels needs to have one of the fields set to a unique metadata value - essentially the type of documents in that folder (the folder name will not work).
I have two problems:-
1) When I copy the template folder, the metadata is not copied so it is necessary to re-enter the values for all the lower levels - since there are about 50 they obviously don't want to do that
2) The users must not be able to change the folder structure in any way but they must be able to create a new one from a template by copying it. (the admin people will not be doing it) I haven't been able to work out a security group model that gives create access but prevents new folders being create or existing ones being moved.
I think this will require some automation initiated from inside WCC and ideally could be initiated from the application that manages project creation.
Can anyone please advise on the best way to do this, does it have to be RIDC or is there something simpler?
Thanks,
MI am not suggesting anything yet, except taking a look on the standard functionality (folders migration), which might be close to your needs, but still too far (it will definitely not prevent users from changing the folder's structure).
RIDC is a way to call WCC's services from a Remote Client (R and C from RIDC). If you decide for a customization, you can do (most likely) everything server-side, so you will be calling the same services, but from a custom component. In this case I'd recommend you to go through the tutorial - it goes from a simple helloworld program to more complex tasks (unfortunately, no folders), but it should educate you how to find information you need to do other components. -
IPod folder structure and content doesn't match iTunes Library structure
My iTunes Library has the following folders:
Music
Podcasts
Audiobooks
As expected, the Podcasts folder contains podcasts I have subscribed to, and the Audiobooks folder contains Audiobooks I purchased. So far, so good.
However, in addition to CDs I imported, the Music folder also contains files originating from manual audio recordings I made via TotalRecorder.
This is confusing enough, but in the iPod the situation is even more confusing, i.e. everything comes under Music, which has the following subfolders (among others): Albums, Songs, Podcasts, Audiobooks.
The Podcasts and Audiobooks folders seem OK, but the Albums folder seems to contain not only the CDs, but also all the podcasts.
And the only place I can find my manual recordings is under Songs.
Any suggestions for bringing some order into this apparent chaos?
Ideally I would like to be able to create a new folder called, say, Recordings, in my iTunes Library, and I would like my top level folders in my iTunes Library to match those on the iPod.
Thank you in advance for any suggestions/comments.Which model of iPod do you have? I have a 160GB Classic (this forum) which _does not_ show Podcasts under the Music folder, and apparently does not have an option to do so. However, I also have a 5th generation 30GB video iPod, which does show Podcasts under the Music folder. Straight away, you'll notice that different modles behave differently, so we need to know.
So, that's the first thing to sort out.
Then, on your manual recordings, did you add all the relevant artist information to the file (i.e. the MP3 tags) when you created them? If not, that will be why they only show up in songs, (but there may be another cause too!). You can fill in any missing information by highlighting the song and clicking on *File/Get Info* and adding the info then.
In the long term, the probably answer to your manual files is to give them their own genre and then search for them that way. -
Legacy folder structure and moving "existing" photos to LR
I have always used folders to store my photos. The structure I have used is Year>Month and then dump those photos into the month they were taken. Along the way I have some photos I have named vs. the standard Nikon naming convention or I have named a folder inside of the year (i.e. 2012>Florida Trip instead of putting those in the July folder for example. I now want to make a transition to using LR for cataloging and tagging with keywords. Additionally, moving forward I would use the import feature directly from the memory card to LR.
My question is this: I see many sites that recommned having a standard file structure before moving to LR and I am curious should I rename these exiting folders to something else and/or re-organize them before importing the existing photos to LR? Or should I leave them alone, add keywords to all of them for searching capabilities, and any new photos imported moving forward would have a new structure or naming convention that you might suggest?
Hopefully that makes sense.Adobe uses the term "catalog" ambiguously -- sometimes it means just the database containing links to your photos and their metadata, and sometimes it means that database plus all your photos.
The File > Catalog > Move command moves just the database, not your photos (unless your photos happen to be stored in the catalog folder). To move your photos to the new drive, see this FAQ:

Home Page Structure and Components
We are facing some performance problems with the home page of our intranet (based on SAP EP5 SP6 - Migration to EP6 is starting) and we fair that the number of objects on the home page is dramatically impacting the load time.
We are interested to get the following informations for other companies :
o How many objects / components are loaded on the home page ?
o To have a printscreen of the homepage
o To have an overview of the laoding time (average) of the homepage.
In our situation we have about 100 objects on the homepage and the average response time is about 9 sec. I will post a printscreen soon.
Thanks for your responses - PhilippeHi Philippe

I would like so send emails to multiple addresses yet I want each recipient to only see his or her address
This question isn't related to Mozilla Firefox. However, I can still answer your question. In the 'to' field, put your own e-mail address and put each recipient's address in the BCC field. This way the only address seen is your own.
Please try to post in the appropriate forum next time. (Thunderbird, Gmail, etc.) -
Can Mac OS 10.8.3 and 10.6.8 share the same User/Home folder?
I use both OS 10.6.8 on HD and 10.8.3 (on a SSD). Most of my User data is on the 10.6.8 drives.
Presently I manually save data when using 10.8.3 to the 10.6.8 User folder. I know I can select Advanced Options in System Prefs in my Accounts folder to make the 10.6.8 User folder the User folder that 10.8.3 uses.
If I do that can I alternate booting from one OS to the other using the same User folder? Or is there a problem with both OS's writing stuff to the
~/Home/Library folder that may be incompatible? Or to other places I'm not aware of?
I have more than enough space on the SSD to partition it for both OS's (now only 10.8.3) and both Applications folders - to speedup whichever OS I need to use.
To have one User folder for both OS's would save a lot of drive space and make backing up much easier and faster. But I'm also not sure how I'd use Time machine with such a set up. Presently I backup with Time machine plus clones to other HD's. I'm totally confused by all this and wonder if someone out there has used the same User folder for different OS's.
Grateful for any advise.
Thanks,

Yes, big time. Mail, for sure, has a different file/folder structure, and would not be happy.
Plus, a number of apps (Apple and 3rd-party) are "Sandboxed." That's a security feature, to prevent malware or bad coding from affecting things it shouldn't. Some of their files, including the preferences files, aren't even stored in the same places!
Or to other places I'm not aware of?
Probably. If you have two versions of the same app, they may or may not expect the same data setup.

Not if you use some or all of woodmeister50's suggestions.
But I'm also not sure how I'd use Time machine with such a set up.
Just as you do now. By default, Time Machine backs-up everything (except things like system work files, most caches and logs, trash) for all users and all internal drives & partitions. By default, it excludes external drives.
You can change those defaults, of course, via TM Preferences > Options.
See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #32 for details and considerations of multiple drives.
Presently I backup with . . . clones to other HD's
Good. Yes, clones are different. You need multiple "tasks" to back up multiple drives/partitions. But once set up, that shouldn't be a big deal. -
Hi: Bought a MacBook Pro age circa 2011,works great, except I understand I need to have a Home Folder. I am listed as administrator in the User accounts pref, in fact I'm the only user there. Still in the sidebar when starting up the Mac, there is the former owners Home Folder and not one for me. I want to delete her Home Folder and get one in the sidebar for me. I've tried all the things I could think of the delete her folder, but can't seem to do it as there isn't a button or prompt that I can click on to delete her folder and create one for me as the adminstrator. I'd really appreciate any help with this problem that someone might give me. Carol
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If I have understood you properly, to do that, you have to create a new administrator user with your name and for your uses. Follow these steps:
1. Open System Preferences > Users & Groups, and press the + button to create a new administrator account.
2. When you have finished creating that user, open > Log Out, and log in your new user.
3. Open System Preferences > Users & Groups, select the old user and press the - button to remove the user. If you want, you can select the option to remove the Home folder of this user, so you will only have the Home folder for your account
