XP parallels some acceptance situations

I have been using XP in parallels on my macbook pro, some of the software I have to run on it, is brand new chinese control software for LED displays. Some of these products I can run on my XP and some I have to run on a dell, the problem as I see it it some kinda lack of communication between parallels or XP to the software.
I would rather use parallels than bootcamp because I can just flip between system controll on XP and, Mac only playback pro plus which is a video control and sizing software.
Or should I be running 7??
Thanks
G

I guess what I am trying to say is, I'm not sure if I should upgrade from 7 to parallels 8 ($50) with XP or, bring in the heavies (windows 7) or bootcamp
Your opinions are more than welcome

  • Back button no longer works in some specific situations; also, it appears that clearing cache isn't working.

The "back" button no longer works in certain specific situations on certain specific websites -- especially on the very website on which I need to use it very frequently. This has been going on for a couple of weeks.
Also, I noticed today that the "clear cache now" command doesn't seem to be working. Formerly, when I cleared the cache, I had to re-login to those websites that normally "remember" my login (because clearing the cache erased that "memory") -- but today, after using the "clear cache now" command, those websites still "remember" my login, which leads me to believe the cache didn't get cleared. Is there any other way to check whether it got cleared?
I was attempting to clear the cache in the faint hope that this might help the above "back" button problem, as no one has yet given me a solution for this that has worked. One person suggested having Firefox re-create the possibly damaged "places.sqlite" and "places.sqlite-journal" files. I tried this, but there was no change to the problem.
I think this problem started around the time I had a few Firefox crashes while using YouTube and doing something else on the computer at the same time.
I just today learned about the "crash signature" -- how to look it up, and to include it in a forum question. However, the crash log did not show these recent crashes, only some others from a few months ago. So, I'm unable to show the crash signature for this.
I'm guessing there's a chance that upgrading to a newer version of Firefox might fix this problem -- but I hesitate to do that, because it occurs to me that it also may be possible that changing the program before fixing this might make it harder to fix. I don't have enough knowledge of this software to know which is more likely, and I don't like to try things at random, in ignorance of the possible results. Also, after reading today several other forum comments from people who are unhappy with their Firefox upgrades, I hesitate to upgrade for that reason, also.

  • Lion update and parallels 7

I updated Lion with existing paralles 7 installed and in-use. After update the parallels wizard wants to set up a new machine. It looks like the previous set-up has been erased. Has anyone had this problem? Do I need to re-install windows 7 again?

No, it wouldn't. 2.5 GB of free RAM could consist of 5 chunks of 500 MB of contiguous RAM, separated by RAM allocated by other processes.
Here is a hypothetical memory map. Assume a is application memory, o is operating system memory, and - is free memory.
    boot:           oooo--------------
    run app1:    ooooaao-----------
    run app2:    ooooaaoaaaaaaoo---quit app1:   oooo---aaaaaaoo---
Maybe there is some issue in the way 10.7.4, in some perticolar situations, handle the process of freeing RAM.
What you can't accept, and I don't know why, is that before the update to 10.7.4 everithing was fine.
I don't know why you don't beleve me.
There is nothing in the 10.7.4 update description that mentions a re-write of the virtual memory system. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5167
I just worte here to see if someone could give any advice to do further invesigations.
I know the price of upgrading RAM but I think that this would be a "microsoft like" solution
and I'm trying to find what service or task or whatever is creating this issue.
The only thing "Microsoft like" about buying more RAM is the fact that you need it to run your Microsoft operating systems. It has been this way as long as I can remember. I upgraded my MacBook to 4 GB RAM in 2008 just so I could run Windows more easily.
Perhaps you have your virtual memory settings too high. Depending on what you are doing in the VM, you may not need the default settings. XP will run low-intensity tasks with a 500 MB VM size. It will run just about anything in 1 GB. Linux should run fine in the same range too.

  • Potential new T61 user with some questions about product/support/etc.

    Hi all!
I've been using Dell Latitude's for last 7+ years and been happy with them thus far, as I was able to stay within the C-series thru 3 systems and reuse some components such as batteries, CD-ROM, etc. but now that I'd have to go to D-series, that gives me the choice of going to new vendor...and IBM/Lenovo was the only other choice due to my OS requirement: XP Pro!
So now I'm here asking some questions that I'm still having issues with:
    (I'm comparing the T61 to Dell D530 and/or my C610)
    1) Features that I've used on existing Dell that I don't see on T61 :
        a) Infared port --- I've used to transfer stuff from one sys to another
        b) S-Video out --- I've used to display on TV for some situations
        c) Serial port --- can't recall using it but with my luck, I'd need it sometime.
        d) Parallel port (C610) --- for my really old printer used on rare occasions
        e) Floppy drive --- yes, I still use it for some unusual situations
    2) On Dell, I can put a 2nd battery or floppy drive in the media bay instead of CD/DVD...what about T61?
    3) Support:
        a) Dell forums have 7+ yrs of history and are well used...this forum seems brand new...was there another one before it?
        b) My Dell's have lifetime tech support (ok, so sometimes understanding the folks from India can be an issue) but IBM seems to limit this to life of warranty.
    4) Pricing: T61 would be seem to be, at minimum, about $150 more than similar Dell even with current "sales"...I'm having trouble justifying this...
    5) Things that I see that T61 has that new Dell D530 doesn't:
       a)  built-in mike --- my current Dell has it and I use it now and then so this is a plus!
       b) keyboard light --- nice feature, but couldn't I use a USB one instead if I really needed it?
       c) fingerprint reader --- never used one...how often do people use it?
       d) 2nd card slot for Express cards --- current Dell has two standard slots and I'm using both, though one is wi-fi which C610 didn't have built-in...and other is modem to replace failed built-in...D530 has only one slot, so having 2nd of any type is good.
       e) middle mouse button --- is that what I'm seeing? Or is it something else?
       f) recovery partition --- ok, nice but how much room does it take?
    6) Things that D530 has that T61 doesn't:
       a) 4th USB --- I'm used to only 1 now so even 3 would be big step up...
       b) 15" standard screen --- T61 is only a 14.1" screen and that extra bit of size would likely help, but I'm limited on physical dimensions to 13.5" total width (unusual situation) so a 15.4" wide screen isn't possible...I'm looking at SXGA+ in either case to maximize usage.
       c) recovery CD is standard --- so I'm presuming I'd have to create my own here?
That, I think, about does it...so...any users willing to help me decide if a switch is good for me?
    Thanks!!!
Update: It seems that phone tech support is only available for warranty period with IBM, whereas with Dell, I can still call for hardware tech help (to diagnose problem at least) for "lifetime" or well past paid period, as I've already done in past...comments?
Update #2: Changed the incorrect "R"s to "T"! Duh!
Message Edited by J_Hallgren on 12-28-2007 07:50 PM
A current Dell Latitute user who was looking to maybe switch...But didn't.

I finally made the switch to Lenovo and the Thinkpad line of notebooks and think this was the best move I have ever made in years! I've spent far too much money maintaining a separate notebook (Dell Latitude L400) several custom built desktops.  This December, I sold my desktops, my laptops (I had 2 L400's), and my 20" Aquous LCD TV to finance my Thinkpad T61.  It was well worth it!  I will try to answer your questions in this checklist, which I found to be quite similar to my own .... frighteningly exactly like my own....:
    Hardware Requirements
IR: This is pretty outdated but functional.  I used to use a Palm with IR as well as an IR laser printer.  I ditched both for a PDA phone with bluetooth.  The laser printer is networked now
S-Video: You might be able to get away with a TV tuner cardbus or a expres card.  There might also be external converters that convert from your VGA/DVI (DVI via port replicator) into any variety of video outputs.
Serial: My older Palm had a serial port for the docking station - bluetooth is a good replacement
Parallel port: I currently have a USB to parallel adapter in my bag just in case.  These are cheap cables and work well.
Floppy: I keep a USB one of these just in case.  I find that having fewer input devices on my laptop and leaving them external help keep the machine lighter for my mostly mobile usage (e.g., my L400 with no inputs at all except 1 USB port).
T61 Spare Battery: Uses ultrabay battery - I rarely use the DVDRW drive and leave the ultrabay battery in there while on the go.  DVDRW drive stays in the bag until needed.  I recommend you upgrade to the 9 cell battery with the advanced ultra bay battery, which will give u something like 9 to 12 hours of operating life.  If you are not a fan of the battery pack sticking out like crazy, stick to the letter box format laptop (not widescreen), which will provide the minimum amount of battery pack stick-out with the 9 cell battery.  The 6 cell will not stick out with the letterbox laptop but will stick out with the widescreen version.
Support Options:  I rarely call support so I have no opinion here.
Pricing: Price was not really a concern for me.  I purchased mine for the business look mainly, which Lenovo maintained well.  I don't like the shiny/plastic/toy look of Dell and Apple computers these days.  If anything, consider the premium an investment in the build quality of these machines (or a premium just for the good looks).  I particularly like the roll cage as well as active protection system that stops the hard drive as soon as the system detects excessive motion.
    Included Hardware Comparison:
I like the mic, use it often for Skype and the built in 1.3MP webcam as well.
Keyboard light.... kinda cute but not as functional because it simply is too small.  It was a cute idea that could have been made better had Lenovo opted for a backlit keyboard instead.  That would have been more functional and added to the "cool" factor.
With regards to the Express Card and PCMCIA card slot, I rarely use either because everything is built in.  However, if you want that TV tuner, an express card or PCMCIA card slot is good.  If you opt for the built in media reader, you will be unable to use the express card as the media reader takes up that slot (I might be wrong, but I think the card reader is large enough that it takes up both slots, so u can't add anything anyway - but you should call pre-sales to answer that question).
Middle mouse button: The three buttons in the middle are used for the trackpoint/joystick mouse controller.  I think the middle button is configurable to do various things.  I personally hate the joystick and can only use the touchpad.  The lack of a touchpad was the only reason I did not stick to the smaller 12.1" X line of laptops, which was really more in tune with my size requirements (too used to using the L400 sized machine).
Recovery Partition: This is a cheap way for manufacturers to make it easy for people to recover their systems in case of crash - without the need for any documentation or disc media.  However, it makes it hard for people like me who only use machines after a clean format and customized install of Windows.  This partition is about 10GB and can be erased with special disk format or partition tools.  Windows itself cannot read or delete this partition.  With the minimum size of the hard drives available, this should not be an excessive space killer for most people.  I personally need only 7GB total for OS and apps.  The remaining data I work with is actually streamed from a 500GB gigabit NAS.  I might switch to a 32GB solid state disk one of these days when their performance comes more in par or exceeds traditional drives.
Recovery CD: You can create your own from the recovery partition since Lenovo does not provide any.
4th USB: I only use 1 or 2 as well.  1 for an external micro mouse (I love my touchpad, but it's just hard to use with Photoshop or CAD apps) and a second for a USB memory key.  My other devices i.e., scanner, external mouse, keyboard, are plugged in on my desktop through a USB hub that goes to a single port on my docking station.  So yes, your docking station will probably remove the need for more than 2 ports.  Although, I do find it odd there are only 3 ports... such an odd number.
Screen Size: I personally wish I could have gotten the X series of laptops but the 14.1 was the only other mobile solution.  For the larger screen size, docking station to my 24" Dell 2405FP.  The compact nature of the T series makes it pretty thin and compact though... it was not too much bigger than my L400 - at least, not uncomfortably bigger.
But yeah, I think if you make the switch, you'll be getting yourself a solid machine that will keep u going for years.  The Latitude line of Dell's were really good, but overall, I feel that the nature of Dell's manufacturing process is making it too "cookie cutter" and reducing its overall quality level.  Their earlier lines were awesome, like the D lines you mentioned.  But unless you get the ATG line, you just won't get the same level of quality they used to offer (in addition, the ATG line is wickedly too expensive - I'd rather get a Durabook for military grade spec at a fraction of the price).
    Anyway, have fun shopping! :-)
And moderators or employees of Lenovo, don't you guys get referral bonuses for giving your employee discount code to friends and family?  *wink*

  • Partial rejection of some of lines in multiline cart for header level SC WF

    Hi,
We are on SRM 7.1 ECS.
We ahve configured the N step process level workflow for shopping cart at the header level(for entire document).
The issue we are facing is doing partial rejection.Earlier in SRM 5,even though the header level worklfow was activated when an approver used to get a work item,he could see two radio buttons, one for APPROVE and other for REJECT so that he could partially reject some of the lines(for a multi line cart).
Now in SRM 7,how do I partially reject lines in a multiline cart if the PCW is active at header level i.e. decision type is "Decison for entire document".
    Pls advise.

    Hi,
Depending on your requirement on who has to approve what you can use the below options
    1) Item Based Decision for Entire Document : Approver has option to accept and reject all items individually
    2) Overall Decision for Partial Document : Approver can accept items which he is resposible for. Other approver in parallel can accepts other items in the same SC he is resposible for.
    3) Item Based Decision for Partial Document : Approver has option to accpet and reject items individually but only items he is responsible for. Other approver in parallel can accept and reject other items in the same SC he is resposible for.
    Hope this solves your issue

  • Item Level Parallel Processing

    Hi,
We have a scenario where a Shopping Cart has 2-3 items which shall be parallely processed. Each Item based on some table contents shall derive the Approver and shall sent an email. Also at times an Item may have multiple approvers which is mentioned in the custom table, hence shall sent mails to all the approvers. This also has to be  parallel approval process.
Once all the Items are approved or Rejected shall go to the creatoru2019s u201CReport Tou201D for overall document approval.
    Clarification on Process:
Seems PCW works in this scenario.  We are in SRM 7.0.
In this case, we understand that we have to have 3 process levels to be defined one for Items, second for Over all document and third for Automatic. ( Is this True)
The Item level shall have Event which will get the logic through BADI ( Is this True ).
Also for Multiple Approvers we need to fill the Intenal table RT_APPROVERS  and this table ids will be sent emails. ( Is this true )
Approval or Rejection is taken care automatically. ( Is this true )
For the over all document, as per the approval limits Approvers are determined ( I think in this case I shall have more process levels instead of 3 in our above case right.) OR SRM Org structure will take care  isn't it..
Also, for one Item the approver has suggested some changes then it should go back to the creator and if creator does modifications as per the approver suggestions it shall retrigger the work flow. Hope this is standard process if not what are the steps to be taken.
We will not be modyfying Work flow in PFTC.
Request your comments on this. Request your personal email id for futher clarifications.
    Bharat.

    HI,
maybe you need to check the decision type you use for each level
These are the available decision types you can use in a process level
    1) Item Based Decision for Entire Document : Approver has option to accept and reject all items individually
    2) Overall Decision for Partial Document : Approver can accept items which he is resposible for. Other approver in parallel can accepts other items in the same SC he is resposible for.
    3) Item Based Decision for Partial Document : Approver has option to accpet and reject items individually but only items he is responsible for. Other approver in parallel can accept and reject other items in the same SC he is resposible for.

  • Hi preventing parallel processing for a program treating open dataset

    Hi
Has anyone come into a situation where he had to do an inbound interface
(i.e using open dataset by scanning all the file in AL11)
how do you treat program running in parallel in this situation.
what i mean is that if the same program is doing an open dataset and treating the same file in al11.  Then inconsistencies may occur
is there a way to lock a program that is running that is triggering an error message "

    Hi,
I too faced a similar situation and this is what I implemented.
Whenever your programs starts processing a particular AL11 File, Create a New Flag File in the Same Directory.
Say if my file name is usr\bin\ABC.DAT, before OPEN DATASET command on this file, I would create a new file usr\bin\ABC.DAT.FLAG!!!.
After the processing ABC.DAT is done, I delete the Flag File.
In the mean time, If some other program, (or for that matter the same program) executes in a different session and tries to open the same file, we can check for the existence of the FLAG FILE.
So the code is as follows.
CHECK for the Existence of FLAG FILE.
If FLAG FILE Exists, STOP. " another session is processing it.
    ELSE.
    CREATE FLAG FILE.
    OPEN DATASET, and rest others.
    CLOSE DATASET.
    ENDIF.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks,
    Surya

  • Question for Mac users familiar with Parallels

I've just installed Parallels on my Macbook and I've downloaded Windows XP from my educational institution's FTP site. Before you ask, I've been assured that it is 100% legal for institutions [i.e. universities) to provide this kind of software for their members. The only problem is that the software I've downloaded is a .EXE file which is not accepted by Parallels. Parallels only accepts Real CD/DVDs or ISO image files.
Therefore, I'd like to know how to convert this .EXE file to a format that Parallels will accept. Keep in mind that I do not have a CD burner on this Macbook so burning the exe to a Real CD is out of the question. I guess converting it to an ISO file is the only way.

EXE is an executable format; we can't help you with it if we don't know what kind of EXE it is. Is it called setup.exe? It's probably meant to upgrade an old copy of Windows. Even if we have the name, it's still probably too vague to know what to do with it. Contact your sysadmin or whoever and ask them what you're supposed to do it. If the instructions rely on you already having Windows installed, there's not much you can do. If your institution gives you a CD-key for Windows XP, I think you can download Windows XP from somewhere else and use that CD-key; you should be protected legally if you upload nothing. IANAL and I have my own retail copy of Windows.

  • Runlogic PH issue on BPC 10 for parallel run

    Hi,
We have implemented runlogic PH keyword on BPC 10 for running currency translation in parallel with change parameter Time.
for ex: if we run the package with time period 2013.01. as per logic it is supposed to run for all months in 2013 from 2013.01 to 2013.12 in parallel.

Hi,  I have a Master Data object configured as an infoprovider.  I am trying to load the object from 2 different sources in parallel in my process chain.  This seemed to work in my dev environement, but one of the loads is failing because of master data lock.
There are no duplicate characteristics between the 2 sources so no conflicts exist there.  Is it just that I cannot load 2 sources into the master data infoprovider at the same time?
    ThankS!

    Hi Kenneth,
On the following (parallel) processes lock situations can occur:
    - Hierarchy and attribute change runs is locking temporarily parts of a BW system
    - Loading master data for the same InfoObject (risk when loading in parallel master data out of several source systems)
( Can be avoided (if wanted) by applying note 421419)
    - Rolling up data of the same InfoCube
    - Selective deletion on InfoCube and parallel loading
    - Activation or deletion of ODS object data and loading it
    Best regards,
    Eugene

  • FireFox, despite being in a separate window, which is suponque a separate instance, when leaving the menu "exit" All the windows are closed, why is that? It has some configuration that prevents this?

    open FireFox
    press [CTRL]+[N]
(now are 2 Window of FireFox, ok?)
    click on Menu
    click exit
Ops! All Window of FireFox are closed?

But Properties exposes no API to restore defaults to the current instance. If some key/value gets "overwritten" by a put in the current instance, shadowing a key/value in defaults, there is no way to bring the default value back to the foreground except by deleting key (and thus restoring visibility to defaults).Err...although true I doubt it is relevant.
    Consider.
    1. Something grabbed a property value before you did anything. Nothing you do will change that. I suspect most VM stuff works this way.
    2. Something grabbed the properties and kept a reference. Nothing you do will change that.
    3. You changed it, so why would you want the other value?
    4. Deleting it does restore it.
Given the above what situation from that do you think is relevant to your question? Or is there some other situation that you are considering?

  • Lion 10.7.4 issues with Virtual Machines

    Hi,
I'm having lot of issues with virtual machines (both Parallels and VMWare)
since having update to lion 10.7.4.
    I make myself:
If I switch on Mac OS a run any vitrual machine software
I can run Windows XP and Ubuntu at same time with no issue and very fluently.
But, if I switch on Mac OS and start using Eclipse, Safari 5.2 and other production stuff and
want to use vmware or paralles
they become unusable even if I quit all the tasks ans "purge" memory.
(eg: if i click start button on windows I have to wait seconds before the start menu pops up)
    Any Idea?
I have MacBook Pro 13 Unibody mid 2009 with SSD Drive AND 4GB of RAM
and I had no such issues with Lion 10.7.3

  • The mother of all iChat AV problems

All the computers listed below can text chat among themselves but almost all of them cannot audio or video iChat AV with each other.
I hope you can follow along, as this will get very complicated. It is a hard story to tell.
I have been working on this for about 3 weeks now. I have read just about every post in the past 3 weeks. A 2nd Level Apple Tech Support person said I should post this for all to read because it encompasses so many problems all at once without any results and I have some interesting situations. I have tried every single suggestion in the forum without any results. I have spent hours on the phone with Apple iChat support, 2nd level Apple support and Linksys support. I’m an experienced iChat AV person and have been video conferencing for 10 years, starting back with CU-SeeMe. Actually did Beta testing for that CODEC. At the end of this, I will tell you what I haven’t tried yet, and it’s only one thing. And Ralph Jones of the UK, I have read every page of your website about ichat AV and tried everything on it. Thanks for the good work along with everyone else.
I’m the tech administrator for a Day Care Center. At the Day Care Center there are 15 Macs; 12 new 14 inch iBooks - 1.3 GHz with 756 MB RAM, one -15inch PowerBook 1 GHZ with 1 Gig RAM., an iMac 1 GHz with 1 Gig RAM, and one – 17inch 1.67 GHz PowerBook with 1 Gig of RAM.
    My office has 2 Macs using iChat AV, a PowerBook 400 Titanium – 500 MB RAM and a G5 – Dual 2GHz – 3500 MB RAM.
All ADSL connections, all Verizon DSL. There are 8 different locations involved in this. 7 locations are using Linksys WRT54G routers, version 2 and 5’s, all updated to the latest firmware. My office is using a Linksys WRT54GS version 1 also updated to the latest firmware. 7 locations are using Westell 2200 DSL modems, and the one residential location that is DHCP is using a Westell 6100 Modem, the 6100 is set to default settings.
7 locations have static IP’s from the ISP and the 8th location is DHCP direct from Verizon (a typical residential set-up). Each location has 2 computers associated with it, all with iSight cameras. All 17 computers are using iChat AV through an AIM account.
All the computers are running OS 10.4.3 and are up to date as of this posting, including the J2SE 5.0 ver. 3 update and the Security Update 2005-009.
At my office and the office of the Day Care Center, all the computers are designated with a static IP. At the other locations the computers are DHCP, set to automatically get an IP from the router.
In all attempts to video iChat with all the computers, whenever an attempt is made, the 2 computers always get a video preview window and they say, “Starting video chat with …”, but then the dreaded responses always follow after trying to accept; “Did not respond”, “Fail to start video chat”, or “Cancelled the connection.”
So first, my office and the Day Care Office (DCO) have been video conferencing for over 1 year with iChat AV, but now we can no longer video chat. The only thing that changed was at both locations the routers went form an older Linksys WAP54G (A, B, & G) router to the WRT54GS ver. 1 at my office and a WRT54G ver.2 at the DCO a while ago. I can no longer video conference to the DCO nor can they video conference to me between any combination of the 4 computers at the 2 locations (a G5, PB 400, PB 1 GHz, iMac 1 GHz.). Not to long ago they all could video iChat with each other.
My office (with both computers) can iChat with the one location that is DHCP (the Verizon residential setup – both routers set to their defaults, no special stuff). But I can only video conference with the iBook not the PowerBook. In reverse, the iBook can call me but the PB can not. I have brought the PowerBook back to my office and it can video iChat back to the iBook at it’s location from the PowerBook that came from that location. The PB can even connect to my 2 computers on my router at my office. We did a 3 way to the iBook with my G5 hosting, the PowerBook at my office and the iBook at it’s location. When I take the PoweBook back to it’s original location (where the iBook is – the residential location) it can’t video conference with my office, no matter who calls whom.
In the remaining 6 locations, none of the computers can iChat with any of the other locations at all. I have only been able to iChat with the one location that is the Verizon DHCP location (residential setup) and only to the iBook not the PowerBook.
Now to get even weirder, as I said each location has at least 2 computers. At each of the 7 locations (but not my office), the 2 computers at that location, on the same router, can iChat between themselves over AIM (not BonJour) but they can not video chat with any of the other 7 locations.
All 17 computers connect correctly to the Apple iChat test sites: appleU3test01 and appleU3test03 at very good speeds. Oh speaking of speeds, when I first thought maybe it was a connection speed problem, I checked each location by downloading a file off the ISP’s server to check actual speeds, no connection is slower than 75 KB/s, most are plus 150 KB/s downloading the file. I tried 5 different DSL speed websites such as DSLReports.com and they are so inaccurate for testing speeds, they’re not worth using. I would get variations of speeds sometimes 400 to 500 Kbps difference between web services from the same computer at basically the same time.
To recap, my office G5 can only chat with one computer of the 17, the iBook at the Verizon residential setup. The PowerBook from the residential setup can chat back to its home connection to the iBook from my office only. None of the other computers can chat with each other from one location to the other. All the computers (except my G5 and the one iBook) can only chat with the other computer that is located on the same router.
I have concentrated on trying to get my office and the DCO connected. I have tried everything. That’s why after talking with Apple about this, the tech said to post this. Not many people will have so many computers simultaneously to work with. He even said I tried everything.
The one thing I haven’t tried is removing the Linksys router from both ends of a connection and just go through the Westell Modem. There is too much involved changing over the 2 offices or the other locations with all the computers at each location. I can’t afford to experiment that way with working business situations. These are not home environments.
I’m still not sure if the problem is an Apple thing with the latest updates or a router problem because the firmware updates have installed a lot of security stuff. I never had to even consider Port Forwarding or anything. iChat AV with the Linksys routers in their default settings just worked.
One odd thing I noticed while I did all this testing, if you have 2 computers at the same location that both have the same apple test site in the buddy list (example: appleU3test01) when one connects to the test site, the other computer lists the buddy as in use, and the second computer can not connect to it. As soon as the first computer disconnects, it becomes available to the second computer. You would think the test site can handle multiple people at the same time. In addition, each computer can connect to a different test site at the same time over the same router. I don’t know what it means, I just found it interesting.
    Thanks for listening,
    Jim

EZ Jim & Ralph, I appreciate your suggestions.
EZ - I have not had time to view entirely your website on ichat. It looks pretty complete. Too busy. Equipment conflicts I don't believe I have any. There is nothing on any of the computers except the iSight camera. No other external or internal equipment added. Very little software other than Microsoft Office 2004 and a cople of other things. They are not loaded with stuff, pretty basic.
Also each little network location works fine, the only thing I'm having trouble with is Video Chat. They all text chat to each other just fine, including the Windows machines (some locations have windows xp machines only).
Ralph - first - each Day Care location is in a different building around our community and each has a DSL line with it's own static IP from the internet service provider. Each location has one Westell Modem/Router 2200 that has been made into a modem, setting it up as a bridge as my service provider requested. And each location has a Linsys Router with the Static IP to the ISP. Each computer has it's own AIM address.
On the Modem I changed the IP address so it wasn't the same as the Linksys Router.
I want to say, I think like you that it's the modem. I got that feeling from your last post.
I have checked out my G5 and I can Video Chat to a lot of people (settings below). I restored it back to the way it was originally set up when I could video chat with the Day Care Center Office (DCCO). I can chat with my son (he has similar Linksys WRT54G Router, the version I still don't have, and an iSight camera), my parents (they have a cable modem, and an old Linksys A&G Router, iSight), my neighbor (I lent him one of my iSights, he has Verizon Fiber Optic and a Apple Extreme Base Station). All video chatted fine.
My Linksys is now set to defaults. I restored everything back. This is how it was prior to all the testing (port forwarding, etc.)
Security: Firewall protection is enabled. Block Anonymous Internet Requests, Filter Multicast, Filter IDENT (Port 113) are all checked and on. Filter Internet NAT redirection is not checked.
    Administration: UPnP is Enabled.
Applications & Gaming: No Port Forwarding, No Port Triggering, No DMZ, No QoS.
The one thing different in all this is the Modem. I am using a discontinued Westel Wirespeed model; A90-210015-04.
My son is using the same type Router (different version) but a different Westell modem (I don't know which yet) He has Version DSL. The Router is set to defaults like mine is now and we conference fine.
The DCCO who I use to video chat with but can not now, has had the Modem and the Router changed. They had an old Linksys A&G router and an old discontinued Westel Wirespeed model similar to mine (the model I don't know yet). Now they have a Linksys WRT54G ver. 2 and a Westell 2200 Modem/Router (set up as a modem only).
So I'm going to work on the Modem theory first at the DCCO. I'm going to try to put the old modem back and see if it works. I can only do this on Fridays when only one person is in the office. I can't shut them down to test this. So I'll get back to you after Friday.
Thanks again for your good and helpful suggestions.
    Jim
Gee, I wish they would have left the spell checker in this forum.

  • USBOTG and Charge Simultaneously on Stream 8

To keep this thread as efficient and productive as possible for all those who it will be useful to: Unless you have in front of you1. A schematic of the Stream 8 USB port (USB port and battery power circuit etc)2. Source code of the BIOS firmware and kernel which control the hardware Please DO NOT reply simpy to say "this is not possible".  Given the above being true, you do not have enough info to say "not possible". If no one replys with a solution, let it be called impossible by default. Also please do not reply to say "I don't know how"  or "but I know how to do this other thing" thats also not so helpful. A BIOS update or other software update may be required by HP, Microsoft or both to make this really intuitive, and completely possible, functionality available. And hopefully this thread can be a consolidated effort by all of us who have the Stream 8 to bring any such necessary changes about.  A majority of other tablet PC are capable of this.  It seems that only the Stream 8 and a few others have trouble with it. ~~~~ I desire the ability to use a simple, perhaps standard, inexpensive cable (with minimal active electronics inside) that allows me to host and use one or more USB devices on the Stream 8 via its USB micro B port while this cable can also be connected to a standard charger and charge the Stream 8 simultaneously.  This means the cable has a minimum of three connectors.  One possible configuration is as follows (leaving the normal charge cable aside): 1. USB Micro B Male - to connect to the Stream 82. USB A Male - to connect to the AC charger (ie the one that came with the Stream 8)3. USB A Female - one or more connectors to plug in USB data stick, keyboard, mouse or even a hub. Connector # 2. above will provide power to charge the Stream 8 via conn. #1 and also supply power to the external USB device(s) via conn. #3 while they are in use - all simultaneously. A plus if the same cable can act as a normal OTG without a charger for when no external power is available.  Maybe this will require a switch or some active electrontics inside. The final part of this goal is kind of important for various reasons.  I would like HP, the maker of the Stream 8, to state in writing the correct mode necessary to do this so that other manufacturers or even do-it yourselfers can make maximal use of their HP tablet equipment. ~~~~ The neat thing this will alow a person to do with their tablet, is to work at home using the tablet like a desktop PC by connecting a keyboard, mouse, perhaps external display (with USB to display adapter) and work for a long time without being time limited by battery life because the charger supplies the power to everything involved. If there is only one #3 connector on the cable then an additional hub of coarse would be required to provide support for those multiple USB devices at once.  However it would be better if there were multiple of the #3 connectors built in to the cable itself.  This would be best because a proper USB hub also requires its own power.  Only one power adapter would be needed if the whole thing were integrated into one. ~~~~ I would really like replys from anyone who has already accomplished USB OTG plus simultaneous charging with the Stream 8. (independant of any published "correct" way is also welcome) The date today is 2015-01-16.  If by 2015-02-16 (one month) no one has posted a solution then lets start to bug HP and Microsoft about it shall we? ~~~~ Technical Background: I understand the possibility that the tablet software and or firmware needs to make a decision about which way power is flowing on the power pins of the USB mirco B port. I know that with proper design the electronic circuit carring these power signals inside the tablet could be sensitive to what is plugged in and safely decide for itself what to do without any need for software control.  For example by periodically testing/sensing voltage differentials or current direction to see which sides of the connector can supply power. But that is only one of many "could bes" Furthermore this may be non-standard with respect to the USB standard.  What appears to actually be the case with many OTG+Charge cables is that physical cues built into the cable or charger are used to signal to the tablet what the situation is.  Then the tablet's firmware/software recieves the signal, interprets what the situation is intelligently and responds by flipping the correct hardware control bits to turn on, or off power flow at the port and also control its direction in or out. I am not familiar with the USB standard.  Perhaps I could do more research, if I had faith that HP followed it with the Stream 8 or even that the standard covered this situation explicitly. But to a degree it seems like I am having to invent something that should intuitively just exist as it does with other tablets. No?  Maybe I am overthinking but I can't find any USB OTG + Charge cables that specify compatibility with the HP Stream 8. Anyway, I have been made familiar with two methods other tablets use to send the above mentioned signal to the hardware/firmware/software of the tablet to clue it in that it is time to charge vs. time to OTG or both. The first method is a 0 Ohm to 200 Ohm short between USB A pins 2 and 3.  Those are the bidirectional, differential data lines D- and D+ respectively.  In data mode all data goes back and forth on these lines.  When you charge via a data cable, it is the charger module which places this short, not the cable.  I have measured the short on three different chargers.  It is 0 Ohms on two of them, one of those being the charger which came with the HP Stream 8.  The other 0 ohms was generic.  The third was for an apple iPad and it measured about 53KOhms.  That is probably not the 0-200 Ohm resistor but probably it is the termination impedance indicating that there is some communication intelligent serial port in the charger itself.  Let it up to Apple to be different. This method is somewhat moot because this mode of signaling would prevent OTG + Charge because it seems unlikely that you'll be able to OTG when the data lines are shorted to one another and loaded down with such low impedance.  I could be wrong about this. . .  The other method I have seen suggested to work with some tablets and phones other than the Stream 8, is to short the USB Micro B pin 5 to pin 4 with 0 Ohms to 100,000 Ohms. USB B has 5 pins.  USB A only has 4.  The extra pin on B displaces the GND pin from pin 4 to pin 5 and makes pin 4 an ID pin. So this signal applies a pull-down to the ID pin (pin 4) or in some cases I have seen it suggested to short it down with 0 Ohms. Dead shorting things always makes me nervous.  If ID is a simple high impedance normally high input, a resistor could be used to make the voltage well below the low or zero threshold while also preventing the risk of damage when fooling with a device you don't have the schematic for. Still, 100K is a little high for a "pull down" in most situations I am used to.  Even a 10K would be iffy. A 1 K or 2 K seems pretty safe but then things are lower and lower current these days. . .   Anything but a dead short though if possible. So it seems possible to me that the device might be able to "identify" by the specific value of the resistor that is here.  In other words the resistor is not a pull down but actually an analog ID signature, in which case the exact value will be critical. So if this is the case, a guess isn't going to work. Obviously in any such scheme as described above, some chip inside the Stream 8 would need to be responsible for supporting such intelligence. I am hoping that the Stream 8 has such a chip. Likely a register inside that chip would reflect at all times what the state of the ID pin is with a binary number.  All that is needed is for the BIOS to address the chip and the register in it and read that number via the bus to determine what is going on at the port. Finally it would use that info to send hardware control signals to the power electrontics to set the proper direction for power to flow etc.  (and change the state of the icon on the screen of coarse) I am not sure if the ID pin method described is a USB standard or not either. There may possibly be a third way. But I do not suspect it would be possible with a non-active external device. In any case too complicated for the novice DIY for sure. The apparatus would need to act is some kind of bus extender.  Like an active hub.  But it would use the serial USB data lines handshake and in addition to replicating one or more additional USB ports, intelligently inform the tablet to get with the program which is "now we are going to otg and charge at the same time." This requires an intelligent external device with a CPU in it probably. It seems to me that many other tablets have managed accomplish the goal here witho the necessity for an intelligent external device and so the Stream should also be able to do so. There is a device which claims to be able to work with the HP Stream 7 and 8 and even provides ethernet and DVI ports in addition to the USB and of coarse charges the stream as well.  But its expensive because it is active.  Se here: http://amzn.com/B00OVDE0GC It is called a "Docking Station" A reference for a product that does exactly what I want (possibly without active electronics) is here: http://amzn.com/B00LTHBCNM It is by Kirin and it is a squid type device with four USB ports.  It does precisely what my objective is.  But reading in the reviews a Stream 7 user indicated that it would not OTG and charge, not exactly clear if it worked as an OTG USB hub or not.  Another reviewer indicated that it would not even support a single USB device much less charge on the Stream 8.  This device has a switch on it. I forgot to mention that some "hackers" have claimed to succeed with other tablets to trick their devices by using a multi step process to plug things in.  Usually in general they would get the tablet connected and charging first, then they would flip a switch or something removing whatever resistor or signal was presented by the first switch position. For whatever reason the tablet would continue to charge. Then the data lines would be free and they would plug in a usb stick and it would mount up correctly even as the tablet was still charging. Its like the power circuit has a latch that will not allow it to flip to "power flow out" mode so long as it senses power is still flowing inward regardless of what software is telling it.  Complete guess here. Such tricks  seem iffy to me.  Changes in the BIOS could change the way this works.  Also you can't be sure what is really happening if you don't have a schematic.  You could damage your tablet.  A lot of people go by the charging icon indicated in the OS to know if the tablet is charging.  But I am a low risk kind of guy and my policy is generally to not intereperet indicators to have any meaning at all the once a device is operating in a non standard setting.  Especially when its something i didn't build and couldn't fix if I fry it. Hypothetical reasoning: tell me what sensory data actually drives the state of the on screen charging indicator?  Does it reflect the hardware control bit that actually programs the power direction and state on the port?  Or does it measure the direction of power flow, say in the battery supervisory section of the circuitry?  Point is - none of us have a schematic because it is proprietary. To really be safe depending on how smart the hardware electronics are, the port needs to be in a deliberate "power flow in" mode. If it is in a "power flow out" mode and power is being delivered externally as well you wind up with the two power supplies driving the same power nets.  In that circumstance, the two opposing regulators which are both attempting to drive 5 V may have slightly different voltage calibrations.  That could cause them to fight each other with over 100% of their current capacitiy.  For example if one attempts to regulate 4.95 V actual and the other and the other attempts to regulate 5.05 V.  Current will then flow to the tune of 100 mV / a couple milliohms in the wires connecting the two.  This could be several amps. (a lot)  In other words, like I said:  You want the tablet to know that power is coming in not going out and to automatically hit the necessary internal switches to make this happen. Probably the tray icon should accurately indicate this but in some goofy situation it might not. There may be a chance the icon could indicate charging and still be burning up or stressing some circuit of the tablet or charger. Another possible thing I could see happening is if you play with those resistor signalled types enough you might find a resistance value that winds up placing the device in an intermittant state.  In other words it keeps flipping back and forth rapidly between OTG and charge.  It may give the illusion that it works.  You may have marginal communication with your USB devices and the battery might even charge.  But still lots of stress will be on the power circuit. It is hard for me to risk a perfectly good tablet if I am not sure exactly what I am doing. If some brave individual performs their own experimentation and verifies that it charges and OTGs and you tell the rest of us, then you'll be a hero. Maybe one of you has good knowledge about the USB standard to be more confident in such an experiment . . . like how is the ID pin 4 REALLY supposed to work for example? That is what I know so far.  If you think you can help further, thanks in advance, or if this has helped you, then your quite welcome.

To everybody who replied, thanks very much for your input. Firstly, beegmouse those two links are a great find.  Lots of good info. Dell™ Micro USB Dongle for Data and ChargingHow To Turn A $99 Tablet Into A Workstation! A few things still worry me. 1. The article is entirely about the Stream 7 not the Stream 8 (minor). 2. In the comments below the article a few people indicate that it charges, but slowly or remains at a steady power state. One of the commenters also provides a link to another similar OTG and Charge Device. Universal usb OTG Charger HUB cable for Tablet PC thinkpad 8,X98, M80ta,WT-8,Miix2,ME-400C,V8P,T100TA,W4-820,V975I,more models One commentor, Martinot states:     "I know others who got this one to work with HP Stream:" Then Martinot reposts the same thing but with a slight correction:       "I know some who got this one to work with HP Stream 7 and other Windows tablets:" So is it only Stream 7? or other Streams too? The charging "slowly" part kinda scares me.  It seems to indicate somethings not right.I don't want to fry my charging circuit and wind up having to RMA it.  Of coarse it could just be these people's perception as well.  Like watching grass grow.  I charged mine and it is normally kindof slow. It takes the whole night to charge when it is shut down and using the supplied cable and charger. Finally from the DIY perspective - Where's the magic?  I notice that the Dell device specs say that the Micro B female port on it is dedicated for charging.  So you connect your supplied cable and charger to that and the USB device to the other port.  (in the absence of a dock or USB hub)  I suspect there's an open on the data lines in the female micro B port of the DELL thinger.  That way the 0 Ohm short on data +/- that is completed by the charger doesn't make it through the DELL thinger to the tablet.  But does the dell thinger replace it with something else?  Can't be anything very low impedence or the data to the USB device would be too loaded down to signal. Maybe it puts something on pin 4 the ID pin.  Really hard to say. Also difficult to get probes on that little Micro B male.  I need to get some push pins or something super tiny to probe those tiny pins. ~~~ Thanks for your post and thread reference leo_kendall.(Parallel Thread on This Forum: OTG, charging and extrenal batery pack works HP stream 7) leo_kendall says that it charges "slowly" using this method as well. Others in that thread report slow charging, but one said no charge at all . . . maybe did it wrong? Interesting that you need to disable the Microsoft ac adapter device driver. Also thank you to eriri-el, I actually saw that entire video even before I posted the first time. Remember that the video demonstrates this with a Toshiba something or other, not a Stream 8. One thing that is clear to me is that tablets all have unique behavior with respect to OTG plus charge. Still to address the idea, I think this may almost be electrically identical to  leo_kendall's method.  However it could be slightly different at the Micro B end because one begins life as an OTG cable.  The other is something different. I researched the Y cable at Startech.   3 ft USB Y Cable for External Hard Drive - Dual USB A to Micro B The purpose of the cable is to provide the ability to connect the USB Micro B end to a single power hungry client USB device - such as external hard drive.  The other two branches go to the PC in normal use. One provides the actual USB data connection with the standard 500 mA of power. The other (red one) provides an additional 500 mA of power from a second USB port.  The point is to provide double the power to an ext HDD.  There are no data wires in the red one. In the linked video, the cable is being completely repurposed.  Not that it's an invalid idea, you just have to be careful when trying to be smarter than the designers. Basically both methods place all three ends (Tablet, Charger, and USB Device) on the same common power bus.  That is, sharing the same +5V and Ground nets. How these two methods may differ has to do with that fishy ID pin (pin 4).  leo_kendall started with an OTG cable.  Whatever the OTG cable had on pin 4 before, I think it probably retained in his mod.  Be that a resistor to gnd pin 5, a short to ground pin 5 or whatever.  Its probably embedded in the molded plastic of the Mirco B connector which was not cut open or modified right?  Who knows what is on pin 4 until you get a DMM connected to some tiny push pins and measure pin 4 on that particular OTG cable.  Whatever is on there, It makes sense that it signals to the tablet "Hey, I'm an OTG cable, do OTG stuff."  In the tablet's sense of the world, I think "OTG stuff" doesn't  include charging.  Hence why leo_kendall had to disable the ac adapter device driver.  Intuitively, to me "OTG stuff" would mean put out power to the connected device not take in power.  But they say it works so . . . What this means is connect the Tablet's battery to a +5V voltage regulator with a 500 mA current limiter heading OUTwards on the port.  Voltage regulators and current limiters are usually one way things.  And trying to put power through them the wrong way should not work at all.  If it does its because additional circuitry was implemented to allow it. But can you count out the designer to have gone that extra mile? Unless there is no signal at all on pin 4 or whatever. . .  Maybe the power nets of the tablet are smart enough to sense the power level inside and outside and judge from that to determine if it needs to supply power out or drink power in. I mentioned in my first post that "could be" So the difference is .. .   eriri-el's Startech Y cable is made for a completely different purpose. It might have the same thing on pin 4 or something different.  I can't tell from here.  Its not an OTG cable I know that.  Does an OTG have some special thing on pin 4?  I just don't know.  But the guy in the video from eriri-el didn't mention needing to disable his ac adapter device driver. ~~~ So some of you have working OTG plus charge.  I am still not 100% convinced of the safety.  I know I'm a chicken.  But that's just me. Needing to disable microsoft drivers, not unusual. Using Y cables for things they are not intended for, I dig that too. Cutting open OTG cables and twisting wires together.  Sure!  May I suggest that anyone trying this uses either some heat shrink tubing or electrical tape to completely insulate each wire once its connected. Charging more slowly than normal bothers me. Then again maybe it just charges slow because its booted up and the USB stick uses power as well. ~~~   What progress have I made?  Well not much in the way of OTG plus charge.  This cable has positively worked for a USB mouse and USB keyboard on my Stream 8: Kirin Micro USB Host Cable Male to 2x Type a Dual USB Female OTG Adapter I know I said not to do that, but it's relevant. I used a DMM (Ohmeter Setting) with alligator clips and some safety pins with a piece of kleenex to insulate them from one another. I measured between the Micro B pin 4 and 5 (ID and GND) on the above Kirin (OTG) cable and got close to zero Ohms in both polaritys. (Red probe on pin 4 while black on 5 AND red probe on 5 while black on 4) I measured 26 MOhms between the D+ and D-  (3 and 2)on the Mirco B.  (Hi Impedance) The power pins were straight through to both USB A connectors. Because its a dual port, I know it has to be a port replicator (hub) so there are some active electronics between the data lines, and those chips being powered by the +5V bus that shared three ways. So the Micro B end looks just like this electrically: ID Pin Schematic In the Kirin there are of coarse two USB A ports, and the D + and - are not straight through but have a replicator device in the middle. The most relevant thing is pin 4 I think.  I have seen it suggested to use a resistor as the ID pin short.  This is the first real OTG cable I have had my hands on to put a probe on it and it uses a wire not a resistor. . .  go fig.  Wire cheaper than cheapest resistor ?    yes indeed. I could probably do with this cable what leo_kendall showed without cutting it open by simply connecting the necessary gender changer cable from the charger to one of the Kirin's USB As.  But if that cable puts through both D +/- lines  the D+ to D- short seen at the charger might (digitally) do strange things to that port on the replicator.  A homemade USB A male - male power only cable then.  Now I just have to tell myself its safe to try. Another thing I noticed about the Kirin's Micro B male is that the pins are recessed at three different levels so as to create contact in a sequence vs all at once.  Level 1 being the first to contact, then 2 and 3 last.1. +5V2. D+ D- GND3. ID One final link USB Micro B Pinout for Hosts The last sentence on the page above is my favorite part "Additionally, most devices can receive power in host mode, even though this is not part of the standard." Well I have had enough of this for today.  I will be sure to update if I get this working.  For now be safe with your tablets all.
Thanks again for your ideas and input.

  • IChat screen sharing and video not working on MacBook but works on Mac pro

I have a MacBook and MacBook pro. Both have the lion os 10.7.2. I can use iChat on the MacBook pro for screen sharing, video chat, and text chatting, with others remote to me. However, I can only do texting with the MacBook.  I can do screen sharing via Finder between my MacBook and MacBook pro. I can do FaceTime between both systems. I can also do FaceTime between the MacBook and anyone remotely.
I also tried installing teamviewer on the MacBook, and on a remote MacBook..... And I get the same results where I cannot share the screen, from the one that has not been working.
I have checked the settings under system preference and made sure screen sharing was enabled. I have checked under iChat under video to make sure screen sharing was checked.
The macbook that is having this problem is configured for AIM for iChat
I have run out of ideas. Any suggestions on what I might try?
    Thanks

    Ok,
I will list the ports in greater detail and point out when iChat uses them.
AIM Login and 1-1 Text Chatting
iChat version 1  through 5 will Log in to the AIM server on port 5190 (TCP Protocol) by default.
Since iChat 2 we have been posting here that the AIM servers allow a Login on almost any port and have been suggesting port 443.
This is used by both Web Browsers for secure Login to some sites and by the Mail app with some mail servers.
It is also below port 1024  (most domestic routers have the ports above this figure closed)  In some campus situations using port 443 will normally allow at least Login and Text chatting.
iChat 6 uses port 443 by default.
    File Transfers (AIM)
When doing File Transfers with AIM Buddies iChat will move to using Port 5190 on the UDP Protocol.
This cannot be changed.  (This invokes the little Message about Starting Direct IM in an open Chat)
It also uses this port for Pics-in-chats, dropping Files on a Buddy's name with out a Chat or sending other files that are not pics.
In the case of Port Forwarding some devices don't like port 5190 being forwarded "twice" which is another reason for moving the login and Text chat port.
    Jabber Logins
No matter what Jabber server you use ichat will use one of two ports (5222 and 5223)
Which one it uses is dependent on whether it needs and is using an SSL Login or not.
SSL Logins use port 5223 and NON SSL one use 5222 (ticking or Unticking the SSL box on a Jabber account will automatically change the port).
Google Talk is the exception in that it allow a Login on port 443 as well.
The First Apple Doc I linked you to says iChat uses port 5220 in Jabber.
I run Little Snitch and have never seen any version of iChat use this port at any time.
    Bonjour
Any Mac to Mac Connection or Mac to any Bonjour able peripheral will be on port 5353.
This is normally opened (Preset) in the Mac Firewall for the Finder/System side of Sharing.
iChat needs and uses two other ports  (5297 UDP and 5298 on both TCP and UDP)
As they an LAN Side connections the router would normally pass them.
At iChat 3 there were issues with the Mac Firewall (it included UDP set up and the preset in the firewall only listed them and TCP so we had people add all the iChat ports  (you had to manually enter them in Tiger)
    A/V Chats
No matter which Buddy List you start from iChat will do A/V chats the same way.
The Visible Invite you or your Buddy sends is on port 5678 (UDP)
In iChat 3 and earlier iChat then moves to port 5060 to send the SIP Connection Process invite behind the scenes  (SIP = Session Initiation Protocol)
Port 5060 is one of 4 ports internationally agreed for SIP (How VoIP phones connect) (5060-5063).
Although ISPs were not supposed to block Through traffic many started blocking End users  and then Charging them to open these ports (Many ISP were telecom companies that were losing long distant Telephone calls monies).
The SIP process then in iChat 3 contacts a server run by Apple for this purpose (Snatmap.mac.com to give it it's full name).
This acts like a old fashioned telephone operator connecting the call.
SIP is a text based process.
    Your end "Calls" the operator.
    The Operator "Calls" Buddy.
    Buddy Accepts
iChat then negotiates the ports to be used.
In iChat 2 and 3 it uses 4 ports (vid in Vid out, Audio In and Audio Out) from "the group of 20" starting at the bottom (16384 to 16387 normally)
Three and 4 way chats uses more ports (which is why 20 are set aside)
In iChat 4 Apple realised the issue with the 5060 port and changed the way iChat worked
Since then it has Sent the invite on Port 5678 but then moved to port 16402 (it starts at the top of a smaller group of 20)
All Video and Audio traffic is also now on one port  (so no need for 20 ports and iChat now lists 10).
    NOTES so Far.
File Sharing during a Chat converts the Chat to Direct IM for AIM Logins
    This is Peer-to-Peer in AIM
A/V Chats are Peer-To-Peer and you can actually log out of the Buddy list and continue the chat. (The exception is using iChat 6's  AIM Video relay option)
    Screen Sharing
Screen Sharing is an Audio Chat with a VNC connection along side.
Both bits have to wok to avoid the Pop-up to send to Apple and the Log that contains.
The Audio part is on port 16402 and the VNC part is random. (So random it is different every time you do it)
The reason it is classed as an Audio Chat+ is so the AppleScript for Auto Accept can  filter out Screen Sharing connection and Not Auto Accept them.
This does have a knock on effect as far as your Router is concerned as already mentioned earlier.
You cannot Forward or Trigger the random Port so you have to use UPnP in your router to open the ports.
    NOTES
Jabber File sharing may possibly be on port 1080 as listed in the Server Article I linked you to (I have also seen it written about in other stuff I have come across)
However Little Snitch does not seem to confirm this either.
Most time it will be peer-to-peer like the AIM connections for this.
However some Jabber servers do not seem to allow this and have this Jabber65 Proxy set up which passes things Server to Server in between it leaving your end and arriving at a Buddy.
This on  Port 7777 but you do not need to open this port (unless you are running a Jabber server)
I have yet to test File Transfers using a Yahoo Buddy List in iChat 6.
    AppleCare and Geniuses.
Previously I have been contacted by Geniuses in Stores asking to test customer's iChat.
They and the Applecare people have details about Apple wants an designed the App to work.
What they don't have is the knowledge about what it takes to set it up in the "real world".
There are literally thousands of Makes and Models of routers.
Some like the Thomson-Alcatel brand state they are SIP/VoIP ready but this means the router strips out all SIP Data trying to send it to a Phone.
Early models of Alcatels can get around this with a tweak. Later models can't.
Motorola devices tend not to have UPnP.
Apple Base Stations have Port Mapping Protocol instead of UPnP and this needs setting up.
The Zyxel range definitely does not like the dual use of port 5190 and does much better using UPnP (You almost certainly have to do your AIM login on port 443 with these).
    1. I have two computers (MacPro and MacBook Pro) that are both running Lion 10.7.2 and both running iChat 6.0.1.  <<-- Fine
    2. The Netgear router model is: WNDR3700.    <<<<---  With any Brand there are exceptions and I do wonder about this one
    3. The firewall for both Macs is turned on and in the advanced area iChat is listed as being "allowed."  <<<<---- Fine
    4. In iChat, under the video options, "Screen Sharing Allowed" is checked.                                        <<<<<---- Fine
    5. In System Preferences, "Screen Sharing" is checked and this is for "All Users" at present.               <<<<<---- Not Required
    6. There are two separate AIM accounts being used for iChat purposes.                                            <<<<<----  OK
    7. In iChat preferences, each AIM account is "Enabled" under "Account Information" and the "Server Settings" show the Server as "api.oscar.aol.com" and the Port is "443" and "Use SSL" is checked.                                <<<<---- As it should be
From this and the other info in the first port it was only the router set up that seem to throw some light on a possible cause (Port Forwarding and UPnP conflict)
If just doing Port Forwarding the ports listed would have covered things (Except the Screen Sharing's random port)
    Regarding your latest post.
I have  table similar to that on my Sagem 2504Fast Modem/router combined device and it too seems to list a different port on the external side on occasions.
I would try the router with the Disable SIP ALG unticked (so it is not disabled). If the Help info on the right gives any info about what this Netgear version does it would be helpful.
Some are like the Thomson-Alcatels I was talking about in that it points the SIP data to a specific place (Possibly a Phone socket on the device)
Others seem to provide an "boost"  to enable SIP to work and don't seem to get in the way of iChat.
Try adding the Names in Table 1 from this page and see if you can Video to those.
There are 6 names in total (I am actually only seeing one on Line as I type)
