XP pro file sharing and guest password - how to enable guest password?

Hi,
I want to share files between two Windows XP pro computers. I would also like that these shares can only be accessed with a password.
Here's a description of my setup:
I have two laptops: over 1 yo Fujitsu-Siemens (FS) running on Windows XP pro (finnish) and a brand new Thinkpad T61 (TP) running on Windows XP pro (english). Both of theses computers have guest account enabled and these accounts have also been password protected. FS's guest account is called "vieras" because of the language settings and TP's guest account is of course just "guest". Guest account passwords have been enabled using "net user <user name> *".
I've disabled simple file sharing on both computers, set shared folder permission to only contain these users: TP - "Guest (TP\Guest)" and FS - "Vieras (FS\Vieras)". Both computers have F-secure on them so I've made firewall rules which enable following services both ways to a specific IP: Ping / ICMP echo request and reply ; Windows file sharing and network printers ; Windows network browsing ; ICMP / Internet Control Message Protocol. I've also enabled these services on Windows firewall.
These computers can connect to each other either via Wi-Fi access point (b-mode) or directly using an ad-hoc Wi-Fi configuration (g-mode). Obviously the latter is used for more bandwidth hungry file transfers. Also, sometimes a cross-over Ethernet cable is used as well for even faster file transfers.
Everything on my setup works just fine except just one thing. I connect to a shared resource by running the computer's IP address. When I connect from TP to FS it prompts for username and password. FS accepts both english and finnish names for  the guest account provided that the password is correct. But here's the problem... When connecting from FS to TP _no password or username prompt appears_. If I browse TP's shared folder sessions (under My Computer -> manage) I can see that FS is logged on as "vieras" i.e. FS's guest account.
Since I enabled FS's network shares over a year a go I can't remember everything I did to make it work. Every relevant configuration on TP and FS seem to be identical (e.g. "Security settings -> local policies -> security options -> Accounts: limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only -> enabled") but still TP accepts connections without password prompt.
I've tried to get TP's password prompts enabled for a while now without any success. I did a lot of searching on the subject but I could only find instructions on how to disable guest account password prompts for network shares.
Has anyone had similar experiences or does anyone know what I should try out next? Thanks...

Success!
I solved my problem by changing guest account passwords. I tried to keep things simple by using the same guest password on both computers. This however allowed FS to log on to TP without guest password for some unknown reason. My logic would tell me that having the same guest password would allow both computers to log in without password but this wasn't obviously the case. I guess Windows has its own logic that I can't figure out or this issue had something to do with different language setups. Anyhow my shares work now like I want them to work.

  • How to configure Growl notifications for File Sharing and Address Book...

    Heya,
So my team and I constantly add new contacts to Address Book and drop files via File Sharing and I would love a way to push growl notifications to people's computers when these actions occur. Or even send emails. Does anyone know how I could accomplish this? If so, can you reference a tutorial or guide of some sort? Thanks!

The export function from iCloud creates one single .vcf file with all the addresses in it. If you click on it on the desktop, it starts displaying each and every address as a separate vCard. However, "Tools/Import...Address Books...vCard file" doesn't do anything.

  • Hello, I have a Mac Book Pro mid 2012, and forgot password, how do I reset it without losing info?

Hello, I have a Mac Book Pro mid 2012, and forgot password, how do I reset it without losing info? I certainly dont want it to be reseted by apple with my info from work, thank you very much for further response.

First, make sure caps lock is not on.
You must back up all data before continuing, unless you've already done so. If you need to back up but can't log in, ask for instructions.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise*, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
    from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.
*Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead the instructions on this page:
If you forget the password and FileVault is on

  • How do I set up file sharing and keep my Firewall on?

When I turned my Firewall on, I lost the ability to share files and screens on my LAN. When I looked at the advanced settings, I saw that File Sharing, Screen Sharing and Web Sharing were already set to Allow incoming connections but other, related, services, AppleFileServer, httpd, kdc, netbiosd, and screensharingd were set to block incoming connections. I reset the latter to allow incoming connections but was still unable to access my computer from another. Once I turned off the Firewall, I was able to access file sharing and screensharing from another computer on my LAN.
I have a firewall built into my external router so I have some protection but I still feel uncomfortable with the Firewall on my computer turned off.
When my firewall is on even with setting up to allow incoming connections, there are lots of console messages like:
1/8/12 3:00:00.882 PM Firewall: Deny netbiosd data in from 192.168.1.2:51619 to port 137 proto=17
They go away as soon as I turn off the firewall.
I did not find the Apple technical article "Set firewall access for services and applications" at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mh18503.html useful at all.
Any ideas as to what is wrong?

I normally have a Firewall enabled. I recently had to do an erase and install of Lion, followed by a one-by-one re-install of all of my software. One of the first things I did was to set up all of my System Preferences the way I like them; Turning the Firewall on was one of them. Later I noticed it was off and turned it on again. I had already set up sharing and was surprised to see the problem when I turned it back on.
As to why do I think it needs to be on. It is another part of my security layer.

  • Problem using file sharing and screen sharing in Leopard

I have Mac OS 10.5 Leopard installed on 4 computers in a Home Network and have a problem with sharing files and using screen sharing. Here is my setup.
MacBook Pro with my logon ID
MacBook Pro with my fiancee's logon ID
Mac Mini with both of our logon ID's
Mac Pro with both of our logon ID's
The problem I have is I am able to access the Mac Mini computer where we have an external Hard Drive connected for data. She is also able to access it. The only problem is we have it set up to only share this external USB drive. Yet for both of us it shares the external drive along with the internal Macintosh HD. Fortunately this is not a very big deal but since I'm not sharing all those drives why is it doing this?
Also, I am able to connect from the Mac Mini for example to my MBP and vice versa for screen sharing along with file sharing. Yet if she tries to connect to the Mac Pro from her MBP and vice versa it won't. It simply times out and will never connect for screen sharing or file sharing but yet the Finder shows the Mac Pro. We have a 2nd hard drive in the Mac Pro which is the one set up for file sharing. I am also unable to connect to the Mac Pro's HD. Everything appears to be set up correctly. For my MBP on the Finder it shows the Mac Pro but once again I am unable to connect to it for screen sharing or file sharing.
Also, not sure if it's related but even for her MBP she is unable to connect to it from any other computer in our network although it's set up for file sharing and screen sharing so I'm not sure if it's related to her logon ID. Then again as mentioned above neither of us can connect to the Mac Pro.
I tried to make the above sound as simple as possible. I am relatively new to networking and of course Leopard but even on the Mac Pro all settings sound the same as on the Mac Mini where we can both connect to. The only big difference is on the Mini we are connect to a USB external drive, on the Mac Pro an internal drive. Is there something I could have overlooked or are there known issues with Leopard's sharing features?
We both have .mac but since we are using this on an internal network (some wi-fi, some wired, all through an Airport Base Station Extreme) I would think this has nothing to do with Back to my Mac.
I appreciate any help with the above.

FaceTime doesn't do any of that, so I'll assume you mean Messages.
From the Messages menu bar, select
    Video ▹ Connection Doctor
In the window that opens, select
    Show: Capabilities
There should be a checkmark on the line with the words "1-on-1 video chat." Select
    Show: Network Status
You should have two green dots.
Make sure that you and the other party meet the applicable requirements shown in these support articles:
    Share your screen
Requirements for audio chats, video chats, and screen sharing

  • File sharing and the "current version" feature

    hi,
i see that there is a "current version" feature while using the file sharing features in "creative cloud".
How can I use this feature ?
ie. change or add versions to show up in the same area above to be used for communication with customers/clients etc.
-Where can i go to offer suggestions to this part of CC ?
-I would really love to see greater features for commenting, file sharing, and basically overall colaboration.
Any kind assistance in this would be greatly appreciated,
    Respectfull,
    RC.

It looks like you already have file syncing working from the Creative Cloud application. If not you can sign up here http://blogs.adobe.com/creativecloud/file-and-typekit-font-sync-rolling-out/.
Then all you need to do is open a file in your Creative Cloud Files folder, make an edit and save the file with the same name. A new version will appear.

As part of project(for studies), our team is working on software which had features of instanst messenger, p2p file sharing and picture sharing and support for storing profiles, offline messages. Although we had some idea abt how to proceed.....but we need to know which java technology would be best suited for various aspects for efficiency....
    1. GUI
    2. Networking
    3. Security (which class is suited for authentication)
    4. File Sharing(which files support is provided)

    1. GUISwing
    2. NetworkingPlain sockets.
(Most efficient NIO, but that's probably a bit tought for you if you are new to java)
    3. Security (which class is suited for
    authentication)Write custom classes for that.
    4. File Sharing(which files support is provided)You either need to write code for that (use sockets) or look for a 3rd pary networking library.
    5. Picture sharing(and formats and size supported)Same as above. There's no difference in sharing an image and an mpr3 song.
anything missing we need to consider.............
and we r useing JDBC...For what?

  • Best Practises for File Sharing and Print Server on Windows Server 2012

Is it better to have File Sharing and Print Server installed on the same Windows 2012 Server ?
Or, they should be installed on 2 different Windows Servers ?
    Hussien Sherief

It will work just fine to combine them.
But most people would recommend keeping functionality separate... if the budget allows.  That whole "single point of failure" concept.  If that server dies, you've lost both of those functions.

    Hi!
I have a WD my book external hard drive plugged into my imac and I want to share it over my network with my apple tv. I went into system preferences > sharing, checked "file sharing" and added my external hard drive to the shared folder. So now it is listed in "shared folders" but under "users" everything is grayed out (it says "read and write" for "everyone" - but "read and write" is grayed out, and it doesn't let me add or subtract users). Now I can access all of the folders I shared from my imac except for the externalhard drive. What's going on?

Hi RRFS!,thanks for help.I forgot to tell that hard drive has 2 partitions 1:format :Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and that works properly,2:format:MS-DOS (FAT32) and when i "get info" for both :first has shering & permitions:You can read and write - with name and privilege, second has shaing & prermissions:You can read and write- without name and privilege

Thanks for your reply. I looked in the Video app but it is empty. When I connect the iPad to iTunes on the iMac and look in  Apps > File Sharing > iPhoto, the video that I added is in iPhoto on the iPad but I cannot actually find the video in iPhoto on the iPad.

  • Do I need to use open directory on Yosemite Server, I'm only looking to use file sharing and VPN

I'm setting up a new mac mini server with Yosemite and I was wondering if there are any advantages or disadvantages to not using the open directory service? The only services I'm planning on using are File Sharing and VPN.

You don't need Open Directory unless you want to manage user accounts centrally on the server.

  • File sharing and screen sharing stop working suddenly

I have been using file sharing and screen sharing without any issues between my mac mini (10.7 Lion) and MBA (10.8 ML). However, both suddenly stopped working the other day - that is, I saw the mac mini on my MBA's list of Devices, but when I clicked on a drive or on screen sharing, it just said could not connect. I rebooted the computer and they started working again...but a few hours later suddenly stopped. I toggled those options on/off in the Sharing section of Sys Prefs, and they started working fine again...but then stopped again. It seems no matter what I do, file and screen sharing just stop working after a short period of time after being enabled.
    Ideas?

Turns out the problem was that I had a daisey-chained ethernet switch. My mac mini was on an ethernet switch that was not visible to my wireless network. Make sure that your ethernet switch is somehow directly connected to whatever is serving as your DHCP server, then your wireless devices should see it.

  • How do I connect a Maverick imac and a snow leopard mac pro file sharing

I am trying to connect an imac running Maverick,  and an older mac pro 1,1 running snow leopard.  The mac pro does not have airport.  I have tried connecting using my wireless router:  mac pro ethernet conencted and wifi with imac, but I either cannot connect or it takes forever.  I need a more reliable solution.  I bought an airport card for the mac pro. I hurt my foot, and am laid up, and have to access the massive files on the mac pro and external drives with the imac.  They are about 75 feet apart.  The imac uses the wirteless router just fine, which is next to the mac pro.  Which is the better solution,  buying a long enough eitehrnet cable, and direct connect, or install the airport card and connect using airport?  One more concern, I noticed my neighbor has  a mac, and his mac keeps showing up on the network as a lockede but selectable mac.  I am concerned about my security.  Which is best, and what is the sequence to set it up?  I can see that a step by step process with proper sequence and settings is critical to get tis to work.  Thanks for any help.

How are you currently trying to connect? The easiest method for setting up across operating systems would be to connect using AFP, the standard protocol Macs use to share files over a network (though, SMB2 is now the default method in Mavericks). Are you attempting to simply transfer data from one machine to the other, or set up a local network between these machines? If it is the former, the easiest method may be to use an external HDD to copy data from one machine and then transfer it to the other.
    See below for AFP:
Mac Basics: File Sharing - Support - Apple
    And a youtube video:
Mac 10.6 OS X Tutorial - File Sharing -AFP FTP and SMBS - Video ...
One more concern, I noticed my neighbor has  a mac, and his mac keeps showing up on the network as a lockede but selectable mac.
This is normal. You would need to explicitly grant your neighbor access to your machine for him to access anything on the machine, just as you need to do the same with your own computer you are attempting to connect.

  • Issues with file sharing after changing password

Last night I changed my system password on my MacBook Pro and for some reason it caused some issues with my file sharing with my windows PC.
I was able to finally get the notebook to connect again to the XP PC shared documents by going through finder to go to network and then connected. But the PC would not see the notebook. Everything was communicating fine when I first got the system two weeks ago.
Tech support did what they could tonight and I finally just decided to set up a connection to my notebook by entering the notebooks ip address on the pc.
It's alte and sorry for the rambling, but does anyone know why the pc (as well as others in the house) no longer see the notebook?
    Jim

No, There isn't a bug with file sharing between Mac and Pc client.

  • Need help with File Sharing and iPHOTO Library sharing........

I recently upgraded my imac and my macbook pro to Mavericks.
    I have some problems now.
Previously using iPHOTO when running I was able to see the other computers iphoto library on the left side bar.  I was able then to access the other computers iphoto library.  This is no longer showing the other computers library from either computer.
When I try to access the other computers files using file sharing I get a message that permisions are missing.
It then asks if I want to fix permisions ,  I say yes....it will run for an hour and do nothing...I need to force quit.
I really dont want to use the cloud to do this sharing....why should I upload into the internet when I have the computers on same network.
Is there any place I can go to find how this is now done?  Before I didnt need to look up a thing....was just intuitive .  Now Im running into walls every way I try to share the iphoto libraries across computers.

The iPhoto sharing that was in the previous version doesn't seem to exist. There is now iCloud Photo Sharing.
