Xp/solaris dual boot bug

I have a 80gb hard disk set up with win xp pro along
with a 25gb unformated partition. Recently I installed
solaris 10 x86 to the 25gb partition from sun's
website. the installation setup automatically selected
the 25 gb space. all seemed to be working fine. the
only problem was after installation solaris boot
manager selected solaris automatically if no selection
of win xp was made within 30 seconds. since i needed
xp pro as a default i used the utility OSBS (boot.exe
and osbs135). as instructed i have entered the saved
solaris.bin from mbr to xp root and have entered
corresponding entry in win.ini file. the new boot
manager enables xp selection by default, xp pro boots
all fine but if i select solaris nothing happens
except a blinking cursor.
It seems to me that solaris partition is all fine and
healthy as I added few packages from solaris
installation cd few days back. Only problem is i m
unable to boot from it with the OSBS boot manager.
Is this a known problem?? or is there any better boot
manager?

Hi, I am not sure if this would work but it might. First of all do you know if you delete the solaris partition then wouldn't it go back to booting to Windows? Just wondering about that. Well anyways here is my proposed solution that enables booting Solaris from Windows XP boot menu. Actually wait do you have a floppy drive on your laptop or a portable one. Because this solution requires that. Reply if you have one.

New to Solaris - dual boot question

I have been using OpenSolaris on my ThinkPad T400s, dual booting with Windows 7. I want to give Solaris 10 a try. I've had it running in Virtual Box under OS X for a while, and I think I'm comfortable enough to try it out on my ThinkPad. Here is my question: will the Solaris Interactive installer let me install Solaris 10 in my existing OpenSolaris partition? And if it does, will it modify the bootloader so that I can still dual boot with Windows 7? I dont want to have to destroy partitions and re-install Windows. Once its on my hard drive, I can add myself as a user, install the Intel 5300 wireless driver, etc... Anyone have any other issues with Solaris 10 on a T400s?

Okay, well as usually happens, when I resort to help I end up solving my own problem.
In this case however, I still don't have a good grasp of what is going on.
I deleted the partition table with sgdisk --zap-all /dev/sda and then used gdisk to recreate it, specifically setting the code for /dev/sda1 to ef00.
I then reformatted the FAT partition, leaving the other one alone. After mounting /dev/sda1 to /boot and reinstalling linux and grub, I ran:
grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=$esp --bootloader-id=arch_grub --recheck
as described in the wiki, and
grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
And it worked, including automatically detecting Windows on the other drive. Not sure what went wrong the first time but I'm glad to get it working.

How do I install dual-boot Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 on one hard disk ?

I tried to install Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 on same disk using CDs, but
the second installation overwrote the first Solaris which was installed
previoudly on the half-disk size partition of same disk.
How do I install two Solarises on one hard disk ?

There are no tricks to get Solaris to dual boot on the same drive. Just allocate and pick the free slices not used by the first Solaris install when you put in the second install. Technically speaking there is nothing preventing you from running seven separately bootable Solaris instances on the same drive (one of 8 available slices is overlap -- slice 2) provided you use a swap file on a root partition instead of reserving a whole slice for swap.

Install Windows leaving a partition for Solaris. Install Solaris into the empty partition. Reboot. Use a partition manager if you need to shrink your current Windows Partition. GParted works great and is free.

First partition your harddisk with at least 2 primary partitions, one for windows and the other for solaris if you only have one harddisk. It would be a good idea to create an additional small boot partition as the first partition as well if you intend on using an independent boot loader but it really depends on what your machine is capable of. For example, if you have multiple harddisk and your BIOS supports it, then you could just install each OS onto its own harddisk and use the BIOS function to disable/boot off specific harddisk. Otherwise, if you only have one harddisk and created multiple partitions, install windows7 first followed by solaris10, obviously installing into different partitions. If you have created a boot partition, then you can install the boot loader into that dedicated partition.

Dual boot Solaris 8 and Windows XP

Hello. I currently have windows xp as my OS. I would like to install Solaris 8 as a secondary OS. I have a separate hard drive I would like to put Solaris on. My question is, will the solaris installation allow me to choose which drive to install solaris to? Also, how can I set up my system to boot windows if I do nothing, but boot solaris if I choose to? Thanks for any help, I'm new to solaris and to dual-booting.

how do i dual boot windows and solaris
Do i install windows first and then solaris or do it the other way around..?
how do i make sure that Windows and Solaris appear in my boot options..?

The Solaris boot selector enables you to choose either
Solaris or Windows with Solaris as the default.
(I prefer grub or lilo!)
To mount FAT under Solaris:
# mount -F pcfs /dev/dsk/c0d0p0:c /dos (or �:1�?)
And the vfstab file:
/dev/dsk/c0d0p0:c - /dos pcfs - yes -
To create a GRUB boot floppy, follow these steps:
$ mkfs -t ext2 /dev/fd0
$ mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/fd0
$ mkdir /mnt/fd0/boot /mnt/fd0/boot/grub
$ cp /boot/grub/stage[12] /boot/grub/grub.conf \

Solaris 10 & Windows 2K dual boot

Hello forum,
I installed Solaris 10 on a machine such that it dual boots with Win2K . All seemed well , I logged into Solaris and Win 2K and it worked properly .
I tried logging into JDS 3 and after that it does not boot into WIn 2K .
I get the menu asking which OS to boot into and whe I give the ID for Win 2K , it just returns to the menu .
Any help in solving this issue is highly appreciated .

Thanks for the reply , but do you have any idea as to what might have screwed it the partition.
Also I don't think there is an issue with the partition , I strongly suspect the boot files would have changed though I really doubt it .

Dual boot of Solaris 10

And my second question is that Solaris 10 is the Desktop OS or Server OS ? And what is the difference between SunOS 5.2 and Solaris 10.

first, created a partition for the Solaris install
and then loaded Solaris. The Solaris boot loader

Solaris 10 dual boot hangs on

I have a hp pavillion 6000 which I am trying to dual boot with solaris 10 x86. I partitioned my hard drive using systemresourcecd and formated with linux swap. when I try to boot off of my solaris 10 dvd, it hangs. It comes up wiht the copyright information, and doesnt change. help!

It is very easy to install Solaris with Windows XP dual boot if you have correct concepts of Operating System.Whch verison of Solaris are u trying to install. if you are installing Solaris 10 1/06 then there is a grub boot loader which comes with Soalris 10 .also u will first get the selection screen during first boot. if u r directly booting into windows then go to command prompt of windows adn type fdisk. then make the partition of solaris as active and then boot , now u will be able to boot with soalris/windows.

Dual Boot Solaris 2.5.1 and 2.8

Is it possible to dual boot a Sparc Ultra 10 workstation with Solaris 2.5.1 and a more recent version (such as 2.8). If so please point me to some documentation.
This is required as we are running several pieces of software licensed against the hostid, that will soon require different versions of Solaris.

You should make an alias for your second OS location, for example disksol28.The easiest way to do this is run the format command. Write down the physical path for each disk you see. Your boot disk is probably c0t0d0 and the second disk, if you have one would be c0t1d0. If you are going to install 2.8 on another slice/partition of the first disk, write down that pathname, you'll need it for the nvalias command. If you are going to install it on the second disk then the alias "disk1" will probably work already, if you did not change the eeprom during install. You'll just have to:
ok
boot disk1
If you install 2.8 on another slice of your single disk then do not forget to include the slice in your alias.
If I asume your 2.5.1 is a flat file system (/ only, no /usr, /var, /opt, /export etc.) on slice 0 and swap is on Slice 1, then I can put another flat file system on Slice 3 - don't touch Slice 2. This OS can use the same swap Slice 1. To create an alias to boot from Slice 3:

reset <- (locks it in to NVRAM)
example:
nvalias disksol28 /pci@1f,400/pci@1/disk@0,0:d

Note:Slice 0 is asumed in most aliases. For example if your alias ends wih disk@0,0 Slice 0 is assumed. You can also say disk@0,0:a to indicate Slice 0 but ":a" is not really needed.
If you are booting off of any other slice then it must be indicated in your alias.

If you want to create an alias for your second disk (c0t1d0) with root on slice 0:

Please write down any custom aliases because a Stop+n or set-defaults will wipe them out.
If you make a mistake with nvalias then:

Dual booting Solaris 10 with Vista

I got Compaq 3702 with Win Vista - It was a pain for 2 months to installl Solaris - Every time I would Install Solaris - Grub will show Windows but on booting gives messages winload.exe missing or corrupt. Then I found out QTParted - system utility ( or gparted ) partitioned 160 GB HDD into 5 partitions.
-Made Solaris as in-active partition
-Activated Vista as active partition ( Vista has bug of not letting others OS to be installed unless it is active boot partition. )
-Using Vista DVD run Vista repair install ( Only MBR )
-Boot to vista Desktop ( Your Grub and Solaris seems lost )
-Download easyBCD 1.7.1
-Install - go to add boot option
-Make an entry for Sun Solaris in boot menu
-Reboot vista - It will boot using Vista boot menu and will give option to Either Solaris or Vista.

run into a bit of a prob with dual booting winxp and solaris. I have WinXP on 1st hard drive and Solaris on 2nd hard drive 2 (Solaris - partition 1 with slice 0 x86 active, DOS - partition 2 for installing linux later, DOS - partition 3 for fat32 file storage later).
I want to boot to Solaris on drive 2 from the WinXP boot loader on drive 1. Could somebody please tell me exactly how to do this as I've copied the bootsect.sun file from Solaris via floppy to the WinXP C:\ drive, and edited the WinXP boot loader to:

I am having a same issue....
1.....1st 80 GB hard disk, I had window XP installed. (NTFS format)
2....add 200 GB, 2nd hard drive, make 3 partitions, on first 50GB partition I have install Solaris 10.....Having some issue with network config, but its resolve, thank this forum.....
Now, everytime when ever I need to go to Solarid, I have to go in BIOS screen and switch HD, I mean if I want to boot to solaris, I have to make a 2nd (200GB) hd primary..Soaris work fine, but from the GRUB menu, if I select window, its get hung up...
now if I want to boot to window, again I have to go to BIOS and need to switch around hdd.... make 1st (80GB) hdd primary, windows work fine....
Questions are, I do not want to go bacK & forth in BIOS.....
1....Can some one help me, provide me the step-by-step information that how can i set up dual boot, so I can use my 2nd drive (200GB) as a primary and from the GRUB, I select windows and its boot to windows... if its otherway around,,,its still ok....I don't want my kids mess up BIOS....

Ultra 40-M2: How to dual boot Solaris 10 and Windows XP?

I have an Ultra 40-M2 with 3 300-GB SAS drives.
First two drives I will use for Solaris 10 and mirror them using Solaris Volume Manager.
The 3rd hard drive contains Windows XP. I want to be given the option of booting into Windows. By default, I want to boot into Solaris 10.
How do I enable all this? Is there a configuration file I need to edit in Solaris to create this dual boot?

You don't need to configure GRUB. If the third drive is XP only, you can setup the boot order in your BIOS and when you boot the system you can hit the F8 key and select to boot from your XP drive.
It works very well for me.

Dual boot Solaris 10 / Windows 2003

I have a computer with Windows 2003 installed and free disk space for more partitions.
My question is that if Solaris after being installed will recognise Windows and create entry for it in the boot system.

It will create default menu entry to boot call "grub". Best practis is install with unpatition space but be sure you are not applying dynamic disk on the disk otherwise it can't support dual boot.
