  • Firefox won't start (not even in Safe Mode) on Windows 7 x64

    I am Running Windows 7 x64 and Firefox 3.6.15.
Since the day before yesterday I am unable to start Firefox. Even in Safe Mode it just won't start.
I click the Firefox icon, the mouse cursor changes to indicate the computer is doing something. After 3 seconds or so the mouse cursor again changes back to its default state. Nothing else happens.
The Task Manager in Windows shows me that an instance of firefox.exe is running, but I see no Firefox window.
Then if I again click to open Firefox, another firefox.exe instance starts, but again I see no Firefox window.
There isn't even a warning about one instance of Firefox already running.
    What I have tried:
I have uninstalled Firefox, removed all the Firefox files and folders from c:\users\username\AppData\Local and Roamning. I re-downloaded the 3.6.15 installation package and re-installed.
    No change.

    I have the same problem.
The only Firefox version working is the 64bit nightly build 6.0a1. No 32Bit version of Firefox works!. Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer all work well.
Another Problem I have in this context is, that the Firefox Installer hangs in the tidy up step - even for the nightly 64Bit version. I have to kill the setup.exe process but the Installation seems to be completed.
Before my change to Win7 64Bit I had OpenText NFS Solo 14 installed on a 32Bit Windows7 and no Problems.
Is there a solution for this problem without uninstalling OpenText NFS Solo 14?
I need the NFS Server at work.

  • After updating Firefox to 3.6.14 it will not start, not even in safe mode after rebooting. Task Manager shows no Firefox running. I tried uninstalling Firefox & then reinstalling it. Stll won't start.

I get only an error message: " XULRunner-
Error: Platform version 1.9.2.13 is not compatible with minVersion >=1.9.2.14
    maxVersion<=1.9.2.14 "
    My system: Windows XP
I've tried the tips on the Firefox help pages.

I withdraw my 'I have this problem too'. My error was different, but a restart fixed whatever it was.

  • HT1222 security update 2014-001 1.0 will not load. Not even in safe mode. Says to contact manufacturer?

I have downloaded the latest Security Update from the Apps store, TWICe and neither time has it taken when installing. I then kept clicking and found a version specific to Mountain Lion, which I downloaded. That didn;t take on installation either, not even in Safe Mode. I have a VERY small amount of GB's per month (10 GB) and am increasingly frustrated with having tod ownload stuff that doesn't seem to work. AND the #1 hovering on the App symbol in the dock drives me nuts. Especially after downloading the same update now THREE TIMES?! Can anyon e help me to understand what's going on, or indeed how to make this thing work?

    Same here.
    Using AppStore twice: "unknown error"
I thought it might be because the AppStore installation didn't have access to my system keychain for administrator privileges, so I downloading manually, opened the DMG and ran the installer. I got the prompt for my password and the installer went almost to the end, including the "optimizing" step, but still same result:
    The installation failed
The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.
    MacBook Pro 15"
    OS X 10.8.5
    2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    8 GB 1333MHz DDR3
So how does one contact the manufacturer?
Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I have noticed many more application crashes (on launch, on quit or at random times), spinning beachballs and use of the Force Quit hotkeys. Maybe Apple should pay more attention to its computer business instead of playing in the fashion biz.

I'm so sorry that I forgot the Office programs even not open in safe mode and provide useless information in my last reply.
The problem persists when we perform a Windows clean boot, right?
Were the Office programs suddenly not working? Or it just can’t be open after you install it? Did you get any error message?
If you haven’t try a repair of your Office installation, we can try it to check the result:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/project-help/repair-office-programs-HA010357402.aspx
In addition, try to use Event Viewer to see if we can get some useful error log about this problem. See:

  • Mac Pro won't boot up, not even in safe mode.

Problem: Mac Pro having severe lag issues. Added more ram, removed Kona3, etc., nothing. Tried repairing with disc warrior but unable to repair startup disc unless booted from disc warrior disc. Won't boot up from disc warrior disc so set startup disc to the disc warrior disc. Now comp won't boot up, not even from safe mode. Any suggestions?

Boot from your OS X install DVD.
You always need to have a 2nd backup you can boot from, or an emergency (only) boot drive.
Disk Warrior does not have 10.5.2+.
If you can't do anything, zap pram, see if that helps. Or pull your drives and boot from your DVD. Setup OS X on a FW drive.
And of course, always always have at least two backup sets of your system; and sets of your data - so one set at least is always off line.

  • Reset firefox button does not appear in Troubleshooting information. Not even in safe mode. Every time I shut down computer firefox loses my profile.

As stated above, firefox loses my profile every time I restart the computor. I have created new profiles and changed the location and changed it back again to no avail. I now want to just restart firefox in default mode but the default button does not appear, not even in safe mode.

Yes. Sorry, I should have mentioned that there have been several reboots involved during the troubleshooting.
I am running Firefox in an admin level account in this case - so, there shouldn't be any permission issues there.
I have tried shutting down both the desktop firewall software, and the anti-virus, and the problem still persists exactly as described. (Obviously, I disconnected the system when I did that [smile].)
All other software on the system that I have tried, interacts with the file dialog just fine ... so, I don't think it is anything central like some corruption associated with the file dialog itself.
As I said, it is most perplexing.

  • TS1389 Itunes  on W7 - I´m unable to authorise my purchases download, and the SC itunes file wouldn´t be deleted not even in safe mode.

I´m unable to authorise my purchases download from itunes store, and the SC itunes file wouldn´t be deleted (prompts not allowed) , even in safe mode. Does anyone experienced the same error? Any solution other than posted? Thanks.

Just in case we're dealing with file/disk damage here, try running a disk check over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you delete the SCInfo folder now?

  • Blue screen on start up, even in safe mode, common fixes not working

I did quite a bit of searching for the problem I'm having, and it seems some of the symptoms are common, but none of the various fixes I've come across have worked. Any help pointing to other things to try would be appreciated, as it is getting harder to search for things without finding repeats of what I've already tried. Also, I was going to post this on the OSX 10.4 board, but changes in symptoms (mentioned at the end of this post) are starting to make me think this could be a hardware issue.
The main problem is that my computer boots normally until the blue screen just before the login window should appear, then hangs.
My system: iBook G4, 800 MHz, running 10.4.11, has an extra GB of RAM installed (for a total of 1.1 GB), new hard drive that is less than a year old.
    Things I've tried:
Booting in safe mode: No change, still hangs at blue screen.
Removing airport card, and extra ram has no effect.
    I've done a PRAM reset
    I've done a PSU reset
Checked for file system and permissions errors with Disk Utility on OS CD
Booting into single user mode works fine, where I tried:
    fsck -fy, no errors reported
running /etc/rc worked fine for a while
No unexpected errors or problems seen in /Library/Logs/Console/501/console.log, or in /var/log/system.log
I've temporarily moved /Library/Preferences, /Library/Caches, and /System/Library/Caches, /User/Library/Caches, /User/Library/Preferences, /System/Extensions.kextcache and /var/db/netinfo/local.nidb to make sure none of those were corrupted (plus checked preferences with plutil), nothing fixed.
I've double checked the permissions of the root directory.
This problem did not follow an update or installation of any kind. The computer just completely locked up in the middle of using Safari (and just typing in an edit box, nothing with much of a workload) and the blue screen hang happened upon rebooting after shutting down by holding down the power button.
Single user mode appeared to work fine, although I did get single user mode to hang when trying to back up a few GB of files onto a thumbdrive after copying about 90% of the files. And then a new problem came up where afterward, now the blue screen pops up and hangs about 30 seconds after running /etc/rc returns to the prompt (and about 20 seconds after last of it finishes outputting). I've tried clearing caches again but /etc/rc still causes this.
I was going to try to run AppleJack (recommended for checking permissions and clearing caches) after copying the files to the thumbdrive, but of course didn't think to install that until after I had a problem. And now that /etc/rc causes a problem, I don't know how to attach the AppleJack .dmg file other than hdiutil, which needs the /etc/rc to have been run, and also can't remount the thumbdrive to copy any more files over.
After this recent problem, I noticed that now booting from the OS CD goes to the blue screen too and no further. Has anyone else seen such a problem? I've heard of some issues with loose GPUs in the iBook G4, but they seem to mention scrambled or no/black video (video looks fine in single user mode and in open firmware, and up to the blue screen which is clear and bright). So now I don't seem to have an option to try an Archive & Install of the OS (which I was hoping to avoid, due to effort needed to reinstall other software).

Thank you, I had forgotten about target mode. I was able to back up all of my files. I also copied some additional 50 GB of files of the disk as a stress test and the hard drive worked fine and quick (and because it was quicker than retrieving the same files from a network drive to my desktop).
I was hoping to also unpack the Applejack files on my desktop and put them back so I could run them in single user mode without running /etc/rc. However I haven't been able to get my Linux desktop to mount the iBook in Read-Write instead of Read-Only yet (I don't have access to another Mac at the moment).

  • Firefox crashes on start-up, even in safe mode

Back in March/April 2012, Firefox started crashing for me on start up, possibly after the automatic/remote installation of MS security patches. After that time, I've not been able to start Firefox without it going directly to the Mozilla Crash Reporter. I've tried everything I could think of including safe-mode, uninstall/re-install, uninstall/back-up profiles directory/wipe profiles and all registry entries/re-install. This continues to fail since version 11(?) through 13.0.1. Even Sea Monkey crashes same manner. BTW, clicking on the "Details" button in the Mozilla Crash Reporter has no effect for me. I was trying it to help fill in the Troubleshooting Information box below as I can't get to "Help > Troubleshooting Information" as Firefox doesn't start.

What was the location of the file?

  • I downloaded "MFInstall.exe" to view image. Firefox 'restarted' as per instructions - and now f/fox does not open at all - not even in safe mode.

    Hi,
I was on a genealogy site using Firefox. I was asked to download and install " MFInstall.exe " which I did. The final instructions were: Firefox will restart and you will be able to continue.
Firefox closed (two windows), and will not open. I have access on quicklaunch (Vista) which has no response to clicking.
I still have the icon in the start menu - right=clicking at first gave me the option to 'start in safe mode' (with no response). Now clicking the icon there does not show this anymore.
I tried to 'run as admin' with no reponse.
I have found the MFInstall. exe file in my download folder. I will delete it if you think that will help.
I have CC cleaner which doesn't find it when I ask (I guess 'cause it's inside F/Fox?)
If you have any ideas, I would be most grateful. Thanks.

    Solved. (or resolved)
G'day. I'm visiting on my Firefox browser - Yay. Thought I'd update this. After I wrote this last night, (with IE browser) the confirmation e-mail's link wouldn't even work.
I deleted the offending program. I used CC Cleaner to run through the computer. Still no go. I went to bed with AVG scanning everything.
I woke to find AVG had done it's work, finding 2 problems and fixed. Still no access to mozilla.
I shut down whole computer (intending to start in safe mode). Got distracted and missed the bootup prompt. Logged on anyway, so I'd have something to tell the 'help' line here.
Woo hoo! I must have done something right, because here I am, via the link in last night's email.
The offending program was via 'Ancestry . com'. I'm off to tell them now.
I'm hoping this might assist someone else. Take care - Jo

  • 1st-gen Mac Pro does not boot in any way, not even in safe mode

I have a 1st-generation Mac Pro with the graphics card upgraded to NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT; running 10.7.2. I have had no problems with the machine since I bought it in May 2007... until now. Specifically, the machine suddenly became non-responsive, froze (I do not remember this ever happening before), so I had to power it down and restart. After that, the machine does not boot in any way: does not start up with the Option key; no FireWire target mode; does not start up even in the safe mode. All I get when I power the machine up is the folllowing endless loop: (1) the display unit (30" Apple Cinema Display) waking up from sleep (white light going off) and (2) a flicker of white on the display while the optical drive sounds like checking for any inserted media... then again the display going to sleep for a few seconds and steps (1) and (2).
I could really use help here. Thank you in advance.

    Linc:
I am also sure it is a hardware fault. I have tried to run the Apple Hardware Test from the orginal system disc: I opened the optical drive tray with a paper clip, inserted the disc and powered up the machine. However the machine only spinned up the disc, turned the display to standby, spinned up and standby, etc.
What kind of hardware fault could it be?
    (1) the display unit (30" Apple CInema Display) -- I presume unlikely, since the computer should boot even with a defunct display unit or no display unit at all, for that matter;
    (2) the graphics card
    or
    (3) the logic board?

  • Computer will not boot up. Not even in safe mode.

As of yesterday my Mac book pro will not start up. It will not go past the gray screen with the apple and spinning timer indicator. When I try and start up holding shift to enter safe mode it will not start up either. I have tried turning It on and off many times. I am not sure what to do or what the problem might be. Running OS 10.7.
    Any ideas?

The following support article is somewhat outdated. Where it refers to booting from an installation disc, you should boot from your recovery partition (if running 10.7 or later) by holding down the key combination command-R at the chime. If your startup volume is encrypted with FileVault, you’ll have to unlock it in Disk Utility before you can do anything with it.

That one does not seem to give any useful info at present.
Malware is one common cause of crashes, and that may produce variable crash reports, it is probably worth doing full scans with multiple tools/software to try to rule out the possibility of malware.

Besides trying in safe mode did you also try disabling all plugins whilst in safe mode. (If it crashes before then, are you able to create a new profile and try that ? ) Also if crashing before about:crashes may be entered have you seen http://kb.mozillazine.org/Breakpad#Location_of_crash_reports
Sorry I am not able to give a useful answer at the moment.

  • Maverick not booting, not even in safe mode

Mavericks was running smooth since release.
Yesterday I started having no sound with iTunes and GarageBand.
So I restarted but booting got stuck at the first grey apple screen with the spinning wheel.
I rebooted in recovery mode and repaired disk and disk permissions. Still no luck.
Rebooting in safe mode won't work either.
    I do have rEFIt installed.
    Thanks for help.

I get "Problems sere encountered during repair of The partition map" when I ask Disk Utility to "Repair Disk" at the top level of the disk hierarchy (i.e. not on one of the partitions within the disk but on the disk itself).
